I think one of reasons I like working backstage is that it gives me an excuse to be nonverbal

AN UPDATE: we had our first and last dress rehearsal yesterday. This girls FIRST RUN THRU, and she KILLED IT. Didn’t call line once, didn’t mess up or flub anything. It felt like a normal run !!! First preview tonight!
soooooooooo one of our actors have COVID and the understudy we brought in YESTERDAY is literally getting so much thrown at her. The current show im on is SO prop/tech/line heavy and I would explode. Sending good vibes for her forever because she is a joy of a person.

RANT ABOUT BFA PROGRAMS
something they really don’t tell you is how exhausting gig life will be. ESPECIALLY if you have to work a survival job which, in this economy, is necessary. I work 7-3 and then 5:30-11 MOST DAYS.

play review #2
The Long Christmas Ride Home by Paula Vogel
4.5/5 ⭐️
synopsis: “Past and present collide on a snowy Christmas Eve for a troubled family of five. Humorous and heart-wrenching, this beautifully written play proves that magic can be found in the simplest breaths of life. Combining the elements of No theatre and Bunraku with contemporary Western sensibilities, Vogel’s Ride is a mesmerizing homage to the works of Thornton Wilder, including Our Town. A moving and memorable study of the American family careening near the edge of oblivion.” - TCG
in depth review under the cut.
WOW. Vogel is one of my favorite artists and she has created an incredibly unique and beautiful piece of work. The use of eastern and western style to convey a story so vividly human is something that I have never seen but is done so well. Embrace the weirdness, and see the beauty of what it means to be alive.

play review #1
Crooked by Catherine Trieshmann
4/5 ⭐️
Synopsis:
“Fourteen year old Laney arrives in Oxford, Mississippi with a twisted back, a mother in crisis and a burning desire to be writer. When she befriends Maribel Purdy, a fervent believer in the power of Jesus Christ to save her from the humiliations of high school, Laney embarks on a hilarious spiritual and sexual journey that challenges her mother's secular worldview and threatens to tear their fragile relationship apart.” - Concord Theatricals
In depth review under the cut.
This play was one that I finished in a single sitting (less than an hour frankly). I am so intrigued about the relationship between Christianity and homosexuality, having been born and raised Christian and am now nb queer. But the most interesting part is that Christianity is coming from outside an established family dynamic rather than the other way around (a la Carrie). Unfortunately, the playwright kind of drops the gay aspect for generational mental illness. Which still makes for an intriguing story but I would’ve loved more from that side. Overall, it is a really gorgeous play and I would love to direct it one day.

working in the theatre professionally has really changed my entire mood towards it. It’s not really something that i do for fun, or a hobby. It’s my job. And that’s kinda screwed with my perception of self. I don’t really have a hobby anymore, i just work. And now i find myself really boring. Hmmmmmm.
