After not being seen together in public since 2008, Orlando and Viggo had several interactions of different kinds from the middle of 2016 to 2017. And then they went back to not being seen together in public again since then... I find it intriguing.

The first time in eight years that they were seen together in public was in Cannes, May 2016. Viggo was there with Captain Fantastic.

Then, in September, Viggo joked about Orlando's Captain Hook.

On October 13 2016 Orlando posted "tbt to when we all got tats cos we loved so much"

On 20 October 2017 - Viggo's birthday -Orlando posted this to his FB. The song is "The first time I ever saw your face". With this look of melancholy remembrance. On that day! Coincidence? Well, I wonder.

And as a final bonus, Orlando made another declaration of love on Oct 20, 2018. (Together with a wonky link to a fake and misspelled Viggo-account...)

After that, nothing! Except for how they both participated in the digital LotR-reunions, of course. But it's not the same.

I really wondered what inspired this period of renewed public love? Was it just coincidence that they met publically three times under the space of a year - after such a long time of absence? And then followed by an equally long absence afterwards? Was it just because they'd met and were reminded of each other? Leading to Orlando rainbow farting on Viggo on social media? Was it just being around Orlando a little which made Viggo feel the need to mention him so particularly and affectionately?

Whatever the reason, it's slightly intriguing to me.

And here's hoping there will soon be another reunion of some sort.

Legolas at Theodred's Funeral

I get he's there because he's a "main character", and it's an otherwise really emotional and moving scene, but I will always get the giggles when I see Legolas in Theodred's funeral procession.

And not just in the procession, but in a pretty top spot quite close behind the king.

Gandalf and Aragorn make some sense. Gandalf is Theoden's friend and he probably knew Theodred himself. It makes sense he'd be fairly far up the rankings. With Aragorn, ok there's a little bit of "main characters must be in shot" syndrome having him in such a prime position, but he did know Theoden, he did fight with the Rohirrim under the name Thorongil. And there's an argument to be made that as rightful King of Gondor; Rohan's ally, he gets a top spot as Gondor's representative (even if his lineage isn't common knowledge at this point.)

But Legolas. Legolas has never Theoden. Legolas has never been to Rohan. He has no connection with Rohan or any member of the Rohan royal family. The first time Legolas has ever seen Theodred is at his funeral.

Yet at the prince's funeral, there he is, in the procession, right behind the king.

And like, there will be soldiers, there will be Riders and lords and people who knew Theodred and loved him, and were loved by him in turn, and they get bumped down the procession to make way for a random elf.

Is it because Gandalf and Aragorn were thought owed a top spot, and no one wanted to ask Legolas to hang back in case he felt left out? Is it Legolas's immortality causing a lack of understanding about social niceties around funerals, so he decides to put himself at the front of the funeral procession because that's where is pals are? Or did he just turn up at the funeral as Aragorn's plus one?

After I've been absent from fandom for long years, I've recently re-discovered the fun of talking to like-minded people online. The fun of reading stories. And the fun of writing them! And it seems to be similar for other people, too, who are coming back to fandom with a big hurra.

This challenge is for you. For all of you!

I've spent years organising fic challenges and contests, but actually never for my favourite two men. I'm totally prepared to remedy that fact, which is why I'll give you the Viggorli Birthday Bash!

We've all gotten a bit older *coughs*, so I felt the pressure of the now so very common week-long events is a bit much. I guess we all have to juggle real life, family, jobs and other responsibilities. Let's make this a little more low pressure!

What is the Viggorli Birthday Bash?

The Birthday Bash will be a prompt challenge running from October 20th 2024 (Viggo's birthday) till January 13th 2025 (Orlando's birthday). I'll provide 66 (yes, a whooping sixty-six) prompts from different categories to pick, choose and/or combine to your heart's delight.

The prompts will be revealed on October 20th. You will then have roughly three months to write something for one or several of the prompts.

While this idea came about as a fic challenge, everyone is invited to answer the prompts in whatever way they like, may it be meta, pic spams, fic recs ... you name it, it goes! All this challenge is supposed to do is inspire you and spread the Viggorli love!
