the tragedy of maddy ferguson is that she was always just "the girl that looked like laura" to everyone in town. that was how she fell in with donna and james. that was how she ended up pretending to be laura for their scheme. that was how she ended up dying. it was all because no one was willing to see her as her own person

the same way the town turned away from everything happening to laura, they looked at maddy as a shadow of laura. the second coming of christ, but really she's just a teen girl who wants to be herself. putting her up on that same cross and then wondering why she ended up there in the first place

just saw the new ikwydls and, while i have many thoughts about it, i'm really only gonna say this,, i wish they had made the main incident worse right off the bat. like, i understand that both the original and this one don't want to make the characters wholly unforgivable, but i feel like the first one did a better job of making the car accident stuff more directly their fault. they get involved in a straight up hit and run where they dump the body in the ocean. and obviously, it's still their fault in this new one and, objectively speaking, it is worse bc it was fully them who caused that guy's death,, but it just felt weaker to me

Just thought of Van’s video store, While You Were Streaming, sitting vacant after her death and eventually closing down, probably leaving a couple dozen queer teenagers without their safe space, a whole little archive of queer pop culture that Van curated over the course of 25 years all thrown away and forgotten and now I’m crying
