Earworm Palace
22 posts
This blog is named in honour of The Demolished Man, a science fiction novel by American writer Alfred Bester, thought to be the origin of the term ‘Earworm’. As I’m not a man I’ve kind of bastardised the name to suit. It’s become more than just a place for me to get the Earworms out of my brain! I’ll aim to share every Earworm I have along with whatever I happen to be listening to as the mood takes me.

After not posting for two whole years I couldn’t let today pass without sharing this, even if it’s only with myself 🤦🏼‍♀️ #nofollowers right?
This was in my head when I woke up this morning, no idea why. I haven’t heard it for ages.
Funny thing…… it came on the radio when I was driving home from work!

So my album a day lockdown listening really fell by the wayside. I don’t have time to concentrate on listening to anything during my normal day let alone post about it.
I spent the weekend listening to the long awaited Foo Fighters new album Medicine at Midnight. I was hoping for great things after Sonic Highways which I’m loathe to say I hated and Concrete and Gold which was just OK. I have to say I wasn’t disappointed, I think next to Wasting Light this stands out as a really great record-chock full of quality tracks as interesting and diverse as many of their finest albums. The Foos continue to innovate and evolve with new sounds and some that sound almost like an homage to some of the finest rock music makers the world has known yet you always know you’re listening to a Foo Fighters record. This one really started me actually dissecting each song one by one and thinking about what feelings it evoked in me. I think unlike the last 2 albums I’ll have this on repeat for a while to come!

OK , maybe the lockdown ’album a day’ thing went a bit tits up so I’m back with the earworms.
This has been in my head all day, somehow back when I was a teenager S Express seemed a little more credible than it appears in this video. That’s the ‘ 80s for you I suppose? More cheese than a dairylea factory.

I am, listening to my very favourite Foo Fighters album ever, One by One as I speak, Weirdly it’s also Dave Grohls very least favourite 🤷🏼‍♀️, again I reckon there’s not a single bad track on this record, give it a try!
Now nearly 20 years old, this was the first Foos album I bought, I listened to it obsessively for months, then went out and bought everything they’d recorded prior to it. It turned me on to QOTSA since I found out Grohl was doing a bit of moonlighting on the drums with them.
Enjoy

Yes I know it’s Monday but I forgot to post this yesterday.
Today’s lockdown listen was my second favourite (we’ll get to my favourite tomorrow) Foo Fighters album ’Wasting Light’ recorded the good old fashioned way, on tape, in Dave’s home recording studio. I can honestly say there isn’t a bad track on it. I have every Foos album there is, and I was one of the lucky (million?) people to get a little piece of the original tape inside the cd packaging. I actually got the CD out and played it out loud on an actual stereo system with speakers and everything 😃
I can’t believe this album’s nearly 10 years old already!

I have to confess to being a little bit obsessed with the Sugababes. When I say Sugababes I do mean the ORIGINAL three Mutya/Keisha/Siobhan (MKS)
Their voices combined make me cry tears of joy, so here’s a little bonus YouTube playlist to make up for the lack of posts this week, of some outstanding live acoustic performances that show off their beautiful harmonies.
Enjoy!

I’ve been a bit lax with posts this week, truth be told I’ve not had much time to listen to anything. At all! Rectified today with Red Hot Chili Peppers ’By the Way’
Quite a chilled vibe in for a change this album, filled with loads of great tunes.
Everyone has a favourite Chili’s track, mine’s Venice Queen, I could put it on repeat for days. I discovered when I read Keidis’ autobiography ’Scar Tissue’ that It’s a lovely tribute to Gloria Scott, a drug counsellor Anthony befriended during his battles with addiction. She later passed away from Cancer and he wrote the song about her a beautiful and fitting tribute.

Pink Floyd-Dark Side of the Moon, released in the year of my birth. This is about the right speed for me today; lie back, close your eyes and absorb. Or if you fancy a real head trip, listen to it as the soundtrack to Wizard of Oz. I bought the DVD, the dark side of the rainbow a good 15 years ago and it became a good way for me to watch the movie without crying, which to this day I still don’t know the reason for?

Incidentally, ever since listening to Prince the other day I’ve ended up with an earworm!

Didn’t find time for a listen today so I’m sharing one I listened to last weekend. Def Leppards ‘Hysteria’ was the start of my love affair with rock music. I was only 13 when it was released and pocket money was short so I borrowed this from the local library and played the copied tape until it fell to bits. Unfortunately I never got to see them play live, that would have been awesome! Enjoy.

Today’s lockdown listen is something a bit more up to date but still a classic. The Last Shadow Puppets ‘The Age of the Understatement’ I think this might have been my first Apple digital music download? An absolute corker, Alex Turner at his finest!

Not really an earworm but I got the urge to listen to this yesterday. I have this album on vinyl but nothing to play it on I’m going to aim to listen to a whole album start to finish each day we’re locked down.
Anyway, enjoy the silence.
