hear, hear.
Atmospheric rockers, theendisthbeginning, announce the release of their second EP, tropics, along with digital maxi-single, so long, shadow, both of which will be available on the band’s official site (www.theendisthebeginning.net) and all major digital retailers on September 13, 2011 via The Brown Noise and Chupee Records.  Listeners can currently stream both releases in their entirety from the band’s Facebook page: facebook.com/theendisthebeginning. The two releases will likely be the last material to feature Daniel Pedrosa on lead vocals, who parted ways with the band in April of this year.   Following on the heels of the band’s warmly received 2009 debut, master machine, both tropics and so long, shadow find the young group exploring and further defining their trademark brand of sonics, which the band has coined “lucid rock.” While the textured and ambient-leaning sound of master machine garnered the band comparisons to such well-regarded artists as Broken Social Scene, Peter Gabriel, Minus The Bear, and early U2;  tropics finds theendisthebeginning venturing into darker, and largely more epic and bombastic territory, showcasing their heavier rock influences, including Failure, Soundgarden, A Perfect Circle, and Smashing Pumpkins.  Crunchy guitars, tribal drum patterns, and angular riffs mix with spacial synths and chiming arpeggios, creating a sonic fog enveloping Pedrosa’s distinct mid-range vocals and enigmatic lyrics.   Largely recorded during a particularly tumultuous time during the band’s brief history, tropics finds the quintet upping the ante in terms of overall sonics and emotional heft.  Each of the album’s five songs are wrapped in moody atmospherics and intense dynamics throughout. The lead-off track, “tropics,” serves a fitting introduction to the album, as ethereal guitars, lumbering rhythm section, and Faith No More-styled synths simultaneously soothe and slice.  Both “massive” and “weapons” are built around jagged post-hardcore styled guitars at their outsets, but follow their own trajectories to very different conclusions. “massive” crescendos with the most obviously apocalyptic section of the album, despite the vocals declaring “this is not the end of the world;“ while “weapons” take a rather abrupt melodic turn midway through, escalating to perhaps the most memorable chorus of the entire album.  The EP’s centerpiece,“blueswallow,” is initially a slow-burner; beginning with hypermelodic guitars and mid tempo momentum, the song layers on the tension as Pedrosa seeks or serves redemption, depending on your interpretation of the lyrics.  The album’s final track, the progressive-leaning “concreep,” finds the group venturing into previously-unexplored territory with heavily layered synth pads and effected guitars accompanying the band’s challenge to “race you to infinity.“ Meanwhile, so long, shadow finds the band exploring almost-pop hooks and song structures, bridging the lush and textured material from master machine with the arena-sized sound of tropics. Recorded during the same sessions as tropics, the three song maxi-single includes two new tracks - the cinematic title track and spacious b-side, "no use," as well as an edited version of the song "concreep." The first 100 fans to order tropics from the band’s Bandcamp site (theendisthebeginning.bandcamp.com) will receive so long, shadow  as a free download. theendisthebeginning is currently in the midst of recording their first full-length album with their yet-to-be-announced new vocalist, which they plan to release and tour behind in 2012.  If the band’s initial releases are any indication of the their evolutionary course, theendisthebeginning certainly has exciting sonic prospects in store for both their listeners and themselves.
