A-smithing I shall go!
I have no idea if I'll keep this up or not, but I'm toying with the idea of using tumblr as a place to journal the foamsmithing/costume making journey that I just set out on.
After watching some fantastic tutorials on youtube, I was inspired to try my hand at making massively nerdy stuff that I want but am to cheap to just buy off ebay. Star Wars armours, Mass Effect guns, Lord of the Rings helmets - I wanna do them all!
I'll also try and keep it as informative as I can with any tips or tricks I pick up along the way. I have a feeling most of these will be lessons learned from truly annoying mistakes I make.
So as a wee taster, here's a puc from my first attempt at anything. It's a Magneto Helmet whose template I got from the excellent Kamui Cosplay website.
I'm not actually a huge x-men fan but it was free and let me try out something simple. First lesson learned is don't use a pattern meant for Worbla, to make a helmet out of Eva Foam! Because the foam is much thicker, it throws off the seams a little. But other than that, it came out not too badly for a first attempt.
One thing I did learn is that you need to use the minimum amount of glue when putting seams together. All that excess you can see made the next stages look awful! So, use small amounts and don't slather it all over the place like I did!
Once I get home I'll put up some more pics to illustrate the mess better.
I'll also be doing a step by step post on how I did this. There's tons of amazing videos out there, but sometimes having it written down can be useful too :D
