Letโs talk about Architect math!
Considering that Precursors donโt have hands like we do, how do they format their math? Our current 10-decimal system is based on our ten fingers, so I wonder what the math of the Architects looks like, considering they don't have hands like we do. (Though AL-AN does note the usefulness of the opposable thumb.)
Architects have mechanical armsโtwo of which have hands with three fingersโbut we know that they were originally a fully biological species before inventing their synthetic vessels. As stated in the databank entry AL-AN provides on the Architect storage media, their vessels resemble their pre-civilized forms. They had to have had a math system before inventing their synthetic vessels.
Soโฆ what would their math look like?
Precursors may use a base four system in which they only use 0, 1, 2, and 3 based on the digits of their claws on their organic arms. (Assuming they had similar claws on their pre-civilized bodies.)
I mean, humans have used base 4 selectively. Itโs not entirely unheard of or out of the realm of possibility. Quaternary numeral systems are found in select languages throughout history and even have some modern code applications.
Iโm leaning towards pre-civilization Precursors having a base four system, whereas current Precursors opt to use a binary system instead.
Obviously, as their species exists in its current form a binary system would be much more efficient. Existing as data means that a binary system would compute a lot smoother; especially as a network.
They could even use something else entirely different to what we commonly think of as math. We know Architect senses do not work in the same way humans do.
โฆor maybe Iโm just a nerd overthinking alien math systems

I miss Al-An!!!!!!!!!!! Missing Al-An hours!!!! I don't wanna rush my replay of subnautica but the urge to just open below zero and go visit him.... Apparently Al-An's voice actor, Matthew Marsh, has done a lot of theatre work and I'd like to think that explains some softness he brings to the role. Al-An to me is like so defined by his curiosity, his grief, his yearning... My mans is melancholic.
But!!! At one point Al-An must have been ruthless, efficient, confident. With Robin, he's definitely driven, but it's a fervency driven by longing. I think with kharaa and the research facility, he'd have been driven frantic.... But even before that, there's a version of Al-An that's self-assured, that's dedicated with an unfailing belief to the morals and cultural credences of the Architects.
And like I think there's a version of the voice acting that could have used anger, or betrayal, or self-confidence, as the guiding emotion for Al-An, but I LOOOOOVE that we hear more vulnerable emotions instead.

Hereโs a very adorable animation that AL-AN has in the early-access original story!
I do prefer the final story, but this is so cute. I think they shouldโve kept this animation in the final release. It gives him more personality.

I've always been confused by the design of architects. The same four legs, although they give it a mythical image, in reality only add an extra pair of legs. And if you look at his front legs, you can see that he was originally intended to be bipedal. The same goes for his hands, which are useless because they have no fingers and Alan doesn't use them x)
