Meneldur was the son of Tar-Elendil, the fourth King of Númenor. He was the King’s third child, for he had two sisters, named Silmariën and Isilmë. The elder of these was wedded to Elatan of Andúnië, and their son was Valandil, Lord of Andúnië, from whom came long after the lines of the Kings of Gondor and Arnor in Middle-earth.

Silmariën | Women of Arda - Queens of Númenor | Part 1 of 6
Silmariën was born the daughter of Tar-Elendil, King of Númenor, in S.A 521. Despite being the firstborn, the laws of the land prevented her from succeeding her father and in S.A 740 her brother, Tar-Meneldur, took up the sceptre. Instead, she inherited other heirlooms of her house, including the ring of Barahir and presumably the sword Narsil, the only two surviving artifacts from from the line of Elros.
The princess married Elatan of Andúnië, a coastal city on the west coast of Númenor. Her father made her son, Valandil, the first lord of Andúnië to honour her and through him she became the ancestress of Elendil and all the kings of Arnor and Gondor after him.
Eventually the laws of succession were changed and in S.A 1075 Tar-Ancalimë became the first ruling queen of Númenor.

Silmarien was the firstborn child of King Tar-Elendil. As Númenorean succession laws of the time did not allow her to inherit the crown, she married Elatan of Andúnië and establihed the royal line of the Lords of Andúnië. She inherited the Ring of Barahir, and passing it down the generations it eventually escaped its destruction the Downfall of Númenor.

[1/?] - Women of Numenor - Silmarien, Daughter of Tar-Elendil
Despite being the eldest of her siblings, Silmarien was passed over for the throne of Numenor in favor of her younger brother, Meneldur, because of the existing law of agnatic primogeniture. However despite not being crowned, she was granted the most important heirloom of Numenor - the Ring of Barahir and upon her marriage to Elatan, there was established a new line of Lords of Andúnië. Her descendants, including Elendil and Isildur, would eventually lead the Faithful to freedom from the drowned ruins of Numeor and develop the Kingdoms of Gondor and Arnor, while another descendant, Aragorn Elessar, would reunite these kingdoms and lead the movement to free Middle-Earth from Sauron.

“Adaneth, I tell thee, Aikanár the Sharp-flame loved thee. For thy sake now he will never take the hand of any bride of his own kindred, but live alone to the end, remembering the morning in the hills of Dorthonion. But too soon in the North-wind his flame will go out! Foresight is given to the Eldar in many things not far off, though seldom of joy, and I say to thee thou shalt live long in the order of your kind, and he will go forth before thee and he will not wish to return.”   - Athrabeth Finrod ah Andreth [requested by @elrondd ]

Here’s part three of The Women Who Shaped Middle Earth (here’s where you can read parts one and two.) A five-part series, I’m looking at all the women who had a significant impact on Tolkien’s world. There’ll be some overlap (for example, Elwing appears in another segment as well), so if you feel I left something out, that might be why, but send me an ask anyway, as I’ll be editing all of this before offering the complete version for download as a .pdf.
This guide, as well as one other guide (to be released later this month) is part of my contribution to Legendarium Ladies April. If you don’t already know about the event, definitely check it out! And if you have any lady-centric questions or issues you’d like to see me make a post for, now’s the time to let me know!
And if you think this is interesting, check out my already completed Atanamili: The Women of the First Age series, which covers all the (mortal) women of the First Age.

Thus it is, Ancalimë, and we cannot alter it. For men fashioned Númenor: men, those heroes of old that they sing of; of their women we hear less, save that they wept when their men were slain. Númenor was to be a rest after war. But if they were weary of rest and the plays of peace, soon they will go back to their great play, manslaying and war. Thus it is; and we are set here among them. But we need not assent. If we love Númenor also, let us enjoy it before they ruin it. We also are daughters of the great, and we have wills and courage of our own.

♛ From Silmariën’s lineage came the Kings of Gondor and Arnor living in exile in Middle-earth. She was one of the most significant of Númenor’s royal family, as she inherited both the sword Narsil and the Ring of Barahir from Tar-Elendil, her father. These heirlooms were then handed down to her descendants, the Lords of Andúnië and later the Kings of Gondor and Arnor. The royal jewel, Elendilmir, included a fillet of Mithril that had once belonged to Silmariën survived the Fall of Númenor to become part of the crown of Arnor, and eventually survived up until the time of King Elessar.

Princess Silmariën for silmariien!
I find it quite difficult to colour her with this palette somehow… Also kinda sad that her headband braids not really visible at the end (for greater good maybe) even though I worked hard on that part. But overall I quite like this, and I hope you do too!

Legendarium Ladies April: Tar-Elendil’s Daughters
—-
Of her siblings, Silmariën most resembles their father’s family (particularly their ancestor, Elros): dark-haired and light brown in skin. Her eyes are black, just a hint of silver-grey visible in their depths. She is wise and intelligent, though she does not resent being passed over for the throne. She prefers to work from behind the scenes, influencing and advising, but able to leave matters of state behind when she wishes.
Her marriage to Elatan (a kind man with dark olive skin and brown eyes) is one of love, and her relationship with her father too is one of affection rather than political convenience or alliance. He dotes on her as a child, feeding her curiosity and want for knowledge (he tells her the tales in his books, and when she is older she reads over his shoulder as he writes).
(He is conflicted: glad that she has her freedom, worried that he has not given her all she deserves.)
(To her goes the Ring of Barahir, and to her descendants goes the city of Andustar and the title of ‘Lord of Andúnië.’)
Isilmë, her younger sister, doesn’t concern herself much with politics. No more than she needs to, in any case. She has a secret love for baking, and sneaks down into the kitchens at night, with the help of the servants, to use the ovens. It’s not much of a secret though. Her father knows, asks the servants to make sure that she always has whatever ingredients and tools she needs.
Her skin is brown and her eyes are grey, and her dark hair seems reddish in the sunlight. She marries happily, and lives away from the court. Her siblings visit her in the country, sometimes, when they too need to get away from the politics and constant display of Armenelos.

{ ♕ silmariën } → Silmariën was the eldest child of the fourth king of Númenor, Tar-Elendil. In the early days of Númenor, rule passed to the oldest male offspring of the King, but under later laws, she would have succeeded her father as the Ruling Queen. Because of the succession laws of her time, the rule was instead given to her younger brother Tar-Meneldur. Nevertheless, Silmariën is one of the most significant of Númenor’s royal line. From her father, she inherited both the sword Narsil and the Ring of Barahir. These were handed down to her descendants, the Lords of Andúnië and later the Kings of Gondor and Arnor. Silmariën’s direct descendants included Elendil, Isildur and Anárion, who founded the kingdoms of Gondor and Arnor and many generations later, Aragorn II Elessar, King of the Reunited Kingdom.

Silmariën of Númenor:
Daughter of Tar-Elendil. Born in Armenelos in S.A. 521, Númenorean law at the time did not allow women to inherit, and her brother Meneldur assumed the throne. She instead became Lady of Andúnië, founding the line that would later rule in Middle-earth through the Third and Fourth ages. The Elendilmir, the Ring of Barahir, and the sword Narsil were passed down through her house. Though her actions are little mentioned, she is one of the most remembered and influential of the Númenórean royalty.

Númenor AU: Tar-Silmariën
'Should have been Queen' was not enough, Lady of Andunie was not enough, the ring and the sword were not enough. It is my right, let me rule.
