I love these three so much???? Seriously, watching their duel against Team 5Ds gets more entertaining with every rewatch. They deserved to have that whole stadium cheering for them, damn it!
#yugioh 5ds#team taiyo#hot take but these guys are the best WRGP-only antagonists in the show#1. they're genuinely likeable and not dickheads who are overconfident in their strategy#2. they are perfect foils to the 5Ds boys because they come from humble origins and are trying their best#3. instead of busting out one synchro behemoth after the other they use a genuinely unusual strategy#which 4. means Zushin's reveal feels super earned and creates some well-deserved hype#5. at four episodes for a three-on-three duel they don't overstay their welcome either#very good boys all around#and SUCH a breath of fresh air between your Team Unicorns and Team Catastrophes and Team Ragnaroks#so yeah#orchid watches 5ds (again)#I FINALLY got around to watching this duel in one go#was not disappointed#(except by the streaming server being slow which turned half the screenshots into oatmeal quality)#episode 122#screencaps

I love the Team Taiyo duel but ngl knowing that in the tcg the card states that you have to declare that you're trying to summon Zushin puts a bit if a damper on it
Like obviously card effects get changed all the time in the anime (sometimes part way into the series, even, as is the case with Junk Synchron) and changing this one creates more drama, but when they say Zushin is nigh on impossible to summon, they really do mean that, lol
#yugioh 5ds#if they had to declare their intent they never would have been able to summon zushin#so for Plot Reasons they had to change that obviously haha

WARNING: Spoilers for Yu-Gi-Oh! 5Ds
So I just watched Episode 122 of 5Ds and wow just wow. What did I just watch? I think the Team 5Ds vs Team Taiyo duel is so far my personal favorite of the entire series and perhaps it's among my favorites of the franchise so far. The mini arc (118-122) is very well written. It starts presenting you the Taiyo as a team of country bumpkins who don't seem very professional and even make you wonder how they reached the WRGP.
Then the duel starts and it's surprising how the Taiyo deck seems to consist of lame two star cards. You know, like the kind of default cards you get when you start a new character in Duel Links! But slowly you see its members building a weird barrier strategy. Then Zushin is hinted, making the so far invincible Team 5Ds get scared. Zushin appears and it manages to destroy Crow and almost destroying Yusei, before he manages to get a victory using a technicality mixed with a power of friendship mumbo jumbo.
Maybe it was me but the show really managed to make me root for the 5Ds rivals: the Taiyos. I was like "ehhh a boring duel before the Æsir guys" but damn, the series served. The Taiyos might not be very...unique or charming, in fact, they kinda look like background characters. All of this makes their sudden push even more significant. All this time we've seen the Signers and Team 5Ds defeat enemies left and right and finally they seem to suddenly struggle against...a trio of guys who use low level monsters AND a card so hard to summon that nobody really summoned it in a DM tournament until that Episode.
Gosh, that Episode was so good. And Clear Mind making a comeback at the end was pretty solid. It's not a surprise that when Yusei gets into the circuit he seems to be happy because he is truly enjoying the duel, reminding him of his early days in Satellite.
It's a damn shame this mini-arc was never dubbed because 4Kids, for the plethora of reasons we are acquainted with, decided to skip them.
Idk maybe somebody saw this mini-arc and was like meh it's ok. But it's honestly been a while since I saw a duel that really hooked me in.

The crowd snapping at 5Ds not to destroy the monster that will let Team Taiyo bring out Zushin is wholesome as shit and pretty much exactly how I’d react. Like, fuck you team 5Ds, I don’t care that you have to save the world or whatever, I wanna see this monster that’s never been summoned before!

For the yugioh asks: Give me the sweep between 8 and 12!
8. Favorite antagonist/villain
—There's a lot of good ones to pick from, but ultimately it's gonna have to be Yliaster's Four Stars of Destruction from the end of 5D's, especially Aporia and Z-One. They really bring a lot to the table in a lot of different ways, and they're a big part of the reason the final arc is as stellar as it is.
9. Favorite minor character
—Hmmm… Sevens and Go Rush kind of have an advantage here, since their side characters tend to be a lot more fleshed-out and recurring than the character-of-the-week types from previous shows. There's a lot of very good options there, but maybe… Getta and Ushiro? Mitsuko? George Jersey? And outside of the Rush Duel shows I do also like Lazar/Yeager from 5D's, just because he's very funny in the latter half of the show.
10. Favorite Duel Monster
—The Signer Dragons (and their evolutions), I think. Or maybe Yuuga's final ace monster from the final of Sevens (because gay gay homosexual gay). Oh, and Zushin too, of course.
11. Favorite spell card
—…I've already answered so many of these with 5D's things that I feel like I have to say something other than Afterglow, but I'm really having a hard time thinking of a spell that I'm equally insane (positive) about.
12. Favorite trap card
—…Yeah I think this one's gonna have to be Converging Wishes. The part where it's used in the show is so cool and wonderful, and just a beautiful crystallization of some of the big themes of 5D's. I'll give Linear Equation Cannon an honourable mention though, just for being a weird silly build-around.
#man these were some tough questions. i guess 'what's your favourite X' type things tend to be when there's so many options#also can you tell what my favourite yugioh show is grfjgjuchch#also maybe don't look too deep into some of these cards/characters if you don't want spoilers. especially for 5ds#yugioh#thanks for the ask!

i don't wanna watch a new ep rn so i'm dump some drafts i made
ok so, first duel where the Seal wasn't in the starting hand, finally
uh, i like Rafael called the Kuriboh Siblings "(YY's) charming little servants" and was pretty respectful of YY's monsters, like you would expect him to treat Yugi's cards like shit to make him Extra Evil but instead the writers bothered to give him 1 consistent character trait at least, good
still, i don't like the whole "tributing monsters is evil" plot at all because, again, tributing monsters is literally just a game mechanic, YY tributed countless monsters in this anime but suddently he is evil for it???
on the other side i like how Rafael's obsessions with empty graveyards ties to his ace/favorite monster requiring no monsters in the GY to be special summoned, it's a reference to Rafael being unable to let his monsters/family "die" for good, but also his own proper game plan, it tells us something about the character while also making sense in context (unlike Seto vs Yugi in Duelist Kingdom, because clearly making a vanilla fusion with 4500 ATK is more imporant than saving your brother as soon as possible)
i would like it more if it wasn't treated as reason to punish YY for letting his own monsters in stay in the GY like... everyone beside Madolche players (don't blame the duelist, blame the duel monsters???)
last thing but the show made really obvious Dartz killed Rafael's family, like even if i didn't really knew it, you put a scene where Darts kills some guys by causing a storm and making their boat sink AND then reveal Rafael's family died in the same way? holy shit what a neat coincidence!
with that said we should talk more about Rafael having 2 hatchets at the start of the duel, like. he could just fucking killed Yugi holy shit???
#i would talk more on eatos too but considering that card is a blatant racist caricature i don't really have anything to say#beside 'wow that's a fucked up design'#sadly it's not the only as zushin also exists (and appeared on 5ds too...)#al watches ygo dm#my post

what yugioh decks you could see the dr characters having?
This ask frustrates me immensely because I had to stop to think about things I would have known from the top of my head if were asked this 3-4 years ago. Thankfully, I still remembered most of my 2017 headcanons, to my own surprise. If any of the answers don’t sound too up-to-date, that’s why.
Naegi claims to always like the most popular thing because he’s that normal, so he would use an all-time fan-favorite deck, like Lightsworn or Blackwing.
Maizono would play Shinobirds because it combines both her Tsuru no Ongaeshi and her Tanabata motifs. It’s perfect, honestly. The only way this deck could be more “made for her” is if they were idols.
Kuwata plays whatever is on the meta. The punk rock identity he presents in-game is an aesthetic he developed because his cute hairdresser said she was into musicians, indicating his sense of self is not deeply rooted enough to stick to a fixed deck or theme.
Fujisaki would use a Cyberse deck. A Yusaku deck sounds like a good basic option, but really, I think any Cyberse deck fits.
Oowada, leader of the Crazy Diamonds, would use Gem Knights. His more old-fashioned brother Daiya could use Diamond Dude Turbo.
Ishimaru defines his entire life on his belief that effort should be reward more so than competence, so he would use Zushin, a deck that requires a very unreasonable amount of effort, and unlike Perfectly Ultimate Great Moth, rewards somewhat accordingly.
Since we somehow still don’t have a mahou shoujo deck, Yamada would play Super Quantum. Sky Striker is another reasonably otaku option, but Super Quantum has the giant mechas matching the Justice Robo he created.
Celes plays Vampires. That’s the aesthetics she canonically would kill to live by.
Sakura plays Gouki because that and Dinowrestler somehow are the only dedicated martial arts decks to this day, and Gouki being onis match her stage name being Ogre.
Mukuro would play Igknights because her obsession with guns is intense enough to let her ignore her obsession with her sister.
Junko is already covered in the Shirogane section of the 2017 V3 post.
There are no detective decks (the closest we got is S-Force, which is portrayed as enemies to the Time Thiefs) and Kirigiri sorta refuses to have any identity outside of being a detective, so I guess she would uphold the Kirigiri family’s creed of fairness and neutrality by always facing her opponent with the same type of deck they’re using.
Togami and his impostor play whatever is on the meta because Togami cares about winning more than he cares about self-expression.
I didn’t want to give Asahina a water deck because swimming is just the sport she’s the best at, and what she actually likes is sports and athletes in general. A U.A. deck would fit her, but it would fit Nidai a lot better, so I’m out of sport options. She gets Mermail.
Hagakure is the guy who ignored his debt with the yakuza to buy Ooparts. He would unquestionably play Chronomalies and I don’t like this because I played a lot of Chronomalies back in my YGO days.
Fukawa is the writer who made Japan develop a fisherman fetish, so she’d play a Umi deck. Geno plays Frightfurs for obvious reasons.
Hinata plays whatever is on the meta because this is the guy who was so desperate to win that he practically paid to get himself replaced by someone more capable.
Hanamura plays Suships because it’s the fanciest food deck available.
Koizumi plays Rank 6 because, in the absence of the C/C/C archetype, Force Focus is the closest we have to a camera card.
Peko plays Shiranui because it’s a deck of samurai with no being moved by the spirit of a sword instead of any will of their own, and coincidentally is also the name of the school she and Sakura attended.
Hiyoko plays Madolche because cute pastry.
Mioda could play Romin’s deck in a Rush Duel setting, but in a normal Yugioh setting, I got nothing too good. Evil Twin fits her aesthetic, I guess.
Tsumiki would play Bad Reaction to Simochi. The deck's main monster is an evil nurse and the entire concept of the deck is using healing effects to hurt.
Nidai gets U.A. Self-explanatory.
Tanaka gets Tanukis because it’s a relatively powerful deck that uses only small beasts. The name thing is merely coincidence.
Komaeda uses Arcana Force and regularly wins with it, in a way no one else can.
Human Nanami would play B.E.S. because haha video game reference, I guess. NWP Nanami should play a Cyberse deck like Fujisaki. She’s the SHSL because she plays to win, so she should go with @ignester or Salamangreat (I have no idea what the strongest Cyberse deck is).
Souda would play either Sky Striker because a blondie in a mechsuit is the sexiest thing he can imagine, or any of the many heavy machinery archetypes, like Trains or Infinitracks.
Sonia would play Invoked due to her interest in the occult. I wish there were some onmyouji deck to combine her loves for the occult and for Japan, but in the absence of that, that’s what I’m going with. Mayakashi doesn’t feel occult enough.
Both Kuzuryuu and Owari play dragon spam. The former because his live is bound by the legacy of the Kuzuryuu family and their name means “nine-headed dragon”, and the latter because that’s a deck where you don’t need to think hard, just spam beatsticks and do big damage.
As for updates on the old V3 post:
Akamatsu gets a better option in Doremichord. It requiring the set of being a Pendulum deck fits Akamatsu’s taste for Rube-Goldberg machines.
Sky Striker is a decent option for Shirogane because it’s clothes giving a girl power, but I’ll stick to my Nekroz idea because it’s Yugioh cards cosplaying Yugioh card.
Toujou plays Dragon Maids. Very self-explanatory.

Gundham, Himiko, and Sonia, you now face the unstoppable and invincible Zushin the Sleeping Giant. He's literally unaffected by all magic and effects whatsoever and his power level will be equal to your powel level except much higher. (Yes this is Yugioh. Show some respect to this impossibly hard to summon monster.)
Himiko is not with us right now...Sonia? What do you have in your deck?
My strongest card is Obelisk the Tormentor! I also have Magical Hats! What about you?
I have both Slipher the Sky Dragon and Dark Magician. For support I have Multiply and Monster Reborn...
Let us give it a go.

Say what you will about Team 5Ds vs Team Unicorn, but I actually don't hate the ending or think it's a copout.
Maybe I'm just enough a bit of a traditionalist when it comes to dueling, but I've never been a fan of "cheap wins", and that includes your opponent decking out resulting in your win. Like, you won on a technicality, good job (and yes, that's sarcastic).
I've never been a fan of cheap wins or cheap tricks. Look, the duel vs Team Taiyo might be my fave of the WRGP, but the fact that they got through the prelims without summoning Zushin and by basically solely using the effect of Speed World 2 drives me nuts. I still love the duel, because that's kinda the point, that their strategy would only ever work for them, but I hate that effect in general; this is just the best example of it. Using SW2 to deal damage is a bit of a copout in itself, imo, not just to win a duel where you couldn't quite deal that last 800 points or less of damage traditionally, but in dealing damage in general. (Yeah, I get it, it's card effect damage, but it's effect damage you automatically get to use since SW2 is required for riding duels. It's not the same as having to draw and set/use a card from your deck.)
So I actually get the logic of Jean choosing to attack instead of ending his turn and letting Yusei deck out. Winning on a technicality is just not as satisfying.
#yugioh 5ds#ygo 5ds#yugioh#ygo#hot take? maybe#saw a comment on yt that set this off actually lol#like there ARE valid crits of this duel absolutely#but the ending is not something that bothers be at all#it also doesn't bother me that yusei took them all on#not in the sense that its impossible anyway#sherry boasted about making it through the prelims entirely on her own#so it's not like it's not possible to do#the valid crit here is that it's really the only time aki gets to have a riding duel#and it's VERY short lived#like yeah that DOES bother me#they made this big to-do about her getting her license#it got an entire episode#and then she gets to have a grand total of one actual duel after that#anyway#random ramblings#don't mind me#and yes you can say its just bad writing in general#i don't really care#i'm adult and i will simply ignore you

I only started following recently, so I didn't see your reaction to it. I know you weren't a fan of the WRGP, but what did you think of the duel with Team Taiyo? I friggin loved it, because I lived in Yamanashi prefecture of a good while and one of them spoke with the Yamanashi dialect, and that really help sell me on the premise of these lovable country folk who wanna duel and prove themselves in the big city, with everyone watching back home. I fuckin cried when they summoned Zushin and the crowd flipped and started cheering for them. It's honestly one of my favorite duels in the entire yugioh franchise.
I'm probably gonna get my 5Ds fan card revoked for this but I didn't watch it.
Okay so long story short my first exposure to 5Ds was the first 64 episodes in sub and I found a lot of it really boring for the most part. I could tell when a plot was good but I wasn't getting invested despite wanting to like it so badly. Later on I ended up watching a few episodes of Dark Signers in dub out of curiosity and absolutely fell in love. I was finally invested in the story/more of the characters and realised "holy crap this is actually great." And rewatched the Dark Signers arc in dub. Then when I got to Pre-WRGP, I decided to just continue watching it in dub because I liked the dub, a huge shock to the system as I previously hated the YGO dubs (now I'm mostly okay with them besides GX's).
However, the 5Ds dub had one big problem: it wasn't complete. There's a slew of episodes in the middle of WRGP that were never dubbed and I was so fed up with the plot of WRGP's story and the sub of 5Ds that I initially skipped those episodes so I could just finish the dub and say I had technically finished 5Ds. The only things I saw in that stretch of episodes were the episode where Sherry falls in a wormhole (cuz I had a sneaking suspicion that was important) and Lazar/Yaeger's backstory. Team Taiyo, from the episode description I saw, looked like filler so I completely glossed over it and had no idea it was a fan favourite.
To be honest, I was not actually planning to watch those undubbed episodes. How that happened was this: I recently finished Sevens and wasn't ready for Go Rush yet so I decided to watch that wormhole episode I mentioned and found it surprisingly interesting. Then I skipped to the first episode of Ark Cradle (Yusei defeating Aporia) and had a moment of "oh shit, this is actually pretty cool" and got genuinely into watching it. It still had the problems that Japanese 5Ds had (Yusei is so boring and the other characters don't fare too much better as they're all far too stoic most of the time) but the story was good enough to carry it through to the end for me, which is quite frankly a miracle considering just how badly WRGP pissed me off. You weren't there for it so just take my word: it destroyed every bit of good will I'd grown for 5Ds in one fell swoop.
Back to the episode you mentioned, it does sound quite sweet so maybe I'll give it a watch? Everything else in that stretch though? Nope, can't bring myself to do it.
