Wie will man etwas erzählen was andere nicht so gerne hören möchten.

In a recent tweet, Chinese journalist Colin Wu provided an update regarding a significant crypto hack that took place in August. The hack was alarming because it targeted a platform BitBrowser, frequently used by cryptocurrency enthusiasts who participate in airdrops. Hackers Move Funds To Crypto Mixers According to Colin Wu’s report, the perpetrators of the BitBrowser breach transferred 236.27 Ethereum tokens to a crypto mixer named eXch. This transfer was approximately $386,000, constituting about 70.6% of the stolen funds. The primary purpose behind transferring the funds to a crypto mixer is to conceal the origins of the funds. This approach enables the hackers to eventually liquidate them on centralized cryptocurrency exchanges. Wu referred to a prominent blockchain security firm SlowMist, that has been closely monitoring the situation. Last Friday, the SlowMist team revealed that the hacker had transferred $110,000 from the stolen funds to new addresses across various blockchain networks. These networks comprised of Ethereum, zkSync Era, Arbitrum, and Optimism. On August 29, the blockchain security team detected that the hacker had transferred more than $10,000 to cryptocurrency exchanges, specifically Binance, ChangeNow, and FixedFloat. Ethereum’s price currently hovers at $16,32 in the daily chart. | Source: ETHUSD price chart from TradingView.com It is essential to highlight that BitBrowser had previously released an official statement confirming the security breach. In their announcement, the platform revealed that the information stored on BitBrowser’s servers had been exposed. Abeerah Hashim, a well-known cybersecurity expert and associate editor of ExtremeVPN, commented on the matter, saying: Today’s cyber landscape is a battleground where vigilance is key. The BitBrowser hacker’s use of a crypto mixer to move stolen ETH serves as a stark reminder that the fight against cybercriminals requires constant innovation and collaboration among security experts and the crypto community. ExtremeVPN remains committed to bolstering digital defenses and safeguarding the future of online transactions. Certik Reports Show Over $1 Billion Has Been Lost To Hacks This particular event is not an isolated case. A well-known blockchain security company, Certik, had previously reported that the cryptocurrency sector had suffered losses of roughly $1 billion in 2023 due to hacks and security breaches. Certik stated that the industry witnessed losses of $45.8 million attributed to various criminal activities in August alone. The analysis reveals that exit scams accounted for approximately $26 million of the total losses. Flash loans, a relatively recent form of uncollateralized lending within the DeFi ecosystem, were responsible for roughly $6.4 million in losses. The remaining $13.5 million was attributed to exploits, encompassing vulnerabilities in smart contracts and other blockchain technologies. CertiK also highlighted a number of other significant incidents that incurred substantial financial losses. The Zunami Protocol attack caused losses amounting to $2.2 million. Also, the Exactly Protocol exploit led to losses of $7.3 million, and the PEPE withdrawal incident resulted in losses totaling $13.2 million. CertiK’s data also reveals that the total losses stemming from hacks, scams, and exploits in 2023 have crossed $997 million. This figure includes approximately $261 million lost to flash loan attacks, over $137 million lost to exit scams, and more than $596 million lost to exploits. Although the losses in August remain significant, they are considerably less than those witnessed in the previous month. In July 2023, cryptocurrency investors saw losses totaling around $303 million in digital assets due to exploits and hacker attacks. Source

Binance NotConnect, Coinbase Significant, PayPal Integrate and 20 Crypto Jokes
Binance NotConnect, Coinbase Significant, PayPal Integrate and 20 Crypto Jokes
This week in crypto: Kaiko found that BTC and ETH were slightly less volatile than oil as both assets continued to trade sideways, Coinbase secured approval to launch bitcoin and ether futures trading for the US customers, and Valkyrie Funds filed for an Ethereum Strategy ETF that would invest in ETH futures. Binance Connect was shut down “due to its provider closing the supporting card payments service,” and Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong acknowledged that the surge in on-chain activities on Base revealed significant flaws in the user experience of the Coinbase app, promising to improve it, while Voyager Digital transferred $5.5 million in coins to Coinbase, igniting suspicion.
Then, Ledger announced a PayPal integration that allowed its users to buy BTC, ETH, LTC, and BCH, while PayPal said it would pause crypto buying in the UK until 2024 to comply with the new crypto marketing rules, and it launched Cryptocurrencies Hub to allow users to hold various cryptos and use them in transactions. Meanwhile, McDonald’s Singapore launched Grimace-themed soulbound NFTs, Zynga said that its first Ethereum-based NFT game Sugartown was “coming soon”, and Reddit NFTs minted on Polygon surpassed 20 million. The Met partnered with Roblox to offer a virtual experience to its younger audience, while blockchain startup Nova Labs announced a new phone plan that offers unlimited text, talk, and data at just $5 per month.
As this was happening, Microsoft and LeverFi joined forces to launch an AI-backed solution to tackle the challenges in DeFi, critics raised concern as Gitcoin announced a green-focused partnership with oil and gas giant Shell, Securitize was set to acquire the crypto investment platform Onramp Invest, BitGo raised $100 million and reached a valuation of $1.75 billion, and ZTX closed a successful $13 million seed round led by leading crypto investment firm Jump Crypto. The UK’s financial regulator approved only 13% of the total applications for registration filed by crypto companies, China’s Sichuan province targeted the metaverse industry expansion to reach $34.4 billion by 2025, and Kazakhstan was edging closer to the ‘launch’ of a CBDC.
In legal news, the prosecutors in the Sam Bankman-Fried case wanted to use Caroline Ellison’s to-do lists and notes as evidence, and former FTX exec Ryan Salame declined to testify about his involvement in an alleged illegal campaign donation scheme. Binance US sought a protective order against the renewed SEC probe, the judge approved an investment banker as a declarant in the SEC vs. Ripple legal battle, and Sotheby’s responded to the allegations made by Bored Ape investors describing them as opportunistic and baseless. Dubai’s Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority slapped 3AC co-founders with a $2.7 million fine over their OPNX project, and a judge in Singapore decided that the legal dispute between 3AC liquidators and DeFiance Capital would be heard there against the will of the liquidators. Meanwhile, crypto exchange Dasset began voluntary liquidation as it froze customer funds.
In the meantime, the Philippine police’s anti-cybercrime group released a warning to citizens on possible risks involved in cryptocurrency gaming, the US FBI seized digital assets worth $1.7 million from March to May, South Korean police stepped up their crackdown on crypto-powered drug trafficking and made 312 arrests in a wide-sweeping narcotics bust, and a Chinese local court started the trial in the case of a major Filecoin mining firm for an alleged $83.2 million pyramid scheme. Zunami Protocol confirmed a price manipulation attack on its “zStables” stablecoin pools on Curve Finance, while Base- and Linea-based SwirlLend reportedly pulled off an exit scam worth $460,000 in user deposits.
Let’s laugh at some carefully selected jokes now.

Murphy is such a great character. The writers go out of their way to make sure he is completely unsympathetic. This is the episode where we see Murphy become part of the group rather than the goal of the group - whether because he has a thing for Warren or because he knows he needs them to get to the CDC to get help is left ambiguous - and it could have been the beginning of a sort of redemption arc, a “he’s not so bad after all” story line. Except that he gets the food and water for the others by stealing it from a woman and her young daughter. Then, completely unnecessarily, he lets a zombie in to eat them. This is not a guy you can like or respect. He’s a great character.

Malicious actors targeting the crypto space have taken more than $45 million in digital assets from their victims in the month of August alone and a total of $997 million year-to-date (YTD), according to a report shared by the blockchain security firm CertiK.In the report, CertiK highlighted that exit scams took around $26 million, flash loan attacks took $6.4 million and exploits took $13.5 million from their victims in August 2023. The cybersecurity firm confirmed that the total losses amounted to over $45 million.Major incidents that happened in August. Source: CertiKCertiK pointed out that some of the major incidents that contributed to the amount lost include the Zunami Protocol attack, which led to $2.2 million in losses; the Exactly Protocol exploit, which took $7.3 million; and the PEPE (PEPE) withdrawal incident, which led to $13.2 million in losses.According to CertiK, more than $997 million has been lost to exploits, hacks and scams in 2023 so far. This includes around $261 million lost to flash loan attacks, over $137 million lost to exit scams and more than $596 million lost to exploits. While the losses in August are still high, the amount is significantly lower compared to the losses incurred in the previous month. In July 2023, around $486 million in total losses were recorded by Web3 data outlet De.Fi, with the Multichain exploit alone contributing around $231 million to the total amount lost. With various factors at play, Multichain officially announced the halting of its operations on July 14. The team cited a lack of funding for operations and a lack of alternative sources of information as the reasons for its shutdown. According to the team, it was unable to contact the CEO since he was taken into custody by Chinese authorities. Source

DeFi Protocol Zunami Loses Over $2.1 Million in a Major Price Manipulation Attack
DeFi Protocol Zunami Loses Over $2.1 Million in a Major Price Manipulation Attack
Source: Pixabay
Decentralized Finance (DeFi) platform Zunami Protocol has confirmed a price manipulation attack on its “zStables” stablecoin pools on Curve Finance, causing potential losses of over $2.1 million.
The attack is the latest among the list of protocols affected by the recent vulnerability in the popular DeFi platform Curve Finance, which drained funds from a number of the protocol’s liquidity pools, exposing $100+ million worth of cryptocurrencies.
The hacker in the Zunami Protocol’s exploit apparently took flash loan from balancer, blockchain security firm Ironblocks noted. The attacker, then added liquidity to change the price massively and started trading in Zunami’s exchange.
Ironblocks wrote in a Tweet that the liquidity was later removed, which changed the price and finally traded back and returned the flash loan to get 1,1152 ETH.
Fellow blockchain security platform PeckShield was quick to report the attack on Twitter, which immediately notified Zunami Protocol to take “necessary actions.”
The attack netted the bad actor more than $2.1 million, carried out via price manipulation, “which can be exploited by donation to incorrectly calculate the price,” PeckShield wrote in a Tweet.
PeckShield also noted that the stolen funds were sent to coin mixer Tornado Cash, which obscures the transaction path. This further complicates the efforts to track and recover the stolen funds.
Curve Finance platform is still struggling to recover millions of dollars lost in an exploit and recently announced a bounty of $1.85 million to anyone who can identify the attacker.
Zunami Warns Users to Refrain From Buying Stablecoins
Following PeckShield’s warning, Zunami confirmed the attack and said that the “collateral remain secure.” The protocol instructed its users to refrain from buying either of the affected tokens – Zunami Ether (zETH) or Zunami USD (UZD) stablecoins – warning that the exploit is still being fixed.
Soon after the confirmation of attack from Zunami, both the affected tokens plummeted sharply. UZD dropped 99% to nearly $0, losing its peg, while zETH fell by 89% to a low of $206. UZD is currently trading at $0.0118 at press time, according to CoinGecko.
Zunami Protocol, a yield farming aggregator for stablecoin staking, has been promising the highest Annual Percentage Yield (APY) as a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO), with $5 million in Total Value Locked, according to its website.
Zunami also promised users to diversify their stablecoin portfolio while avoiding any crashing risk. The price manipulation risk, however, has put a massive dent in Zunami’s reputation.
SlowMist Reportedly Warned Zunami
Xian Yu, founder of blockchain security platform SlowMist, said that their firm had identified the attack nearly two months before. The Zunami Protocol apparently received warnings from SlowMist, albeit unnoticed until the breach.
Yu said that despite repeated warnings sent to the Protocol, “it was an unpleasant communication.”
The decentralized nature of the DeFi ecosystem makes it a lucrative target for attackers, stressing on the importance of high security measures and timey actions on such vulnerabilities.
