Book 2 au with Zuko and Katara Lee and Huamei

Katara is separated from her friends, and so she's left to travel the earth kingdom on her own. She stumbles across Zuko, who is similarly travelling on his own. They decide that pairing up and travelling together would be best

Everyone talks about how towards the end of the series we see waterbending techniques being used in firebending etc and like showing how they are all learning from each other but literally six episodes into book one we have Sokka chopping off the ends of spears to render his opponents useless like Zuko did to him in episode one……..

Zutara AU where the SWT use bracelets instead of necklaces for marriage. Zuko is extra confused when Katara is both flustered and furious at him for wearing her mother's necklace around his wrist. (And why Uncle keeps quoting proverbs about romance)

Years later, Katara carves Zuko a similar looking bracelet and the realization hits him like a ton of bricks.

so, not sure how to bring this headcanon up, but basically my great-aunt had a dog that only ate when someone came to the her bowl and pretended to try to take her food. as soon as someone reached out, she would growl and the bowl would be empty. I had to feed her a couple times and it was… quite an experience. (like, she wasn't a very big dog, but I wasn't very big back then either, so—)

anyway, this scene with Iroh and Zuko has similar vibes. I can easily imagine that "Are you gonna eat that? No? Then may I?" is a typical Uncle's tactic to get Zuko to eat, because he tends to forget about food even when it's right in front of him. But as soon as Iroh pretends to take it, Zuko is like "no, nope, no way, mine."

And on the rare occasions when Zuko shrugs and waves it off like "whatever, I'm not hungry," Iroh gets a double portion, so it's always a win-win scenario for him.

(That is, except for the months they spent on a raft at sea and then on the run in the Earth Kingdom, when Zuko refused to eat, no matter how hard Iroh tried to talk or trick him into it).

There's a spirit on his ship, except Zuko doesn't believe that for one second. Toph Beifong is unmistakably human. He has no idea how the little earthbender has figured out how to bend metal, but he doesn't care what his crew says. He knows she's purely human.

He just has no idea what she thinks she's doing here.

It's baffling. She talks to him like she knows him, but they've literally never met before. He's positive he would remember her if he had. Even more confusing is why she's decided to throw her lot in with the Fire Nation- that's not how most Earth Kingdom denizens react to his general existence. She definitely has an ulterior motive.

He's just not smart enough to figure out what it is.

He also can't kick her off his ship. She won't let him- and Uncle doesn't seem interested in doing it either. Take this as a rare chance to make a new friend, nephew! It is not often one comes along quite like this! Zuko just scoffs. He has no intention of making friends with an earthbender.

...even if it was kind of funny when she'd bent metal to trip Zhao that one time. They both agree he's a pompous windbag. So does Uncle, but he's too polite to ever actually say that. Toph has no such qualms. She never hesitates to make fun of anybody- including himself. Actually, she makes fun of him a lot.

He can return the favor. What kind of idiot tries to walk barefoot on a metal ship at the South Pole?

She'd punched him in the arm when he'd tried to ram the little ramshackle Water Tribe village with his boat. She punched him in the arm a lot, actually, but this one hadn't been friendly- because punching is apparently how she shows her affection, and she's decided he should be on the other end of it.

Ugh. Fine. Don't ram the village. Just pull up alongside it.

(...Agni, he's very glad she'd decided to retreat to the warmth of the boiler room. She definitely would have made fun of him for getting clocked by that Water Tribe kid's boomerang.)
