I don’t want to write about what it was like being a Canadian Arab teen in 2001, because it doesn’t really matter.

I don’t want to write about what constitutes a good apology and what the statute of limitations on racist acts should be, because who cares what I think?

I don’t want to write about blackface or brownface, and try to compute my feelings about seeing our prime minister donning both as if I’m any sort of representative or bellwether for Black or Brown Canadians’ feelings, because I’m not.

I want to write about Canadian media, and how when these things happen, the worst part for me is that I don’t see any Black or Brown faces telling me about it. Because I’d know those faces would come closer to understanding how complicated my feelings are, and while we’d never be monolithic in how we feel, I’d feel less frustrated and alone.

Instead of that, I see pictures of the journalists covering the Liberal campaign plane, with not even the hint of a tan in sight.

I see the first responses from the CBC and the Globe and Mail from white voices, wholly unaffected by the issues they’re so quick to comment on.

I’ve been training a neural network (based on this open-source neural network framework from Andrej Karpathy) on datasets from  recipes, to lists of Pokemon, to superhero names. I decided to see if it could invent names for new fruit varieties - I fed it a list of apple, peach, pear, plum, and cherry varieties, and asked it to generate more.

It obliged. But I’m not sure any of these are going to catch on:

WE STAND WITH JK AGAINST HATE 

JK Rowling has been subjected to an onslaught of abuse that highlights an insidious, authoritarian and misogynistic trend in social media.

Rowling has consistently shown herself to be an honourable and compassionate person, and the appalling hashtag #RIPJKRowling is just the latest example of hate speech directed against her and other women that Twitter and other platforms enable and implicitly endorse.

We are signing this letter in the hope that, if more people stand up against the targeting of women online, we might at least make it less acceptable to engage in it or profit from it.

We wish JK Rowling well and stand in solidarity with her.

This is really disappointing. I have to assume that these people either don't know what the issue is, or they are transphobic themselves. The article frames "transgender activists" as frivolous or misogynistic.

Like, is is a "transphobia row?" When a internationally recognized, millionaire author write under the pen name of a

And uses her platform to fear monger about 'dangerous trans people in the wrong bathrooms' attacking cis women.

For fuck's sake, assaulting people is a crime regardless of the gender you are presenting as at the time. Preventing trans people from using a bathroom corisponding with their gender just exposes those trans people to more violence. Trans women are women. Trans women using a mens bathroom are significantly more likely to be assaulted. If JK wanted to prevent assault, she would support trans people's rights.

JK Rowling arguing against trans people's rights is viewed as an act of violence by trans people. Her advocacy might get us killed. We are justified in being pissed off.
