MA Fashion and Textile Practices Major Project Path - 14th August

The decision was made that black white and red were the colours I wanted to use on my Anarchist of Love T-shirt. Choosing the the lyrics for this T-shirt was fairly straight forward. I had already thought that Beatles songs were a rich source of lyrics to borrow from, I had grown up listening to a lot of Beatles and Queen songs, so I knew I wanted utilise their lyrics. As I did for my Protest T-shirt I found a few good websites on love songs and got inspiration from those. 

Frankie Goes To Hollywood’s song ‘The Power of Love’ was one I knew I wanted to use when I used the lyrics from their previous hit ‘Two Tribes’ on my Protest T-shirt. Released towards the end of 1984 and the third single to be released from the bands debut album Welcome to the Pleasuredome, ‘The Power of Love’ became their third consecutive number one. 

The songs release was preceded by an advertising campaign concocted by ZTT making the bold statement that the song was to be the bands third number one, a prediction which became reality. Not intentionally meant as a Christmas song it reached its number one status in early December 1984, but was quickly knocked off the top spot Christmas week by Band Aid’s - ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas?’ narrowly missing becoming a Christmas number one.

Although not lyrically written with Christmas in mind, the video portrays the story of the Nativity, so I assume ZTT possibly wanted to cash in on the time of year the song was released, with the idea the song could possibly reach the top spot Christmas week. The cover of the single featured The Assumption of the Virgin by Italian Renaissance artist Titian. Courting a religious aesthetic seemed to be the path ZTT and the band wanted to take, a cleverly devised departure for a band who had been so hell bent on causing controversy. Ironically the use of this religious imagery still caused some amount of controversy, albeit less than previously.   

The songs sound was quite a departure from the bands previous two tracks, it was a slower paced power ballad and contained quirky and surprisingly bold lyrics. The opening lines say ‘I’ll protect you from the Hooded Claw/Keep the vampires from your door’ The Hooded Claw refers to a character in the animated series The Perils of Penelope Pitstop where Penelope’s guardian Sylvester Sneekly has a crooked alter ego The Hooded Claw who was always attempting to kill Penelope and take her fortune. I feel with words like: ‘Love is danger/Love is pleasure/Love is pure, the only treasure’. Holly Johnson, Peter Gill, Mark O'Toole and Brian Nash wrote the song inspired from their own experiences of love. I chose ‘Make love your goal’ to use on my anarchist of Love T-shirt because love is the emotion that transcends any other and making love your goal should be about loving yourself and each other. No matter how different we can be, love communicates to each and every one of us. Holly Johnson (2012) said of the song:

“I always felt like The Power of Love was the record that would save me in this life. There is a Biblical aspect to its spirituality and passion; the fact that love is the only thing that matters in the end.”
