A random headcanon for you, my darlin’:

We all know by now that I headcanon Asher as a gifted artist. And since Darlin’ moved in with Sam, Asher gave them the same housewarming gift he gave Davey and Angel: a hand-drawn piece of the both of them (already framed). He used a picture of them from a Solstice party as his base so they’re both slightly dressed up, with loving looks on their faces

Asher refuses to tell anyone where the picture came from because both Sam and Darlin were avoiding cameras all night

Sweetheart cloaked and took the picture when they thought no one was looking

It was a stupid idea.

"Excuse me?"

"It's a trend!" Tank defended. "We sit down, set a time limit, and then show each other the result. It's fun!"

But the way that Darlin' was looking at him, begging him to do this--well, he couldn't say no, could he?

"Alright. Let's go then."

Darlin' would later deny this, but they lit up before rushing off to get the supplies. Sam chuckled, chest fighting in the surge of affection for them.

A few minutes later, they were sitting across from each other in the kitchen, supplies spread out on their respective sides, and papers connected to clipboards to "prevent cheating" (in Darlin's words). How they would cheat at drawing each other, Sam wasn't sure, but he was just along for the ride at this point.

"Ten minutes," Darlin' announced, setting a timer on their phone. "That should be long enough. You ready?"

"As ready as I can be," Sam said, a small smile on his face.

"Alright," Darlin' set the phone in between them, finger hovering over the start button. "And. Go!"

The timer started, and Darlin' grabbed their pencil in a haste. Sam wasn't sure where to start. His pencil hovered above the paper as he worried his lip between his teeth. There was just so much about his Darlin' that he loved, he wouldn't forgive himself if he left something out, or didn't do their beauty justice.

30 seconds tick by. With a deep breath, Sam started.

He wasn't new at drawing, by any means. He had taken classes around realism for a while and had a habit of drawing those around campus when he was in school. It had just been a while. The first few marks he made he went back on immediately. After a while, as he got more comfortable, it got easier. He kept glancing up at Darlin', watching how their eyes focused on what they were working on, how the sun caught on their eyes, highlighting the colour, the way that their lips parted just so in concentration.

Sam was always told that he was quiet, but when he was quiet he was observant, and his favourite thing to observe was his Mate. There were so many little things that fascinated him about Darlin', and he couldn't get enough. Sam learned something new every day about them and of course, he learned their habits and systems. He could live and breathe Darlin' if the situation ever called for it.

Ten minutes flew by way faster than he wanted it to, but he was proud of the work he was able to finish.

Darlin' resolutely set down their coloured pencil, sighing. "Okay. Are we ready to show off the results?" They asked, excitement just barely being held back.

"Do you want to go first?" Sam asked.

Darlin' nodded, grabbing for their phone. "We're recording this so I can send it to the mates later."

Sam chuckled but didn't object.

"Okay! Here, hold this up beside your face for comparison," they said, handing him their paper. "Don't look at it yet!"

Sam did, smiling to himself.

"Okay, you can look," Darlin' said.

Sam turned the paper around, and couldn't help the small laugh that escaped him. In the most loving way possible, it looked like something an eleven-year-old would draw.

"Don't laugh!" Darlin' reprimanded.

"I'm not laughing at it," Sam said, "It's just so... good."

"Don't say good like that," Darlin' groaned.

"I mean it. I love it, Darlin'. I'll cherish it forever."

Darlin' got flustered at those words, but they refused to comment at it. "Let me see yours already, I'm sure you didn't do much better."

Sam shrugged. "That's for you to judge."

"Here, take the phone," Darlin' said, turning the phone around and stretching over the table. Sam did, trying to keep the camera steady. "Now give me your paper so people can compare."

Sam did, and watched as Darlin' held it next to their face. He had to say, sitting like this, he was very proud of how it came out. He felt like he really captured who they were. Darlin' finally turned the paper around, and their jaw dropped just a bit once they saw it.

"You didn't tell me you could draw!" They protested.

Sam laughed, head falling back a bit. "You never asked," he countered.

"Yeah but like," Darlin' gestured to the paper, "this is like, really good!"

"So you like it?"

"I love it, Sam," Darlin' said. The sincerity in their voice was evident, and it made Sam smile bigger. He stopped the recording before he continued.

"I'm glad."

"I feel like mine's awful now. Look at this!"

"Your's is perfect, Darlin'," Sam assured. "We can put them up side by side."

"I don't know if I want to do that," Darlin' said.

Sam stood, walking over to them. "They deserve to be put together," he argued, tilting their head up so he could kiss them, "just like we deserve to be together.

Darlin' groaned, rolling their eyes, "Don't be all sappy on me right now."

"Never," Sam said, smiling down at them before pulling them into another kiss.

"When did you even learn to draw?" Darlin' asked.

Sam shrugged. "I had a lot of free time between classes, so I used to draw the people around me. They weren't the stillest subjects, but it gave me good practice. Especially in learning to draw fast, because there is no guarantee they would stay there for more than a few minutes."

"How come I never heard about this?"

Sam laughed, "Again, because you never asked."

Darlin' rolled their eyes. "Jerk."

Sam hummed, "A jerk that you love."

"Not the point."

"Sure it isn't," Sam said, kissing them again.

Milo’s words were venomous, spat at Tank so viciously that they flinched. Their mouth opened, then closed, and repeated the movements over and over before Milo realized their eyes looked glassy. He could only spare a shred of sympathy for them, his anger overpowering any sense of empathy for anyone else.

“I-” Tank began, their voice sounding choked. “Milo, I’m sorry. I n-never- No one else was supposed to get hurt-”

“Screw what was supposed to happen,” Milo snapped. “It didn’t. That’s it. Quinn has my mate and there’s nothing the two of us alone will be able to do.”

Coconut.

The warehouse was trashed from the pack party but David couldn’t quite muster the energy to care. It was almost four in the morning. He should start sending them home… really he should have done that an hour ago. Several of the pack were already passed out on the couches or the floor. He knew they kept some bedding at the warehouse but he hadn’t realized it was quite this much. They’d basically built a nest.

Fuck it. They could sleep here. At least he wouldn’t have to worry about them all getting home safely. He closed his eyes, arms folded across his chest and body settling into the couch. He could make breakfast in the morning. That would be nice.

The couch bounced when someone plopped down next to him.

He didn’t have to open his eyes to know who it was. He could feel their aura against his. Loyal, sharp, quick to anger, quick to run, brave, but so damn scared. His nose wrinkled, eyes still closed. “Why do you smell like coconut?”

He felt them shrug, their arm against his.

David opened his eyes and turned his head to look at Darlin. Their eyes were half-lidded. They’d been riding their buzz for the last hour or two. His gaze flicked to their mouth and the gloss on their lips.

“This was all Milo had,” they explained with another shrug.

David nodded, watching their lips move as they spoke. He was riding a buzz too. Their mouth was lush. Why hadn’t he noticed that before? He’d been crushing on this idiot for years but never really noticed those lips... They’d been flirting for months now. Asher didn’t think Darlin really thought they were flirting though. He was probably right.

David uncurled his arms and held out a hand, palm up, doing gimmie fingers.

Darlin grinned. “You want some?”

“Hn.” He wanted it.

Something mischievous lit their eyes and they tipped their chin up, offering their lips, eyes always on him, daring him to get some.

David smiled despite all efforts not to. “Oh, don’t be cute.” Don’t tempt me, he thought.

Darlin laughed and looked away, sinking back against the cushions next to him, shoulder to shoulder and thigh to thigh. “Wait. Did you just say that I’m cute?” They turned their head to look at him again, surprise hitting late.

David was looking back, their faces close. He saw the moment Darlin realized it and heard their pulse jump. Their gaze flicked down to his mouth. They didn’t pull away, but forced a sideways smile that made him think they were about to say something self-deprecating to cut the tension…

“No one would call me cute, Davey.”

Yep. He didn’t look away. “I did. Want me to call you more names?” he asked, deadpan and patient.

Their eyes widened a fraction and he could practically hear the battle in their mind, wanting to egg him on, wanting to know what he would say, but not wanting to risk it either. They nodded once. The whole warehouse was a hive of activity but it all faded.

“You bite hard, you’re brave, and your mouth is really pretty.”

Darlin’s eyes were as wide as he’d ever seen them and their smile was an explosion. “Fuck you, you did not just say my mouth was pretty!”

David ignored all of his own nerves and the heat climbing his face. He wasn’t going to look away from this. “I said really pretty.”

“You’re messing with me, Shaw.”

He finally smiled, because how could he not when they served it up like that? “I’ll mess with you if you want, any time… if you’re willing to share your chapstick.”

Darlin stared, practically gawked, seeming to realize again just how close they were sitting. “You’re drunk,” they said in way of explanation.

David just watched them, waiting. He was tipsy, sure, but he wasn’t drunk and they knew it. Their eyes flicked to his lips again. He wanted so much to close that distance but he couldn’t. He needed them to make that move.

His heart beat faster when the leaned in, his hands curling into fists against his own arms to keep from grabbing at them right away. They kissed him so softly, lips sticky with that coconut chapstick. For a split second after, he felt the flutter of uncertainty in them, not regret for kissing but fear that it was a joke at their expense and they’d fallen for it—that he didn’t feel the same—that he was just messing with them. It all vibrated there across those indescribable threads that connected them.

David reached across and curled a hand behind their neck, pulling them in again and this time kissing them deep enough to taste the pina colada on their tongue. The kiss was long and slow and when it broke he smiled. “So… You like coconut, huh?”

Darlin grinned back. “Don’t you?”

He nodded. He did now.

His voice held that tenderness that I’ve grown to love and appreciate so much. As he held me and looked at me with his sparkling, silver eyes, I thought about a lot.

Sam Collins.

Samuel collins to some, the Duke of the Solaire clan to others.

But to me, he was Sam.

The Sam I couldn’t thank enough for running into me that day in WonderWorld on my hunt for Quinn.

The Sam who brought me peace when I never thought I deserved it.

If you once asked me if I would ever exchange my treasured life as a shifter with one of a vampire, I wouldn’t give it a second thought. But, as I stared into the eyes of the man who taught me what love was, the choice was no longer black or white.

Would I be able to stare into the mirror and recognize the figure staring back at me. My dark eyes turned bright, and my wolf canines being transformed to those of a vampire. Did intrusive thoughts like these plague Sam after his turning?

I love the man Sam is today, but would I love the person I became tommorow?

As I shifted my head from his chest, I gazed into his beautiful features and softly asked, “What colour were your eyes when you were human?”

I could feel his energy shift once I asked. It was a moment before he answered with a thoughtful and solemn look on his face: “Brown. My eyes were brown.”

Brown. Just like mine. A part of me couldn’t imagine him with brown eyes since I’ve grown to associate Sam with the beautiful twinkle of his grey irises. At the same time, thinking of him with brown eyes brought a smile to my face. I couldn’t explain why, it just felt so perfectly Sam. Both the colours captured his essence perfectly.

“I bet they were beautiful. Just as beautiful they are now.”

Because of the contents of some of the fics/discussions in the segment, I am asking minors to not interact. I managed to get through 30 of the 49 submitted before finalizing things for submission, but! I still plan on reading through the remaining submissions and scoring them on their cards/sheets (which I will make a second post about soon).

As previously mentioned, the focus on my project was dissecting the portrayal of queer masculinity as it appears in fanfiction. Majority of the final is me gushing over the fics with commentary woven in between, so I hope it's enjoyable for anyone who chooses to read and/or listen to it.
