This is Abdulrazak Gurnah, who just won the Nobel Prize in Literature. In his novels he writes about colonialism and refugees and displacement. I assume he’s far too important to be on Instagram and won’t mind that I used his image for a little portrait practice. Gouache is tricky for portraits, I think, because colors can sometimes mix unpredictably, and white gouache can get chalky. But this week I realized that the Zorn palette might be ideal for gouache, so this is the first in a series of experiments using the recent Nobel winners as models. The Zorn palette, named after Anders Zorn, is just four colors: yellow ochre, red (I’m using cadmium-free red), white, and ivory black. The black has to be a bit bluish for it to work. The white that Zorn used was lead white. Most painters use Titanium white today. I think maybe the secret to a good Zorn palette in gouache is to use zinc white, which is less opaque and therefore less chalky. For this one I used titanium white, but I have some zinc white coming today, so stay tuned for more exciting installments. Today I painted the petals and stem of this pink rose. Out of the zorn palette I used Cadmium red, Yellow Ochre and Titanium White to paint the petals. This oil painting is almost done. It has occurred to me that maybe I shouldn’t have chosen Nobel laureates for portrait practice 🙂. These are very important and impressive people and I get way too hung up on trying to create a likeness that lives up to who they are. This is Maria Ressa, an absolutely fearless and fierce journalist running a news organization in the Philippines that speaks truth to power. She just won the Nobel Peace Prize, for chrissake. She’s writing a book right now called How To Stand Up to a Dictator and that is a book we should all probably read. Anyway, this is not a great likeness of Ms. Ressa, but it is so hard-earned that I wanted to post it anyway. In my last post I talked about experimenting with the Zorn palette in gouache. For this one I was going to use zinc white instead of titanium white. After TEN attempts, I ditched the zinc white, went back to titanium, and here we are.
