Rainy Zoo Day Has been awhile since I’ve been to the zoo. Hoping to feed the giraffes; however, on this rainy day giraffes, gorillas, and elephants choose stay in. Nonetheless this visit got to see the new ones. Tiny tree frogs, slick sea otters, and napping dragons #lazoomtours #lazoo #zoo #zoosmatter (at Los Angeles Zoo) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cn6SapOuTuK/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The signage at the #cougarmountainzoo was wonderfully straightforward: #zooanimals are #wildanimals and will act accordingly for their species, and no, you may not annoy or tease the #predators . Each enclosure's signs outlined the range of normal behaviors for the species, serving doubly for both safety information and education. #zoosmatter #dontteasethetigers #speciestypicalbehaviour #notapettingzoo (at Cougar Mountain Zoo)

Either there isn’t much of a SeaWorld/marine park community on tumblr or I’m just really bad at finding them?! I’m used to instagram and twitter, it’s so much easier to find people to follow there lol.
Here’s a tag spam I guess so if you see this, let’s be moots? If anyone is out there?

If you ask a child to draw a picture of an animal in a zoo, chances are they will draw an animal behind bars, we want to change that image

@Regrann from @dallaszoo - #GlobalTigerDay: It's sadly believed that there are more pet tigers living in Texas than there are in the wild. Let that sink in. There are many factors causing the decline of the largest living cat species. Habitat loss, poaching, prey depletion, and tiger-human conflict have dropped Asia's #tiger numbers to fewer than 3,500 today. Dallas Zoo's five #Sumatrantigers are among the smallest and most endangered tiger subspecies, with fewer than 400 left in the wild. On this special day, please consider donating directly to the Tiger Conservation Campaign through AZA's Tiger Species Survival Plan to help accredited zoos save these majestic animals: www.tigercampaign.org AND meet our five amazing Sumatran tigers -- Kipling (pictured here), Melati, Hadiah, Sukacita and Manis -- in this throwback blog about our cats' personalities and their distinctive characteristics: bit.ly/DZTigers #catsofinstagram #savingspecies #zoosmatter #endextinction (at Dallas Zoo)

Happy National Zookeeper Week!!! The skills I learned about animal husbandry and passion for wildlife conversation are still with me today thanks in part to lessons learned as a zookeeper in the early part of my career. Animals still come first, I scoop poop like nobody's business and always am happy to sacrifice holidays. But most of all I love instilling a passion for animals in others. #nationalzookeeperweek #aazk #animalcupcakes #zoosmatter

I’m missing these beauties since my zoo is still closed due to coronavirus. They were once extinct in the wild but captive breeding programs led to reintroduction and now there are a few hundred of them in Panama #zoosmatter

Lovely and lanky, the panamanian gold frog (Atelopus zeteki) is well known. Critically endangered, conservationists are working as hard as they can to preserve this beautiful frog. Image ©2013 John P. Clare

"Passing the ORCA Act will ensure future generations of orcas stay where they belong: in the wild, not in captivity." WRONG!
What Congressman Rick Larsen is spreading here are unfortunately alternative facts. The ORCA Act will change nothing: The Southern Residents Killer Wahles (SRKWs) are dying. This population is living on the brick of extinction and the ORCA act will change nothing concerning this sad, but real fact.
Tumblr media
People making you believe the ORCA Act helps conservation or protecting wildlife, are simply lying. Making humane husbandry of orcas impossible in the United States moreover harms the conservation of the species, the populations and their habitats. We need a population or orcas in human care to research and educate people how to save this magnificent dolphin species.
The Southern Residents are not the killer whale only population needing us. Looking at the Vaquitas give us an impression of what we will be facing with the SRKWs in a few years: we have to collect the animals and bring them in human care or they will be extinct forever. There are no 'future generations in the wild, who are able to survive. It will be the same with the SRKW.
We experienced decades of research with exclusion of animals in human care concerning the Southern Residents and nothing became better - it became even worse. In May 2015, SeaWorld and National Fish and Wildlife Foundation announced the creation of the Killer Whale Research and Conservation Program (KWRCP). This program started research about prey availability, habitat quality, and standardizing protocols for monitoring whales in the wild. The scientists at SeaWorld conducting groundbreaking studies to improve the lives of wild whales. They combined the knowledge and the possibilties of a humane human care of orcas with knowledge form animals in the wild - only in combination of these two research options there will be a possibilty to ensure future generations of orcas stay in the wild and and be an iconic and beloved part of Pacific Northwest culture.
Tumblr media
Rick Larsen now aims to eliminate one of these two possibilties and destroy sustainable, effective and important conservation of the whales he wants to save. We need modern zoos and aquariums housing orcas with a sustainable breeding program - now more than ever. Only they can enable the research AND education we need to save orca populations.
We invite Rick Larsen visiting Zoos Saving Species to see, how many species modern zoos and aquariums could help in the past, are saving in the present and still will be saving in the future. Projects like Zoo Nation, Dier & Zoo and Zoos.media share great and successfull projects, explain the importance of zoos and show people how modern zoos do their work their important work. We are not able to face the sith extinction without these institutions.
Banning the humane husbandry of orcas once and for all gives you the guarantee there will be no future generations of orcas stay in the wild and and be an iconic and beloved part of Pacific Northwest culture. So we appeal to all politicians participated to ask the most important question: Do you want to destroy the last chance of the threatened orcas of the world to survive? If your answer to this question is "yes", you should support Mr Larsen's calls on congress to end orca captivity once and for all and eliminate the last chance of the Southern Residents. If your answer to this question is "no", you have to support the zoological community to build modern installations for a breeding program of orcas, where the research, we need to save these orcas, can be conducted.

Background: The ORCA Act is the result of lobbying from animal rights organizations. These organizations spend the majority of their money and time in campaigns basing on misinformation and fake news and including manipulations and lies. They don't really care about animals, they only only focus on their ideology against the husbandry of animals like dogs, cats, horses, rats, parrots ... and, like in this case, orcas. Dolphins are just the beginning - they won't stop until everybody lost the beloved animals in her or his care.

“Wuuddya mean I’m endangered?” Sad but true... It’s estimated that there are fewer than 8000 cheetahs in the wild. Thankfully there are several reputable organizations working hard to save them, including San Diego Zoo Global. From ambassadors to help you connect in person to an extensive breeding facility and conservation work in Africa - I am proud to be part of an organization working so hard to #EndExtinction. . . . . . #InternationalCheetahDay #CheetahDay #cheetah #exclusive_wildlife #savingspecies #makingadifference #sandiegozoo #safaripark #zookeeper #wildlife_vision #wildlifeeducation #zoosmatter #conservation #wildlifeconservation #wildlifeaddicts https://www.instagram.com/p/Bq_KjP4nJW9/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1gapq2bsfer4g

Same squirrel, same. Working short handed on an already halved staff team is exhausting. But we do it for our love of the animals, at the @thequeenszoo, who can’t take care of themselves. The finish line is nearing - two days left until 8 days off to rest. #zoo #zookeeper #zookeepersofinstagram #zookeepers #zookeeping #zoolife #zoolifestyle #zoosmatter #essentialworkers #covid19 #covid #covid2020 #quarantinelife #quarantine #queenszoo #queenszoonyc #squirrelsofinstagram #squirrel #squirrels (at Queens Zoo) https://www.instagram.com/p/CAJABqRpa5_/?igshid=1rq2o3ov7k34j

Ejea, a blue-and-gold #macaw at the #cougarmountainzoo, shows off his "peekaboo" behavior! Keeper staff told us he originally offered the behavior on his own, so all they had to do was capture it and put it on cue. Eventually, he picked up saying "peekaboo" himself! (Not pictured: a million and one repetitions of the behavior while he was on his perch, because it made the children shriek and laugh every time). #zoosmatter #blueandgoldmacaws #birdtraining #zooanimaltraining #positivereinforcement (at Cougar Mountain Zoo)
