adjust pronouns, names, and details as needed… assorted quotes taken from marvel ultimate alliance 3: the black order. part 2 of ???
❝ Your pocket is not safe place, space-bro.❞
❝ Really?! Come on, man, I only to make speeches like that once, twice a year tops! ❞
❝ That may be true, but a war is won by fighting one battle at a time. ❞
❝ As long as we have each other's backs along the way, victory will stay without reach. ❞
❝ I have seen my fair share of dark futures. What I have learned is that no fate is sealed until we choose it to be. ❞
❝ If the ending you saw is not the one you desire, then we will fight for a better one together! ❞
❝ Took you long enough. Good thing I charge by the hour... ❞
❝ Just look for the ancient ninja temple of top of a skyscraper. You can't miss it. ❞
❝ Oh, you know me. I just love this superhero stuff… ❞
❝ Oh, did I mention that the ancient ninja temple is guarded by actual ninjas? If not, I probably should've… ❞
❝ Whatever it is, they're sneaky little jerks. So watch out! ❞
❝ Stick to the shadows or you'll never make it to the temple… at least not in one piece. ❞
❝ Way to go. You've been made. Why not just announce you're here? ❞
❝ You don't really seem like the "super-team" type... ❞
❝ Oh, I'm not. Spandex is my arch-nemesis. ❞
❝ Someone's gotta keep the streets safe for normal people while all the other heroes are busy fighting giant squids on the moon or whatever. ❞
❝ You gonna tell me how you got through all that without gettin' caught? ❞
❝ Nope. Gotta keep the mystery in our relationship alive somehow, babe. ❞
❝ The soul is eternal, but the flesh is weak. Allow me to show you, as I rend it from your bones! ❞
❝ After all, I make killing an art. ❞
❝ Do me a favor and die already. ❞
❝ I have a reputation to maintain! ❞
❝ Heh. You think you won, but you really missed the mark. ❞
❝ When the big man gets done with you... you're gonna wish you'd let me put outta your misery. ❞
❝ I'm no defender of the innocent. What use could you heroes possibly have for an assassin? ❞
❝ Why so glum, chum? ❞
❝ All of this is so much bigger than us. I mean, I can barely do my own laundry. Stopping cosmic annihilation is a bit outside my comfort zone. ❞
❝ Sure. At least for today. Go ahead. Say it. You know you want to. ❞
❝ Avengers Assemble, baby! ❞
❝ You are such a nerd. ❞
❝ Which leads me to an extremely important question... Can I keep 'em? ❞
❝ Suddenly less worried about external threats and more concerned about the ones in here. ❞
❝ You bet. Not even a ripped seam. Which is a good thing, because I just spent a fortune redesigning this costume!❞
❝ It's...complicated. But let's just say he's from the side of the family that isn't invited to be in holiday photos anymore... ❞
❝ There's no chance I'm jumping ship now, even with an evil robot army ripping up our home! ❞
❝ Would you mind if I include this conversation on my latest Avengers fanfic? ❞
❝ I'm scrapping it after this and putting in a Zen garden! ❞
❝ You are the wind beneath my wings. ❞
❝ Just hold back that oversized Iron Man knockoff and clear me a place to land! ❞
❝ Almost there, team... and I'm headed in hot! ❞
❝ How come giant robots always attack on my day off? ❞
❝ You gave it your best shot, bolts-for-brains... Now I'll take mine. ❞
❝ Oh, you know. Just grappling with a synthezoid the size of a skyscraper. Typical day at the office. ❞
❝ Seriously, who stores a giant killer robot in a warehouse in New Jersey? ❞
❝ Umm, Couldn't you have asked me that, like, twenty punches ago? I mean, REALLY! That totally would have made everything so much easier! ❞
❝ Were you guys having a party without me? ❞
❝ You know… I'm not so sure they meant that as a compliment… ❞
❝ Guess it wouldn't be Earth if New York wasn't under attack by giant robots… ❞
❝ I bet you've seen way stranger stuff in space, right? ❞
❝ Well, we're half way there… …ahem… Seriously? How do you not break into the chorus of an '80's rock anthem after that set-up? And you call yourself a hero… ❞

back !! could i pretty please ask for a [ 🪩 ] who's your money on? for f1, no gender preference ( although i guess maybe i don’t need to say that when they’re all gents 😅 ) ?
so, my name is dolly — you knew that — and i’m a panromantic asexual person. my gender is… weird 😅 because really I think gender is an odd social construct and I don’t really care what people refer to me as. I’m also autistic, and some of my special interests include musical theatre, books, true crime, superheroes, and mythology of all different kinds and cultures. i don’t get the opportunity to talk about my special interests a lot, but once I do, you’ll have a hard time getting me to stop talking.
as for hobbies, i spend most of my time either reading or writing fanfiction ( and sometimes original short stories ), listening to music, and watching movies or tv shows. i mostly like all kinds of music, but i’m not really the biggest fan of rap. i’m also really into true crime podcasts, and I have a love for older tv shows, such as m*a*s*h and the a-team, as well as all the marvel and dc movies and tv shows. i’m also a pretty decent singer, at least depending on who you ask. i really love books, and my ultimate career goal is to be a librarian ( although if you asked me my absolute dream job, the answer would be a voice actor ). i’m also a half-decent singer, at least depending on who you ask.
personality-wise, i kind of cycle between being bubbly and cheerful and quieter and shyer ( a textbook ambivert, me ), but no matter what, i always do my best to be a good listener and to make my friends happy, because I am very loyal and I love them a lot.
looking forward to seeing what you come up with for this !! hope you’re doing well, love <3 <3
thank you again for sending something in dolly lovely !!! now i promise at all i'm not biased with this but-
❤︎ . . . i'd have to ship you with daniel ricciardo !
look look look , i know he's your favourite but this all just screamed danny to me. he absolutely adores your personality, and thinks it works perfectly with his own ! you're both bubbly, cheerful people, but daniel is more than happy to step up and be the more extroverted one when you're feeling shy. (he also thinks you're the cutest thing in the world when you get quiet)
daniel always mentions one of your interests in a throwaway comment, just to see the sparkle in your eyes when you get a chance to talk about it. he loves to sit and listen to you talk - especially about mythology - and even asks questions, properly engaging in the conversation instead of just letting you talk at him and zoning out!
he also loves to sing with you ! if you guys are driving anywhere, he's putting you on aux and singing loudly along to every and any songs he recognises. he states it's unfair, because you can actually sing, but it doesn't stop him from belting out every last lyric.
danny is so invested in your writing, too. he's always asking what you're working on and if you have anything he can read a little bit of, then proceeds to sing your praises for the next few days because how can his partner be so talented ??
sometimes you'll be so absorbed in your writing that you don't even notice him reading over your shoulder. it's only when he lets out a "holy shit, that's good!" that you realise he's standing there, and has been for the past five minutes or so.

Wish upon - Bucky Barnes x Reader
Title: Wish upon
Pairing: Bucky Barnes x Reader
Warnings: None
Summary: You were close when Wanda’s grief took over and she inevitably started controling an entire town, including you. Being her closest friend, though, instead of simply playing along, you were given a normal life of your own, with a daughter and husband whom you knew very well but never thought you had feelings for. Months later as you try to figure out your emotions for Bucky, the man seems to be trying to find every reason to stay close to you. Including asking you to join him when he’s ready to follow Sam in his adventures.
“Is that... Is that what I think it is?” you blinked several times, head tilted as you took in the object your husband was, full of pride you could clearly tell, holding and showing off to you.
“You bet it is. Polished, glittered or bedazzled, I can never tell the difference it's equally sparkly anyway, but above all ready to deliver justice. It's finally finished. Right on time at that.” he set the small pink and sparkly shield on the kitchen counter, right next to the baby bottle you'd just filled, because he knew just as well as you did that it was honestly the only way you'd keep looking at the toy and hoped that you'd like it. Which you did, sure, but not in the way Bucky hoped. “Well, what do you say about it?”
“I say that it would certainly deliver justice, no doubt by dazzling the bad guys first and foremost. Besides-” you tore your eyes away from the toy to narrow them at your husband “Just on time for what?”
“Halloween, of course.” he shrugged casually as he slowly made to reach for a piece of the potatoes you'd cooked to have on the side for dinner, but you noticed him and slapped his hand away, earning a not-so-innocent smile in return “I mean... What else is there else to talk about, of significance, in a small town like Westview besides holidays and who the new otherworldly couples in town are. The second having little to no point when one's wife can read minds, amongst so many other things, and said one is a metal-armed 106-year-old.” he sighed, raising his metal arm which he usually kept covered when outside “Honestly, I don't know who're gonna get called out on it first. Wanda and Vision or us.”
“We're handling it great. Besides, oh well a 15 year old gap is so overrated anyway. I tell you, 106 is the new 30, don't you worry a second, dear. You don't look a day over that.” you smiled sweetly, leaning in to peck his lips as he grinned.
“Ah yes, coming from the woman who last time we fought you told me that it's time to stop mourning over my buddy Rexi the dinosaur cause they're all gone now.” he said with a raised eyebrow and you shrugged.
“I don't see what you mean, I was still right.” you brushed him off, checking once more the temperature of the milk “Besides, getting off track here? You still haven't explained to me how that lovely and sparkly shield is of any use to us in Halloween?”
“Well, not us, obviously.” he turned to, according to everyone including him, his little princess “Jean of course!” he picked one of her hands and let her tiny fingers wrap around one of his as she let a giggle when he kissed her belly “It's all you've been talking about with Wanda these days. Her boys have their suits already in mind, it wouldn't be right for Jean to not have hers. It's her first Halloween anyway, even if she can't do any proper trick or treat yet.”
“I'm well aware of that, seeing as I've been planning all of ours suits. And no-” you raised a finger when you saw him raise an interested eyebrow “No, I'm not wearing the skirt version of it. Besides, what we're talking about here is Jean and I still fail to see how a shield will be any part of our little Phoenix's suit.”
“Well, because it's Halloween and she's- Well, she's part of this and she'll- The shield is part of the suit, honey. Obviously. I don't see what confuses you so much as to-”
“And I don't see what confuses you so much that you'd make a shield for her, beautiful as it might be, even though it has no place in all of it. Especially after I made it quiet clear on what costume will be.” you pointed out, baby bottle back on the counter as you crossed your arms over your chest “Honestly, I would rather her have a sparkly version of Sam's redwing before incorporating the shield in her phoenix look.”
He let silence fill the room, save for your daughter's adorable baby noises, before he finally spoke in all seriousness “No, no you wouldn't. You hate that thing too... It was the main reason that made me ask the question, like when you realize you've met your soulmate.”
“I-” only half a pause before you nodded “Yeah, you're right. I hate it... although I can't really remember how it looks like sometimes to be honest. Huh weird.” you let out a breathless laugh, frowning nonetheless.
“Oh how I'd wish for that sort of blessing.” he huffed “Including its owner.”
“Hush you love him!” you hit his shoulder “And, well, that's still all besides the point. Because Jean is not going to have a redwing or shield to her phoenix look in any sort of way. Maybe next Halloween if you wanna choose the costume, fine by me. But this year I am following through with my plans and not changing my mind.”
“Plans of what? Her being a phoenix bird? I get it, it's all magical and what not but-”
“Not just any phoenix bird, geez weez, do you not even listen when I speak, Mr Barnes?” you shook your head with a roll of your eyes.
“Well, sometimes it gets impossibly hard when you look as stunning as today, Mrs Barnes. Sadly all words fade away and as I am captured by your beauty all I can seem to hear is kiss me. How can I not comply?” he said so innocently and with such an adorable smile you couldn't help your fond one in return.
Seeing such adoration and love written all over your face had your heart on overdrive again, as if it was the first time you realized you were in love with him again. It was incredible how you could barely remember that moment whenever you thought about it, however you didn't care. You couldn't find yourself to care when looking at him had your chest fill with warmth, a pleasant buzz all over your body and no weight dragging you down. He made things more simple, having his love and having him by his side made life have meaning and your future full of hope. It hadn't been easy, that much in a way you could remember, but you knew it was worth it because he was worth it. You wanted to give him all your love, wishing that it could live up to the one in his eyes for you in return, so that he could understand what you did from the first moment you met him: he deserved it.
And even if- you couldn't explain why you thought so, but even if there were ever people that would willingly leave him behind, even if you'd never understand that, you were ready to show to him that you could and would be with him till the end of the line. This love you had in you for him had sealed the deal long before you even knew about it.
If anything, you were more than willing to live in this small town, heavens in these four walls of your house, so long as you had him by your side and were able to give him all the love you didn't know you had for him.
You shook your head lightly and gave him “Sweet talking me will get you nowhere, darling. Or rather-” you paused, smirking at him “It might get you in one place. The bedroom.” you grinned when you saw his eyebrows raise in interest “To get Jean's suit. Cause I remember I have some adjustments to make.”
“Bet you do.” he huffed like a little child “Cause she'll be a bird and not a superhero who-”
“Not just a phoenix bird, Buck. The phoenix, that's different.” you pointed out, making him frown.
“How is that different? And what... is the phoenix?”
“Well, it's-” you started but paused abruptly, frowning at your own thoughts “It's actually-” you blinked several time and let out a nervous laugh “Funny thing, I... can't remember. Wow that's... it happens all the more often lately.”
“Can't be important then, right?” he brushed it off casually even though you kept frowning in deep thought which for some reason didn't lead anywhere “Certainly no more than Jean's suit that it... And how we could incorporate a shiel-”
“No.” you cut him off before he could get to complete his sentence “Not gonna happen. I've already got everything planned, you're not going to ruin my plans.”
“Is this how it's gonna go every Halloween now? Us fighting over what Jean's costume will be until she's old enough to choose herself?”
“Oh dear, of course not. It's not fighting when you don't stand a chance against me in the first place.” you shrugged innocently and he tried to look stern by narrowing his eyes at you but you smiled and pecked his lips before speaking “I mean, you could never say no to these pretty eyes, could you?” you batted your eyes at him and he very fast, much faster than last time, sighed in defeat and nodded his head “Besides, you don't have to worry. Next Halloween we'll make her a costume that incorporates the shield too, happy?”
“Always.” he breathed out with such ease that it took a few seconds for you to not openly stare at just how much relaxed he looked, how he truly meant it and how shockingly different he looked while admitting it compared to only a few months ago... months, you weren't sure of the time anymore but truth was that you didn't care, because if there was one thing you could remember was that he had not always been like this and to have him truly happy made everything worth it.
“However-” he cleared his throat, as if noticing how you'd zoned out “That doesn't really solve the problem. Having to compromise, you know. Why should any of us have to? However, if we were to have more than one option...” he trailed off, leaning in closer without any regard for your personal space, not that he needed to, as you narrowed your eyes suspiciously at him “Say... if we were to have more than one options then things wouldn't be this hard, right? Just... to make it easier on ourselves?”
“Make it easier... how exactly?”
His hands found your hips, earning a small giggle from you as he pecked your neck once, twice and three times before he kissed your cheek and the temple, whispering in the end “Let's make more.” it earned a squeal from your as your eyes widened but he grinned even more widely “Come on, think about it. A little boy or maybe another baby girl, Jean would make a great sister. And we wouldn't have to argue about the Halloween costumes. Besides... would be a fun process either way.”
“You have to be kidding me.” you gave him a serious expression but his hopeful smile- no, scratch that. His smile that was bordering that of an idiot, if not lovesick one (but you were on the same boat on that), didn't fade in the least bit “Oh you have to- Alright, Mr Barnes, how about you learn how to feed your daughter without making a mess first and then you can come and talk to me about a second or third one hm? Cause, good as you might be at changing diapers, it ain't just that.”
“She just makes a mess because she enjoys to laugh at my expense, just like you and Sam.” he pointed out and you fought back a smile “And- Hold up a second... did you just say third? You think you're gonna let me ask for a third one too?”
Your eyes widened when you realized that he was really considering the prospect before your lips parted, you being ready to retort-
Only for no words to be uttered after that from your lips. The only sound being a deep intake of air as you were startled awake. Soon followed by a groan as you took in your surroundings and realized you were sadly still in your room. Sadly? Really? You didn't know if that was the case but even if it was, you didn't want to think even more about it. You buried your face in your pillow, not ready to face the day yet because... who were you even kidding? You wanted to go back to it. If not that fake reality, if not the playhouse that Wanda had built out of her grief and had dragged you into it as well - and maybe you hated yourself for how part of you did want that - then at least your dream would be nice.
It's been months and yet it feels as if it's been just yesterday that you were all released from her control. How could you not feel that way after all? When you were awake, the fake reality you'd thought your life was constantly on your mind, and when you were asleep even if you were not thinking of it, you were dreaming about it. It was constantly on your mind. And as if the experience itself, mind-control and all, hadn't left you with a few mental scares to add to your already existing ones to take care of, then the realization of the truth that lay within your own heart, was more than enough to keep the events replaying on your mind day and night.
To put matters simply: when you had followed your best friend, Wanda, after seeing her so distraught, leaving SWORD, you had never thought you'd find yourself playing house with a fake copy of one and only James Bucky Barnes thanks to said best friend. But while there was a chance for that, you never thought there was a chance that you'd realize you had feelings for the man all along.
Your life had been different there. Maybe because you were always close with the other Avenger, who knew. While there were times where you'd experience Wanda's grief, her nightmares from time to time came to haunt you at night just like it did with the rest of the town, your life was mostly... good. No, forget that, your life was nearly perfect. You had everything you wished for and things you didn't even know you had wished for. Maybe deep down you had always wanted it, a normal life, peace and calm, a kid whether it was yours or not... Bucky. You had probably always wanted him but didn't know it yourself, no doubt you were too busy crushing over Steve.
If only your current self could see your past self, or at least self of barely a year ago, you'd have smacked some sense into your stupid self who thought Steve Rogers was the only man you could ever have eyes for. While you had come to be very close with the Captain and ended up doing almost everything together, everyone thought there was much more to the two of you, that it hadn't even occurred to you to think that Steve wasn't really the one you wanted. Maybe you had convinced yourself so, in a way that now that he was no longer there you were more shaken by the fact that you were not shaken by how he had decided to live his life with Peggy in the past than his absence itself.
You had not felt any sort of betrayal, nor that you were suddenly all alone, certainly not as if anything was missing from your life. Granted, you had plenty to think about most of the time, day and night, but that didn't change things. You wished Steve had had a happy ending and you would on the occasion miss him the way you'd miss... a brother. You were always calm, no worries or fears, content with the fact that you knew he had been happy even if it was away from you because, in a way, you wanted it to be that way, it was natural. However, the mere thought of someone else leaving, someone that you thought far too often about, made your heart leap to your throat and your stomach tie in knots. The mere thought that Bucky could leave the way Steve had done made your throat close in a painful way and your eyes burn with tears, making you realize just who mattered the most.
If, again, Wanda plucking the truth about your feelings for the man to give you a life with him wasn't proof enough.
Your phone buzzing made you jump once more, eyes landing on the device on the nightstand. Reaching for it you were not surprised to see the messages that were pilled in your inbox. All from the same specific someone. A specific someone you had found yourself speaking with all the more often lately. Each time successfully managing to make you smile in one way or another, without fail.
Good morning. :)
Did I use that one correctly? I keep forgetting them, no matter how many times you show me.
And show him you had, just like that there was an option for him to choose from different ones instead of having to type them, but that was still work in progress. So even if Bucky learning emojis was a memory that you'd cherish forever, it wasn't the only important one at the moment.
On second thought, it's a bit too early.
You're probably still asleep. Nevermind. Sorry for bothering you.
And then more, shortly afterwards.
I only wanted to know if you're alright, that's all.
Anyway, hope I didn't wake you up.
He, much like everyone else, thought it was hard on you to deal with Steve being gone so he did his best to keep in touch and being as selfish as you were, you didn't bring yourself to tell him the truth that you cared more to know about how he was and wanted the contact for that. Maybe he was also worried about you after Wanda's mind-control too. But if Sam's words were anything to go by, then it was all an excuse for Bucky to stay close with you. You didn't let your hopes get up for that reason though. You could gladly take whatever you got without wondering.
Again it was followed not much later by another message.
I've actually got something to talk to you about. Something happened, though you could already know if you saw the news. Can I come over to talk with you? I need your opinion on the matter.
And shortly afterwards came.
I've already got your favorite breakfast. To make up for, probably, waking you up. :)
The next one had taken longer, he had probably been waiting for an answer all that time. You couldn't help but feel bad about it. That and the fact that the reason behind you not replying earlier was because of how immensed you were in your fantasy life with him that you had not told him a thing about.
(Y/n)... are you sure you're alright? It's getting late even for you.
Truth was you had more trouble waking up after having a dream of that time. But you couldn't tell him that. And then there was the latest one.
Alright, I'm coming over. I really hope you're not dead in there. I'm not going to let you hear the end of it if you are. Oh dear, I sound like Sam right now. Forget I ever said that. Both of it.
Before you even had the time to think about what he could mean, because no you had really not seen the news yet, let alone type back a reply, the door to your bedroom burst open. It earned a squeal from you as you looked with wide eyes at Bucky standing on the doorway. You weren't even surprised how you hadn't heard him, not when he already had keys to your apartment and could easily sneak up on you. Not that him surprising you was what you cared about at the moment. It was, and you could only admit it to yourself, more important how you looked at the moment – and having just woken up you weren't sure just how attractive you looked – than anything else. Especially when Bucky looked better than ever with that new haircut that you were sure he'd gotten on purpose, just to test how much your heart could take.
“I thought doors existed back in your days, Barnes. Maybe knocking was an option too.”
You saw him let out a sigh of relief, shoulders relaxing “What would have been the point if you were dead? You wouldn't have replied anyway.”
“Bold of you to assume I would miss on another chance to lecture you about the proper use of emojis, Mr Barnes. Even death could not stop me.” you broke into a grin and he chuckled.
“What, did I really mess it up?” he asked with a small, far too adorable for your own good, frown.
“Oh no you got it just right.” you said softly, adoring the proud look on his face before you added “However, I've told you, you don't have to type them anymore. There is an option on your keyboard with that kind of stuff for you to-”
“Eh alright, alright I get it. I suck at it. I'm not even gonna try using them anymore.”
“Wha- No!” you whined softly “No, Buck, I didn't mean that. Come on, you're good. You just... have a lot to learn still.” you shrugged “That's all. We didn't do great at first either. Nobody really got emojis a first, but you'll get the hang of it.”
“But you still think I am a grandpa when it comes to technology. And my age doesn't help on that case either.” he shrugged, as if he meant it casually as a joke but you could see a small hint of self-consciousness there as well.
“Nonsense.” you said softly, finally throwing the blankets off you “You're far from a grandpa, Buck. In fact, I strongly believe that 106 is the new 30, and you don't look a day over that.” the words were out of your lips before you could even think about it and when you realized what you'd said, your smile flattered a bit. You were glad his back was turned to on that second that he didn't notice. You cleared your throat, sobering up “Besides, new things are not everyone's cup of tea anyway.”
“Uh yeah...” you notice the relaxed, and almost happy, look fade away from his face as his eyebrows pulled back into a frown. He looked down for a second, leaning against the doorframe with his hands in his pockets “Things do change. Sometimes faster than we can adapt to the new world around us.”
“Alright, unless you're channeling Charles Darwin right now, which I don't think you are, care to explain to me what's wrong? Because... I am guessing something is, judging by your expression.” you got up and approached “Is this... about the shield? I- I don't know if Sam giving it up is that much of a good choice however... he must have his reasons, right?”
“Well, yes, but- this is not just about that.” he sighed, finally looking up to meet your eyes “Something happened and I've been thinking about it, I wanted your opinion on it. You know it matters to me.”
“...And? There is more to that, come on. Tell me.” you knew him too well and you hadn't even realized when that happened too “You know you can... Always.”
“I do.” he paused for a moment, holding your gaze before he let a soft sigh “It's just, I am going to go find Sam and... I want you to come with me. If you're up for it, I would like you to be there with me... maybe?”
“You know... I should punch you just for doubting whether I'd follow you or not. But just because it won't lead anywhere for me-” you smirked at him “Buy me dinner too and consider yourself excused and me up for any challenge. Strongest Avenger at your disposal, Mr Barnes.” you patted his shoulder, enjoying the deep chuckle that came from him. Even if his next words made the air get caught in your throat.
“It's a date then.”

I’m on mobile, so ya know, but for @five-rivers @floralflowerpower and I just checked, lemme amend to @uwuplasmiusuwu
This is Fathering a Phantom
It was a bright summer day in Amity Park, Danny Fenton was in the grove - no one wanted to say “Amity Park Park” - doing a handstand while braced against a tree. “See? I told you I could do it.”
“You’re not using your powers to float into that position, are you?”
“Sam, I am offended that you would imply that I, of all people, would cheat at things with levitation.” Danny laughed, flopping down onto his belly in the grass. “Appalled, really, how dare you?”
Laughing, Tucker ripped up a handful of grass from his side and sprinkled it down into Danny’s bird’s nest of hair. “No of course, you are the most noble in character there is. As we have seen, you are a superhero through and through. Complete with bedsheet cape.”
Danny groaned while the three of them laughed and shook his head. “Alright, listen.”
“You, wearing black and white alone, looked at me and asked if I was willing to wear bright primary colors, Danny.” Sam patted his shoulder blade and Danny rolled his eyes. “A ghost asked a goth to wear bright colors. You shall never live that down.”
“There are pastel goths,” Danny countered with a pout. “I checked, there are goths who wear bright colors. It’s a mindset, not a fashion statement.” Tucker draped yet more grass on Danny, who turned to stare at his best friend and deadpanned, “Dude that’s kinda gay.”
Tucker snorted and laughed himself back into the tree they were sitting in front of. “H-how exactly is that gay?”
“Grass, in flower language, represents homosexual love,” Sam supplied.
Tucker covered his heart with a hand and gasped loudly. “Oh goodness me, I, a bisexual nerd, cannot be gay good sir and madam, that is simply unacceptable. Truly, this is the end of my world.”
“I will write you a gorgeous eulogy seasoned with memes,” Danny said, patting Tucker’s thigh as the latter flopped over, putting on his best ‘dying’ act. Then a chill completely at odds with the summer sun shining down on them went up his spine and out of his mouth as a cloud of icy mist. “Shit.” Danny braced for impact, a dome of green light erecting itself over the teens just in time for five missiles to strike it and explode.
When the smoke cleared and Danny transformed in a flash of light – pale skin tan, snow white hair, glowing green eyes, black and white jumpsuit, all the staples of half dead teendom – Danny locked on to his attacker. A large, mechanized man with flaming green mohawk was grinning down at him like a predator baring teeth to prey. “You’ll have to survive to his funeral first, whelp, and I assure you that’s not happening. I’ve gotten a few upgrades since last we fought, and The Hunt is on.”
While Skulker popped out a new cannon, Danny turned to check on his friends, both of whom were pulling out their own Fenton ecto-pistols. When he turned back there was an explosion of golden light and the screeching of tearing metal, and Skulker was missing half of his mech before Danny could even quip at him. Danny dropped his shield, turning to stare at the source of light with everyone else, and found his jaw had dropped very literally to the ground.
Something that could be a bear mixed with a goat, an electric eel, and at least three kinds of birds was aiming a bow at Skulker, an arrow made of golden light already knocked and shining brighter with every second. Each feather was a different color, oscillating in intensity, but overall, it was both hard to look at and impossible to look away from. “Hi there,” the ghost said with a voice that could have been a thousand people speaking in tandem. “You are going to leave in the next five seconds, or I am going to traumatize these children by showing them just how one Ends a ghost. Four. Three.”
Danny had never seen Skulker fly away so fast, especially with only one turbine to boost himself. He couldn’t even blame him, not with the burning fountain of energy beating their kaleidoscopic wings in front of him, aiming at Skulker until buildings were in the way. Danny charged up an ectoblast of his own even as the arrow dissipated. “Well, ever since all this ghost stuff I didn’t believe in guardian angels. Get lost in the Zone?” Much to Danny’s pleasant surprise, the angelic ghost laughed.
“Gods, your aura is screaming ‘fight me,’ did you know that?” The ghost turned to Danny and all the animal features melted into each other until Danny was looking at what could almost pass for a regular human being. Blond hair, brown eyes, some weird old-timey robes, and a single pair of feathery wings that reflected the light catching them like crystal glass. In the next moment, Danny was being dragged into a tight embrace, cut off from the world by arms and feathers alike, and he blinked several times, tense as a bowstring.
“I’m gonna need you to back up before I zap you,” Danny said with his hands up and a buzz traveling from his chest toward his fingertips. The ghost backed up, hands held up where everyone could see them, and wings half folded around him like a cloak.
“Apologies, my response to seeing kids almost getting hurt is to hug them. I should’ve asked first.”
“That’s very true,” Sam said with narrowed eyes. “Who are you, exactly?”
“Yeah, we don’t get many new ghosts around here who know how to speak English,” Tucker said. “Or any who help us.”
The strangely human looking ghost took a deep breath, eyes glowing from brown to golden-orange and clasped their hands together in front of their face. “Well, that explains a few things I’ve observed of you in the past two minutes. Right, so, first thing’s first; hi, I’m Tobias Lumano, you kids can call me Toby. He/him and all that.”
Danny shook the hand extended to him, ignoring the fact that a hand was held out to all three of them. “Danny, Phantom currently.”
“Tucker Foley.”
“Sam Manson. What exactly did you observe of us?” Sam still held her pistol, ready for a fight. Toby chuckled and shook his head.
“Well, Danny here is screaming ‘fight me,’ with his body language and if all you’ve ever met are hostile adult ghosts then that makes sense. You’ve got that Still Warm feel to you, like you’re only recently dead. Which makes the rumors about you impossible, of course, cause I’m pretty sure none of you are even close to being adult humans unless people look a lot younger per quarter of their life in this Realm.” Toby settled with his wings crossed over his chest, relaxed but not quite limp, and Danny cocked his head to the side.
“How do you even see with those glowing in your face all the time?”
“What about Danny screams ‘fight me,’ exactly? He’s totally chill right now.” Tucker gestured at all of Danny, bobbing idly up and down on some kind of current that he had yet to identify.
“Oh, my dear summer child, ghosts communicate in ways that non-psychic humans cannot perceive fully. You see this?” Toby brushed a feather against Danny’s glow and the teen made a face, drifting away from the odd sensation. The glow stretched with his movement before Toby backed off. “That’s your aura, little man, and it’s currently positioned in a way that’s sort of giving the finger to everyone around you. How long have you been liminal if you don’t know about your aura?”
“How long have I been what now?”
“I think he’s talking about you being half ghost,” Tucker said, whipping out his PDA and tapping away at the screen. “We’ve never actually heard a term for it before other than Sidney Poindexter calling Danny a halfa. No offense to Poindexter but that’s a really dumb name.”
Toby laughed, covering his face with a hand, and shaking his head. “Right, ok, you’ve got a lot to learn, but I think I can help with that.”
“We should probably take this discussion somewhere a bit more private than the open park,” Sam hissed. “This is supposed to be a secret, remember Danny?”
Danny rolled his eyes and turned his head around 360 degrees. “There’s no one here right now, Sam.”
“Well, if you’re keeping this a secret then yeah, you should probably find somewhere secure to talk about this at.” Toby rolled his eyes and became translucent, spreading his wings and circling around the three of them. “Here, you take this feather and just break it when you feel ready to talk with me. I’ve got some things to figure out around here.” One such feather fell into Sam’s hand, taking on the hue of several leaves in a gradient, and Toby winked at Danny before vanishing entirely from view.

When it comes to TV sisterhood, Supergirl’s Kara and Alex Danvers — played affectionately by Melissa Benoist and Chyler Leigh — fly a little higher than the rest. Whether fighting side by side or drinking wine on Kara’s cozy couch, these two women are the heart of the CW hit. Now the action drama is kicking off a two-parter that explores the roots of their bond even more.
In “Prom Night” on April 27 and “Prom Again!” on May 4 (the second half was directed by Leigh), heroic Nia Nal/Dreamer (Nicole Maines) and the data-crunching Brainiac-5 (Jesse Rath) travel back in time to prom circa 2009. Their plan? To see if the teenage Danvers siblings (Izabela Vidovic as young Kara; Olivia Nikkanen as young Alex) hold the key to locating present-day Kara — aka National City’s savior Supergirl — within the Phantom Zone. She’s been trapped in that parallel dimension since the first episode of the sixth and final season, a storyline that fortuitously accommodated Benoist’s maternity leave. Leigh calls the throwback episodes “an origin story of the Danvers sisters.”
Here, the fan favorites behind the adopted alien from Krypton and her warrior sis prove that family is all just relative.
At what point during shooting the series did you begin to feel like sisters?
Chyler Leigh: It was pretty instantaneous. And it was a surprise, I think, for both of us to look at each other and go, “Wait a minute. I’m made for you!”
Melissa Benoist: Our first couch scene [Season 1, Episode 3, “Fight or Flight”]. I threw a pillow at Chyler and thought she was going to catch it. It smacked her in the face and we couldn’t stop laughing.
Leigh: The [couch scenes] are such special moments. It brings a reprieve from all the action…and there’s so much of Mel and Chyler in there, I think that makes it even more special. I would say the vast majority of those scenes that we have done, it’s all improv by the end.
Alex has officially taken on her own super moniker, Sentinel, after a long journey as a lesbian field agent turned director of the secret agency the Department of Extranormal Operations (DEO) and, later, a vigilante. Melissa, how was it knowing Chyler would be joining the Arrowverse’s heroes to pick up the slack while you were on maternity leave?
Benoist: To me, Alex was always a superhero, so it only made sense that she got her suit and her Hand of the Soldier gauntlet [which transforms into any weapon she desires]. Like, it’s about time. And with David Harewood [Martian Manhunter] — the three of us are the OGs from the very get-go — it’s so solid that any of us can step out and the show is in good hands.
Leigh: Khakis and an Under Armour shirt [Alex’s DEO uniform] will only help you survive for so long, you know?
Chyler, you were a mom first, andMelissa, you directed the show first. Did you two trade notes on either?
Benoist: I’ve gotten to see what a wonderful mom Chyler is…she’s such a mama bear to us on the show. I learned by watching her.

Sister Oh Sister (Grey’s Anatomy)
Grey’s Anatomy
When Amelia has brain surgery to remove her tumor, her sister Y/N is with her the entire time, worried that she might lose her.
Warnings: None
Requested = Yes
Haha...finally got one done...
It’s been a while since I’ve seen the episode where Amelia gets her tumor removed so the facts might be a lil iffy.
You were the first person she told.
When she paged you to the scan room, you definitely were not expecting this bombshell.
“Oh...Amelia...” You whispered and immediately pulled her into your arms.
“It’s okay...” Amelia said, almost as if she was trying to convince herself to, “It’s benign.”
You choked back a sob at those words. It was a relief of course, but it was a tumor nonetheless and would definitely have to be removed.
That meant brain surgery.
Over the next while, you were constantly at Amelia’s side. Yes, it was partially because you knew you had to be there for her, but in a way, you were also there because you were scared.
Scared that history might repeat itself.
The few months before Derek died, you hadn’t really been around him much. Now looking back, you regretted not visiting him, Meredith and the kids more. You regretted now inviting them over for dinner more.
You didn’t want to have those regrets with Amelia.
Despite all your fear and worries though, you did you best to hide it from Amelia, putting a brave face on instead.
The day of Amelia’s surgery, you had worked yourself up so much that you spent the first half hour of the day throwing up in the bathroom at home.
You knew you were worried about her, but there really weren’t any words that would truly describe just how great that worry was.
Pulling yourself together though, you forced yourself to eat some breakfast before heading to the hospital. It was a surprise that Meredith had even managed to get you to go home since you spent all your time at the hospital since Amelia was checked in.
Parking your car, you killed the engine and was going to walk in when you realized that you couldn’t. You were so overwhelmed by everything that you just needed one moment by yourself so that you could break down without Amelia knowing.
You didn’t realize how much you had been holding back until you finally let it all out. You were sobbing so hard, you didn’t even hear the first few knocks on the window to your car.
Sniffling, you wiped your nose with the side of your hand before taking a deep breath and getting out of the car.
“You good?”
You looked over at Meredith, debating what you should tell her. Should you lie even though you knew she would see right through it?
“I will be,” You whispered, “But that doesn’t really matter right now.”
“Of course it matters,” Meredith responded, “Y/N, you’ve been driving yourself insane with worry about Amelia and I know you have your reasons but how would Amelia react if she knew what you’ve been doing?”
“What am I doing?” You asked numbly as you and Meredith headed into the building.
Meredith grabbed your arm, making you stop, “You’re not taking care of yourself Y/N. Your running yourself to the ground, you’re not eating, you’re not sleeping.”
“It’s going to be okay,” You whispered back, biting your lip as you felt the tears threaten to spill from your eyes again, “Right? She’s going to be okay.”
“Oh...Y/N,” Meredith reached out her other arm and pulled you into a hug.
You choked back a sob, “She has to be okay Mer because I swear I can’t do it again. Not after Derek...”
“I know,” Meredith mumbled and put her hand on the back of your head, rubbing it up and down.
With that, you nodded and Meredith looped her arm through yours before making your way up to Amelia’s room.
“I’ll go through the a sub frontal craniotomy, real clean, small incision,” Tom was saying as you and Meredith arrived.
Amelia saw you and gave you a weak smile which you just barely were able to return.
“So I imagine you have questions,” Tom looked at everyone expectantly.
“Yeah uh...how many of these have you done?” Dr. Bailey pointed her finger at Tom.
Tom shook his head slightly, “So...so many.”
“What’s the recovery time?” Richard added.
You tried to listen. You tried to pay attention, stay engaged, but your mind just kept wandering, going through each of the possible scenarios.
“See you at the afterparty,” Tom was saying when you zoned back in and without another word he walked out of the room.
“He’s arrogant and a showboat so DeLuca, make sure you ask him questions during surgery,” Amelia ordered, “Make him show off.”
DeLuca nodded in response and you knew that he would do that.
“And if I make it through,” Amelia started to say but Owen cut her off.
“When you make it through,” He corrected.
“Early ambulation protocol,” DeLuca finished and Amelia thanked him.
Amelia then turned to Meredith, “Meredith...if I die.”
“You are not going to die,” Meredith said.
“But if I do,” Amelia went on, “You call my mom...I’m sorry but she likes you.”
“True that,” You snorted, knowing fully that Amelia was very correct on that.
Amelia then looked over at Maggie, “And you...take my room! I totally scammed you on that.”
“Don’t be ridiculous-” Maggie started to say but Alex cut in.
“She’s right on that, it’s way better,” Alex mumbled to Maggie.
“If I’m gorked after this,” Amelia took a deep breath, “Unplug me. Don’t think about it. Go on with your lives. If I need unplugging, April has been named my power of attorney.”
At those words, everyone, including you, slowly looked over at April who had a very awkward expression on her face.
“What...was I supposed to say no?”
“I uh...I don’t know what’s me and what’s tumor talking,” Amelia looked you straight in the eyes before continuing, “But uh...in this moment, I love you people tremendously.”
~~~
You were sitting in between Meredith and Maggie, watching through the gallery at the scene below. Amelia standing...leading the superhero pose.
You watched as Amelia got onto the table and as she was preparing to lay down, she gave you a wave.
Forcing a smile, you waved back.
~~~
The entire time Amelia was in surgery, it felt like you were underwater. Not drowning, but just underwater. The sounds around you were fuzzy and even though you could see perfectly well, your eyes stung as if salt was irritating them. You were subconsciously holding your breath too, breathing only when Maggie or Meredith reminded you to.
When the surgery ended, you were slightly relieved but now you were tasked with one of the hardest things.
Waiting.
You refused to leave Amelia’s side, even though she was still unconscious. Meredith and Maggie tried to get you to leave for food, but you brushed them off, only leaving to use the bathroom.
You talked a lot to Amelia while you waited for her to wake up, knowing that she couldn’t hear you. It brought you some sort of comfort though, speaking to her as if she were awake.
“I know you’d tell me that I’m being stupid,” You laughed, holding Amelia’s hand in yours, watching her face carefully for any signs that she might be waking up.
You smiled painfully, “But I can’t leave you Amy...not after what happened with Derek. You can’t leave me...because I really need you Amy. Even though I’ve been annoying and you’ve been a pain in my ass at times, I love you so much more than I’ve ever told you.”
You reached your hand out and gently stroked your sister’s face.
“Please Amy...” You swallowed hard, “Please don’t leave me.”
~~~
Needless to say, when Amy woke up speaking French, you thought you were going to have a heart attack. When Meredith explained what was going on though...you quickly understood and calmed down.
A little bit.
It was hard watching Amelia be in pain while she recovered from brain surgery but you always put on a brave face and made sure to be there beside her every step of the way.
It took a while, and since you were with Amelia every day it was hard to see the tiny steps of progress, but you did. It felt like forever, but you knew it wasn’t, before Amelia was finally allowed to be discharged and head home.
“I’ll put the bags in the car first,” Owen said and looked over at you
You smiled and Owen gave you a knowing look before walking out of the room, a few bags in his hand.
“You look like crap,” Amelia joked as you rubbed your bloodshot eyes.
“Right back at you,” You mumbled back but Amelia could tell it didn’t have your usual spunk.
“What’s wrong?” Amelia asked, clearly concerned.
You shook your head, “It’s stupid...”
“Oh come on Y/N,” Amelia said, “It’s me, you know you can tell me anything.”
You sighed and shook your head again but you didn’t stay quiet this time and told Amelia what was bothering you.
“It’s just...especially after Derek,” You felt yourself start to choke up and quickly swallowed hard, “I couldn’t lose you. I was so scared I would lose you too Amelia.”
Amelia’s gaze softened as she realized what you meant.
“Come here...” Amelia whispered and opened her arms so that you could lean into her embrace, “It’s okay...I’m okay now. You’re not going to lose me.”
You nodded and closed your eyes, “I know...but it was just hard...”
“I don’t even know how hard that must have been for you,” Amelia said and you felt her sigh, “But you know...you can’t get rid of me that easily.”
You couldn’t help but shake your head at your sister’s attempts of trying to make a joke.
“I know, you’re like a barnacle,” You went along with Amelia’s attempts.
“Seriously though,” Amelia whispered, “I’m always going to be with you no matter what.”
You nodded, “I know...I love you Amelia.”
“Love you too.”
If You Go Out of This World Today
fanfiction
ao3
The Accident didn’t turn Danny into a half ghost, but instead allowed him to see, hear, and physically interact with the very real ghosts that are now pouring through the portal (Alternative: Danny’s always been clairvoyant, but after the accident he finally sees all of the ghosts he’d grown up talking to) prompt by @sapphireswimming
word count: 3358
yo another prompt hidey hey
Ember had been chasing Johnny and Kitty through the Ghost Zone when it happened. Suddenly she was tripping her way through a natural portal that had spontaneously formed in front of her and she tumbled straight into the human world. Before she could stand back up, the portal had closed already.
Looking around, she could see that she was in a bedroom. The walls were painted blue with stars stuck to the ceiling. There was a night light plugged into the wall and as she looked around her gaze landed on a small boy who was sitting straight up in his bed. He had black hair and blue eyes and he was staring at his closet with wide eyes.
“Hello?” He called. “Is someone there?”
Ember stays quiet, not ready to announce her presence. A few moments later though, a woman walks in through the door.
“Danny, are you alright?”
He points to his closet. “I thought I heard a weird noise. Can you look?”
She nods. She walks over to the closet and opens it, sticking her head inside. Looking back and forth, she calls back out to Danny.
“Nothing in here.”
“No ghosts?” Danny asks, lifting his blanket up to cover the bottom half of his face.
“No ghosts.” She confirms. “We’d know if there were ghosts in the house.”
Ember nearly snorts but holds the sound back.
“Now, it's time for bed.” She walks over to the bed and starts tucking him back in.
“Mommy! Can you sing me a song before I go back to sleep?” He begged.
His mom smiled and sat down on the bed beside him, brushing his hair out of his face. Then she began to sing.
“If you go out of this world today
You’re sure of a big surprise
If you go out of this world today
You’d better go in disguise.”
Ember frowned. That’s not how she remembered this song going.
“For every ghost that ever there was
Will gather there for certain, because
Today’s the day the wretched ghosts have their picnic.”
Wretched ghosts?
“If you go out of this world today
You’d better not go alone
It’s pretty out of the world today
But safer to stay at home.
For every ghost that ever there was
Will gather there for certain, because
Today’s the day the wretched ghosts have their picnic.”
Ember didn’t know what to make of this woman or her parody of this lullaby. Why was it about ghosts? Most people didn’t even believe in ghosts.
“Every wretched ghost, who’s been bad
Is sure of a treat today
There’s lots of wonderful things to do
And wonderful tests to try.”
Ember stared at the woman in horror. Did they study ghosts? Why did they hate ghosts so much?
“Beyond the clouds where nobody sees
They’ll hide and seek as long as they please
Today’s the day the wretched ghosts have their picnic.
Today’s the day the wretched ghosts have their picnic.”
Ember stood frozen to the spot where she stood. Realistically, she knew she should be escaping and trying to find a way back to the ghost zone right now. If this woman managed to find her and capture her, who knows what she’d plan on doing.
But on the other hand, what kind of mother sings about experimenting on ghosts to her kids? What if he’s in danger? The way his mother had sung that last verse had unnerved Ember, and while it seemed to have put the boy to sleep, it still left a sour taste in her mouth.
Looking at the boy in the small bed, her resolve hardened. She’d stay and watch over him. Or at least stay long enough to figure out if he’d be okay.
It was a few days later when Ember first let something slip. Danny was watching cartoons in front of the tv downstairs and she laughed at something that happened in the show. Danny’s head had whipped to the side and looked in her general direction with wide eyes.
“Hello?”
Ember took in a sharp breath. Most humans couldn’t hear or see ghosts. She just happened to find one that could, but at least it didn’t seem like he could see her at all. She shouldn’t start talking to him but…
“Hi.”
His mouth dropped open. “Why can’t I see you?”
“Uh, well. Because I’m a ghost.”
“You’re a ghost?” He gaped at the empty air beside her head. “Mom-!”
“No! Shh sh!” Ember started waving her hands in a “no” motion even though he couldn’t see her. “Don’t tell them! If they found out I was here they’d try to trap me!” She had found the Fenton’s lab two days ago, and while it cemented the idea that this was a dangerous place for a toddler, it also scared the shit out of her.
“Trap you? How can they trap you if you’re a ghost?”
“Your parents are very smart people. They have all sorts of stuff that they’re building in the basement.”
“The basement? What’s in the basement?” He started climbing off the couch.
“Nope, nope! You’re not going down to the basement. It’s too dangerous down there.” Ember stood to block his path even though, again, he couldn’t see her.
He let out a whine. “That’s what mommy and daddy always say. I’m a big boy now! When will I be able to go into the basement?”
Ember shook her head. “Not for a long time I’d hope.”
Danny groaned and climbed back onto the couch, laying face down on it instead of facing the tv to watch the show. “Why can’t I go down there when they’re down there all day?” He asked quietly.
Ember frowned at him sadly and sat down beside his head. “Even big boys like you need to be protected from dangerous things. But! How about we hang out together? We can be buddies, small fry.”
Danny scrambled up into a sitting position excitedly. “Like an imaginary friend? Except for real?”
She chuckled. “Sure. Like an imaginary friend. Let’s go with that.”
Danny cheered. “Come on! Let’s go play superhero in my room!”
He charged up the stairs and she followed slowly after him, chuckling.
QQQQQ
“You’re doing what?” Johnny asked incredulously.
“Staying here.” Ember watched as Danny swung on the swings, his mother tinkering with an invention in her hands as she sat on the bench.
“What’s the fun in that?” Kitty asked. “What’s the point in staying here if no one can see you? How are you going to scare any of them?”
Ember scoffed, her brows drawing down as she looked at them. “I’m not here to scare anyone.”
“Then why are you here?” Johnny asked.
Ember fidgeted where she stood, looking at Danny. “I tripped through a portal into that kids room when I got here. Everything seemed pretty normal until his mom started singing a song about experimenting on ghosts.”
“So what? He’s not a ghost.” Kitty said bluntly.
“No, but what kind of parents sing about torturing something to their kid? I looked around their house and they have a lab full of weapons and a dissection table and everything! I don’t think it matters that he’s not a ghost, that’s not a safe place to be in. Half the time his parents forget to come up and feed them and his older sister has to make something to eat for the two of them.” Ember sighed. “I know what it’s like to come from a shitty home situation. I just want to make sure he doesn’t get hurt.”
Johnny and Kitty shared a sad look. Kitty spoke up. “We get that too, but what about your safety? If they’re ghost hunters they probably pose more of a danger to you than they do to him.”
Ember snorted. “As if. I don’t know how they got to be where they are but they are probably the most air headed scientists ever. They think their tracking devices are locking onto Danny somehow instead of me. I’m sure I’ll be fine.”
“Well, if you end up fading-”
“What’s fading?” Danny asked suddenly.
Johnny yelped as he was interrupted, not noticing the boy approaching them. Ember chuckled.
“We can talk about that later. What are you doing over here, small fry?”
“I heard you talking to someone else. I wanted to come see who it was. It’s also boring playing by myself.” Danny pouted and kicked his foot in the woodchips.
“Well you’re in luck, little dip! I’ve got two great friends here who would love to play with us!”
“Wait-” Johnny said, waving his hands back and forth.
“What do you want to play?” Ember continued, ignoring him.
“Oohh, we can play ice cream man!” Danny said excitedly. He started running towards a plastic counter thing that was built into the playground. “Ice cream! Get your ice cream!” He shouted.
“Why are you dragging us into this?” Johnny asked.
“Loosen up a little bit, he’s just a kid. It’s not like you guys have to stay. Hello Mr. Ice Cream Man!” Embered said cheerily as she walked up to where Danny stood at the counter.
“Hello! What can I get for you today?”
“Hm.” Ember looked above Danny’s head at a pretend menu. “How about a strawberry ice cream cone?”
“Coming right up!” Danny bent over and reappeared a few seconds later with a pile of woodchips that he poured all over the counter. “Order served!”
“Thank you! Wow! Om nom nom, so delicious!” Ember said, pretending to eat her ice cream.
Danny swept the woodchips off of the counter. “Next!”
Johnny rolled his eyes but Kitty pulled him forward. “Hi! Can we get an ice cream sundae for two? It’ll be so romantic.” She fluttered her eyes at Johnny and he made a face at her.
“Coming right up!” Once again, Danny bent over but this time when he dumped the woodchips on the counter, it was an even bigger pile. “Order served!”
Kitty made pretend eating sounds and Ember was about to walk back up to the counter when she heard the voices of a couple of kids nearby.
“Can we have some ice cream?”
Two kids about Danny’s age walked up to him. One had big glasses on his face and the other had her black hair done up in two pigtails. Danny stared at them for a few seconds before responding. “Right! Yes. What flavors would you two like?”
The kid with glasses whispered in the girl’s ear and she approached the counter.
“Mint chocolate chip and chocolate chip cookie dough?”
“Coming right up!” Danny bent over once again and picked up two handfuls of woodchips, placing them on the counter. The girl stared at them for a few seconds.
“Order served!”
She giggled and picked them up, bringing them close to her face. “Mmm, this is the most delicious ice cream I’ve ever had.” She nudged her friend beside her, who was staring sadly at the woodchips.
“Huh? Oh.” He picked up his own pile. “Om nom nom. So good.”
The girl laughed again. “I’m Sam. This is Tucker.” Tucker waved. “Did you want to come play in the sandbox with us?”
He stared at her again, eyes wide, before his face split into a grin. “Sure! What are you guys playing?”
Ember waved goodbye to Johnny and Kitty as they announced their goodbyes. She followed Danny and his new friends across the park to the sandbox.
“We were just going to see how big of a hole we can dig.” Tucker says, a mischievous glint in his eyes. “I think we can get to China.”
Sam rolled her eyes. “We don’t have time for that Tucker. My mom wants me home by four, remember?”
His shoulders slumped. “Oh yeah.”
Ember chuckled at them. Having friends Danny’s age will probably be good for him. She hasn’t seen one kid come over in the couple weeks she’s been staying with him.
“Wait what time is it now?” Danny asked.
He only got two shrugs in return.
“Come on, let’s go talk to my mom. Maybe we can convince her and whoever brought you guys to get us ice cream instead of playing in the sandbox.”
Sam and Tucker’s eyes lit up and they hurried after Danny as he ran to the bench where his mom sat, who had finally put her invention away and was reading a book instead.
“Mom, Mom! What time is it?”
She checked a watch on her wrist. “3:15. We’ll be leaving soon though, so you better finish anything you still want to do.”
Ember silently laughed at the panic that appeared on Danny’s face. “Can we find Sam and Tucker’s parent and get ice cream instead of staying in the park? Please?” He clasped his hands together and started begging, Sam and Tucker following suit.
“Who are-”
Maddie finally looked up at the three kids standing in front of her. “Oh! Why hello there! Danny! You made some friends!”
“Can we pleeeease get some ice cream?”
“Pleease?” Sam and Tucker chorused.
Maddie chuckled. “I don’t see why not. We have to go find your guardian first and ask them if you two can have some though.” She stood up and started packing her book back into her bag and slung it over her shoulder.
The three kids cheered and Sam and Tucker ran their way over to another bench on the other side of the playground.
“Mom! Me and Sam made a new friend! We were wondering if we could all get ice cream together!”
Tucker’s mom looked up and saw Danny standing shyly behind his mom, who waved.
“Hi, I’m Maddie and this is Danny.”
Danny waved.
“Hi! I’m Angela.” She looked back at Sam and Tucker. “You guys made a new friend? I think that’s cause for celebration.”
“We can get ice cream?” Sam asked.
“Yes, we can get ice cream.” Angela said, smiling.
All three kids cheered and started following their moms as they walked out of the park. Ember smiled. While she liked spending time playing with Danny, these were kids his age that he could actually see. She was happy for him.
“Ghosts aren’t real, man.”
“What do you mean?” Danny asked, a furrow in his brow.
Ember looked away from a book she had finally learned how to pick up and turn invisible after years in the human world to see Danny and his friends looking at each other in frustration.
“Ghosts aren’t real. There’s no scientific evidence of them.” Tucker said, looking back at the tv where their game was paused.
“Well what about my parents' work? Their lifelong passion?”
Tucker shrugged. “There’s gotta be some explanation for whatever findings they have. It can’t be explained by ghosts. Have your parents ever seen a ghost?”
“No but not everyone can see ghosts.”
“Huh?”
“It’s called being clairvoyant.” Sam said. “It encompasses different kinds of things but it can apply to seeing the future or seeing ghosts and other things like that.”
“Do you believe me Sam?” Danny asked.
She shrugged. “It’s something I’d like to believe because I think it’s interesting but I can’t, not without solid proof.”
“But I have solid proof!”
“Okay what is it then?” Tucker asked, putting down his controller.
“I can hear ghosts. I’ve had one living with me for half my life. You know, Ember?”
Sam and Tucker shared a look. “You mean your imaginary friend?” Sam asked.
He shot her a look. “No, she’s not my imaginary friend. She’s a ghost that accidentally fell through a portal from the ghost zone and she’s been my friend ever since.”
Tucker took a deep breath. “No offense, dude, but I think you’ve got whatever your parents have that makes them go off their rockers. It’s probably just all in your head.”
Danny bristled. “I’m not crazy.”
Tucker rolled his eyes. “And I’m the pharaoh Duul Aman. Your parents are crazy. Even Jazz believes that and she’s lived her whole life with them too. Just drop it already. We’re not kids anymore.”
Tucker unpaused the game and after a few moments Danny turned back to the screen stiffly and started playing again.
After that Danny started talking to Ember less and less. She’d ask how his day went at school and she’d hear him mumble something about voices in his head and ghosts, but he didn’t respond to her. Which was fine. Teenagers did that. She was his friend but she could very well be another sort of mother figure to him, so it made sense.
One day when she asked him about his homework he finally exploded on her.
“Stop! Just stop talking! I don’t know if you’re a ghost or not but that’s crazy! Everyone at school thinks my parents are crazy so it must be true. I’m crazy. I’ve let myself believe an imaginary friend that I hallucinate about has been real for too long. It’s time to grow up.”
“Danny-” She started.
“No!” He shouted. “You’re not real! I don’t want to talk to you anymore!”
Ember felt her heart drop into her stomach and she floated away from him. He looked around him, listening for her, before he took a deep breath and went back to his homework that he was working on.
QQQQQ
Ember didn’t stick around at Danny’s house as often anymore. She’d go fly around town on her own more and sometimes went back to the ghost zone for a couple days before another portal opened back up. She had just floated through the walls into the living room for the first time in a week when she heard Danny and his friends talking in the lab.
She felt prickles on her skin. Danny was fourteen now. She didn’t need to watch over him as much anymore. He was old enough to watch over himself now. But she had a bad feeling about the lab. His parents had recently finished building their ghost portal but it ended up not working.
She slowly floated down the stairs, apprehensive about being down there with all the weapons again, but just as she hit the bottom step and looked up, she saw a bright flash of green and heard a scream that rattled her to her very core.
Danny was in the portal, screaming and screaming as the portal turned on around him. Sam and Tucker were shouting his name from outside the portal, tears streaming down their faces.
Ember flew across the lab quickly and was about to reach into the portal but the ectoplasm powering it began to burn her skin. She hissed and pulled her arms away.
After a few more agonizing seconds, the swirling of the portal settled into a more gentle rhythm and when Ember reached out, the burning sensation was gone. She was about to reach in to find Danny when someone tumbled out and onto the floor.
Her heart dropped as she took in their appearance. It must’ve been Danny’s ghost. He was an inverted version of his human self, wearing the jumpsuit his parents had just finished for him two weeks ago.
“Danny?”
Sam’s quiet, croaky voice filled the lab. Danny lay on the floor unmoving for a few moments before he groaned and opened his eyes.
“Sam? Tucker? What happened?”
Sam’s bottom lip wobbled and Tucker stared at Danny with wide eyes. “Danny. I think- I think you-”
Tucker was interrupted as a bright flash of white light appeared and lit up the room. It traveled up and down Danny’s body, revealing a human boy.
“Ugh.” Danny groaned. “That did not help my growing migraine. What was that?”
Ember leaned further over him to get a look at the burns on his face when his eyes opened. He looked at Sam and Tucker first, and then his eyes kept traveling and met her own. His eyes widened and a shocked look appeared on his face, one she could feel mirrored on her own, as he looked straight up at her.
He whispered, his voice small and shaky.
“Ember?”
Please talk more about your reboot!
16: If you could change anything in the show, what would you change?
okay so how i would re-do CANON is completely different from how i would talk abt a reboot so im gonna touch on a couple things in both contexts! the reason for the difference is canon rewrites imply i can go back in time and introduce dp fresh and new, before anyone knows what it is; but for a reboot, id be working with an audience that has a better understanding of the source material, so i dont need to spend as much time explaining, but i also need to keep everything recognizable
Valerie
REWRITE: i would def make it more danny's fault that her dad lost his job, like danny was intentionally being reckless and shattered some security stuff, and he has a whole mini lesson about learning to not just run in guns blazing. i would probably remove the dating stuff with her and danny (and tuckers crush) too, I think them wanting to be good friends is good enough for freshman year
REBOOT: the fandom already knows valerie exists, so i would actually skip the whole shades-of-gray introductory episode and have her be present as the huntress from day 1-- probably even before danny got his powers. cujo is also HER dog, and her backstory-- we'd find out in like, season 1, that a natural ghost portal (maybe one wulf opened) ripped open on her dog and killed him, and since then shes had a vendetta against ghosts cause of how reckless they are and their disregard for life-- of course, cujo isnt actually dead. cujo is a halfa. a puby halfa. anyway instead of a hoverboard she actually rides cujo around cause he can fly and its big and epic. valerie has BEEN amity parks ghost-eradicating superhero for at least a year (tho shes been in the shadows abt it) and her hatred towards danny actually just becomes really petty, like them flying next to each other chasing skulker just going "I got this. no I got this. no I got this" and they just get in each others' way and its a mutual grudge.
BOTH: i am NOT keeping in vlad giving her the suit to watch danny under any circumstances. it was only utilized half assedly in canon (when vlad couldve just had an invisible duplicate watching him instead) anyway, and I dont have any reason to keep it in a reboot either. instead i want her tech to be a combination of half-stolen and half-gerryrigged stuff and she slowly slowly learns how to build her own.
I also dont want anyone knowing her secret identity, except maybe her dad, and sam or tucker. i think it works better if danny isnt privy to this magic info
Freakshow
REWRITE: i would honestly just remove him. the episodes hes in arent particularly interesting, theyre just generic "we need a plot about x" filler and he's not compelling enough a character (at least in writing) to carry a better plot that another antagonist couldnt. i'm serious
REBOOT: unfortunately in a reboot he's gonna have to pop up somewhere or else ppl will be like "where IS HE" so I'm going to stick with running some kind of ghost circus, maybe a few occult things, but cut out a lot of the spooky magical knowledge and mcguffin stuff. maybe i could make him like, someone from vlad/jack/maddies college who always felt pushed around by them and so he has a vendetta? and theyd be the only reason he even learned abt ghosts in the first place. idk in either way I want to force him into being irredeemable but also include LYDIA (the tattoo girl ghost) way more-- I want to give her an arc that ends in her tossing freakshow aside and running off to be a ghost vigilante.
BOTH: dear god the infinity gauntlet is stupid that needs to GO AWAY. especially for the reboot cause it would exist in a post-mcu world and way too many people would complain about it
Vlad
REWRITE: amp him up to a far more sinister and villainous character. the crushing on maddie isnt enough, I want to show him on-screen performing experiments on ghosts and himself, dismissing everyone else cause he thinks hes smarter than them. i want him to be actively sabotaging the fentons at every turn. i would also clarify that he doesnt actually want danny as a son, but as a trophy-- a line where danny says something along the lines of "you don't want a son. you want a slave". i want to make him a character who wants to destroy the entire planet and put it in the ghost zone so he can be the true ghost king and i want to make this all evident from day one. if i'm writing a series villain you can bet i'm going to write a GOOD one. less petty drama here and more actual stakes.
REBOOT: it seems silly but sense with reboot we have the benefit of hindsight and recognizing that vlad wasn't a big series villain, theres no way i'd actually go back and write him to be such. for starters, of course, theres the fact that anything he does would really be an exaggerated part of the original, and it would bore an audience to see the same story again-- theres also the fact that it doesnt seem right to take a character who was treated as a joke half the time and suddenly make them big and important. no, instead for my reboot i want to lean into the petty gay uncle vibe. he had a crush on jack and now just casually insults him. he moves mansions every now and again by just haunting the family who lives in the one he wants, and taking over-- i mean, who is gonna believe that an actual ghost haunted you. he dislikes danny not because he has some concept of 'evil' and 'good' but bc danny is just too damn active. of course he actually does care about danny and his safety deep down, it's just on the surface they have very conflicting motivations-- not to mention that danny has been raised on legends from his parents of the villainous Wisconsin Ghost, who has to be stopped at all costs.
BOTH: i want jack and maddie to KNOW he's a half ghost and to actively be hunting him down for it, maybe bc they think hes possessed, or been a ghost tricking them this whole time, or the victim of a tragic lab accident who needs to be put to rest, etc. whatever the case it will give vlad actual tangible reason to despise them and genuinely suspect they dont have dannys best interests at heart. i think it would be neat if vlad was cynical and every time danny hit him with the "I'll expose us both. at least theyll still love ME" vlad could be like in the back of his head "oh god theyre going to kill this child"
Dani
REWRITE: cut her out. we don't need her character at all. maybe replace her with a more ominous shadow duplicate / clone that actually looks like danny himself and doesnt really have a name? you could probably combine her and dark dans characters for their arcs
REBOOT: instead of a clone from vlad, she's a guys in white creation using some of dannys dna after he was captured (and vlad broke him out bc he was like "ugh i guess i have to save this child")
BOTH: vlad actually cares abt her (duh), shes nonbinary (double duh), she gets the funny dissolve into goo powers
i had more i thought i was gonna write but this post is already very long and also im running out of coherency for this LUL
ok I understand the opinion that DmC devil may cry is not the "Devil May Cry" game or it shouldn't have happened however
as someone who enjoys the reb00t title, to me it also spawns a potential that I feel has never been touched on or thought of by the fans, at least so far as I can see
To me the reason why i think not a lot of people want the reboot is because to them from what I observed is that there's a specific "way" a Devil May Cry game should be, and of course it's main protagonist's character.
Honestly, however, from the five installments that came out, I feel like they couldn't be further from the other apart from the main themes of humanity and being a cool action superhero, and bombastic cutscenes and some fanservice
It could be because of the time/years apart DMC5 is compared to when even the reb00t was, while the first 4 games were during the 2000s and had crossed two platform generations without a hitch in that era.
But anyway I feel like I'm almost off the tangent because my main point is that:
YES! We can make multiple different Devil May Crys.... Or Cries..... Or Cry volumes......
My point is this
Multiverse.
To me I think Devil May Cry, if the potential is unlocked, this franchise could be treated like Final Fantasy.
Think about it: each of the main installments are vastly different, apart from the main theme of the apocalyptic narrative, rpg elements that are made fresh or updated and recurring characters that run alongside new ones.
I just disagree that something could just be made “one” way. I don’t remember who said it but the whole quote “There’s no such thing as a bad idea, only badly executed ones.” ~~by ???
The reb00t unfortunately got the bad end because, I think these days, it’s quite obvious that NT and the devs of Capcom weren’t able to actually do the version they had envisioned because of the backlash.
But that isn’t the reason to not see anymore potential a cheesy, comfort zone power fantasy action game franchise can still reach.
Imagine this scenario:
Kyrie is a demon huntress in her universe, juggling her humanitarian job along with exorcising demons or having to actually fight them (and seriously for a game about humanity, there's not a lot of human representation *ahem LADY *AHEM!!!)!!
In another, the twins are together and co-own the DMC office and drive each other up the wall, but the narrative also depicts their everyday life and struggles of leading double lives.
In another, maybe it's 1940 WWII and we see the Order of the Sword as some neutral paragon of the era who only hunts demons and saves people. But underneath is a shady subset of people who are actually doing unethical experimentations and is led by none other than their "pope" dude!!
And Lucia! Like even just supplementary titles, she doesn't have to have her own title via a different universe, make Lucia a lead playable for chrissake!
And yes, the "reboot" title, which I think from my proposal here isn't a reboot anymore but more like its own universe, much like the rest of the ones I've suggested, deserves its existence and to explore even more bombastic, out-there ideas! And taking a half-assed leaf of page from my fanfic, I want to explore Dante's thoughts on his responsibility and actually buckling from the weight of it! I want Kat's journey to shine as well and show her stuff, expand on the lore of how magic done by humans are made! I want "reboot" versions of characters from the other installments and have a fresh new spin on them and go ape shit! And especially Lady!! Boy, DMC3 Lady is the best and it's non-repeatable, but I want to explore in-depth her relationship with her parents, how she got into her weaponry and how ordinary her life must be before her father murdered her mother! And I wanna see Vergil the oily bastard unleash his most cruel potential! Have him slice a demon's head off because he's racist against Nephilim and Vergil makes an example out of his corpse (and if you know that's from Kill Bill more power to you)
Like dude, how epic would it be for Devil May Cry to expand?? They have ALL the tropes, the characters, the mythology that they can play up even more!! Why are we so scared of just having a fun, edgy and fresh take on a franchise that for some reason had no hope in the eyes of Capcom's executives?? It took Itsuno-san to take over at last minute to make something out of the mess from DMC2 and propelled DMC3 to the classic it is today! It took almost him having to quit because the higher-ups, in my opinion, just don't know the audience, or worse their own creative developers!
“...I was actually in LA and it was April 1st...it was April Fools Day and...I was on set working on something, and then, and then this - this unknown number called me...I kept shooting and then, and then an hour or two later, I finally looked at my voicemail and I saw there was a voicemail there...I clicked on it and it was Kevin...he was like: “Hey Sebastian, we were trying to reach you. Just wanted to let you know we’d love, you know, we’d love to do this with you, we’d love you to play James Bucky Barnes...”...it was a really crazy day - it was a really, really crazy day...it was a really nice call.”
“...I knew going into it, you know, that it was gonna be a show that was gonna really double down on the relationship with Anthony and the dynamic that we sort of started to establish...and a different sort of path for this character than we’ve seen so far, and I just - I just to get there in an, in an organic way that felt earned...it wasn’t, to me, a journey that we could just immediately *snaps fingers* overnight just get him to be all all free and open and cracking jokes...the humour about Bucky came out of this, you know like - he’s like an old guy trapped in a world that’s moving very fast...and with Anthony too, they just really were an odd couple...but it was nice to get him to that place for sure...”
“...When I signed on for the role...Marvel was very new...nobody was saying like, “By the way, for the next ten years of your life, you’re gonna just be doing it.”..it was just sort of like “Hey, this is an interesting character that’s going - that’s the path, and wouldn’t it be great if maybe we get to do that? But anyway, we gotta start here, so it’s a day at a time.””
“...we just sort of clicked and kind of spent time together, and then we had done the press tour for The Winter Soldier movie - spent a lot of time together - and so, it just kind of evolved. I, I, I mean that scene was written as is - and we got in the car and we said the lines as they were written on the page, and then I guess the rest is what came out of - (laughs) his, his take on it and my take on it...”
“...we’re very different I think as people in a lot of ways, like, but like, but like, we want the same things and...we approach things the same way and we care the same...we are odd in, in a lot of ways...there’s a natural combustion that comes from that, because - and I play into it, and he plays into it and we have a lot of fun...I remember like being on that press tour with him and going: ‘Oh my God, like, I gotta hang on - I’m on a rollercoaster with this fucking lunatic...’...and then I got better at it and I was like, ‘Okay, like, we’re gonna have fun...’...he broke me out of my shell in a lot of ways, you know, made me a lot more comfortable in, in I guess taking things not so seriously all the time...”
“...I’m just happy that the relationship is embraced, and it should be embraced in whatever way, fashion, in any way that people decide that they want it to be. That’s what - that’s what I love about movies, and, and tv shows and the theatre and this - this form of expression, right - is that, that, that you can have; you know, someone can see the same movie or the same thing as you and have an entirely different experience, and find something within themselves that’s true and honest and relatable. I think, you know, my goal has always been to, to, to do, to, you know with this role, with that relationship, with anything I’ve approached, to, to just try and find - be as honest as I possibly can- and, and then the rest is not up to me...I don’t strive to put some, you know, mark on, on that, it isn’t my mark - I’m just the actor, the; I’m not the writer, you know, I - I’m not - and I’m certainly not the creator here, you know - I’m sort of the messenger, if you will...I’ve always approached that relationship as, as being very close and, and one of family, you know - that was my take to it, you know, but - and, and those characters are very interlinked because they are the only thing they have to remind them of a past that no longer exists...these guys are actually experiencing something extremely traumatic - if you’re actually looking at the truth of their experience...you’re talking about two people that are like entirely ripped from the world, thrown into another and are just doing their best to make the right decisions - and all they have is each other; to look to each other and that journey is what it is, you know, but is it love? For sure it’s love - however you want to define that love is up to you...”
“...you should be asking the fans, and you know, everyone's got different interpretations; well, let them have it.”
“...when the job is over, like, I’m out...I don’t care how you view it, like, it’s yours; it belongs to you now...I don’t actually spend time like, thinking like, you know, ‘What - what, how’s it gonna be taken?’ or whatever, because I have no control over that...let it be what it is, you know, and let it, let it be - let it be all these things...the magic of it to me is that it can be anything you want it to be...let’s live it - let it live as it will and how you want it...”
“...I don’t understand why like people are so obsessed with like, spoiling things now...it used to be fun when you didn’t know what was gonna happen...I still believe in that beauty of the - of the mystery of, of something, you know, and, and, and, and sometimes it’s the emotional reaction to it rather than the, the you know, the analytical, like, analysis of it that’s more impactful.”
“...I remember I sent that photo to Craig - Gillespie, our director, months ago, when - after I found out about the role...I was like; ’This is what we’re heading into’, and - and it just sort of stuck...it’s such a wild picture...we were doing the screen test and...we just did it and, and then, suddenly that was the picture that was (laughs) out there.”
“...this is what’s required, and that’s what you do...the goal is always to, you know, approach everything as honest as possible...as actors, yeah, you’ve gotta, you’ve gotta, I don’t know, you gotta keep being scared and afraid of things; you gotta keep doing things that are not - you know, that are gonna take you out of your comfort zone and sort of, you know, push you further...that’s sort of what I’m trying to do, I guess; that’s kind of what I gravitate to more and more, especially as I get older...you’re always learning, you’re always trying to - you’re always kind of a detective of life and of characters and people.., it becomes bigger than just like you and, you know, what you look like and stuff....my favourite actors that I always see, you know, like are just always doing very kind of scary things; they’re always just challenging and pushing themselves...it’s much better to be scared than to sort of just know what you’re getting into day after day...”
“...it was freeing to, to like, it was nice because I was walking around in these hoodies and like, kind of like hats...I was like paranoid of being, you know, I couldn’t even, like, even do these interviews, like just paranoid of being seen in this thing, and I was like: ‘God I finally hope that they’re gonna finally release something that, that we can be like: ‘’Okay, now you see what - what this is looking; you know, what we look like so we can keep - keep going with out lives’, you know, but, but yeah, it was nice to see the reception, for sure.”
“...as long as they’ll keep calling, I’m there...I’m just like going for the ride, you know?”
“...you get to go and play a character for such a long period of time...it’s like gaining a family member...like a brother or something, you know, in this case like for me, because you get to see this character again and again, and then you’re always like growing up as - and they’re sort of growing up with you...”
“...it’s taxing...it’s part of like staying in shape I guess for these things...something that looks very effortless and cool probably took about a month of work - it’s never like you see it...”
“...on the FIRST day, we, we shot episode 5 at the very beginning of the shoot, and that’s the boat, you know when - when I go and I help him on the boat, and day 1, the first day on set, I’m like jumping off this dock onto the boat to help him, and I just landed and twisted my ankle so badly that I thought it was broken, like, I actually couldn’t walk on it...that took about a week and a half to two weeks of, of sort of like, masking this limp that I had...towards Christmas, I ended up breaking my toe, like the little toe...episode 3 has this whole sequence where I’m, you know, in Madripoor, with Daniel Bruhl and, and Mackie...I’m like pretending to be the Winter Soldier...I had to do that whole action sequence, and, my toe - you can’t do anything with a broken toe...I did that whole thing with a broken toe and I was dying. And of course, the entire time, you know, keeping the best stoic looking face ever.”
“...how it happened was as classically human as it all comes...I’m going to pee in the middle of the night...on my way back, of course I’m just like closer to the wall, you know, looking for the bed, basically almost there and just ram it right into the corner of the wall, And I’m like ‘Oh my God’ and of course too tired to even realise that; I’m like ‘Ah that’s gonna be fine tomorrow’ - and the next day I woke up and I couldn’t walk. So that’s how that happened - not a cool superhero way to do it...”
“...I would basically like, run upstairs and then like, two people would help me out of this boot and then I’d just take my foot and just put it in - in a bucket of ice basically and just ice it the entire time until they were setting up the next shot, and then quickly take it out, put the boot back on, go out there, kick someone through a - the wooden table and then, and then, you know, repeat the cycle...”
“...I might have used the other foot, I can’t remember...it was on my left foot, which is my actually my stronger foot; like I’m more of a leftie when it comes to, I guess, legs and kicks...people have gone through a lot worse, you know, so it’s, it’s like not something to cry about; you just cry later when you’re alone.” (laughs)
“...you end up in that thing of like “Really, like why?” Like, it, it just becomes that - it just becomes that sort of like, “Why is this happening?” kind of thing...”
“...The only person I told was my good friend and stunt man John Nania - like, I - that’s - that’s who I told. I said to him, like in between, I was like: “Dude, just so you know, like, I can barely walk.” And like, he was like, “Just keep going, don’t worry about it.” I’m like: “I’m not telling anybody because they’re gonna freak out and they’re gonna take me out of the - the whole sequence, and then you’re never gonna think it’s me.” But they let me do, they - they actually let, let me do quite a bit which was really nice...it’s long hours, and, and, and it’s true - there’s a lot of preparation...you just have to kind of laugh about it a little bit, you have to find the humour in it...things don’t always go as planned and, and sometimes like there’s like weird godsends with that...”
“...Wyatt Russell is such a good actor...he’s maybe one of the best human beings I’ve ever met. I mean, I just, honestly like, he became a friend and, and I just champion him...he took this character and to me it’s just like one of the most interesting performances that I feel like I’ve seen...he would sort of take him in all these different places, and like - so in that sequence, it really felt earned, you know, that like John Walker was finally gonna get it, you know, and, and he - and he was really gonna be out of his element and, and way out of his field, and, and that we were gonna get to enjoy that happening...”
“...it worked like, like a magic trick...we had this crazy arm that was beautifully constructed...I sort of wrapped mine around and, and they were like, ‘Yeah, you just take it and you know, like, you just put it in there’...I actually had my arm like, in the arm...I took the prop arm and just put it and then kind of twisted and just dropped it and then just kind of pulled mine back around...it was really much more sort of a Texas switch than anything...in the comic books actually, he does, he - he can take his arm out and just, you know, he sometimes he tosses it out like a shield and it comes back, and like attaches like immediately right back into place...”
“...I think honestly about five months later I almost had the same thing happen to the other foot. And I was like ‘No’...it lasts - it lasts for a while...I had that over Christmas, New Year’s...I think it like a good was a good six weeks where I was still feeling that little toe, and I’m like ‘Damn, man - can’t do anything.’”
Word count: 5200+ I KNOW!! It’s the single longest piece of writing I’ve ever written.
Author’s note: I’m actually really proud of this fic so please reblog and let me know what you thought of it! Here’s my masterlist for more content! I wrote a sequel to this fic too!
One
That’s how old she was when her father left. Her mother knew that he was never going to stay, but that didn’t stop her from breaking down every night for 3 months when she thought her beloved daughter had fallen asleep, when instead she lay awake, wondering what could have happened to make her mother hide her sadness every day, only letting her walls come down when she thought nobody was watching.
She didn’t understand much beyond that, just knowing that her dear old dad had left for a pack of cigarettes and milk, but left behind only a stack of legal papers on the counter while her mother had gone off to work, desperate to give her little girl the best life she could.
Two
The number of people in her family. She and her mom, her mom and her. It was just the two of them, or at least that’s what her mother told her every time she asked. She was fine with that, she loved her mother with all her little heart. She didn’t need anybody else.
Her mom had found a job in Providence, a job that could support both of them, and an apartment that had a reasonable rent. She was scared at first, moving to a “big city”, but her mom assured her that it was a kingdom, and she was the princess.
Three
That was the number of bracelets she had gotten for her fifth birthday. She and her mom had been walking downtown, running some errands, when they walked past a jewelry store and saw the set of three bracelets in the store window.
She had asked her mom if she could have them, even resorting to using her best puppy dog eyes in an attempt to persuade her.
Her mom had told her that they were too expensive, and they didn’t have enough money to buy them. She was disappointed, sulking the rest of the way home.
3 weeks later, her mom returned to the jewelry store, spending almost a month's worth of her salary to buy that special set of bracelets for her daughter. She was beyond excited when she woke up on her birthday and saw that bright pink box next to her bed.
She started showing off those prized possessions of hers to all her friends at school. One was gold with a diamond charm, the other was silver with a ruby charm. The last was bronze with a deep sapphire charm. The bronze one was her favourite, even after Derek Reagan said it was ugly. She told Derek that he was ugly.
Four
That was the grade she was in when she met him.
It was a usual Monday, she was rushing through some unfinished homework when Mr Kingston, her teacher entered, accompanied by a boy who looked just a little taller than her.
Turns out it was a new student, transferring from another school that had just closed down. He was wearing a blue button-down, a big difference from the rest of the boys in her class whose t-shirts were either dinosaurs, or cars, or superheroes. He introduced himself as Ethan Jonah Ramsey while the rest of the class stared blankly at him, before returning to their own friends. Mr Kingston assigned him to the seat next to her.
“Hi, Eefen Jonah!” She waved excitedly at him as he sat down next to her.
“My name is Ethan, Jonah is my middle name,” he corrected.
She made a small ‘o’ with her mouth, thinking for a short while before responding, “I prefer Eef,” she smiled, making him blush slightly.
She took a container out of her bag, opening it to reveal large apple slices. She took one in each hand, careful not to let them slip as she turned back towards him, offering the slice in her left hand.
He slowly took one and smiled, “thanks,” he said when he noticed the set of sparkly jewelry on her wrist, “I like your bracelets.”
Five
That’s how many people were in her friend group by middle school.
First, there was Jackie Varma. She thought Jackie was a little mean when she first met her, she always picked fights with everyone. But she soon learned that she was only mean to people she didn’t like, and she even called Derek stupid when he was mean to her. She asked Jackie if she wanted to have lunch with her after that.
Next was Sienna Trinh. She was nice to everyone, and her first friend at school. She always shared her food, usually sweet treats, with everyone in class, even when Jackie was convinced they were poisonous, she never stopped radiating her positivity.
Bryce Lahela was a flirt. And rightfully so, as every girl in her class had a crush on him. Every girl except her. Bryce was convinced he knew the reason why, and voiced his opinion every chance he got, “She doesn’t have a crush on me because she’s in love with Ramsey, that’s the only reason.”
She would always blush when he said that, which was often seeing how he and Jackie bickered daily about it. Yes, she and Ethan had been best friends since fourth grade. Yet that was all they were. Best friends, never venturing out of that sacred zone.
And then there was Ramsey himself. He had gotten tall, very tall. He was easily the tallest of the group, while she was one of the shortest, barely taller than Sienna. He was a bit gangly and awkward, sometimes very quiet as well, but he was her best friend.
Six
That was the day of the month Ethan was born.
He was turning fifteen, and begged his dad for money instead of his usual books. His dad thought it was strange, as reading had quickly become one of his favorite pastimes, but waved it off as typical teenager behaviour.
A couple days before, she had lost her treasured bracelets. She had taken them off during art class, careful not to spill paint and ruined her favourite set of jewelry. She had rushed off after class because she wanted to get the cafeteria pizza while it was still fresh and hot for all her friends, and accidentally left the bracelets behind. When she came back to get them after lunch, however, they were gone. She cried for the first time in what felt like forever.
Ethan’s dad had done what he had asked of him, giving him cash for his birthday. Upon receiving his present, he rushed up to his room and took his box of savings out from the top of his closet, almost falling off the chair he was climbing to get them.
He hurriedly counted up all his money, adding to the amount he had been saving, ecstatic when he realised he had a little more than what he needed. He quickly ran out, wallet in hand, barely able to tell his dad that he was going out as he sprinted out the front door.
He finally made it to the jewelry store that, after much research, he knew carried the same set of bracelets as the ones his best friend had lost. The attendant asked what a young man like himself was doing buying such an expensive set of jewelry, teasing about if using all his hard-earned cash by doing extra chores was really worth it for a girl.
He smiled widely, heart racing from the sprint over, but nodded rapidly, forking over the money he had planned to use to buy a new set of books. When he got home, he put the shiny new bracelets in a box, doing his best to wrap them in bright red wrapping paper, her favourite colour.
At school the next day, he got in early and slipped the box into her desk drawer before she arrived.
“Eef,” that’s what she called him when something big was happening, “you won’t believe what I found!” she squealed to him after class.
She told him all about the bracelets she found at her desk, while he smiled and nodded, telling her he was happy for her. Jackie made eye contact with him and gave him a knowing look, his eyes darting around the room when he realised, but she didn’t say a word about it after that.
Seven
The number of med schools she applied to. They all applied to med schools.
She applied to Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Princeton, Brown, NYU, and Johns Hopkins.
She was accepted to all of them, which was more than impressive. Her mother had never been prouder of her.
Ethan never told her, but he applied to the same schools as her, all seven. He got into all of them except Harvard, so hoped to every powerful being up beyond the night sky that she wouldn’t accept their invitation. He wasn’t ready to lose her, not yet, maybe not ever.
After spending countless coffee-fueled nights sorting through and weighing the pros and cons of each school, she finally decided on Johns Hopkins. Ethan did too, after he determined that they had the best professors there. At least, that’s what he told her when she asked how he decided.
Sienna, one of her closer friends in the group, was her shoulder to cry on if Ethan wasn’t around, which was rare but had happened a couple times throughout the years. Sienna decided to go to Princeton, along with her boyfriend, Wayne, or was it Dwayne? Nobody really knew as he never bothered to show up most of the time when they reluctantly invited him per Sienna’s request.
The rest of their friend group split up, each going to a different med school. They made a pact one drunken night the summer before they all headed out to med schools all across the country.
They promised to meet up every chance they could, even if it meant driving in the middle of the night through storm and snow. Jackie insisted it was way too cheesy when Sienna half sobbed, half stated it while they sat on Bryce’s rooftop, bottles of alcohol and snacks surrounding them, but in the end, the tears made Jackie agree.
Ethan helped her pack for college, something she assured him she could easily do herself but he insisted anyway. He helped move her things into her dorm, something he hadn’t yet done for himself but he didn’t care. They met her roommate, Grace Young, who upon first seeing them, mistakenly assumed they were dating. She quickly corrected Grace, properly introducing Ethan as her best friend.
Eight
That’s the number of years it took for Ethan to realise he was in love with her.
Why it had taken him so long, he didn’t have a single clue. He should’ve realised it sooner, but now he couldn’t not see it. Ethan was completely sure he was mind-blowingly in love with her.
Why hadn’t he noticed the first day he met her, when she immediately shared her apple slices with him, making him feel welcome and accepted unlike most of the class. Sure, he had figured out long ago that she was beautiful, but he never thought it was love.
Why hadn’t he noticed it all through middle school, when Bryce mercilessly teased the both of them about it. “Damn,” he thought, “I hate it when Bryce is right.”
And why had he not realised it in high school, when he spent all his savings he earned over countless summers to replace the bracelets that she lost? When instead of bullying her, Derek Reagan started flirting with her, which made Ethan so angry when he saw it happen, but ecstatic when she turned him down in front of the whole school, citing all the times he had bullied and picked on her. Friends don’t do that for each other. But she was more than just a friend, wasn’t she?
Ethan should’ve known when he followed her 370 miles away from their hometown just to be at the same med school as her. Sure, it was a great school, but that wasn’t the reason he was there. He was there for her. You don’t just do that for a friend you like or even have a crush on. No, he loved her.
It was quite ridiculous, really. How had she gotten him wrapped around her finger, and without him even realising for so many years? Ethan knew he was helpless to her charms, he would do anything she wanted him to do, he would’ve followed her to the ends of the earth if she had asked.
But did she know? That was the thought that circled around his head during sleepless nights as he tossed and turned in his bed. Did she know how weak she made him? How helpless he was when it came to anything that had to do with her?
He quickly decided that she couldn’t have known. She wouldn’t have let him spend all his birthday money and savings on her, let him follow her to med school, let him torture himself all these years if she knew it was all for her.
Nine
That’s how many apartment listings she had to choose from.
She sat in the coffee shop near the hospital reading over the listings. Now that they had started their residency, Grace had been matched with another hospital and moved in with fellow interns there.
This one was too expensive, that one would be too loud. She had no idea which one to choose. And to add to her troubles, she had no roommate. There was no way she could find a reasonable place in downtown Boston without a roommate, it was impossible.
That’s when Ethan walked through the door, his hair combed to perfection as usual.
“Ethan, thank god you’re here. Come help me pick out an apartment,” she pleaded, showing him pictures of all the listings.
He shrugged his jacket off as he sat down next to her, inhaling the comforting scent of hers he had grown to love over all these years that wafted through the air.
“This one looks nice,” he pointed to one of the listings, “barely a block away from the hospital, great lighting, tons of restaurants around, and the rent would be affordable for two people.”
“I know, it’s perfect but I can’t afford it,” Ethan frowned and looked up at her in confusion.
She let out a defeated sigh, “I haven’t found a roommate yet, and there’s no way I can afford that place all on my own,” she admitted and turned back to the other listings in search of a cheaper place, the frown still evident on her face.
“I’ll be your roommate,” he mentally cursed himself the second those words escaped from his mouth. He had just offered to be roommates with his best friend that he just happened to be hopelessly in love with. What could possibly go wrong?
His regrets immediately ceased to exist when her face lit up, full of delight. She threw her arms around him gratefully, hugging him as tightly as she could, and he knew every single moment would be worth it for her, “thank you so much, Eef!”
Ten
That’s the number of times he had tried to tell her.
The first time was when she came home after a bad day. It was pouring rain outside, and she had walked in completely drenched and in a mess of tears. After many attempts on Ethan’s part to try to get her to tell him what was wrong, he eventually gave up and stuck to comforting her instead. As she cried, soaking his clothes with not only her tears but the rain her clothes and hair had absorbed on the way in, he wanted nothing more than to tell her how much he loved her.
Then there was the time she convinced him to bake a cake together on their day off. He had accidentally gotten cake batter on her nose, and she laughed as she smeared some of it across his face, which resulted in a war using their leftover ingredients still on the counter. He never thought she was more beautiful than she was right there, and was tempted to risk it all. But he never did.
The third time was over the phone, he had gone home but she was still at Edenbrook, filling in patient charts when he received a call from her.
“Hey, Ethan.”
“Hey, what’s the call for?”
Her voice was momentarily shaky on the other end, it made his heart rate go up significantly, “I just wanted to tell you...hi,” was what she said after a long pause.
“You called just to say hi?” he laughed.
“Yeah. I gotta go now, bye,” she hung up before he had a chance to respond.
The next time was when they watched a movie. “Maybe a romantic movie would help,” he thought to himself as he loaded up The Fault In Our Stars. He was wrong. The movie only made her cry again, and he couldn’t bring himself to tell her then.
The next time, he was determined to finally do it. He stopped by the florist on the way home, picking up a bouquet of her favourite flowers, bougainvilleas. He even rehearsed the exact words he was going to say when he professed his love to her while walking back. But he opened the door only to be met with her wearing a stunning blue sundress that left him was speechless. Only she had that effect on him.
The sixth time was in the middle of the night, around 1 am. Ethan couldn’t sleep, his head was clouded with thoughts of her and her alone. He convinced himself he was going to tell her. Yes, he was going to march into her room and tell her. He got up to tell her, but instead heard her throwing up when he approached the door. He spent the rest of the night comforting her and making sure she was okay.
Then he decided he couldn’t do it himself. He called up Sienna, who had long since figured out who Ethan was in love with. Sienna actually laughed when he had asked her to tell her on his behalf. She thought it was a joke. When she realised he was being serious, her lighthearted behavior dissolved, instead, she firmly told him that he had to do it himself, and promptly hung up the phone.
Eighth time’s the charm, right? Wrong. He thought of writing a letter, “it’s easier this way,” he thought. All he had to do was write his feelings down on a piece of paper and hand her the letter, easy. He then realised that it was far too impersonal. He knew her, hell, he spent more than half his life with her. And that’s why he knew that if he ever did it, she’d want to hear it in person from him directly.
Then he tried to tell her as they walked back from Edenbrook after a long shift. It was a typical Boston day, and Ethan decided there was no time like the present to tell her. He had every intention to tell her, he really did. But she received an important phone call that she needed to take just as he was about to open his mouth.
Finally, he decided that he had had enough. He wasn’t going to let anything come between his plans to tell her the truth for a second longer than he needed to. He planned a delightful picnic for the both of them. They headed to a nearby park that she loved on a cool but sunny day, it was a perfect day. And that was what stopped him from telling her this time.
They were having so much fun, what if by telling her the truth, he ruined the day. What if he ruined their entire friendship, years worth of time spent together wasted and down the drain all because he was so selfish? What if she didn’t reciprocate his feelings, and that was the last good memory of her that he had? He gave up trying to tell her after that.
Eleven
That’s how many times she tried to tell him.
The first time was immediately after she found out. It was a shocking discovery, and she was lost as to what to do with the new information. It didn’t exactly help that it had been an awful day. On her way back to the apartment, it started to rain heavily. A terrible end to a terrible day, really. When she finally made it indoors, she instantly fell into his arms. She knew she could’ve told him there, but she didn’t.
She decided that they needed to be doing something more fun and lighthearted, so she suggested baking, and was surprised when he actually agreed. But seeing him there, covered in cake batter, who knows how much flour, and grinning at her, she wanted to keep this memory.
After feeling guilty for not telling him that day, she called him while taking a break from charts.
“Hey, Ethan,” she said, building herself up to finally tell him.
“Hey, what’s the call for?”
Her voice quivered, the nerves building up, “I just wanted to tell you,” she decided it was too much, she’d tell him another time, “...hi.”
‘You called just to say hi?” she heard his laugh on the other end.
She closed her eyes tightly, embarrassed, “yeah. I gotta go now, bye,” she hung up as quickly as she could.
The next time she tried to tell him was during movie night, but the bastard just had to pick The Fault In Our Stars. Since when did Ethan even start voluntarily watching romantic movies anyway? And he couldn’t have picked any other movie. She spent a good part of the rest of the night cursing the tears that choked back all the words she wanted to say.
Then she was going to tell him when he got back to the apartment. She spent so long in the bathroom practicing what she was going to say to him in the mirror. Time and time again, pacing in her favourite blue sundress to calm her nerves as she recited the words back to herself. But then he showed up with a bouquet of her favorite flowers. He had always been so sweet like that to her. She really didn’t deserve him, and she hated herself for not telling her then.
At 1 in the morning, she felt sick to her stomach, and rushed into her bathroom. She threw up all of her dinner from hours before, no doubt looking awful while doing so. Then Ethan showed up and spent the entire night comforting her. She knew she could’ve ended her own torture right then and there, and she was planning to. Up until she fell asleep on his shoulder.
Maybe she didn’t have to be the one to tell him? And so she drove an hour back to Providence to see her mom, seeking advice. There must’ve been a better way to tell him, a way that wouldn’t be putting her through so much agony. Her mom only hugged her tightly. She told her that she was the only one who could make the decision to tell him and wished her the best of luck.
She sat at her desk and attempted to write a letter, but how could you write someone a letter to tell them about such a subject? There was no way words on a piece of paper could explain how she felt. It wasn’t fair to Ethan, it had to be done in person.
And then there was the time they were walking back home from the hospital. She would’ve told him there, she should’ve told him there, but she didn’t. Instead, she received a phone call. She knew exactly what the call would be about even before she tapped the ‘answer’ icon.
The next was the time he set up a picnic for the both of them. It was a perfect day, it was the perfect time to tell him, but that was the moment she realised she loved him. She just wasn’t willing to stain the moment she realised she loved her best friend with her horrible news.
Finally, there was the time she actually told him the truth. It was cold, but she asked him to go up to the rooftop with her. He agreed, and they made their way up to the empty rooftop garden. They stood in silence as they looked out at the city around them, the city lights glittering like diamonds in the dark, or shooting stars in the night sky. Ethan tried to tell her first.
“I love—”
“Ethan, I’m dying.”
Twelve
That’s how many months are in a year. That’s how many inches are in a foot. That’s how many signs there are in the zodiac. That’s how many days of Christmas there are.
That wasn’t how many malignant tumours she had, Ethan refused to believe it.
Well, as he soon learned, that there were most likely more than 12 tumours in the person he grew up with, the person he loves, the person he wanted to spend the rest of his life with, the person who had much less than a lifetime to live. There were twelve tumours over a month ago, and she hadn’t told him.
He was so caught up in his own feelings that he didn’t know his best friend had stage 4 pancreatic cancer. It was needless to say he felt like absolute shit. She had end-stage cancer and he, a doctor, couldn’t do a single fucking thing about it.
He waited until he was out of her sight before he let all his emotions out, he asked her if she could go back in the apartment and leave him on the roof to process what had happened, she did.
He knew all about pancreatic cancer, he knew that the symptoms usually don’t show up until it was too late, he knew that it would’ve already spread all across her body. Yet, it didn’t stop him from completely breaking down after she went back down.
He sobbed, he sobbed until all the tears were gone, then he shouted, he shouted at the night sky, shouting at every being up there, screaming at them, asking how they could possibly curse the most perfect person in the world with an untreatable tumour.
Once he was done, once his tear ducts were dry and his throat was hoarse, he returned to the apartment, his eyes red and his throat sore. He quietly crept into her room, seeing those teary eyes of hers that broke his heart, that made every cell in his body hurt and scream. He wordlessly climbed into her bed and wrapped his arms around her. That was how they spent the rest of the night, him silently holding her in his arms, not willing to ever let go.
She fell asleep fast, she was tired, she was always tired nowadays. He was the opposite, his mind racing. He spent the entire night hating himself for not realising sooner, for missing all the clues. All the clues that were right in front of his face this whole time.
He remembered the first time he tried to tell her when she came home upset, was that when she learned the news? He thought about how she reacted to the movie they watched, he finally realised why she was crying so much more. Then there was the night she threw up, he cursed himself for missing that. It had been so obvious. But he hated himself the most for not spending all his time with her when he had the chance.
Now as he sat in the hospital room, his head in his hands as she slept soundly, all he could do was wait. Wait for the cancer to take her from her friends, her family, from him. That’s all he could do now, wait. Ethan had been in the hospital for a week now, she’d wanted to be at Edenbrook so that he could see her during his breaks, but he hadn’t worked since the day he found out.
He only went back to their apartment to take a shower every now and then, and even then he sprinted to and fro. They didn’t know when her time would be up, it could be hours, days, weeks, or even months. And he had to be around when she ran out of time, he would hate himself even more if he wasn’t.
He had called all of their friends, and they all took turns showing up at her room to see her. Bryce showed up with a gigantic stuffed teddy bear that didn’t fail to make her laugh. Jackie came with a million stories about her horrible intern, attendings, and patients alike. Sienna came in everyday bearing fresh home-cooked food for her.
His dad and her mom showed up most days too, providing words of encouragement for not only her, but him as well. They both figured out one way or another how he felt about her, and they knew how hard it was for him.
Ethan was always at the hospital, but limited the time he spent in her room. He couldn’t stand being at her bedside, watching her groan and moan in pain as he was completely fine. Everything just felt too real for him.
“Doctor Ramsey, she’s asking for you,” a nurse said. He looked up and nodded. His feet felt heavy, like they were made of bricks as he approached her room. He pushed the door open, and his heart dropped at the sight before him.
She was staring back at him, her eyes hadn’t changed a single bit. The rest of her didn’t share the same fate as her eyes. She was thinner, her face pale and gaunt, she looked exhausted. The hospital gown looked as if it was wearing her, and not the other way around. And despite all of that, she was still beautiful in his eyes.
“Hi,” she said in a whispered tone.
He pressed his lips together, choking back the tears that were beginning to form. He couldn’t handle this.
“You look awful,” she teased, which earned a pitiful laugh from him as he wiped the sides of his eyes where tears were moments away from falling.
She moved to one side of the hospital bed to make room for him. He hesitated for a moment, afraid that he would hurt her some way, but he eventually laid down beside her. Her frail frame clung to him, and he felt the dreadfully familiar feeling of her tears staining his shirt.
“I’m so scared, Eef,” her use of the enchanting nickname she gave him that he wholeheartedly loved made the tears fall from his eyes as he closed them tightly, holding back a sob.
He didn’t know what to say, he couldn’t find the right words, so he just hugged her as tightly as he could without hurting her and pressed his lips against her forehead. After all, what were you supposed to say to someone whose life you would trade your own with when they’re dying?
Was he supposed to lie and say “everything’s going to be okay”? He wouldn’t, he couldn’t bring himself to lie to her any longer after all the wasted time he spent lying about his true feelings. No, he would hold her. He would hold her and love her until he couldn’t love her anymore.
Peter Parker x gender neutral reader with powers
Y’know I asked for a part 2 because some parts of the moodboard weren’t utilized but I actually don’t have a plan for this… just like most fics I write.
Part 2 of Stunned
Requested: Yes, by several peeps
Word Count: 2525
Warnings: swearing (probably), Ted Bundy is mentioned (just the name, not what he does, though it is sugested)
Ever since you’d met Spider-Man, showed him your identity and all, Peter has been a little more awkward than he already was around you.
Though, of course, you didn’t know how those two things corresponded with each other.
It was still a bit suspicious though. Analyzing the situation you could come up with at least 5 reasons.
That last pick up line was bad.
That last pick up line was too explicit.
You’d rubbed off on him as a little too harsh or bold for his comfort.
Something happened to him that was entirely unrelated to you.
He’d caught on with your little crush.
The last two were the most probable ones.
That was what you told yourself, but sometimes your friends told you that the pick up lines were bad. Most of the time, you just brushed it off because a. Your friends liked to pick on you, and b. You don’t utilize overused internet lines.
Either way, the pick up line from before this whole awkward dilemma had still gotten him to blush red. He hadn’t grimaced or giggled. Then again, this was Peter Parker, the smart and somewhat shy boy that you’d managed to fluster nearly every day since the start of the year.
You decided to confront him, get to the root of the problem. Speculating was useless in this situation.
“Hey, Peter.” You tap him on the shoulder.
It surprises him, as it’s lunch time and you’d usually sit with the popular kids.
“H-Hey.” He stutters back. Out of your peripheral view, you could see his friend scooting away from you two ‘discreetly’.
“Can we talk? Alone?” You rub the back of your neck, which makes him slightly curious. You looked nervous, which you usually wouldn’t be. At least your constant smile was still there.
As you walked out the cafeteria, Peter thought about what you’d want to talk about.
Were you finally going to ask him out? It’d already been quite the year of pick up lines and he felt anticipation build up whenever you’d approach him. It’d do both of you good, though he assumed you liked him. He wasn’t so sure about it, even if all signs pointed to yes.
Thought right now you seemed a little too nervous to be asking him out. You were always so bold, a harsh contrast from him, so he assumed when the time came, you’d be just as confident as always. Then again, he couldn’t really judge.
You could also be telling him something else. What it was, Peter didn’t know, which is why his brain was exploding with possibilities.
When you were outside the cafeteria, you made sure the halls were clear. It confused him further. What were you going to tell him that required no witnesses?
Oh god, you weren’t going to Ted Bundy him, were you?
“Peter.” You start slowly, which makes him want to bite his nails in anticipation. “Why,” You take a deep breath. “Why have you been awkward around me lately?”
Peter can feel the blood heat up his cheeks as he scrambles for an answer. “I-I uh.. I always have?”
You laugh, and god does it make him feel like he’s exploding. “Well, you’ve been more awkward than usual.”
Peter tilts his head, feigning confusion, you can’t help but think it’s adorable. He knows the answer to that question, but you don’t know it correlates to him being Spider-Man. “I have?”
You nod your head, looking off in embarrassment. It seems you’d seen things wrong. “Right, right.” You laugh at yourself. “Sorry, I’m overreacting.”
“Yeah.” Damn it Peter, that’s no way to ease your crush. “I mean, no, no, no! It’s- It’s fine!” He waves his hands around in a panic.
You laugh at his embarrassment this time. “If you say so, darling. By the way, I haven’t complimented you today have I?”
Peter shakes his head timidly.
“Oh, really? Well then, you’re really cute with a blush. I’ll see you around, Pete.”
When you leave, Peter nearly melts to a puddle just from how flustered he is. Another big factor to that nearly happening is the fact that he had to hide his secret from you.
Of course, hiding it was a given, but hiding it from somebody you have a crush on is way different than hiding it from the general public.
Before he could let himself zone out in the hall, he walked into the cafeteria, mostly to tell Ned.
You’d always thought Spider-Man was uptight. So that day with him, where you let him stay with you to rest, had changed your mind.
Maybe he was still uptight when choosing which crimes he should stop, graffiti obviously being one of the ones you think he shouldn’t prevent, but you thought his personality was uptight. You could work on it though.
“Spider-Man’s here!”
You glanced over to see all your graffiti friends, most of them being stoners as well, bolt in the direction of the exit.
You didn’t know how he got there, seeing as you had to cross some train tracks, go down an ominous hallway, then jump a fence, though he didn’t need to jump the fence.
He’d probably followed you there, but for some reason decided to stick around, pun unintended, for half an hour before revealing himself.
Before he could catch any of them, you use your powers to dash over and hold him in place.
“Thanks (y/n)!” They shout at you as they run.
“Hey, no problem dude. See you later!” The nerve of you to reply like that with Spider-Man in your hold.
Speaking of which, the spider groans as he watches them leave. Even with his enhanced strength, he couldn’t get out of your grip. Maybe that was another part of your powers.
You only let go of him when they were all out of sight.
Spider-Man figured he could catch up to them, but it was useless. You were there to catch him, and you could even knock him out like last time. Although, last time was an accident, as you’d assured, he couldn’t trust you.
He groans and faces you, not expecting to be faced with your smirk.
“Come back for another kiss, Spidey?” You tease, leaning against the graffitied walls of the restricted area.
“Okay, this time, you broke an entry!”
You laugh at how pissed off he seemed. “I thought it was breaking and entering.” You joke.
He seems taken aback. “I--” He huffs out in frustration. “Alright, so what? You broke the law, you pay the price.”
“Spider-Man.” You tilt your head and give him an all-knowing look. “You’re a superhero. Don’t you got any other crimes to bust? Besides,” You shake your spray paint can. “What’s stopping me from running?”
Spider-Man groans with his head in his hands. You were really getting on his nerves.
He thinks of a plan for a few minutes. He could web onto you when you ran, but even if you didn’t break the webbing, it would turn into a wild goose chase.
“Your powers are overpowered.” He groans.
“It’s much worse than you think.” You mutter, thankfully he doesn’t catch it. “But imagine somebody with an insignificant power, something like tasting certain—“
He tunes the rest of your rambling out as he thinks about you, but that doesn’t mean he’s not looking at you either.
He thinks about how much he wanted that conversation today to be a confession from you. He didn’t dwell on it at the moment, but he certainly thought about it afterwards.
He was fantasizing about having a relationship with you. Hanging out on rooftops, art dates, not giving a care in the world about where you kissed... He’d done this so many times before it’s as if he was looking back on a memory.
“Earth to Spider-Man?” You snap him out of his thoughts.
He jumps back against the wall, startled. You snicker a bit, “Didn’t mean to scare you. I was going to ask, do you wanna hang out?”
Peter furrows his eyebrows, why would you suddenly ask this? “Uh..” He tries to think of an excuse. “Shouldn’t you be sleeping?”
“Shouldn’t you be sleeping?” You retort.
“I guess.” Peter shrugged. “But I could be one of your teachers.”
You make your way to the exit, forcing him to follow you. “Hmm, don’t think so.” You take a glance at him as if to get a look at his face and then remember he wears a mask. “You sound like a teen.”
He should really have a voice changer in his suit.
“Ey,” Spider-Man calls with a finger pointed at you.
You put your hands up in surrender, dropping the spray can to the floor with a clang. “Fine.”
“This was your hideout spot?” He asks, looking around the alleyway. It wasn’t that far from the one where you injured him, but that wasn’t the point. It looked just like any other place.
“No, it’s up there.” You reply, pointing up at the rooftop. “ Race me up?”
He lets out a small laugh, forgetting what your powers allow you to do. “What’s the prize?”
“No prize, just friendly competition.” You pause for a moment, trying to remember something. It was on the tip of your tongue. “Oh, right! Also, bragging rights.”
“Alright.” He agrees, holding out his hand. “Let’s shake on it.”
“Shake on it?” You laugh, but oblige anyway. “Okay, on the count of 3.”
After a brief countdown, which surprised him when you didn’t pull a trick on him with it, you ran up the wall and got up there first. Granted, he did the same thing, but you were faster.
“Damn.” Peter complained, earning him a smirk from you.
He didn’t linger upon the thought, though, instead he looked at you. Your legs were glowing neon red, just like the rest of the times he’d seen your powers. “See something you like?”
He snaps up to your eyes. “Who admires legs?” He tries to play it off cool.
“Plenty of people.” You walk over to the edge of the roof, which was barely preventing falling with a half wall.
You sat down on the wall, gesturing for Spider-Man to sit next to you.
“Isn’t this dangerous?” He sits down either way.
You raise an eyebrow at him, “I’ve seen you do this before.”
“You have?” He didn’t think many people looked at him often, since he was whizzing past them everyday. Well, he was sitting stationary rather than swinging.
“Mhm.” You hum a yes, swinging your legs back and forth.
You both sit in silence for a few minutes. You fiddled with the light from your glow stick while Peter was trying to decipher if the silence was awkward or comfortable.
You were thinking about who Spider-Man was, despite saying it was a bit rude the last time you and the spandex clad hero talked. You couldn’t stop yourself from thinking about it, especially when you suspected your crush of being Spider-Man. Nowadays, thinking about how cute Peter was, or how your relationship would go, would usually lead to thinking about the possibility of him being Spider-Man.
If you didn’t have a plausible reason to forget that possibility, you would never even think about confessing to Peter.
You really did, but you weren’t sure if he reciprocated your feelings. You would feel crushed if he said he didn’t like you back. You’d been crushing on him for the better half of the year and you were sure it turned into more than a small crush now.
A lot of late night thoughts were about Peter, so of course you’d already thought of the reasons why you thought he was Spider-Man and narrowed down the way to approach him and ask.
You doubted he’d tell you, but it was worth a try if it’d help you get over it.
“Hey, Peter.” You were about to correct yourself but Spider-Man interrupted.
“Who-Who’s Peter?” He tried to sound confused, but it came out as if he were playing off a bad lie. He rubs the back of his neck at his mistake.
You raise an eyebrow but continue anyway. “Spider-Man. You’re.. Peter, aren’t you?” You’d thought about this so many times yet the execution was horrible.
“Peter who?” He gulps nervously.
“Parker.” He stares at you in the eye. Your face is full of hope, and he doesn’t want to crush it by saying ‘no’. But he can’t have just anyone knowing he’s Spider-Man.
What kind of things would you do with that knowledge? You wouldn’t spread it around, he was sure of that! Was he?
What if other people knew you knew who he was? You’d be in danger of kidnappings. Then again, you had your own powers, ones that certainly felt better than his. But he didn’t know what kind of tech supervillains carry around.
He decides on saying no, despite how hard it’ll be to handle, for the both of you. He can’t help but think his decision isn’t well thought-out though.
The denial and the way he says it is enough to convince you, despite the suspicious way he acted earlier.
You let out an embarrassed laugh, fidgeting with your fingers. “Right, sorry. Bit rude of me to guess, isn’t it?”
“No.” Peter breaths out. “It’s alright, you’re curious.”
You nod, continuing to ramble in order to ease yourself. “It’s just.. you really remind me of him. He’s just,” You smile at the thought of him. “really cute. The way the both of you act is similar. I kind of like the guy, can you believe that?” You wait for a response, but he doesn’t give one. “No? He’s… perfect. I’ve been pining over him since the start of school.”
He can’t handle it anymore. Call him selfish, but hearing his crush likes him back is too much to handle. “I’m Peter Parker.” He says in a rush.
“What?” You’re startled, furrowing your eyebrows. “But you said--”
“Yeah, sorry. At the time it seemed like I shouldn’t have told you, the cons outweighed the pros but…” He knew what he had to say, but he was nervous. “I-I.. I like you too.”
You smile, standing up from the edge and pulling him with you. You move further onto the roof, at an area in the middle where not many people are likely to see you. “Prove it, then.” You were beaming with excitement.
Peter slowly slides off his mask, leaving you stunned as you look at him. “Hey, I’m Spider-Man. I’m here for more kisses.”
You laugh at the reference from earlier on that night.
“Can I kiss you?”
“I literally just asked for a kiss.”
“On the lips.”
“Oh.”
He nods and you happily give him a kiss. He responds quickly and rather sloppily, it’s a miracle how your noses don’t bump into each other from how uncoordinated he is.
“First kiss?” You ask when you pull back.
“Yeah.” Peter replies, face flushed not only from the kiss but also from the fact that you took notice of it being his first too.
“Do you need lessons?”
Congratulations, you just killed Peter Parker.
Right Where You Were Meant To Be (Bucky x Plus-size!Reader)
Fandom: Marvel
Characters: Bucky x Plus-size!reader
Warnings: Fluff, hurt/comfort, body-shaming
Story type: One-shot
Word count: 2.7k words
Summary: Reader has a crush on Bucky the second she looked at him but she also has feelings of self-consciousness about her body and doubts she’d ever end up with Bucky or any guy like Bucky. That all changes one night at one of Tony’s parties.
(A/N: This is a cute little one-shot idea I had and just wanted to write out. I feel there aren’t many plus-size!reader stories so I wanted to make my own. I’m a chubby girl and felt like I needed some love, lmao. Any mistakes I take responsibility for, this story wasn’t beta read, so I apologize for any mistakes. I hope you enjoy nonetheless!!! Also, the gif isn’t mine, but he just looks so precious <3)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It all started when you looked at him for the first time. He had just moved into the Tower, and you had just gotten the job as Tony's new assistant since Pepper had become CEO of Stark Industries. Because you worked in an environment with superheroes who were very fit and healthy, you had become self-conscious of yourself; whether it would be what you wore, the things you ate, or just how your body looked in general.
Being a bigger girl, it often took a toll on your mental health when you would notice the glances, the whispering, the judgmental stares, and how shopping for clothes in your size was difficult, and it made you feel like you had to lose weight to fit in and belong. You felt alone and isolated.
You didn't have any friends; you didn't even talk to many of your co-workers, and just kept to yourself a majority of the time. When Bucky moved in, you noticed he did the same. He didn't speak much to the rest of the team, he mostly stayed in his room, and only hung around Steve. Bucky was very fit, and his muscular body showed it whenever he wore tight-fitted clothing. You would never wear tight-fitted clothing for fear of having your plumpness accentuated.
After five months working for Tony and having a more friendly relationship with the rest of the team, you had built a few close bonds with some of the heroes. Wanda and Natasha were your closest girlfriends and would regularly have 'Lady's Nights' every Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. Tony, Clint, Sam, and Steve were like your older brothers and would look out for you.
You and Steve made it a routine to do small exercise and yoga in the afternoons just after 4 o'clock. How this all started was because you wanted to accomplish small goals for yourself, as Sam told you to do to help with your mental health.
"Steve," You called out as you stepped into the Tower's gym, the one place you knew where to find Steve if he wasn't in the common room.
"Oh, hey (Y/N)! What's up?" Steve turned to face you as he held the punching bag still while he watched you walk closer to him, noticing you fidgeting with your fingers nervously.
"I just... I wanted to start doing light exercises, you know, to boost my endorphins, and so I have something to do in the afternoons when I've finished with work." It wasn't a complete lie, but it just sugar-coated the fact that you just wanted to lose weight to gain confidence in yourself.
Steve had agreed to help you; he wouldn't push you too much either because he didn't want you to strain anything and not push you out of your comfort zone too much. Both of you would exercise for an hour each day in the afternoons. This routine had been going on for six weeks, and you were enjoying it. You felt better about yourself each week when you would check your progress and write down how much you lost during the week; you were more confident than you were all those weeks ago before asking Steve for help.
During one of those afternoon exercises, you and Steve were both in the Adho Mukha pose with Steve wearing his usual tight t-shirt that you swore was a size too small, and shorts while you wore a loose, black tank top, and tight-fitted leggings that complemented the shape of your plump ass. You were so in the zone that you hadn't heard the gym doors open and the sound of footsteps coming closer to you. Bucky stood behind you and Steve, him getting an eyeful of your butt while he cleared his throat to catch his best friend's attention.
"Hey, Bucky! I didn't notice you were there. (Y/N) and I were doing some yoga, would you like to join us?"
You. Were. Mortified. You quickly stood up beside Steve and looked down at your feet, trying to avoid looking at Bucky after having your ass practically in his face.
"Uh, I kinda have to get ready for 'Girl's Night' tonight, but I think Bucky can keep you company." You nervously spoke, having your words jumble out quickly due to your inner-embarrassment. "I'll see you later, Steve!"
You bolted out of the gym as fast as your legs could go and made it up into your room without another incident. When you flopped onto your bed, you let out a loud, exhausted sigh before closing your eyes shut tightly. 'Why did I have to act like a nervous wreck? You didn't even let him talk for Christ's sake!' After beating yourself up over the little incident, you started to get ready for 'Girl's Night' with Nat and Wanda.
It was two hours into 'Girl's Night' and you, Nat and Wanda had, at least, drank four glasses of Kraken Rum and about three shots of Vodka. You were more relaxed and carefree, enjoying your time with your best friends while gossiping about an episode of Criminal Minds you all saw the other day together.
"Not gonna lie, I would love to have a man like Morgan. Have you seen his muscles? And how he kicks down doors like a badass?" You gushed.
"That is true, and I fully believe Morgan and Garcia should be together. They have chemistry and look so cute!" Wanda loved her Morgan and Garcia ship.
"Eh, I like to have a super cute genius but that's just my opinion" Nat took a sip of her fruity vodka drink while shrugging her shoulders.
"Of course you would, you're with Bruce and that's a little bias, Nat." You gently shoved your red-haired friend playfully.
You and Wanda giggled like school girls when Natasha scoffed before she pointed an accusing finger at you.
"Well, says you, (Y/N)! You practically drool whenever you see Barnes."
That shut you up quickly. 'How does she know?! Play it off'
"That's very funny Nat, but I don't know what you mean."
"Don't bullshit me, (Y/N). I've seen the way your cheeks get all pink and how your eyes are glued to him whenever he walks by. You're so smitten it's grossly cute." Then Wanda turned to you with a small smirk on her face.
"Maybe you should ask him to work out with you and Steve!"
Flashbacks of your embarrassment earlier that day made your face go pale. 'Absolutely not'. You shook your head furiously, staring at your two friends with fear. There was no way you'd have the guts to do such a thing, not after how you acted around him before. Plus, you didn't want him to look at you with disgust when he looks at you working out. You shake off all the negative thoughts before finishing off your last bits of rum.
"I think I'm going to head off to bed now, gotta wake up early tomorrow. Tony wants me to help him organize and plan a gala party to celebrate his newest project. And when I say to 'help him' I mean I'll be doing most of the work while he hides away in his lab with Bruce." You said before walking off and waving the girls goodbye.
2 weeks later...
You had most of the gala planned out. You had booked a cute catering company to organize some food dishes for everyone and even hired a group of people to decorate one of the large common rooms that would fit all the guests on Tony's guest-list. You had even bought a cute new dress to wear for the party. The party was starting that night at 7:30 and you would hopefully get everything done while having an hour and a half to spare to get ready.
When the decorating and planning finished, you quickly made your way to your room and got showered and changed. You stood in front of your mirror for quite some time, nitpicking every flaw you could see, judging your appearance because you knew how the other women at the party were going to look flawless and have every man swooping in for them. A sudden knock on your door snapped you out of your negative thoughts.
"(Y/n), you ready?" Wanda's voice called from the other side.
"Y-yeah! I'm coming now." You dashed for the door to get away from the mirror so you can't put yourself down even more. Once opening the door, Wanda linked your arm with hers, and both of you walked toward the elevator.
Telling FRIDAY which floor, you both arrived just as a few of the guests were mingling around; drinking, eating, and chatting. You glanced around, hoping to see the familiar faces of your friends, spotting Sam, Nat, and Clint near the bar where Natasha was serving the drinks. Tony was standing next to Pepper and being an absolute flirt as always while Steve and Bucky were standing near a corner with drinks in hand. Before you could make your way over to the bar, Wanda told you to wait where you were while she goes to quickly touch up her make-up, disappearing before you could say a word. You stood there awkwardly and looked around, making sure everything was going swimmingly until you felt a presence behind you. A tap on your confirmed that someone was indeed behind you.
You turned around to see a group of two slender women and three muscular men staring at you with smug and cocky smiles on their faces.
"Can we get some more drinks? And make them with a little more alcohol this time." One of the men quirked an eyebrow, waiting for you to scurry off to grab their drinks.
"I'm sorry, but I'm not part of catering. I'm-"
"You certainly look it though, I mean, you're not dressed like you're here as a guest. The dress you're wearing looks like the other catering staff." A woman spat, her eyes narrowed at you. You started to feel self-conscious about your outfit now, realizing the color-scheme looked very similar to the catering staff.
"Plus, the dress isn't that flattering for your body hun. We can practically see your muffin top and panty lines with how tight that dress is on you." The other woman commented while she leaned to the side to glance at more of your plush figure.
A stinging sensation began to appear behind your eyes, feelings of doubt, and an anxiety attack began to make themselves known. So looked away from the group and quickly made for the elevator, shooting Wanda a quick text saying you weren't feeling too well. 'How stupid of me to think I even looked good or that I could fit in at the party.' By the time the elevator doors reached your floor and the doors opened, hot tears were falling down your cheeks as you tried to furiously wipe them away with zero results. The tears kept flowing down as you began to walk down the hallway to your room; quiet footsteps barely making noise as they followed you. Just as your hand settled on the door handle, a warm hand clasped onto your shoulder gently. With a yelp, you spun around with a jump to look at your "attacker", only to find a pair of stormy blue eyes staring at your teary eyes intensely.
Bucky's eyes held hints of concern and worry, but it was hard to see because he was good at hiding his emotions, and the fact that your eyes were blurry from crying.
"You okay, (Y/n)? I saw you leave the party quickly and noticed how fast your breathing was." Bucky had to look down at you because he was so tall, or was it because you were just very short?
"I'm fine, Bucky. I just don't do well in crowded places or with so many strangers. I got a bit overwhelmed but it's fine now." You weakly smiled but he could see right through it, he always did.
"You had a panic attack after speaking to a group of people, and judging by the looks they gave you while talking to them, I can only believe it wasn't a pleasant conversation." Bucky then brought both his flesh and metal hands to cup your face while he peered into your eyes more. "Tell me what happened, doll."
You sighed, you knew he wasn't going to let this go. Even though you both barely spoke to each other, he still cared for you like the both of you knew each other for years. Something about his calm voice and caring nature helped your nerves settle.
"They thought I was part of catering and asked if I could get them more drinks. I told them I wasn't catering, only for them to make snarky comments about my outfit and body. But it's fine, I'm used to having those comments made to me, I've dealt with those types of people all my life." Your hands gently held his and tried to move them away from your face but Bucky didn't budge.
"You don't believe them, right? I mean, I think the dress looks good on you. It shows off your curves and any man who doesn't get blown away is blind."
You gave a humorless laugh and shook your head at Bucky, looking down at the floor.
"You're just saying that to be nice to me, Buck. We both know girls like me don't belong in a place like this, or a party like that. You can go back to the party, I don't want to waste more of your time." You went to turn away when Bucky held your upper arms tightly.
"Not a chance, doll. I'm not a fan of crowds myself and was about to leave the party myself until I saw you run away. I'd rather spend my time with you and making sure you don't ever think that you don't belong."
You both stared at each other for a few seconds, his stare was intense with adoration and love while you stared at him in shock that he'd want to spend time with you. Before you could blink, Bucky leaned down and you felt his soft lips on yours, his arms wrapping around you and caging you into a warm and gentle embrace. Your hands rested onto his firm chest while his hands rested on your lower back, just above your butt. At first, you were in shock but then you gave in to the kiss and snaked your arms around his neck, your fingers embedded into his long hair.
The kiss was full of passion, and so much love that you didn't think it was possible. When the need for air was too much, you both separated and looked into each other's eyes once again.
"H-how? Why me? We barely know each other!"
"Because, (Y/n), I've been smitten for you since I first laid eyes on you but didn't have the guts to tell you. Steve's been a punk and trying to get me to join your work out sessions for weeks but I was too nervous to do it." Bucky's cheeks tinted red as he chuckled.
"And why's that? I was scared that if saw me working out, that you'd be grossed out by my body." You explained, chewing on your bottom lip.
"I could never be grossed out, sweetheart. I love a woman with curves and plumpness to her. I was nervous that if I watched you work out, I would try to make a move on you too fast and scare you away. I didn't want that to happen." Bucky grabbed your chin and leaned in again, his lips almost touching yours. "And you looked downright sexy in those tights, they shape your ass well."
You gasped and lightly smacked his shoulder while he smirked at you. His playfulness coming through. You made the first move this time and got onto your tippy toes to kiss him. This is was quicker than the first but still held the same emotions. With so much strength you underestimated he had, Bucky lifted you up, your legs wrapped around his waist as he opened your door and carried you over to your bedroom. Both of you watched a bunch of movies in your room; many kisses were shared before you both passed out, cuddled up under your fluffy blankets, safe in Bucky's arms. Right where you were meant to be all along.

Ectober Day 7: Hero - But It’s Not Funny
*a sequel to Realities Little Joke For Infinity* Highly recommend reading that first but it’s not exactly necessary.
Tony has a bad habit of adopting strays. Particularly the stupidly heroic kind that were too reckless and too selfless for their own good. So of course he wasn’t going to just ignore the random teen that literally saved the universe only to disappear into the future. Even if said teen was somewhat dead and the only hero left in a world and time that seriously needed more.
Tony grins as he finally gets the connection to work, making his face appear on the strange future teens laptop; or whatever tech people used in whatever time this kid’s in. Going a bit wide-eyed and wheezing when the first thing he sees is Phantom -in alien PJ’s, because of course the first thing he sees on the kid who showed up in a t-shirt and jeans to an active warzone is pjs- shrieking and jumping a foot off the ground while holding a full pot off coffee; which predictably sends the contents of said coffee pot flying into the air and splattering all over the teens face and floor.
Phantom looks to the screen slowly, with steaming coffee dripping off his chin, hair and eyelashes, “seriously?”.
At that Tony can’t help but bend over laughing. Straightening up and looking at the coffee pot, “what were you even doing walking around with a full coffee pot?”.
“Well I was going to drink it. But now it’s as empty as my wallet”, Phantom looks down at the pot and grumbles, “ya know what? Fuck it. I’m still gonna drink it”, then pointing his finger around and telekinetically making all the droplets of coffee on him and the floor float back into the pot.
Tony watches, a little disgusted, as the kid practically takes a full swing of the previously spilled coffee, shrugs, and sits down by his own screen; feet clearly pulled up onto the chair seat as well and coffee pot cradled between his knees and chest. Tony eyeballs the coffee pot, “you’re really going to drink that huh?”.
Phantom shrugs, “I know what’s on my floor”, looks down at the carpet and shrugs again while muttering, “a Zone damned biohazard of blood n’ ‘plasm that’s what. Oh!”, eyes widening a little, “and a sock with a questionable stain”, looking back to the screen, “‘s not like I can get sick anyway. I could drink this shit outta a radioactive waste barrel and be fine. Prob’ taste like shit tho”.
Tony wheezes both amused and pained, “please don’t kid”, that... that would definitely make him gag.
Phantom chuckles, “don’t intend to”.
The two sit in silence for a bit. Tony taking in the teens appearance. There’s hand-shaped bruising coating his neck, one of his fingers is clearly broken, and there’s a pencil-sized hole going clean through the other hands palm. Phantom doesn’t even seem to care about the state of his body, considering how relaxed he seems and the PJ’s. Plus, no way would Tony be carrying anything, including a full pot of coffee, with his hands in the state Phantom’s are.
Phantom yawns, Tony noticing that he’s missing more than a handful of teeth, before Phantom asks, “so...why’s the past tin can face-timing my laptop?”.
Tony puts on a smile, so it was a laptop. Neat. “future or not, I’ve adopted you as one of my brats. I remember you saying there wasn’t superheroes in your age”, waving his hand around, “no older generation to guide the newer. Well you're getting the older generation now”, shrugging and smiling more genuinely, “plus underroos won’t stop talking about you”. Understatement of the century, Peter was thrilled to meet another teen hero, and wouldn’t stop going on about what powers he might have or if he even has anyone to support him. The latter Tony cares about more.
Phantom wheezes, “whom the fuck is ‘underroos’?”, shaking his head, “so ya wanna be my mentor of sorts and help me blast my foes from the past?”.
Tony smirks and nods, this kid’s humour sure was something else, “exactly. And you met before, the kid? Peter?”. Sure it had been a few months but he couldn’t have seriously just forgotten?
Phantom tilts his head, “the red and blue teenager?”.
Tony grins, “you got it, kid”, eyeing the teen's hands again, “your hands gonna be fine?”.
Phantom waves one hand around, chugging more coffee, “eh don’t worry your metal ass about it. I heal like crazy”, stretching his feet out and resting them on the desk, “I’m just putting it off a while on my hands ‘cause the broken ribs and missing bits of spine are kinda more important ya know?”.
Tony rubs his temples, “Jesus Christ”, just how much damage can this teen sustain? That kind of injury should kill a person.
Phantom laughs, probably at Tony’s pained expression, “don’t worry about that either! Not like I can die twice! Haha!”.
Tony looks back to the screen at that, feeling a bit more serious, “yeah, Thanos said something like that. That you were dead but alive. And you confirmed it. What did he even mean?”.
Phantom purses his lips, “well I could explain but that also could mess with the time stream and could result in some weird immoral science crap”. Tony doesn’t get a chance to comment on that as Phantom turns his head to the side and whines exaggeratedly at the thin air, opening his mouth as wide as looks physically possible, maybe even past that, “tiiiiiiime dadddddddyyyyyyy, will this break the time stream? Your problem child has a proooooobleeeeeeem”.
Tony wheezes into his hands, “Christ”, and stares dumbfounded as a giant hourglass with purple sand comes out of nowhere and smacks the teen in the face, making Phantom fall out of the chair with a thud.
Phantom groans and begins laughing, righting himself and spinning the hourglass around, pointing the bottom of it at the screen, it reading ‘you’re fine’. Tony is so not reading into that, kid had someone like Strange in his corner. Phantom sits back down, lifting up the hourglass like it’s a weight, “Kay Kay Kay, so I’m a halfa right? Unique creature, that’s what I am. A fucked up little science project gone wrong, or right. Your choice. My folks screwed up in the lab and boom!”, he sticks his limbs out comically before righting himself and catching the coffee pot he effectively tossed in the air, “a whack-a-mole of electricity and a wormhole decided to stop my tiny little heart. Also restarted it too though! So it’s cool”, tilting his head, “wait... didn’t I already explain this?”.
Tony sighs, “sort of. We were in the middle of a war”.
Phantom quirks an eyebrow, “your point? That was, like, the bloody third one I’ve been in”, rolling his hand around, “first there was the High Ghost King, his fifty-thousand odd skeletons, and objects of near-unlimited power. The alternate future where an evil me single-handedly annihilated humanity, talk about traumatising having to fight yourself literally”, tilting his head, “and no clue if the plant guy with his army of mind-controlled people and plants or the sleep guy with his army of Walkers, counted as ‘wars’. And eh!”, snapping his fingers, “there was that guy I stole the Reality Gauntlet from! He took over the planet and turned people into clowns and shit. So that might be big enough to count as a war, even if it was just him versus me. But then the tornado guy caused storms all over the planet too so would that count then too?”, shrugging, “eh whatever. I’m sticking with three. Pariah would have eventually destroyed the Zone, which woulda ended the universe. Dan was actively on his way to ending all life in the universe, probably all death too. And grape guy, Thanos, was about to annihilate half the life in the universe which honestly would just end all life eventually... maybe”.
Tony stares at the kid before wheezing some more and falling backwards, “Christ”, righting himself and his chair, “there is something seriously wrong with your life. Like, seriously wrong”. Apparently the future was a freaking mess and fixing its crap was all on one random teen's shoulders. All because the kid died, which somehow gave him superpowers, and decided to make something good out of that death. Talk about unfair. And messed up. Really messed up. At least Tony had his team and they had each other, “please tell me you have some kind of support?”.
Phantom grins and nods eagerly, “got my guy in the chair techy, he destroyed a sataliget once! My rich activist goth, she sued one of my enemies into oblivion. And a ghost hunter who only sometimes tries to murder me and got a nanobot supersuit running through her veins; she can lowkey kick my ass if I hold back enough to avoid accidentally killing the living”, wagging his finger at the screen and getting really close, “us dead fucks are borderline indestructible immortals, halfas even more so”, leaning back and shrugging, “can still die, or fade it’s called for the spookies, though. Well, most can anyway. Timedaddy’s straight-up immortal. But if they died then, well, then the universe would literally implode from the time-stream collapsing”, and makes a little explosion sound and motion with his hands. Oh fuck, the kid was really just a damn kid. And from the sounds of it, his entire support was three teenagers. Ah Hell. Oh and some time being, ghost?, that just left him to his own devices.
Tony shakes his head, “you know what? That doesn’t actually make me feel any better”.
Phantom shrugs, drinks, swishes the coffee around, “don’t know what to tell you, man, my entire existence is pretty fucked up. My archenemy is my uncle, wants to adopt me, and gave me his inheritance. My girlfriend has a solid murder boner for me. My parents get giddy at the idea of dissecting me and are actually worse about that the odd time they’ve been successful. The kids’ at school think I’m their personal punching bag. The government would love to shoot me full of missiles and bombs. Pretty sure my sis is just using me for her research paper on ghost psychology or whatever. And my friendships are pretty much based on the three of us just being really weird”.
Tony groans, this kid probably needed more help and support that literally any other teen or hero. “ClockPops is great though. We play chess”,
Tony blinks, mentally pausing, “you... play chess? Seriously?”, this kid seemed to have more issues sitting still than Peter did. Tony finds it hard to believe he can sit through even half a game of chess.
Phantom nods and grins, “yup. Switched the pieces out for shot-glasses once, it was great. One of my teachers is cool too. He crossdressed and pretended to be his own sister to get me to try harder on a test; it worked better than it had any right to”.
Tony blinks and breathes, “your life”, shaking his head because it sounded like the future was just pure insanity, “well now I’m here and while I’m a bit reckless and a recovering alcoholic, I’m not insane”.
Phantom chuckles, “I’ll probably prove to be a bit much for you then. I’d have to be stupid to not think I’m not at least marginally nuts. Nowhere near frootloopy but eh”.
Tony sighs, being self-aware enough -or just not giving enough of a damn- to recognise that was both impressive and depressing. Impressively depressing. “A few of us Avengers are trained doctors and psychologists outside of being experienced heroes. So kid? You’ve got all of us. At least for verbal advice. Strange already went and basically confirmed that paying you a visit wasn’t a smart idea”.
Phantom snorts and rolls his eyes, sipping a bit more before staring down the pot at the small amount left. Speaking into the pot, “oh yeah, I can just imagine all the time problems that could cause. I’m surprised this is okay”.
Tony can’t help chuckling at the slightly silly image, though he’s not sure why the kid doesn’t just drink what’s left, savouring it maybe? “Same. Strange looked at me like he was questioning my sanity. He’s probably going to pester you about the Clock guy you keep mentioning”, grumbling to the side, “I just hope Loki will keep his trickster mitts off you”. Because fuck, they’d probably get on like fire and more fire. Which yeah, slightly horrifying mental image. Probably inevitable though. Loki was already impressed, amused, and interested by Phantom and literally everything the teen did after showing up. Seriously though, who’s first thought when fighting giant spaceships with mouths and other horrifying shit, is to turn it into bouncy balls and worms??? And a smoothie for a reward? For effectively saving the universe? Kid was a trickster, dabbled in death kind of literally, and ‘gave precisely zero fucks’. Loki would have a field day and probably be a horrid influence. Though thinking of it, Phantom might be a bad influence on Loki. Loki generally had reasons for anything beyond mild messing with people. Phantom seemed more likely to just go buck wild purely because he could. Even if he seemingly had a heart of gold and more self-sacrificial bones in his body than actual bones. Seemed like his entire world/time belittled and beat the shit out of him, and yet he gladly got dissected and lost chunks of his freaking spine for them. At least he had the power to back it up.
Tony quirks an eyebrow at mist, or something, leaving the kid’s mouth before Phantom goes wide-eyed and Tony jerks as an actual literal swear-on-every-ironsuit-and-the-entire-tower cartoonish rocket smashes apart what he’s assuming is-was a window; sending glass flying everywhere... and Phantom flying off-screen, the coffee pot going up in the air and sounding like it smashed apart on the ground.
Tony can practically hear the glare in Phantom’s voice, “hey! You spilled my damn coffee!”, while a robot blasts into the room, breaking more glass and bits of wood from the looks of it.
The robot pauses, seems to frown apologetically before shrugging, “apologies whelp, but it is no matter! You won’t need such things after I skin you!“. Tony chokes and gags a little at that. “Also-”, pointing to where Phantom probably is, “-that was practically empty”. Tony then stares as Phantom comes back in screen -looking all black and white- only for the robot to shoot a missile at him immediately, Phantom just sort of shrugs and lets the missile hit him in the face. This kid seriously really didn’t give a damn about his own well being.
And not even seconds later Peter walks in out of the blue, face lighting up as he notices the screen and probably Phantom’s very noticeable self on it, and dashes over. Obviously noticing Phantom’s current situation, “oh Phantom! Kick his butt!”.
Phantom does a silly thumbs up at the screen and immediately gets stabbed in the shoulder. Tony watches in slight disbelief at the kid looking at the knife, saying, “oh! You got a new knife! Shit is the handle engraved?!?”. And the robot actually stops and replies with a wide grin, “it was a valentines gift from Ember! Impressive right?”.
Tony and Peter both blink at the fight effectively stopping as Phantom pulls out the knife and looks it over, seeming impressed, “actually yeah”, pointing almost aggressively at the robot, “you got her something too right? You’re fucking horrible for that man”.
The robot rolls Its eyes, how metal is moving that organically Tony has no clue. “Of course whelp, those drum sticks you can sing into”. Phantom facepalms and Peter actually shakes his head in disappointment. Though Tony agrees, that was awful. But who talks with their enemy -who wants to skin them for peat's sake!- about presents?
Phantom makes a tsk tsk sound, “you dumbass, she got you a sick-ass knife and you got her a knick-knack? Seriously?”, Phantom walks off-screen, the two watching as what they’re assuming is cash flys over to the robot and Phantom returns on screen, “go by some flowers to make up for that crappy present. And for the love of everything, don’t get roses”, waving his hand around, “that’s so cliche. Go with tulips and forget-me-nots”.
The robot inspects the cash before flying off-screen, presumably back out through the window It destroyed, “I will have your pelt next time, whelp!”.
Phantom chuckles, shouting back, “sure you will, Skulkie! Ghost Zones greatest hunter”. Tony and Peter can feel the sarcasm in that. “Also! No you don’t have to ask! An engraved knife would be a wicked Christmas Truce present!”. Tony sighs when a ball or something slams into Phantom’s stomach and sends him flying off-screen.
Peter leaning towards the camera, “woah! You okay?”.
Phantom’s laughter echoes horribly, “right as rain! Mind you, it’s not actually raining”, righting himself and pulling himself up into the previously knocked over chair, “don't mind Skulker, he’s a poacher and I’m rare. Practically one of a kind actually. A poachers dream prize. His girlfriend has a mind-controlling guitar and occasionally attempts at world domination”. A ghost-shaped guitar floats on-screen, Phantom grabbing it, “she gives awesome presents though”, and gives the guitar a good couple strums.
Peter’s eyes go wide, “you can play the guitar?!?”, tilting his head and asking what is in Tony’s opinion a more important question, “wait, your enemies buy you presents?”, tilting his head back, “oh man that’s awesome”. Tony just shakes his head with a smile, teenagers.
Phantom grins and strums some more before the guitar floats off-screen, “all my enemies do”, shrugging, “for the Christmas Truce and my death-day anyway. But that’s normal. A ghost culture thing. Even the prison warden guy, whose got special torture weapons set aside just for little ol’ me, buys me some kind of present. Heck! Even the eyeballs do! And they’ve repeatedly tried to assassinate me”.
Tony blinks, “kid, that makes no sense. But I’m glad they’re at least occasionally nice to you”. Hell knows Phantom needs someone to be nice to him.
Peter tilts his head, “what even is a ‘death-day’? Sounds dark”.
“Oh nothing special, just the day I died. Like a birthday! But for death! A real dead-ringer of a holiday!”, and laughs loudly before rolling his eyes at Tony, waving his hand around, “eh, I’m kinda their king so be kinda a dick move to not give me gifts on literally the two biggest holidays”.
Peter practically shrieks, “WHAT! You’re a king! Oh that is so cool”. Tony blinks, “you did mention something about being the guardian of death and Earth”.
Phantom laughs some more and finger-guns while winking at Peter, “yup! Very important, much power”, and grins stupidly before pointing to the air above his head; a green floating crown bursting to ‘life’ with green mist or something wafting off, followed by a black cape with a flaming white collar and large flaming green skulls pinning it closed with a shadowy chain.
Peter cheers immediately, then adding, “Loki would love this!”. Tony points at him, “no. I want to keep that one as far away as possible for as long as possible”.
Phantom snickers, “I have chronic bad luck, so don’t count on that working out for you. Spidey probably has better tastes than you though, Ironass”.
Tony shakes his head with a smile, “you like making up names for people huh?”.
Phantom grins meanly, “it pisses people off. Which makes them easier to hit”, and holds up a fist, smacking a hand on his bicep.
Tony can’t help but laugh at that, “you got a point kid!”, though that was stupid reckless, and effectively confirmed him being tricky. One of Tony’s tech toys starts beeping so she moves to check it out. Peter taking his place in the chair. Glancing back at Tony before looking back to the screen, “hey I’ve got a question, teen to teen. What’s being a hero to you? Why do you do it? It just... it seems like your only suffering for it. Waaaaay more than normal. And not making stuff much better for it”.
Phantom hums, spinning around in the chair, “a hero's not afraid to give their life, and anything worth doing is worth getting hurt for. I do it so others will not suffer. That is all. It doesn’t matter if things change or not. If there’s still unnecessary violence and pain, then it is still a hero's place to grab their fists around it and pulverise it to Hell and back. So long as cruelty exists I will be there to stand against it. With a smile on my face and a laugh in my heart and Core. Because there is no greater joy, no greater choice, no greater path, than self-sacrifice for the sake of another. Regardless who they are, what they are. Good or bad. Young or old. And whether they support you, or not”, Phantom nods, puts his hands behind his head, cape bunching up, and looks to the side, “and maybe someday things will change. I doubt it, but who knows. But if things do, if that kind of future is on the horizon, then I think I’ll rest. Until then, I’ll be here. Doing what I do and suffering immeasurably for it. Until the world doesn’t need ‘heroes’ anymore. Till it doesn’t need me anymore”, looking back at the screen, Tony having walked back over slowly though the kid doesn’t pay him any mind, “so I guess, being a hero to me is being the embodiment of a brighter future. To absorb the suffering of the world”, sticking a finger up, “like a paper towel!”. Tony chokes at that a little; though the kids' sudden seriousness and introspection was just as startling as last time.
Tony shakes his head, “you make it sound like you’re immortal, kid. Also, that’s what a team’s for, to help share the load. The burden. Sure your ideals are noble and probably needed, but you can’t help anyone if you destroy yourself”.
Phantom smiles but something about it seems almost... sad. “In a way, I am. A ghost can not die and a human can not fade. A ghost ceases to exist when they fade and a human when they die. Yet I can do neither. So that raises the question, what is ‘death’ for a halfa? An idea? An ideal? A reality? Or just pointless conjecture. And besides, for a ghost to fade they must satiate their Obsession. Be satisfied with the fulfilment of their existence”, pointing to his chest, “and my Obsession? Protection. To protect is a physical and mental need for me. And it will never be satisfied till there’s nothing left needing protection. And it is thus that I will always be here”, shrugging and chuckling, “likely anyway”.
Tony blinks, that... that changed a lot actually. It also explained a lot. This wasn’t some kid playing hero, or even an experienced hero just doing what’s right and their job. This wasn’t someone stuck in a bad way and doing what needed to be done purely because no one else could. This wasn’t someone trying to do good to make up for their sorted past. This was someone wise beyond their years, with little to no regard for themselves, and a living -half-living- embodiment of the word ‘hero’. Watching the teen turn his head at someone -likely his mom- shouting that supper was ready. There was a rocket-powered fistfight minutes ago and his parents’ didn’t even check on him. Christ that was depressing. But it also made him want to help this kid out all the more.
Phantom turns back to the screen, “whelp that’s my queue then I guess. And let me guess? This-” gesturing at the screen, “-is gonna become a thing? Which totally cool, little warning next time. And keep this mind, walking the straight and narrow takes more time than I got. I will steal, mildly harm, trick, and lie, as I see fit”.
Tony rolls his eyes, he’d expect no different from a kid basically left up to their own devices, “we’re all guilty of that, kid”. Phantom just laughs as the screen goes dark.
Tony leans back, well fuck, he wasn’t prepared for the kid to have shit that bad. And the King situation definitely threw him through a loop. He’ll have to talk to Thor -not Loki, dear God not Loki- about that. Being a hero and a king.
Regardless, they’re gonna help the weird spooky future kid out. And Peter absolutely liked Phantom, which hopefully wouldn’t be a bad thing. Hopefully. (And it wasn’t, if you ignored Peter carrying out more than a few pranks on Phantom’s behalf).
End.

“...Bystanders have not been hurt, although Paris’ superheroes have not made an appearance yet…”
There was unrest among the students of Francoise Dupont High School as Adrien listened to his friends talk quietly amongst one another. Thunder rumbled in the distance as heavy, chilling rain poured down from the skies. There was a gloomy eeriness that clung to the air, a quiet that made the high schoolers feel like they were just waiting for something to shatter the silence. Grey clouds were collecting, casting the city in shadow-like darkness.
Another Akuma attack had been reported yet again. The Parisian superheroes were more than glad to help out, but it was obvious they were tiring: their moves became sloppier, their conversations shorter, and their patience thinner.
Adrien listened to the chatter exchanged between Alya and Nino, while Marinette remained quiet. She looked tired, which really wasn’t that uncommon, but her fatigue seemed to spill into all of her activities. She had less “pep in her step,” as Alya had said, and her eyes weren’t nearly as bright as they used to be. Not that he meant to pay attention to such things, of course, but it was hard to not notice. Even Chloe, who couldn’t give a rat’s ass about anyone but herself, had laid off on the harassment. Adrien chalked up his attentiveness to Marinette as nothing more than being a good, concerned friend, but as of late that excuse was becoming harder to sell, even to himself.
It started about four months ago when they came back from summer break. Everyone had gone back to school and while Adrien was physically there, he was mentally absent. Kagami had just gone abroad for school again after they’d broken things off. He would have liked to say it was a mutual breakup, but she was the one who brought it up. Kagami was wise beyond her years so when she told him that his heart wasn’t in the relationship, he knew she was right. He expected his first heartbreak to be gut-wrenching, but it wasn’t. He felt sad, sure, but not in the way that leaves you paralyzed in bed for weeks on end. At the time, he wondered why that was, but the answer was obvious: Marinette.
When he got to school, it was almost as if she could see the gloomy cloud over his head. She was there for him when no one else seemed to notice, her stuttering and fumbling hardly present in their conversation. In the beginning, he felt almost guilty for confiding in her. It would’ve been ignorant of him to believe she didn’t have problems of her own (who didn’t?), but it was a fact known by many that Marinette Dupain-Chang was one to do whatever she could to help the people she cared for.
It was then that he noticed it: the butterflies. It was like a tsunami of anxiety, excitement, and shyness all rolled into one whenever she did anything: the way her hair moved in the breeze, her clear laugh that dared him to smile, but most of all, her kindness. Marinette was one of those people that you couldn’t hate. She was that person who helped others even when no one was looking. He didn’t want to, but he couldn’t help himself when he started falling for her every move.
She didn’t know, probably never would, but she had him whipped.
The blonde was snapped back into reality when his best friend nudged him: “You coming?” Nino’s brow arched in question.
He looked across the street, where his bodyguard was waiting for him, standing by the driver’s side door of the sleek black Audi. Though it’s been the same car since Adrien was like thirteen, it still looked brand new.
“I forgot my homework,” he said to Nino, calling out to his bodyguard to repeat the same thing. With a barely discernible nod of approval from the bodyguard, Adrien turned back toward the school doors.
Adrien grumbled as he jogged away from his friend group: “Well, Nadia, Paris’ superheroes happen to have vaguely normal lives too if you weren’t aware.”
Plagg floated up from Adrien’s pant pocket and did circles around his owner’s head. “You put too much faith in humans, they don’t think about that kinda stuff. To them, you and Ladybug are untouchable.”
“Yeah, well we’re not,” he mumbled frustratedly. He pressed his palms into his eyes tiredly and took a deep breath before dropping his arms back down to his sides.
“Plagg claws out,” he muttered.
Plagg liked to think he knew his miraculous holder quite well. Despite the kwami’s demeanour and seeming distaste toward anything non-cheese related, he did have feelings. Yes, he loved cheese, but he also loved Adrien. He had spent the last two years with Adrien, and he knew something was terribly wrong with his owner.
He’d ask later. The cat-like kwami entered the ring miraculous, and with that, Adrien Agreste was gone, replaced by Chat Noir.
The leather-clad hero headed toward the disaster zone, the rain not doing anything to help his vision. He landed on a rooftop near the Akuma attack and swiftly surveyed the scene. Upon not seeing Ladybug anywhere, Chat Noir sent a quick message to Ladybug, highlighting the damage, before swooping in to hold off the Akuma.
xXx
To put it simply, Marinette was struggling. It had been the fifth Akuma attack that week and after two years of being Ladybug, her excuses were becoming weaker and weaker as time went on. Adrien’s abrupt exit was odd, but she didn’t have time to think about it as she felt the ground shake slightly. It didn’t matter how exhausted she was, she couldn’t put off her duties any longer.
“I uhm, I forgot I had a question for Miss Bustier. I’m going to go see if she’s still around and I’ll uh just stay here until Ladybug and Chat Noir get everything taken care of!” she flashed her friends a thumbs up and with that, she ran back inside the school, toward the locker room. She opened her tiny purse in order for Tikki to emerge. “This is bullshit,” she muttered to herself.
Tikki gasped in shock. “Marinette!”
“Sorry,” she mumbled half-heartedly, “You wouldn’t happen to care if I maybe just happened to not show up and let Chat handle it?”
The glare that the small kwami sent her way told her otherwise. “Something about this one tells me that you’ll need all the help you can get,” she told her owner.
Her stomach twisted with anxiety, both confusion and shock washing over her face. Tikki had never talked about the dangers of an Akuma before, which alarmed Marinette. Shit.
“Tikki, spots on.”
Ladybug swung with all her might as her trusty yoyo grabbed onto buildings and chimneys, the sounds of destruction nearing. A black blur, undoubtedly Chat, streaked the cloudy, grey sky as an akumatized villain screeched out. Her eyes skimmed over the cobblestone streets in front of her, but nothing could prepare her for the screams of terror and bloodied civilians that scattered the scene below.
Her feet had only touched down on the ground for a second when she heard him.
“Nice of you to drop in,” Chat purred, startling her. “You’re late,” he added, his voice icier than expected.
“Cry about it,” Ladybug responded coldly.
“Meowch m’lady,” he said in mock hurt.
“Sorry,” she muttered to her partner as she took him in. His blonde silky hair was plastered to his head from the pouring rain, the droplets permeating the black leather. If the suit wasn’t skin-tight before, it certainly was now. She had to tear her eyes away from the sight of him, her sensibility screaming at her to focus while her eyes wanted nothing more than to drink in every inch of him.
Literally what the fuck, she said to herself. Now was no time to pine for her partner.
The Akuma that stood before her was physically underwhelming in stature, but her clothing made up for it. The girl in front of them held herself at around 5’3 and couldn’t be more than 18, but her wicked smirk sent a chill through her spine. The girl was clad in an array of green from forest, sage, to mossy shades, the dress that adorned her body looking like that straight from greek mythology. It was made up of grand silks, almost entrancing Ladybug and Chat with the way that the fabric moved like rippling water. It was ethereal, really, but the closer she looked at it the deadlier it became.
From around the waist and shoulders, long strips of silk floated behind her like the snakes on the head of Medusa. They almost seemed to bend to her will, the fabric defying gravity. Not only were pieces of the dress floating, but so was her long dark hair. In her hand was a staff made from tree trunk like material. Resting atop her head was an obsidian black crown with spikes the length of Ladybug’s hand.
After looking around at the already distraught state of the street, their evaluation was over: she was not going to be another walk in the park.
“Shit,” Chat breathed out. It was at that moment that the villain opened her mouth to address both the heroes and bystanders.
“Citizens of Paris, I am Gi Mágissa. I am not here to compromise with your heroes. Others in the past have failed to retrieve what Hawk Moth desires, but I will not: today will be the day that you remember as the fall of Ladybug and Chat Noir.” Her voice resonated as if it was echoing off the walls. She shifted her gaze to the left, her eyes locking with the two of them.
“Give me your miraculous and I may decide to spare you and your city,” she said in a dangerously low voice. Her voice was smooth, yet it cut right through the two partners like a freezing wind in the dead of winter. Under any other circumstances, her words would be humorous, cheesy even, but this was not like anything else they faced.
Chat laughed as his trademarked smirk appeared. “Funny, because I don’t remember agreeing to that,” he said in mock thoughtfulness, almost like he was trying to recall a memory.
“Chat,” Ladybug hissed, “I’m starting to get the feeling that you won’t be able to joke your way out of this one,”
“C’mon m’lady, live a little.”
“Yeah, well I might not be alive to do so if you keep being an idiot.” Ladybug could feel the frustration rising in her as Chat continued to appear so casual and relaxed. How could he not sense that this was so much worse than before?
Chat turned to her and she could finally see his eyes. Despite his outward appearance, she saw the nervousness in his gaze. There was almost a buzz in the air, a metallic smell that made them wrinkle their noses: blood, iron maybe.
“Fine. Let’s get this over with.”
