5. Most popular fic this year

Technically I have to say RBTR as I did update it this year once but I'm not gonna consider it because it has been on hiatus almost the whole year... So instead I'm gonna say it's a three-way tie between Frogs and Knights, Ingenuous & You Were Right I was Wrong. Simply because those three have a constant traction of kudos coming in etc.

15. Something you learned this year

At the end of the day places like here, Tumblr, Ao3 and many others are just fandom spaces. And people have their own opinions on certain things. Even if certain people are popular fans in the community does not mean you have to like their work, fanfiction, headcannons, every single thing they post, no. You be your own person and write what you want to write and create what you want to create.

25. A fic you read this year that you would recommend everyone to read

Okay I'm gonna mention a few because I can't pick one. Also please read the tags on all of these!

A Minor Situation by @thecourtsorcerer

Merlin is court sorcerer and an incident happens with Mordred making him a small boy again. It's not finished but this fic is so delightful and I just love the idea of Mordred being tiny again and magic being accepted. And Gwyn's writing is amazing as always, how they do it is a mystery but *mwah* highly recommend this fic.

Would it be cheating Zoing if I put you on here?... Oh well.

I've Tried To Understand by @zoingeroni

The way the letter are written literally just tear me apart. This takes place sometime after Mordred leaves Camelot and certain people are sending him letters. It's absolutely heartbreaking because it feels so personal in a way that you, the reader are receiving these letters like your in Mordred's shoes and Ahhhhh... A must-read. The certain details in the first chapter are adorable, the second and third chapters are a bouquet made of heartaches, and the ending to the third chapter is...wow. Just go read it!

I remember thinking Mordred and Daegal would be a cute ship back in like 2015 sometime after the show had ended, but I couldn't look any fandom space in the face back then still so I just reclused myself again. When I got courage earlier this year and searched for Daegal's character in the Ao3 tags I was so surprised to find fanfiction and this was the first (and only one I believe) I read. And 2015 me would have been bouncing off the walls. This fic single-handedly pulled all those suppressed memories (and hidden notebooks) out from all those years ago and made it feel like new again. The way Naomi writes it is just so fricken cute and the ending is hilarious, cute, and awkward all at the same time and gives it this very teenager feeling to a relationship and I just love it.

Sir Mordred and the Homoerotic fanfiction by Noot_is_not_creative

I was skeptical going in to this fic because I don't ship Mordred with anyone aside from like Kara, Daegal etc people I headcanon as around his age. But this fic had me laughing and feeling so much second-hand embarrassment for Mordred. But in this fic Mordred has a innocent crush on Merlin and teenage hormones aren't friendly so he copes by writing fanfiction about him and Merlin (Merthur is end game I believe for the fic and the Merdred is just one side with Mordred's innocent crushing on Merlin)... Sadly this fic is not finished but my gosh what two chapters their is, is just amazing and worth it.

There is another fic I wanted to list but I can't find it but essentially it's right after 5x11 and Morgana is comforting Mordred about Kara's death. Very cute and sweet fic that really captures both of their characters splendidly.

"No- no! Mordred!" Daegal squealed. His laugh filled the room as The Druid tickled him. Daegal being light enough that when he kicked up Mordred was still able to hold him in place and not drop him. Despite all his wiggling around Daegal grew no closer to an escape from Mordred's grasp.

"Are you going to take it back?" Mordred stopped. Letting Daegal try to catch his breath and calm his laughter before answering. 

Daegal shook his head, pressing his lips together as his smile only brightened at Mordred's daring look.

"Oh really?" 

"Mhm." 

Mordred shrugged his shoulders, "You asked for it." 

"No, I didn't. I didn't!" Daegal could barely get his words out before his mid-section was attacked again. 

"Then?" 

"No!" He yelped in between gasps of breath.

"Do it, or I'll keep going." 

"Never!" 

"Mordred," Arthur called, hiding the amused grin on his face. Mordred hastily let go of his friend, Making sure he didn't double over before turning towards the king. 

"Your Majesty!" He squeaked, hands pulled behind his back. While Daegal held his stomach, trying to catch his breath and keep a semi-straight face.

"Get out to the field, Mordred. But I want you to take it easy one more day, you understand?" 

He nodded his head, "yes Sire."

I don't even remember writing this, this doc is like a black hole...

2021 fanfic year in review

Decided to jump in because why not 😊

How many stories did you complete?

12 but technically 11 because one isn't finished quite yet.

What is your total word count for the year?

According to my stats 90,292 but my longest story was update once this year and that was for a quick announcement so without that one it's 47,991. Then in my unfinished drafts I have at least another 50k but who cares about that XD

What fandom did you write in this year?

Bbc merlin, The witcher and Shadowhunter chronicles. Then not posted I also have a couple penny dreadful fics and one bbc Atlantis fic.

Did you write more, less, or roughly what you expected?

A lot less, a LOT lot less to be honest. All of late last year I was pushing out 10k chapters like every 3-7 days for a while but then I hit a burn out. And so I thought I was just gonna write more or get a lot more finished.

What's your favorite story of the year?

It's a three-way tie between "The Ingenuous" "Of Frogs And Knights" and "Battle of Nightmares and Kings" . The first one has become a very personal story for me and the third one was very self-indulgent. As for the second I wrote it within few hours and it was so easy and I had so much fun writing it too!

What's your most under-appreciated fic of the year?

According to hits, "Battle Of Nightmares And Kings". According to Kudos, "We Mist Reinvent Love". Which both stories are centered around Mordred, Daegal, Kara and in the second, Sefa. So I never expected them to get much of anything but I like them and am proud of them so that's all that matters.

Biggest fanfic related dissapointment of 2021

The amount of things I didn't finish. I have over like 20 drafts that are 3/4 or more done and I just need a little bit more to finish them but I can't. Also the longer stories I wanted to complete as well are taking me longer than I expected (and are turning out longer than expected too).

Biggest fanfic related surprise of 2021

I started writing for an old fandom I'd never thought I'd go back to but Merlin grabbed the small child part of me obsessed with Arthurian legend and yanked me back in.

Something you look forward to working on in 2022

Getting The Ingenuous Chapter 2 fricken up!! The word count is at 36,215 words, bringing chapter 2 at about 21k words... I still need to work on it a lot but I've never been so excited for a planned fic or fic series to be put out. Especially because this is the main fic that connects to my dotd rewrite but more importantly my "I defy you stars" series and I have so much planned out for it I'm so excited!
