Zilia Sánchez (CUBA)

An latin american artist whose works was discovered more recently but in the 50's she was doing what we can call a true statement with her works.

Born in Cuba, Zilia start as set designer and abstract painter of the theater radical groups before the cuban revolution in 1953.

She was in the middle of Cuba’s vanguard artists, including The Eleven, a group of young painters and sculptors who share an interest in gestural

abstraction.

"I am an island" - is how she describes herself, also exploring domestic and geopolitical control in her pieces.

The warmth of the silhouettes in her canvases remind us to think about our females bodies and how thei're approached in our society since the past till nowdays.

Is provocative but in a abstract way, with the bodies and the natural world at the same circustance in her experiments with abstraction.

Her technique consistis in stretching canvases over molded wooden armatures, abstracting the traditional support for painted figures and landscapes into epidermal surfaces and topographical shapes, tha allows her to play with the female anatomy and celestial space.

The masculine and the feminine, the personal and the universal, the outside and the inside. Is some the dinamics we can see in Sánchez's works.
