It happens like this: Zayn is sixteen and he gets his soulmark.

Zayn had wondered what his would be. Louis had gotten a large flower on his arm, which he had bitched and moaned about at first until he’d realised that the petals changed colour depending on his soulmate’s mood. Zayn had thought it was kind of sick. He’d imagined his own; leaves climbing up his arms maybe, or large vines wrapped around his chest like his mum’s mark.

Instead he wakes up on the morning of his sixteenth birthday, feeling like he can’t breathe. He pulls his shirt over his head, seeing a large purple, angry looking bruise on his chest. Poking one finger at it, he’s not surprised when it throbs, and he throws himself back onto his pillow, sighing. Day one of having a soulmate, and this is what he’s got to show for it.

It happens like this: Zayn is sixteen and this is only the start of it.

It had started with an Instagram message this time.

Actually, it’d started with a comment, a simple ‘this sounds big already’ with clapping hands, one that Zayn had found easy to reply to with a casual ‘@liampayne appreciate it bro, thanks for the love’ and adding his own emoji. He’d sat and stared at his phone, watched as fans seemed to suddenly appear to like Zayn’s comment and show their excitement in capitals. He’d sat forward on his couch, leg bouncing as he’d chewed on his fingernail and waited for the message or call that was sure to come.

He’d been the one to reach out last time, after all.

It’d only taken Liam five minutes to send through a DM, something that surprised Zayn - he couldn’t remember ever speaking to Liam this way before.

Zaynie! How have you been? New song sounds sick.

And that’s all it had taken.

Or, Zayn and Liam used to be together in One Direction and they've been drawn back to each a handful of times over the last decade. This time though, with Zayn in Paris for Fashion Week, everything feels different.

Liam being bi again, let's not ignore it

On his IG live on 7.8.23, Liam said John Singer Sargent is his favorite artist. Sargent's sexuality is heavily debated; modern interpretations are that he was likely gay - at minimum, much more an admirer of the male figure than the female.

Sargent never married, was intensely private about his personal life. X He was a neighbor to Oscar Wilde and would have been very aware of his trial.

Sargent's paintings are often considered homoerotic or "remarking on the fluidity of human sexuality."

Many of his works are sensual portraits of well-built men in generally feminine poses - arched backs, heads thrown back in passion, etc.

His muse was Thomas Eugene McKellar, a Black bellhop at a posh Boston hotel. Every figure - both women and men - in Sargent's mural at the Boston Museum of Fine Art's rotunda - is McKellar's face - though with his race obscured, and who was paid only a small amount.

He also created many other images of McKellar, one of which he exhibited in his studio his entire life but never showed in an exhibit.

McKellar's family have said they suspected he was gay, and that's why he moved away to Boston.

Some of Sargent's contemporaries remarked about him having many trysts with men when he traveled to Venice and Paris, with a preference for men with darker hair and skin.

Andy Warhol named Sargent as one of his inspirations. Sargent's mural of Hell for the Boston Public Library is thought of as some of his least sensual work - yet when Warhol first saw it, he referred to it as a "gang bang."

On his IG live Liam also read a username that referred to Timothee Chalamet, and before answering the question, he remarked on his attractiveness, twice.

A few days earlier, Liam posted two photos on Instagram of him meeting British artist David Hockney who he called his "inspiration and idol." Hockney is LGBTQ and is known for his intimate portraits of gay domesticity:

It starts with a jumper. It’s not Liam’s favourite jumper, but it’s one of his favourite jumpers, though that might have something to do with the fact that Zayn wore it that one time, after they’d gotten drenched. He’d looked like a drowned rat, his hair plastered against his forehead, shivering despite the hot cocoa that Liam had made them and he’d looked… Liam isn’t sure how to describe it. Sweet? But Zayn is sweet, that’s nothing new. Cuddly? That too is nothing new, not after three years of knowing each other and a year of living together. Though he hadn’t moved in by then, but Liam remembers wanting him to. Seeing Zayn on his couch, jumper paws and all, he’d looked like he belonged.

So yeah, it’s one of Liam’s favourite jumpers, because it’s one of his favourite memories, and so he’s not necessarily upset that it's gone missing, but just a little bit out of sorts. Because he likes wearing that jumper when he’s got exams coming up, something about the inherent comfort of the memory, of Zayn smiling at him, making this little bubble of happiness burst in his chest.

He puts on another jumper and resolves to ask Zayn about it later.
