Now that it's been gifted, I can share the horrible thing I included in @iamtheshriekingguineapig's Christmas gift. 🤣

I was picking up some last-minute items at Menards when I saw these ugly little plastic lantern ornaments on clearance:

(retail site image, they don't look that good in real life)

So I bought one, painted it gold (ultimately had to use a paint Sharpie because nothing else would stick to the PVC), then made burning Zhao Yunlan art in Photoshop, printed it, and stuck it inside. Assembled the whole thing the night before our gift exchange. Put it inside her gift box. Waited for the outraged screaming when she found it.

(I was not disappointed.)

And even though this whole thing is extremely cursed, I'm still claiming it for my @guardianbingo square "holiday," because it IS technically a Christmas ornament. 🎄

It’s hard choosing a top 5 😂 here it is anyway:

1. my heart broke loose on the wind by sarahyyy

Zhao Yunlan and Shen Wei as YouTubers (?) AU where Shen Wei is a Chef and Zhao Yunlan is a random entertainer. He tries a cooking tutorial, and is absolutely obsessed with Shen Wei. This is INCREDIBLY CUTE. Like, you physically cannot stop smiling. You grin the whole fic. Cheeks hurty fic. 6k words. 14/10. 

2. With a Twist of the Kaleidoscope by naye

All of naye’s works are incredible, but this is arguably their best work, and that’s saying something. Angst fest. Shen Wei wakes up manipulated by Ye Zun into thinking Zhao Yunlan is the Bad Guy (tm). Well written, captivating, and A+++ trope. Funnily Shen Wei angsts more inside in this fic hhaha! This is a Classic WeiLan fic. 127k words (wow). 14/10

3. Going Viral by thosch3i

This is the OG Shen Wei wrestling with Technology for online classes fic, featuring a half naked Zhao Yunlan and fat Da Qing HAHA really fluffy! 5.5k words. 14/10.

4. when the light goes out by janonny

Zhao Yunlantern is stuck, burning for 1000 years, and encounters Shen Wei’s reincarnation. Shen Wei, and the rest of the SID, all regain their memories, and they try their hardest to get Zhao Yunlan out of the lantern. Another classic Guardian fic. It isn’t terribly angsty in a good way. 53.53k words haha. 14/10. 

5. The Crimson Lotus by bonibaru

Royalty AU where Shen Wei is the black cloaked envoy, leading an alliance against King Zhao Xinci’s unjust rule, and hides his identity pretending to be Shen Wei a normal and delicate man when he’s arranged to marry to Zhao Xinci’s son, Crown Prince and Chief Commander Zhao Yunlan, who hates the king just as much. The setup is CHEF’S KISS. Beautiful execution. Beautiful plots. Emotional rollercoaster. Well written. The extras are very enjoyable! The character dynamics, the politics, the au,,, I have no words to express how amazing this is. Reading this feels like you’re literally watching a drama, there’s visuals and beautifully descriptive. Very hyped but imo still underrated. it deserves MORE. Exactly 120k words. 14/10!!

I love Zhao Yunlan whump (and Shen Wei emotional angsting), so this fic is a goldmine. ANGST FEST. Really ANGSTY. Ye Zun has Zhao Yunlan chained up in a room (there’s some off screen torture preceeding this) and Shen Wei has to do the unthinkable to free him, exactly what Ye Zun wanted him to do. Zhao Yunlan’s back, all patched up, but it looks like Shen Wei can’t move on. This is a happy ending hahahah dw! 66.6k words haha. 14/10!

- i die each time you look away by sylvandreams

Ongoing fic; I die each time this updates (in a good way). Inspired by the zhao yunlantern fic. This documents Zhao Yunlantern’s pains and waits and inner monologues, him witnessing the births and deaths of the reincanations of the SID crewmates while in eternal burning hell. There’s A LOT of Da Qing and Zhang Shi (immortals) angst. Well written and mindblowingly excellent like this author’s all other works. VERY ANGSTY AND I MEAN IT. I cried during this fic. This is ongoing! 36.4k words at the time of me writing this post. 14/10.

Well, I've gone and done it. The promised Zhao Yunlava story exists. It's four chapters long (first one is up now; others coming soon) and somehow ended up a 16K drama rather than a 5K comedy like I'd planned, buuuut these things happen, I guess... 😅

It also fills my @guardianbingo "Dreams" prompt, which is on a corner so that completes two more lines on my Bingo card! 🎉🎉🎉

“What if it’s not the right decision, returning everyone’s memories? We’re just bringing them more pain.”

Da Qing is surprised to see Zhang Shi hesitate. Then he chides himself again. It’s been fucking centuries and he still expects Zhao Yunlan’s reactions and body language and way of communicating. Cognitive dissonance or whatever.

“You’ve picked up too many bad habits from your master.” Zhang Shi sounds so tired. He sounds as tired as Da Qing feels. 

He opens his mouth just to get interrupted. “I can see it on your face, young one. You’re berating yourself. Blaming yourself. Though I suppose I should expect that kind of egocentrism from a cat.”

“Excuse me??” Da Qing’s eyes fly open, eyebrows high in surprised indignation.

ohhh!!! i get to choose!! let’s see... zhao yunlantern!verse it is (og scene here)

Ye Zun calls his brother when he’s late coming home for dinner. And if Shen Wei is late, it’s for a good reason. How the cell network has been finagled into working in Haixing and Dixing is beyond him, but he’s glad for it. He worries about his brother sometimes.

“I’m sure he’s just talking to a student after the lecture.” Ye Zun says to himself, refusing to let himself panic. His brother is an adult. He can take care of himself. Mostly.

Of late, ever since his proposal for guest lectures at Dixing’s first university was approved, Shen Wei has been more- for lack of a better word- more driven. More intense, more focused. Ye Zun thought it was because he was excited or nervous, or both, about the prospect of teaching in a new environment to a totally different audience. Well, not really that different, Shen Wei would say.

He curses under his breath and gives in, calling Shen Wei. It takes five or six rings for him to pick up, when usually it only takes two or three. Ye Zun programmed a special ringtone in for himself, so there’s no excuse that he didn’t know who was calling.

Shen Wei has been talking to- a lantern? That can’t be right. Dixing is different, and some of their people have powers- he knows this. Just like he knows that one of his new models is a Snake Yashou with truly stunning eyes- but this is his brother! Talking to an unknown magical artifact! Does it even usually talk to anyone else? Was he exposed to some kind of mind altering spell that Dixingren are immune to?

It’s not that Shen Wei can’t take care of himself- it’s just that he doesn’t. There’s always something else on his mind, some cause he’s dedicated himself to- a project or charity event or organizing and overseeing a club for his students. He just never stops, he can’t stop.

It’s like he’s running from something. Or towards something maybe? He needs to have purpose. And as much as Ye Zun tries to get him to take some time off, it never works out as planned. Shen Wei is restless without something to do, someone to help- his mind never stops. Ye Zun is convinced even in his dreams he thinks of future projects and ideas. It would be like Shen Wei to have that drive for purpose rooted deep in his subconscious.

But for now, his brother is coming home. Is going to make them dinner. Shen Wei will make dinner and Ye Zun will talk- about anything and everything. He supposes that’s as good a way to get his ge-ge to wind down as he’s going to get.

At least until plan ‘Get Shen Wei a boyfriend’ can be put into action.
