Introduction

The goal of this blog is to re-translate and re-subtitle the entirety of the Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL anime. I hope to make the new subtitles as accurate and consistent as possible. I’m not a supergenius, though, so if you catch any mistakes, typos, formatting or consistency errors, please feel free to let me know.

I refer to this as a 2023 project, but really I first had the idea for it in 2020 quarantine. Then in 2022, I actually started working on it, took a break from it for a while, then picked it up again about a month ago. And I imagine it'll continue into 2024. But by god, it'll be done someday.

That said, this is largely a solo project. I get occasional translation help from friends, but the actual subtitling and encoding is all done by me. This means releases will be pretty sporadic. I plan to post the episodes in batches whenever I finish a season. (I'm considering a new season to be whenever the theme songs change, here.)

All scripts are translated into English from the Japanese subtitle files located on Kitsunekko. (Except for the previews and some of the ending skits, those I had to figure out by ear.) The raws are from Amazon Japan, taken from a release by Zenthons on Nyaa, who got them from another user they called Shirt. (Sorry, if I knew how better to credit them, I would.) Episode titles are taken from the episode listing Wikipedia page, with occasional minor changes.

Time to answer some questions!

In a contest of pure strength who would win?

Girag. No doubt. If it's just strength Girag would win. Alito could match him using more strategic moves, but if Girag was fighting at top strength he would win.

Who do I NOT want to face in hand-to-hand combat?

Are ya kidding me?! I'm five foot barely one, I have no clue how to fight! I wouldn't want to face anyone in hand to hand combat!

If we're talking a fencing match, it can depend. Girag and Nistro, maybe, maybe not. It depends just whether or not they can move in the fencing stance. Same with Alito, but he's not as heavy and seems more flexible so he might be quicker at fencing, although I MIGHT be able to out-strategize him. MIGHT. He's still stronger and faster which would give him an advantage (I'm working this out under the assumption that these guys have never fenced vs me who has fenced since 2020) but then again the inexperience might advantage me.

I refuse to fence Chris. I love him but he's so much bigger, canonically has abs, and probably can fence better and for longer than I have. Would it be fun? Yes. Would I lose? Yes.

As for everyone else, I could take them due to more experience. I'd want to fence Astral, Rio, and Trey the most :)

Who would I duel?

Mizar. That guy just makes me MAD with his stupid smug face and his random British accent. Also, I have this personal mental rivalry with him simply due to the world duel carnival 3ds game, as I automatically built a deck with dragons because I like dragons, and we had the same cards, and all i could imagine was us squabbling about who stole whose idea

If I stayed out of it, which two would I like to see duel or fight?

Akari and Charlie. I want to see Akari turbo-duel the LIFE outta him. She should have been the one to duel that ducker.

Also I wish we saw Astral and Kite having petty rival squabbles and fights. It would have been funny

And I think it would be very fun to see the big four (Yuma, Shark, Astral, and Kite) in a four person free for all duel over something ridiculous like the last riceball. Bonus if the girls are watching like 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

Also a more serious one would be Eliphas and Don. There would be so much tea spilt it would fill a goddamn lake.

let's see... to answer your question... it's a little bit of a long story, so i'll make a read more! (there is a TLDR at the bottom if you want)

in late 2017, twitch was broadcasting a marathon of Duel Monsters. at that time, my partner, Jamie, was getting really invested into it, since he had mentioned how he liked it when he was younger. for me, i had heard of YGO on TV when i was younger too, but i felt like i couldn't get invested in it, so i never kept track of it. i was vaguely aware of YGO's continued spin-offs, but i never gave it a chance.

so, after a few weeks, his passion about the show and how much he loved Atem made me want to try giving it a shot, too. because of Megumi Ogata's Yugi Mutou, i was interested in starting from the Very Beginning with the Toei season (season 0). i was curious how subbed YGO might be.

so, we watched all of the Toei season together. i came to really love Yugi the most, as he is a very kindhearted protag (my favorite type of protag) as well as Jounouchi and Kaiba. i was surprised at how the story was about our connections with others. i really loved how different it was compared to what i expected or remembered about the series from the past. the focus on games in general as a medium for the story was really good.

i was hooked on it and respected it. i finally understood the appeal. i wanted to jump into Duel Monsters (sub) right away. and we did! we watched it all together, starting in early 2018.

it took several months to watch, and i enjoyed it! i remember feeling shocked and kinda sad that "the shadow realm" wasn't real, lol. i didn't realize it had been a show that was censored like that. we even watched the DSOD movie after. it was really cool... Yugi really is a character i adore!

for about about a year or so after, i was really invested into puzzleshipping. i didn't draw very much at the time because of my severe untreated carpal tunnel though, so there aren't much past works from me, nor did i ever make any ship art.

Jamie got invested into the spin-off YGO and started watching VRAINS while it was airing after seeing a post about Yusaku/Playmaker on here. i gave it a few episodes, and immediately gravitated to liking Ai. but, i was going through a tough time personally and felt a little fatigued (in general) and of YGO because it was such a long series. i didn't think i could do another 150+ anime. so, i dropped it after 3 episodes and did other things for a few years.

he would talk to me about how much he loved how VRAINS was going and about datastormshipping, and i happily listened even though i didn't understand. it was nice to be a support at the time when i felt too tired and stressed to participate. this went on into 2019 as it finished, and well after into 2020. though, it shifted into aiballshipping, but he kept me safe from spoilers.

on a whim, in the middle of 2022, i suggested we watch VRAINS together because i felt up for it again, and i wanted to watch an anime together. i was excited to learn about Ai more, as i saw some vague spoilers here and there about him. i immediately grew to love Yusaku and Ai a whole lot! i was excited every weekend we could watch together. it only took 3 months to watch all 120 episodes because i was that invested. i again felt like a fool for not continuing in the past...

...and you know the rest. it's impacted me a lot. i haven't stopped thinking or talking about them for nearly a year now. i'm even more impacted by their story than the Toei season or DM. i like the characters and story a lot more for VRAINS, so it's my favorite. i even picked up Duel Links because i wanted to learn how to play (i'm kind of bad at it). i'm currently in the middle of ZEXAL now, but i want to check out all the others eventually, too. exciting!

TLDR:

i got into it in 2017 because of my partner's influence. watched season 0, DM, and DSOD and loved it. fell off for personal difficulties in real life and fatigue with long series. picked up VRAINS again in 2022 after dropping it in 2018 after 3 episodes. am now insane (positive) and invested in YGO because it's so fun and good. i'm happy to be here and hope i can be for a long time

Hi, I'm gear, or nose, or literally whatever you'd want to call me! I'm currently 14 and I first got into ygo around 2020 or so through arc v. I started watching zexal first but arc v was definitely my favorite at the beginning - and still is!! I LOVE the counterparts dearly and so most of what I post is about them.. I do all kinds of things, hcs, fanfics, art, cosplay!! I just really love arc v very much so I'm very happy to participate in this :3

I also LOVE the archetypes introduced in arc v, especially melodious so I may post abt them as well!!!

So, Cathy actually enters the first OP of ZEXAL, but in Episode 17, in the first part of the Jin Duel. So she will be present in 9 of the 25 episodes of Season 1, and enter the OP, and main cast 8 episodes after her debut, so about two months.

Cathy is supposed to be the prominent character for this two-parter, though obviously it is overshadowed by Number C3: Utopia Ray's debut also happening here.

This episode is also when Numbers Club becomes an official thing, though it will take until ZEXAL II to be fully formalized.

Jin duel has elements from Malik, and Darkness Fubuki Duels.

This episode is also when Shark, and Kotori interact properly first time.

This two parter was written by Kenichi Yamashita from 5D's, who has written 5 episodes in total for ZEXAL, and would leave the show (and franchise in general) after episode 46. So while this is the first time Yuma's ZEXAL I Party becomes official, becuase it is written by an in-between writer who wouldn't stick around, the character dynamics Shin Yoshida will prefer would not have been established here, and there will be lots of characterization differences from Yoshida's later interpretations of the cast.

Such a shame, since Yamashita's cast dynamic is well established within a short period of time.

Jin's Deck is one of the Deck that appeared in Collection Pack 2020 poll, so we know OCG side will be printing it physically eventually.

Zexal Month 2020 - Week 3 - Day 4 AU Day

After Danganronpa V3 where so many characters reminded me of Zexal characters (Kaito Momota - Kaito Tenjo, Kirumi Tojo - Droite, Kaede Akamatsu - Kotori) this whole thing came to my mind and couldn't shake off the feeling of how perfect they would be in a Danganronpa world, but didn't consider it until a prompt from zexal week. And I am happy to say almost everything is ready in terms of the plotline and the fates of the characters, I just need to write them down and come up with one of the intricate murder myseteries, clues, investigation and trials (by the way I am finished with the chapter 1 now I am just writing it down). Also I've been working on few other stuff like the Closing Argument (the comic thing explaining every step of the murder)

(Probably won't finish this because: 1. Can't draw 3D environments and 2. Takes a lifetime)

And also I've been working on the poster of Chapter 1: Rules of the Labyrinth

And I have to finish only Yuma.
