I also just noticed I never kinda finished up on here with Mechanicum.

Mostly liked it, might have been worth to do another round of edits. Or maybe I just don't like McNeil's writing style. Mechanicum is still better than Fulgrim IMO, mostly because McNeil just managed to bring the humanity in the inhumanity of the Mechanicum out more if it makes sense. Like, sure, the Mechanicum are humans but sometimes I have the impression that the Mechanicum wants to leave what makes us human behind - like feelings, attachment, simple human kindness and so on and having those small moments of humanity is so nice.

Especially when contrasted with the Dark Mechanicum because man, those guy fuck in the bad way. Great!

Dorn's boys in the end had to withdraw and taking as much tech with them as they could because the Dark Mechanicum was too strong at this point and they did not have the numbers. They only were able to save Kane, and they were forced to leave Zeth and Maximal behind who went out with a last "Fuck you" to the Forces of Chaos, destroying their forges and, in Zeth's case, the Akashic Reader which was supossed to reveal humanity's collected knowledge.

So much lives, so much knowledge and so much potential and possibility was lost, just because the greed for power caused some people to throw their morals overboard.

Come to think of it, that is totally not the case today, am I right? No one would do that in real life.

I was surprised that we actually got to see the Void Dragon and how Big E defeated it. Like, maybe it was more allegorical than actually depicted but we saw a version. I do have to look up that part again, because some time stuff there made me go "???" but that's for another time.

And Dalia... is now the Void Dragon's Guardian, together with Rho-mu. That scene smacked so much of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade somehow for me.

● I wanted to address the fact that the main character (MC) of this story is mostly nondescript. While initially, I wanted to do this so more people could (if they wished) insert themselves into MC's shoes, I've come to understand that this choice can make her assumed-white. In my mind, I don't see MC as white, but I know simply stating that outside the story doesn't mean much. I also realize that certain descriptions I might have used lead to a white/lighter skin characterization — like descriptions of MC blushing. Now that the story is finished, I’d like to go back and edit any such descriptions to be more inclusive, but idk when I'll have the energy to said editing. There are other things I'd like to edit (like the werewolf arc), because I don't feel they ended up coming out as well as I intended, but that's another topic.

● I also wanted to clarify that MC isn't necessarily cis or afab. While she is femme presenting, uses she/her pronouns, and I label pairings as "f/__", I don't mean to make her explicitly read as cis/afab. This is a world of magic; so much is possible. Again, I have my own ideas about her, but wanted to leave such details ambiguous for similar reasons as to why I didn't describe her skin tone. And again, this might not have been the best call on my part.

● I am not an expert on kink and bdsm, but unlike other authors (*cough* 50shades *cough*), I DO have some first hand experiences, and also do research before writing things I don't know of well. That said, I still might not write certain bdsm/kink things well; and at times I might play up certain tropes because this is a fun, non-serious, smutty, fantasy series. None of the things I write are meant to be instructional; don't take what I write as perfect examples to replicate. Please do your own research before engaging in bdsm/kink.

Feiseanna: fesh awe nuh *plural of feis *also, I have been informed that the one place where I used the plural in the story, it is technically incorrect & I should’ve used the singular. Currently not corrected in the story, but might get around to it in the future

Autumnalis: awe tum null ees [like geese] *start of Autumn

Autumnal: awe tum null *mid Autumn; aligns with equinox

Brumalis: brew mall ees *start of Winter

Brumal: brew mall *mid Einter; aligns with solstice

I took a few weeks off from my Horus Heresy retrospective to gather my wits after reading Battle for the Abyss and take in some new releases like the Hollow Mountain. Mechanicum, when I read it the first time, single-handedly kept me invested in the series after the one-two punch of Abyss and Descent of Angels nearly caused me to give up on the written word entirely.

The book isn’t without its flaws, chief among them being the uncanny synchronicity of the early Heresy - there’s a lot which had to have occurred prior to the events of the book, much of which is glossed over or paid superficial lip service; like the ecumenical rift between the pro-Unity and Martian secessionist factions of the Mechanicum which is the crux of the narrative.

It’s especially frustrating that while there may very well have been a story to tell about the sound reasons some techpriests may have had for favoring Martian sovereignty over their junior partnership in the Imperium, it’s completely plowed under by the indiscriminately evil corruption of Chaos; so that it doesn’t matter what their original motives were, nor whether they were valid or not, they’re simply all in for primordial annihilation because they’re juiced up on warpstuff.

In spite of the evil computer virus conceit, the story is engaging throughout and went a long way—way back in fifth edition—to flesh (ha!) out a faction that wouldn’t have their own army book for another seven years. Its relative isolation from the wider story and lack of dependence on the preceding books of the Horus Heresy series make it a solid stand-alone read, and Koriel Zeth remains Best Techpriest ten thousand years running.
