It’s #WorldAlbatrossDay! Which means we celebrate these phenomenal birds, but we also have to discuss the threats they face. Albatrosses are the most threatened group of birds in the world. They live a long time (67+ years!) and reproduce slowly (1 chick every 1-2 years once they mature, which can take 10 years from when they fledged), so it’s difficult for their populations to adapt to the accelerate environmental change that humans are causing. They can mistake plastic in the ocean for food. They scavenge from commercial fishing vessels, get hooked, and drown. They have the odds stacked against them but there are amazing people around the world fighting to protect them, to learn more about their lives so we can prevent their extinction. Not a bird! But still very cute. This little New Zealand Sealion pup was curious about all the people gathered at the top of the beach, watching the dramas of the Sandy Bay colony. ⁠⠀ Like albatrosses, sea lions are at risk of fisheries bycatch: being caught in big trawl nets while they're also fishing to feed themselves. There needs to be better systems in place to stop this happening, and we need a Zero Bycatch tolerance in Aotearoa New Zealand. Aotearoa is home to more species of seabird than any other country on earth. I love watching albatross soar in the wake while at sea, but it’s that behaviour that puts them at risk of becoming fisheries by-catch. They’re scavengers that associate ships with food, and every year hundreds of them die as a result, caught on long line hooks or injured by trawl nets. It’s a global problem, and it’s one that every country with pelagic fisheries needs to address - including Aotearoa, which is home to the highest number of seabird species in the world. This morning I gave a talk on the threats to seabirds in Northern Aotearoa at @nzmaritimemuseum as part of a two day seabird conference hosted by the Northern New Zealand Seabird Trust. We've highlighted the fact that while there's a lot of research still to be done to understand what threatens our seabirds, there are cases in which we know the problems and can act now. These guys - takoketai or Black petrel - are the species most threatened by fisheries bycatch in our region, and they breed only on Aotea Great Barrier and Hauturu Little Barrier islands. There's a lot of work being done to prevent bycatch by working with fishers in our region, who would rather catch fish than birds!
