USDA vs FHA - Which Loan Suits You Best?
When it comes to buying a home, financing is often a significant concern. For many prospective homebuyers, securing a mortgage loan is a crucial step in the home-buying process. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) are two government-backed loan programs designed to help individuals achieve their dream of homeownership. In this article, we will explore the key differences between USDA and FHA loans, helping you determine which option suits you best.
USDA Loans
Eligibility Criteria
USDA loans are specifically tailored for homebuyers in rural areas, promoting homeownership in less densely populated regions. To qualify for a USDA loan, both the property and the borrower must meet certain eligibility requirements, including income limits.
Down Payment
One of the most attractive features of USDA loans is the low or zero down payment requirement, making it an ideal choice for those who may not have substantial savings.
Interest Rates
USDA loans often offer competitive interest rates, making them an appealing option for eligible borrowers.
FHA Loans
Eligibility Criteria
FHA loans are more widely accessible, and available to borrowers in both urban and rural areas, making them a popular choice for many homebuyers.
FHA loans have more lenient credit score requirements compared to USDA loans, making them accessible to a broader range of borrowers.
Down Payment
While FHA loans generally have a lower down payment requirement than conventional loans, they still require a down payment, typically around 3.5% of the home's purchase price.
Mortgage Insurance
FHA loans require mortgage insurance throughout the life of the loan, adding an extra cost to borrowers. This is an important factor to consider when evaluating the overall affordability of the loan.
Choosing the Right Loan for You
Location
Consider the location of the property you intend to purchase. If it is in a rural area, a USDA loan might be a suitable option. For urban or suburban areas, an FHA loan may be more appropriate.
Income and Credit Score
Evaluate your income and credit score. If you meet the income criteria for a USDA loan and have a good credit score, it could be a cost-effective choice. FHA loans are more flexible with credit score requirements.
Down Payment Capability
Assess your ability to make a down payment. If you are unable to provide a substantial down payment, a USDA loan might be a better fit due to its low or zero down payment requirement.
Both USDA and FHA loans serve as valuable tools for homebuyers with specific needs and circumstances. By understanding the key differences between these loan programs, you can make an informed decision that aligns with your financial situation and homeownership goals.
Whether it's the rural focus of USDA loans or the broader accessibility of FHA loans, each option offers unique advantages to help you achieve the dream of owning a home.

12.11. 01:11 | Ilo Pisara vs Vesijarven Pallo 2 - 4
Oh, where do I even begin with this sorry display? Let's start with the fact that we had a measly 12 shots on goal. VETOJA HYVÄT HERRAT! That's right, twelve! If shooting was an endangered species, you guys would be conservation heroes for how little you're endangering the net. Teppo Winnipeg, my dear defenseman – you hit more bodies than shots at the net. With just two shots and a defense rating of 85.00? You should've been a wall, but instead, it looks like someone built a bypass around you! And then there’s Macho Fantastico... zero shots on net? Really? What were you doing out there – practicing your figure skating routines or playing hot potato with the puck? Yuri Tarde managed to get five on target; I'll give him that much. He scored both our goals too. But one man does not a team make – unless we're talking about making excuses! Ahti Meli and Jani Saari dishing out assists is nice and all, but what good are assists if they don't translate into something tangible like say... oh I don’t know… wins? Looking back at our recent games: Nachocheeseballs left us cheesy-faced; Omituisten otusten kerho turned us into their personal zoo exhibit; and against Roots Gaming, well let's just say roots grow better without being trampled by victory. This club needs to find its fire again before we become known as 'Ilo Pisara'—the joyous tears of our opponents because facing us has become nothing short of a laughable break from real competition! Shape up or prepare for some creative roster re-arrangements!

I’m sorry in advance. This is a long rant. I think the main reason I can't accept this "SOLDIER!Cloud loves A” thing is because I've always felt that the whole love triangle nonsense was introduced solely to make the players invested in A. Let's face it, the biggest reason people were devastated when she died is because they were invested in her potential romance with Cloud. It was the easiest and cheapest way to make sure the devs achieved their goal. (1/5)
But in their desperation to reach that goal at any cost, the devs ended up damaging other things along the way. Having Tifa in the background until A was out of the picture was such a dumb move. It’s obvious they didn’t want any other character to outshine her. Creating this illusion of Cloud loving A served no purpose in the story. And Aerith herself didn’t bond with anyone save for Cloud. These among many other things. To me, all that wavering thing was so unnecessary to the narrative. (2/5)
Things felt rushed, and A was put on a pedestal and shoved in the players’ faces along with the potential romance with her. It was clear to me that the devs just wanted people to like her so that they’d be devastated when she died. But I guess you can’t ask for too much of games/stories back in 1997. I’m sorry, but I just can’t accept people saying that SOLDIER!Cloud loved A. They hadn’t known each other that long, and 95% of the time, they had other things on their plate than romance. (3/5)
It’s not like they were dating or getting to know each other during the brief time they spent together. Also, I don’t mean to offend anyone, but saying the LTD is now ending because A is stepping out and pushing Cloud onto Tifa sounds so insulting. Like Tifa can’t win unless her competition steps out and hands her the man on a silver platter. This time around, I feel that the devs are trying to do things properly. A is finally taking the time to bond with other characters, especially Tifa. (4/5)
Her world doesn’t revolve around Cloud only anymore. Tifa is not in the background anymore, so now people can get to know her and get attached to her even early on. The romance with Tifa isn’t something that feels like it’s come out of the left field about 2/3 of the way in. There might’ve been hints but they were too subtle. Among many other improvements. Whatever the devs do, I just hope they give us the best version possible of the story this time around. Thanks for listening to my rant.(5/5)
Death to the LTD 1
Death to the LTD 2 (dialogue evolution)
Death to the LTD 3 (soldier Cloud’s acceptance)
Cloud’s hyper vigilance
That would be because the concept absolutely was introduced to make the players more invested in Aerith, so her death had a harder hit when it happened. It was a new thing back in 97 to have a love triangle and pretty much everybody was starting to do it. There’s tons of movies, tv series and books out during that time that showcase the trope.
And having 2 heroines, Aerith and Tifa, and having the hero waver between them, at the time that was something new. ~Kitase, FFVII 10th Anniversary Ultimania pg. 11
I think everyone forgets the difference in technology between FF6 and FF7, not just graphically, but narratively, too. Back then, everything was new and everyone was still trying to find their feet and figure out evolving technology. I mean, it’s still evolving now, but those building blocks that form the base are still the same. Just because there’s now millions of polygons involved doesn’t take away the fact they’re still polygons.
FF7 was Square’s first foray into using more sophisticated methods of game development and that impacted how the story came across. In previous games, the optional content or hidden story arcs that had to be found to be appreciated made the game more fun. The player had to wander around more and talk to everyone to get the full picture and since it worked before, they thought it’d work again. That people would replay and swap party members around to trigger the other scenes and gather the rest of the puzzle pieces for the fuller picture.
But, they forgot they were trying to make everyone love one specific character, which meant the best way to do that was to keep her in the party over everyone else. Which meant people cared less about the others until the point she leaves the party for good. And by that point, when these people replay they just want to spend even more time with her, so they still miss the other dialogues and scenes with other characters that build their storyline alongside this other character they’ve pressed everyone to care about.
And that’s how the LTD got started because they chose not to play the game fully and only focus on one character, they didn’t see the entire picture. And the guides out at the time didn’t help much on that side of things because they didn’t give narrative canon party suggestions so that players got the most out of the story in each location.
Soldier Cloud loved Aerith?
Really? When they’ve been saying for years that soldier Cloud didn’t even exist or that we said he was really Zack and that’s why he’s into Aerith? It’s funny how the moment the devs confirm that real Cloud emerged to embrace Tifa they decided they could claim the dominant persona for their own, even though they also said that it was soldier Cloud who complimented Tifa, despite real Cloud not being the dominant persona. We even see visible evidence of the two aspects at war with each other in the honeybee inn scene before Cloud dances. That eye movement back and forth and expression of “fine, for Tifa” is an internal argument with the two aspects that soldier Cloud isn’t aware enough of to realise that’s what it is. If we take Soldier Cloud as the only personality then there’s no way he’d do that because it’s not cool, and soldier Cloud is always cool. He’s being made to dance because of real Cloud’s desire to rescue Tifa.
Aerith steps out...
Yeah, I wouldn’t phrase it like that, but the overall sentiment is that Aerith is refusing to do what happened in OG.
More importantly, though, and the thing I focused on in my death to the LTD, is Cloud’s behaviour and reaction and feelings. Because he’s soldier Cloud. Real Cloud isn’t part of the LTD because he already chose Tifa. Soldier Cloud is the focus of the LTD because he’s the one who misinterpreted real Cloud’s feelings and focused them on the wrong girl. This time, we see clear evidence throughout all of his interactions that he is also choosing Tifa.
In the train tunnel, while it’s real Cloud’s motivation to protect Tifa, Soldier Cloud is the one who carries out the roll. Then, it’s Soldier Cloud who kisses her cheek, the same as it’s Soldier Cloud who calls her beautiful. Because he’s the one flirting. Real Cloud’s desire is the motivator for him to do it, but it’s Soldier Cloud doing the thing. Same with every single flirty interaction. Real Cloud’s emergence is only confirmed by the devs twice in the game and both times relate to Tifa. Real Cloud’s hand twitches with the urge to comfort her and then real Cloud hugs her.
Everything else is only motivated by his love and desire for her, which means everything else is Soldier Cloud acting on those feelings.
The single moment of wavering from him is literally within the LTD nod scene in the train graveyard when Aerith grabs his arm. He doesn’t react when she does it, stays silent, leans away. He’s not showing her a preference. Then, he looks at and agrees with Tifa, which is showing a clear bias towards her.
Then right before Tifa grabs Cloud’s arm, his eyes start to shift towards Aerith. This is the reference to OG Cloud wavering, but then before he can even look at Aerith, he spots Tifa’s hands in his peripheral vision, gasps, then looks at and smiles at her.
That’s the result of Cloud’s wavering. He chose Tifa. After that, there’s zero LTD scenes and in fact, there’s a humorous shot of Tifa looking towards the camera after Cloud leaps on her to save her from the falling train carriage and Aerith thanks him for saving both of them. He didn’t save both of them. Didn’t even try.
I don’t think there’s gonna be anything to worry about going forward because one thing Nojima learned from letting things be “open for interpretation” is that his work gets butchered.
Since FF7, other FF titles he’s worked on -
FF8: Squall and Rinoa kiss.
FF10: Yuna and Tidus kiss.
FFCC: Aerith and Zack hug
FF13: Snow and Serah kiss and get engaged.
FF15 (when it was originally vs): Noctis and Luna kiss.
If anyone learned their lesson from this LTD mess, it’s Nojima, but he’s been restricted when it comes to 7 by the suits - which is one of the hidden graffiti meta messages in the train tunnel that refers to why Cloti was never made more explicit.
“They tell you to go with the flow so they can keep the status quo.”
Since this is the last of the FF7 compilation the suits have relaxed the reins on the LTD, so that Nojima can write the story as he sees fit, which I would guess is down to the fact they did sales projections and figured out that FF7 would be massively successful and has in fact also boosted sales of PS4 consoles because people specifically bought the console to play FF7R. With the new mysteries and twists to keep fans talking about the game until the next installment is out, they don’t need to hold onto this outdated LTD concept that everyone hates and isn’t anything the company wants to associate with because of how toxic and nasty it is. They’re a Japanese company having to hear these so called fans talking about how Tifa is a “typical Asian girl” or whatever tf they call her. It’s disgusting. Square yeeted the guys behind Genesis because of the controversy around them, so to have fans like this associated with one of their most popular and iconic titles? Yeah, that ain’t happening.

Sweet Like Pudding Ch. 26
Italics - thoughts
The awaited match, for a place as one of the three Tokyo Representatives, is finally happening. Our two teams have made it this far. Their painstaking hard-work and perseverance have garnered such results. Now, they're only two games away until Nationals. The goal is within sight. But first,
Semi-Final Game 1: Fukurodani VS Nekoma
Kanna sat with the rest of the Fukuroudani Cheer Squad, though her seat was quickly vacated in favor of leaning on the railing for a better view. She excitedly waved at both teams as they entered the court. Bursting in laughter at Koutarou's excessive response, who managed to hit Konoha who was passing by and got scolded for doing so.
She turned her head when she heard a familiar voice yell through a megaphone. "Go! Go! Nekoma!"
"Akane-chan's all fired up!" Kanna couldn't help the smile that adorned her face. "So CUTE!"
Not even a second after, another voice was heard cheering with such tenderness. "Good Luck, Levochka!"
Kanna didn't know whether she should cringe, laugh or be impressed. "Ahaha… Arisu-nee...That only works because she's…well…Her. Had it been Kou doing that to me, I would've died from embarrassment."
Looking back down, she made eye-contact with a certain pudding-head fidgeting with the ball. She blinked in surprise, lowering her head slightly, giving a shy wave in his direction. But then broke out in a blush, when she caught his tiny, tiny, discreet smile, before he turned around to line up with the rest of his team.
"What the heck?!WHAT THE HECK?!" Kanna panicked, cupping her reddened cheeks.
*Phwwwhhhhttt!—*
The whistle has been blown, the match has officially begun. She lifts her head in attention, gripping the railing in apprehension.
As she watched, Kanna couldn't help but feel conflicted. This was the match that really tested, and pulled on her heartstrings. She didn't know whether to cheer or to feel disappointed whenever either team scores. She settled instead on being critical, and hoping her cousin doesn't pull an unexpected stunt out of nowhere.
But truthfully, she just really wants all of them to go. So no matter who wins, she hopes that the team who doesn't, would come out victorious in their next game.
*Phwwwhhhhttt!—*
Nekoma 16 : 18 Fukuroudani
After a continuous rally, finally, a break point for Nekoma.
"Everyone's in top condition, I see."
She thought, chuckling at Koutarou's face after being caught by Kuroo and Kenma switching block positions.
When Koutarou's spike was called out, she couldn't help but feel like a shift has occurred.
"Hmm~?" Narrowing her eyes as she hummed, surveying the court.
"Do your best, Levochka!"
Kanna heard Arisu cheer. She turned to see that indeed, Lev was going in due to the rotation.
"Oh Lev's in, let's see if he's improved."
Kanna guffawed at Lev's utterly failed attempts, causing a few people around her to look her way. On the opposite stands, she could see Akane-chan trying to comfort an embarrassed Arisu-nee.
When she finally caught her breath, she turned back to look down at the court, only to see Kenma scolding Lev with a really scary expression on his face.
Kanna shivered and lit a candle in her heart for him. "Lev, you will be remembered."
Though as the game progressed, he did manage to get a hit in. That is, before he botched his serve, ending the set in Fukuroudani's win.
The second set was going great. Neither team was letting up on their attacks and receives. And just when she thought nothing major was going to happen.
Bokuto's Weakness #37: If he becomes too fixated/If he excels on one thing, he'll completely forget how to do anything else.
Kanna groaned in shame, collapsing behind the railing and hiding her face from second-hand embarrassment, as she heard the team call for a time-out.
"Ugh, Why~~~ Just, whhhyyy~~~~"
After a few minutes of recollecting herself, she let out a breath as she straightened. Looking down once again, she took a glance at the Nekoma bench.
"You sure got him good, Ken-kun." She thought fondly, resting her head on her arms over the railing, trying to hide her smile, as she admired the play-out of his tactics from his earlier observations.
Tearing her eyes away, she studies the rest of the Fukuroudani team huddled together in a heated discussion. Her gaze zeroes in on one particular person.
"Now, how are you going to put him back in order, Keiji?"
Currently, Nekoma was two points ahead. Considering Fukuroudani's current dilemma—in the name of their Ace—Kanna thought they would need some time to recollect themselves, and thus proceed to do what they did at the training camp. So you can imagine her surprise at the following events.
"Hm~?" Kanna hums curiously, taking notice of Akaashi's unnatural movements, and then proceeding to burst out in chuckles at Lev's reaction to his switch. "Hahaha, he got him."
She refocused as Akaashi tossed the ball towards Koutarou, who was ready and in position to attack. She watched as he spiked a cross directly into Yaku, who managed to receive it, but wasn't able to direct the path of the ball due to Koutarou's power.
Seeing Koutarou's shift in mood, she couldn't help but sigh in ponder. "Haahh~ He actually managed to get him out of it. I wasn't expecting it to be this quickly. Damn Keiji, how much cooler can you get?!"
From then on, Fukuroudani steadily caught up. But for every point gained, Nekoma would counter just the same. The intensity of the game could be felt throughout the gym, both team's cheering squads were up and doing their best to encourage and send their support.
And as the tensions continued to rise, Koutarou—out of nowhere—delivers an astonishingly tight cross shot that managed to land 'right in front of the attack line'.
"Oh~ What a beauty." Kanna couldn't help but gush.
Fukuroudani was now at their match point, but Nekoma wasn't planning on just letting it end like that. Both teams continued to push through, not letting up for even a second. Tiredness and fatigue couldn't even deter them from their goal. They just couldn't afford for the ball to land on their side of the court. But alas, end it they must.
After a continuous rally, Fukuroudani has once again nabbed their match point.
Nekoma 28 : 29 Fukuroudani
The ball has been set. Koutarou ran, each step with a purpose. He jumped, never taking his eyes off of the ball. He lifted his hand, tensing, and launched yet another incredible cross shot. The sound of the ball colliding with the floor boomed loudly, stunning the crowd into silence.
*Phwwwhhhhttt!—*
And with that, the match ends.
Set Count 2 : 0 — Winner: Fukuroudani Academy —has now secured a spot as a representative for the Spring High Volleyball Tournament.—
While the teams exchanged greetings and handshakes, Kanna sprinted down the stairs to meet the guys outside. When the boys exited the doors, Akaashi was the first to notice her. But before either of them could say anything, a loud voice bellowed.
"KANNAAAAAA-CHAAAAN~!" Koutarou barreled through the group, heading straight for her with his arms wide open.
"Wait! Wait—" Kanna pleaded, holding out her hands in a 'stop' motion.
"Bokuto-san, please—" Akaashi tried to interfere, but was promptly ignored.
"Did you see my awesome, awesome, incredible, cross shot?!" Koutarou urged, inching closer and closer to her.
But before he could pounce on her, he got pulled back by the collar, courtesy of Konoha—ever-the-saviour. Kanna sighed in relief and shot him a thankful nod, of which he returned.
After some minor struggling, Koutarou finally gave up and just let himself be held. He turned his attention back at Kanna, as he continued.
"SO, DID YOU?!"
"I did," She confirmed, and despite knowing it might make his head grow larger, she still couldn't help but compliment. "You were really cool Kou-nii."
Koutarou vibrated with barely contained excitement, whopping in glee at her praise. Meanwhile, the rest of the guys watched the scene smiling and laughing along.
Kanna smiled back at them proudly. "Great game, you guys! I better leave you to rest now before your next games. Good luck!"
"Right then, off you all go!" The coaches exclaimed, ushering their respective teams along.
"But I didn't get a hug yet~!" Koutarou grumbles, once again, attempting to reach for Kanna.
"You're covered in sweat! Change first, you big idiot!" Komi chides, pushing him from behind as he's dragged along by Washio and Sarukui. All three of them pointedly ignoring Koutarou's whining, as they waved back at Kanna.
"We'll see you later!"
—~~~——~~~——~~~——~~~——~~~——~~~——~~~—
Kenma sighed as he left Kuroo to deal with a brooding Lev. He nodded back at the others in a circle on the floor, as he took a sandwich from the food pile. Sandwich in hand, he made his way down a few corridors filled with people, before he arrived at a relatively quiet area. He approached the bench and sat down. Opening the wrapping, he took a bite, leisurely chewing as he listened to the humming of the person beside him.
After a while, he crumpled up the wrapping and stood up to throw it to the nearest trash bin. Sitting back down, Kanna handed him a bottle of water, which he took with a grateful nod. Seeing as he'd forgotten to take one before coming.
Kanna waited a few, before speaking.
"Nervous?" She asked, inclining her head to the side as she looked at him.
"Not particularly." Kenma answered as he fiddled with the bottle.
"But you want to win, right?" Kanna gazed at him with a smile. Despite not outwardly showing it, it was clear that he desired to. He could be quite competitive when he wants to be, especially if there's an outside factor edging him on.
Kenma stilled, thinking back to Hinata's text, and their challenge to one another. "Yeah. Yeah, I do." He answered, looking back at her.
Kanna's eyes sparkled, as her smile got brighter seeing the tiny smile he rarely showed. All while willing her face to calm.
"Gosh, Ken-kun~ If you keep doing that, I'm going to melt!"
Voices from down the hall broke the comfortable silence surrounding the two. Kanna glanced towards it, before looking back at Kenma.
"Aren't you supposed to go? They should be looking for you." She voiced, genuinely worried for him.
"It's fine. There's still time." He calmly answers.
Minutes pass, and he finally rises from the bench, holding out his hand for her to take. Kanna looks down at it, and then up at him in question. After hesitating for a few seconds, she places her hand in his and stands.
Kanna thought he'd let go of her hand right after, but he proceeded to take hold, and guide her back along with him. Her eyes widened in realization, face blooming a blaring crimson, as her heart thundered in her chest.
"Aaaahhhh! What?! WHAT?!"
Meanwhile, Kenma buried his face in the collar of his jersey jacket to hide his equally flushed face, as he threw the bottle in his other hand when they passed by the bin.
"What am I doing? What was I thinking?!"
But neither of the two made a move to release the other. They only broke apart—albeit a little hesitantly— when they reached the corner leading to where the rest of the Nekoma team would be.
Kanna wished him luck before he turned the corner, leaving her where she is. Walking away she could hear the voices of the team calling out to him.
"There you are!" -Yaku
"Kenma! Hurry, come on!" -Yamamoto
"Where were you?" -Kuroo
"Nowhere." -Kenma
Kanna giggled as she skipped down the hall, not paying any mind to the stares she got. How could she, when something incredible just happened.
Notes:
Ahhh! ! ! Who else is dying from the overload of fluff up in here?!

Castlevania Season 3 was disappointing
(Spoilers for Castlevania Season 3, if you haven’t seen it yet it’s out now on Netflix. I suggest watching that first before reading this review)
I won’t say it was an awful season by any stretch of the imagination but man was it a drag to get through.
Almost nothing of significance happens for the majority of the season and the things that did happen felt extremely off and weird. 10 episodes, 25 to 30 minutes each, and every single one except for the fucking TWO LAST EPISODES were spent dicking around with a mystery that had little to do with anything from season 2 beyond a really out there twist that I’m sort of iffy on. Top that off with a lackluster arguably stupid ending to leave us off on a needless cliffhanger, and that’s the magic remedy that will leave me feeling pretty damn frustrated.
The best parts, in my opinion, were with Isaac’s massive undead crusade he was waging throughout his journey for revenge, and Trevor and Syph’s interactions with each other as well as with the little villagers. Isaac’s arc going from a servant of Dracula to slowing evolving into the master of the damned felt genuine, intriguing, and badass! I really wish he was the next main villain instead as it makes sense thematically. He carries out Dracula’s nihilistic views of humanity in a similar but now more direct way and that can lead into something really intriguing. However, for some reason, this season left him and his whole journey on a back burner, and virtually everything else that is implemented into main villain role fell flat on its face execution wise.
For example; The new vampires of this season are Camilla’s three other empress sisters, and while they do have a plethora of personality at the very least, that kind of comes at a cost of the main threat being extremely diluted. We go from this hurting sympathetic undead overlord with the power of an anchent GOD, to a couple of wicked sassy sisters who just wanna eat people forever? It’s a bit lame of a progression from what we once had, we know Vampires like to eat people that’s nothing new or exciting. There’s no real twist to it besides it being “led by women in the dark ages” and granted that makes sense here since it IS the dark ages, but come on we literally just had arguably the BEST adaptation of friggin’ Dracula! This shouldn’t be all they got moving forward from that.
Now, I have ZERO issue with the main antagonists being female or even two of the four sisters (not by blood don’t worry) being a lesbian couple. I hate that I have to emphasize this, hell I often defend Cinder Fall in RWBY more than anyone in the fandom at all despite her issues as a complex and sometimes flat out badly written character. However, The four of them in this season have the most basic of plans that it seems arbitrary status quote fluff at best. It felt like just because it’s Castlevania, we HAVE to have the vampires as the villains. Even though in the games the Belmont’s were literally fighting werewolves, dragons, skeletons, and the GRIMM REAPER??
Therefore, the sense of urgency and tense calculating plans of ‘survival vs extinction’ is completely gone. And yknow in a way, I can kinda initially SEE that working in a sort of “Empire Strikes Back” esque plot. Yknow, with Alucard and the gang go around cleaning up Dracula’s leftover horde only for Isaac or even Camilla to have this huge vengeful comeback of dominance? But there’s no one exactly “striking back” or even taking any kind of immediate initiative after Dracula’s death. It’s been MONTHS after the whole event and no one seems like they really care about that world changing event from the last two season’s. Everything is fine and dandy, no one has a single worry in the world! How enthralling...I miss Godbrand 😑
Besides the plan the four empresses have as well as Issac’s revenge, which I hope will both be more explored in season 4, no one really has any goal to warrant THAT kind of length of a season. This is more of a Netflix problem that I have with most of their shows and it’s one of the reasons why I don’t like watching them. Almost every singe show Netflix produces now, feels the need to overstuff itself with needless filler that gets us really nowhere until the very end where it SUDDENLY all comes together. But because of the nature of binge watching and considering how Netflix wants to desperately keep their subscriptions in fear of intimidating competition, they make these shows 12 episodes long with HALF HOUR OR MORE amount of filler content that’s supposed to satisfy us cause it’s “cute”?! No, stop this shit! Granted, Castlevania wasn’t nearly AS bad as the live action shows, but honestly, what exactly was shown to us that couldn’t have been reduced to like 5 solidly paced episodes focused on one or two plot lines ONLY like before? It worked perfectly back then, why change what ain’t broke?
As much as I don’t like the immediate rush of Trevor and Syph’s out of nowhere sexual relationship, I didn’t overall mind it too much since they still somewhat felt consistent. Their characteristics play off very nicely with one another and it’s pretty easy to see the chemistry between the two....HOWEVER I’M STILL GONNA COMPLAIN ABOUT IT SO HERE WE GO!
I get that they were setting them up as an endgame ship of the series, there’s no denying that, but they start fucking for what feels like (to the audience) two days after and I think that’s a bit ridiculous! Even if Alucard states that it’s been at the very least a month worth of time since the events of Season 2, there’s no real physical signs showing that statement to be true. Hell, Trevor’s beard and hair remains the same despite a HUGE passage of time where it would naturally grow out to indicate said time passing by. But both him, Syph, Alucard, and damn near everyone else looks the exact same as last season. So for all I know it could have been like a week since Season 2 and that to me doesn’t feel exactly earned. The Season 2 finale didn’t explicitly leave off Trevor and Syph officially a couple, they felt more like partners in crime more than anything else. Not to say that there wasn’t any chemistry there to develope INTO a relationship GRADUALLY, but going from a little spark of interest to the immediate jump of them sleeping together naked all comfortably as if they’re a goddamn married couple is a STRETCH! Even Trevor himself thinks so too so don’t jump down my throat about not being immediately swooned by the shipping fanservice given to us. I don’t dislike them as a couple at all, in fact I think their dynamic is cute! However, I would have also liked to have this couple feel natural and earned. They most certainly do not feel earned this way, at least to me.
Oh god, then there’s this out of nowhere sexual tension between Alucard and his new two recruits from another region hinted at in the previous season? Mind you, Alucard was doing literally NOTHING throughout the entirety of Season 3. Yep, literally the ONE DUDE WHO BASICALLY KILLED DRACULA gets about fuck all story progression afterwards out of the three. But what they DO give him are these two new vampire hunting student’s who look identical to one another (no racial they just literally look like fraternal twins) so I assumed they were either siblings or a couple, which makes it REALLY WEIRD WHEN THEY BOTH FUCK ALUCARD OUT OF NOWHERE?! I’m NOT making this shit up I promise! What makes even less sense is that it was really just a ploy for them to steal the Belmont knowledge of killing vampires to show to their people who have been enslaved. Which of course ends with them being killed so it really makes this entire conflict in his character damn near pointless besides “sad vibes check”, but here’s the thing...why didn’t they just keep doing training with Alucard?? There were virtually no downsides to having him teach you how to kill Vampires to save your village from being enslaved, he was teaching you both very well and gave you like the eternal knowledge of how to kill literally EVERY MONSTER and even let you live in the castle FOR FREE, food and wine included! What was the turning point for them to want to kill him all of the sudden? Cause he’s a vampire?? THEY FUCKING KNEW THAT ALREADY!!! Why was is suddenly not a problem at first but then coincidentally a problem now? If they wanted to use this to somehow depict this notion of “Oh my dad/Dracula was right humans are the worst” mindset, trust me, it was better conveyed with Isaac. These twins side plot not only made no sense, but also felt unjustified for Alucard to be an emo boi. I get that it’s supposed to be symbolic of him going through the same issues that both of his parents went through, but none of that really showed how bad human’s are. Just that those two twins didn’t think things through apparently. So the point of Alucard having this odd character convenience shift feels by the numbers cliché, and most importantly CHEAP.
It really makes no sense to me why they’re adding so much of this filler for such a long time, especially with some of this filler being oddly sexual. I don’t mind honest depiction of sex between consenting adults of course, but it just felt so misplaced and awkward at parts where it showed itself. I felt like I was reading a mediocre fanfic of Castlevania instead of the actual show itself! Granted, Season 2 had somewhat of a similar dilemma but the lull in between was still showing the character specifically doing things to further the story along. Towards the end, it gave us a way more satisfactory closure of that saga with Dracula that felt natural and well earned. This season however, felt like they were scrambling with different ideas here and there and didn’t know which to go with. Alucard training new recruits in his castle, Trevor and Syph figuring out an estranged (and BORING/GENERIC) cult of Dracula’s plan, Camilla setting up an army with her fellow sisterhood of evil vampires to gain ultimate power, Hector surviving captivity by using his wit and charm, Isaac raising up the dead for revenge on his deceased master, a new character introducing an all new world to the lore of Castlevania as we know it, all of these interesting concepts and ideas that could easily make up for a good season alone! And instead of focusing on one or two ideas to develope into something natural, they ended up saying “FUCK IT! Fucking I dunno what to- WE’RE DOING ALL OF IT I DUNNO!” and mixed the whole thing in a blender of different flavors that don’t necessarily blend together well enough for a tasty satisfactory meal. It just ends up being a mesh of okay at best, and gross at worst.
IN CONCLUSION, Castlevania Season 3 had a rocky start, an okay middle, and a kind of cool end. There was definitely some cool and exciting ideas implemented in here, but not enough to warrant that lengthy amount of time that Netflix seems to love to give to most of their TV shows. Sometimes less is more, and all that shiny cool glitter isn’t necessarily going to turn out to be gold. I’ll give this season a 5/10. It’s not the worst I’ve ever seen but it certainly could’ve been a lot better.
P.S. “Who Do Ya Voodoo” from Dead Island is Isaac’s new theme song, you can’t convince me otherwise.

Reviewing the All Elite Wrestling personnel (Part 3)

Tag Wrestlers to get Singles Run -
Remember FTR recently put in rules about facing them in tag-team matches? Essentially this rule is added whereby when FTR beats a team in "A Brush With Greatness" they can no longer be a team until a year has passed. The idea is one dismantled team would then reunite, better from their singles run, and finally defeat FTR. This also allows AEW to make new break-out stars instead of being seen as nothing but a tag-team promotion with everything else tacked on.
Do me a favour - search up 'pro wrestlers' on google. Most, if not all, are WWE guys. The first one who is an AEW talent after Jericho but before Cody and Kenny comes up? Dustin Rhodes. We're about to celebrate 30 years of Chris Jericho as a mainstay in wrestling. Funny - where was Dustin's 30th? A guy many wrote off, including myself, is now better than ever. A World Champion run, even if short, would be long overdue. If not maybe Nick Aldis would be kind enough. Was for Cody.
Here's a guy who is getting the shaft for absolutely zero reason other than the fact he's not someone else. Yeah I'm talking about Scorpio Sky - people think Scorpio Sky is some amazing talent, some future AEW World Champion, when I don't see it. I even considered Scorpio Sky for Release until I realise he's not truly bad it's just he's not Kazarian. He's crisp, solid, and good all-round. He's not a terrible promo either - so what's lacking? He's the real deal.
A diamond in the rough which needs to be carefully extracted from Private Party. Isiah Kassidy isn't all too bad but his inexperience to understand ring psychology will hurt him and Marq Quen has proven he has all the tools to go along. The real question is when to break them up? Is Marq Quen really ready? I think there's been evidence in singles, even a TNT Title shot, he's definately capable of getting the chance to elevate. A rising star people seem to be sleeping on.
Ah Santana. He's a bit like D'Lo Brown - mired in midcard because he's too selfless to accept his own stardom and convinces there's enough for him to be happy where he is. Maybe Santana has a chip on his shoulder and its name is Ortiz. Santana can do a lot more and people can take him seriously. There's a story they can play regarding the break-up of the Inner Circle and if anyone should feud with his former allies it's Santana. Make him babyface and give him the push.
There's an ongoing story with The Dark Order and how it seems Evil Uno and Mr. Brodie Lee are taking different perspectives on the goals of this faction. I think it'd make more sense for Stu Grayson to be fed up with the weakness of all of them and go alone to prove if the strongest are to survive then he will be the strongest - a man who challenges the big guys in AEW and isn't shortchanged by the experience either - a lot better than people give credit.
I've been awaiting this one so let me indulge. Part of the reason I started this entire list was for Trent but I had to weigh up his matches and situation. He had a great 19 min contest against Kenny Omega which confirmed just how good he really is but it was the parking lot brawl which cemented it in the eyes of everyone. Let's be very clear - he bled for the match. His partner Chuck Taylor wouldn't and in fact if it was just Santana Vs Trent it would of made for a better match overall. Trent must be frustrated how Orange Cassidy has elevated himself as he languishes in a tag-team designed to make him look effeminate. I remember years ago him and Brian Cage were prospects. What happened? Best Friends happened. The double-cross needs to happen. Heel Trent and give him back the Beretta between his legs. Look up Roppongi Vice. Does Trent really have to leave AEW and go back to NJPW too? Trent needs to go singles RIGHT NOW.
Didn't expect this right? I said before I can't get rid of them in AEW so I'll do the most logical thing - break them up. But why Nick and not Matt? Because Nick is the one who has a brighter future pure and simple - Matt is a egomaniac who is pulling his brother and the whole division into a circus of acrobatics and gymnastics. He keeps things from turning into mainstream appeal and caters to a cult of fanboys. Nick has proven, with Rey Fenix, to be very astute in this high-flying style without coming off as pretentiously choreographed and remains competitive rather than a forgone conclusion. Nick's good. Matt wouldn't understand how to do what's best for business which is why he's got to dedicate to never putting others over, not even his own brother, and it's killing the business oh wait they wrote about this har har very good. Nick can be something.
I've soured a bit on Jungle Boy. When he was facing MJF it's beautiful chemistry between the two - a classic face vs heel formula. His by-the-numbers tag matches with the Jurassic Express? Pitiful. He does an overtly flamboyant arm drag, slaps to the chest, dives, more of this high-flying, and ends up being the 'Wild Buck' not his own person. He needs to slow it down, pace himself, and make every move meaningful - and he has to find those answers on his own.
The Hybrid 2 have been a disasterous tag team despite their obvious talent. It's evident them breaking up would be good for both of them so I elect they both get the singles push, maybe against each other, but definately against anyone who can keep up with them which is few and far between. Jack Evans has been doing this longer than most, 20 years in fact, and yet he gets so little respect. He's sometimes sloppy but hey it works. Imagine his insanity with Eddie Kingston...
The Hybrid 2 have...oh wait deja-vu. Angelico is unique as he's a submission specialist. It works - it's the most contrasting style to a high-flyer - a technician (or técnico if you feel fancy) and he's also from the glory days of Lucha Underground where he made the most incredible dives. I think he's special enough - this is what Orange Cassidy WISHES he could be. Let's wrap this one up on a high note and nobody gets higher than Angelico.

Parallels, Parallels, Parallels
[We got a double hitter, fellas. For the sake of courtesy, you may want to leave if you don't like Bakugo bashing. Just a fair warning.]
Part 1: Kacchan and Deku
Like it or not, Horikoshi made it his mission to make sure that his protagonist Izuku and Katsuki had heaps of parallels.
For the most part, it's really prominent.
Katsuki acts as a foil for Izuku. He was born with a powerful quirk, Izuku was quirkless. He's loudmouthed and abrasive, Izuku's softspoken and understanding. He has no inate will to help people by default, Izuku will leap to the defense of an innocent person before he can think. The list goes on.
The best way it's highlighted is during the U.A. Entrance Exam: Katsuki gets in on only Villain Points. Izuku gets in on only Rescue Points.
On another note, Izuku and Katsuki both represent various aspects of luck and work. All Might once said something along the lines of "There are those who gain power through luck, and those who work to earn power. Know the difference." This fits some of the more prominent characteristics of Izuku and Katsuki.
Katsuki's Explosion quirk is essentially a very big play of luck. That's not to say he doesn't work hard, but the work he does accomplish is more for maintaining his high position, and less about going further beyond. Izuku is different. Getting One for All was incredibly lucky, but the work Izuku had to put in to obtain and control the quirk was definitely not just luck. He cleaned and entire beach just to get the quirk, and as of now, he only recently learned to control 8% of OFA, as well as 20% in short bursts and 100% without reprocussions when a small child is connected to him and actively reversing the damage. And said small child's quirk is a freak mutation, so someone has to stop her quirk to make sure Izuku isn't erased from existance when he isn't actively on the bone hurting juice.
Which brings me to my next point: going beyond.
There are only three major instances where we see Katsuki seriously push his limits (no, Howitzer Impact doesn't count because:
It's a super move.
By itself, it doesn't really result in major reprocussions.)
The first time we ever see something close to Katsuki reaching his limit is during the infamous Katsuki vs Ochako fight at the Sports Festival. Katsuki manages to pull off a gigantic explosion seemingly out of his ass, defeating Ochako and her well thought out plan at the cost of his arms starting to experience strain. The second instance is during the final exams, where Katsuki is trying (and failing) to take down All Might, even blasting past his gauntlets' safety precautions and going so far as to try and bite All Might's hand when he's out of stamina. The third notable occasion is at I-Island, where he pushes past his already reached limits in order to help take down the powered up Wolfram.
With the potential exception of the third example, there's nothing all that special about him pushing past his limits.
His motivation is just that he wants to win, end of story. He wanted to beat Ochako? BOOM, big explosion. He wanted to beat All Might? BOOM, big explosions, but he still fails (remember that the only reason he passed is because Izuku is selfless and came back for his sorry behind). I-Island is more of the same, but in that instance he's working towards a team goal, AND he's rooting for All Might, so admittably the circumstances are different.
So how does Izuku going beyond differ from Katsuki?
Well, unlike most shonen anime, when Izuku goes beyond, there are actual consequences. Izuku tries to save Katsuki from the sludge villain? Izuku gets scolded for being reckless (even though the Pros were just standing there, using quirks as an excuse while Katsuki was going trigger happy trying to free himself, and yet he gets praise). Izuku saves Ochako from the Zero Pointer? He breaks his legs and an arm, though he thankfully avoids being turned into a bloody pulp. Izuku tries to save Shoto from himself? He ends up permanently disfiguring his hand after he decides to go all out against Shoto, and eventually gets the incentive to learn what would later become Full Cowl. He wants to save Kota from Muscular? He screws his arms up so bad that he can no longer use them at full power unless he wants them to stop working altogether. The thing about Izuku going beyond is, aside from gaining consequences, he also gains something from the experience.
He got All Might's attention during the Sludge Villain Incident. Ochako saved him after saving her from the Zero Pointer, allowing both of them to pass and eventually leading up to Ochako becoming a close friend of Izuku. Shoto accepted his fire side, and Izuku eventually learned Full Cowl in order to stop breaking his bones as frequently. Kota stops hating heroes, and Izuku eventually teaches himself Shoot Style.
What does Katsuki get from his experiences? "Be stronger."
Which is terrible advice for someone in his position; the proper advice would be to "Be smarter." He should have lost his fight with Ochako and realized that big explosions won't always fix his problems. He should have fought All Might and realized halfway that defeating him would have been impossible, and thus (even reluctantly) decide to cooperate with Izuku. The I-Island incident is the only exception I'll give him, simply because his reasons for going beyond were slightly more noble than normal. And before you bring up Katsuki's quirk's limitations, remember that we didn't see those again until he was fighting ALL MIGHT, WITH HIS GEAR ON. He would have been toast sooner if he didn't have his gauntlets.
But hey, that's my personal opinion. What do I know?
Part 2: King Explosion Murder and Endeavor
Stop me if you've heard this one before: If Izuku equals All Might, then Katsuki equals Endeavor.
Unfortunately, that comparison isn't too far off.
Both of them are egotistical manics looking to surpass All Might (and in Katsuki's case, also Izuku) with powerful quirks and prominent positions of power. They also both have a tendency to use people to meet their own ends. Katsuki didn't give a crap about his fellow teammates during the Cavalry Battle, going off on his own multiple times and not even bothering to recall their names. In the manga, Mina even stated that Katsuki only picked her to counter Shoto's ice when the Cavalry Battle is over, and its been stated that Eijiro only got aboard Katsuki's team because he brought up "taking down Midoriya." This sounds awfully similar to Endeavor (or Enji Todoroki) using his wife Rei in order to "create" a perfect heir (Shoto) in order to surpass All Might.
They're also both sore winners. Shoto lost to Katsuki in the final round of the Sports Festival, and Katsuki has to be chained up because he refuses to accept the victory. Meanwhile, later in the series, Endeavor rages when he's given the position of Number One Hero because he's seen All Might's true form, and suddenly everything he's worked for is for naught, at least in his eyes. Katsuki and Enjialso tendend to be assholes to certain people in particular. Katsuki was (and still is) an asshole to Izuku because he was quirkless and therefore useless (and maybe to some extent, Katsuki feared Izuku's innate heroic nature, so he tried knocking him down to avoid future competition, even if, by Katsuki's words, Izuku wouldn't be competition because he didn't even have a crappy quirk). Endeavor was an asshole to Shoto, sending him through brutal training that no four year old should be subjected to, isolating him from the rest of his family, and driving his mother to insanity, leading to his iconic burn mark on his left side.
What really gets me infuriated about the both of them is how Horikoshi tries to parallel them with actually decent human beings, usually through their redemption arcs.
Katsuki has been compared to Izuku by All Might himself, stating that the two of them are both sides to the same coin: the saving hero, and the winning hero. This comparison would be fair IF Izuku wasn't already learning to be a winning hero (and being a saving hero by default) while Katsuki has yet to show a desire to save beyond his desire to win.
Meanwhile, Endeavor gets parallels to Shoto. "Earlyroki," as Shoto was often referred to by his peers after he opened up, was an ironic reflection of his father, only relying on his ice power in a nearly condescending manner, and also adopting his father's lone wolf attitude. Then there's the whole deal with Endeavor getting a scar on his left side to match Shoto. There's no being subtle with the symbolism.
Although, and this is an unpopular opinion, I do like some aspects of Katsuki and Enji's redemption arcs. For Enji, we're shown that even if he's seemingly willing to change his ways, not every person has to accept his attempt at reconnection. A bad person can turn a new leaf and people are allowed to still not trust them. We don't see this in Katsuki's redemption arc, since everyone is somehow in unanimous agreement that Katsuki didn't do anything seriously wrong. Even though he did. And that's infuriating, specifically for me. What Katsuki's arc IS doing right, is that he actually has the potential to change. He may have abused Izuku for well over a decade, but he's still a kid; he still has time to change, and the changes are starting to form, however subtle they may be. I wish they were less flip floppy in progress and that people in the fandom and in the series weren't exaggerating it so much, but we can't have everything. At least he's better than episode one Katsuki by a notable margin. Meanwhile, Endeavor's been stuck in his ways since he married Rei. He can still change, but his habits will be harder to remove since he didn't learn early on enough that his actions weren't exactly moral.
Well, that's my two cents. If you read it, hope you enjoyed.

MEGGY’S DESTINY REVIEW
With an epic journey and the tragic loss of a possible friend if such events didn’t unfold under her belt, our favorite squid humanoid (minus the squid part) fulfills a promise to her long-gone rival in this coming-of-age YouTube video which is not only a feature short-film but a step forward for this family of mentally-challenged paisanos. Howdy everyone, SuperWarrior here and welcome to this review of SMG4’s first ever movie (or special extended episode depending how you look at it), “Meggy’s Destiny”. Let’s just say we are in for a TREAT today, and before we begin I must advise you: This review is SPOILER-HEAVY, so if you haven’t seen this movie yet GO WATCH IT then come back here once you’re DONE. I’m already throwing this out there, I HIGHLY recommend watching this video if you’re an SMG4 fan or very interested in these kinds of stories. Are you done? Well then grab your Ink Bois and buckle-up, you’re in for a RIDE.
「昨年は大変でした」 “Last Year Was Rough”
To start off the synopsis, our adventure begins with Meggy resting in her bed telling us her backstory on how she was introduced into the SMG4 universe, met Mario for the first time, and reminiscing the dozens of journeys they and her new friends went on together. But her past year came with a price. All thanks to the SMG4 gang’s anime-related hijinks, a spiraling lead of events caused the casualty of Meggy’s bitter rival, Desti. When the two cephalopods were held captive at Francis’s Ink Prison, she discovered her enemy never truly despised her at all and was only looking forward to her humiliation when it came to competition. During the octo’s funeral, Meggy in her new form vows to finally win a Splatfest tournament in her honor. Just imagine if Desti was a much bigger character, Final Hours would’ve had an even bigger impact on the series than it already left. Months have passed since the group’s biggest misadventure yet and the final tournament is right around the corner.
「マルーナーズベイで相手を守れ!」“Keep Opponents at Marooner’s Bay!”
It’s the next day and the Splatsquad is finishing up training for tomorrow. Mario, Luigi, Meggy, and Tari are about to hone their Turf War skills one last time with the rest of the SMG4 group cheering them on in the bleachers. The team successfully completes their exercise as their friends congratulate and wish them luck for the big day. Professor E. Gadd suggests if they want to be victorious, they’ll have to use his latest inventions or as he calls them Ink Bois to even the score since none of them can hide in and slide across ink. Meggy gets a surfboard, Luigi uses a roller chair, Tari obtains a keyboard, and Mario owns a… lawnmower. Meggy refuses to use her gadget because of her pride and confidence, claiming that the advantage is personally insulting. The squad begins another round with their new devices by battling each other, she manages to survive until Tari knocks her out. Everyone cheers (besides Meggy) for the humanoid cyborg and they all go to the former Inkling’s apartment for a wrap-up party. During the celebration, Axol checks up on her but Meggy hides her concerns about losing saying she’s just fine. Then Mario offers her a game of Pin The Tail On Boopkins of all people (ok, not sure what he did to make this a thing) and she happily accepts.
「レース・トゥ・ザ・フィニッシュ!」 “Race To The FINish!”
Now it’s the first day of the Splatfest and the team arrives at Deca Tower preparing for the opening round. Meggy hallucinates seeing Desti nearby, making Tari worried but Meggy once again says she’s fine. The Squid Sisters (presumably Off The Hook is on vacation) announce the beginning of the tournament and explain the rules of the round: A race in the SPLATstacle Course as a test of agility and skill and any fighting during this round will result in disqualification, whoever makes it within 20 minutes advances to the second round. Splatoon purists, it’s time for your lesson in universal lore facts. For those of you who were wondering, the tournament shown in this movie is NOT based on any event from the game series. This Splatfest is primarily original for the sake of the story as Callie and Marie said it themselves: it’s apparently the last ever tournament due to them being less cost-effective (likely since interest in Splatoon died down after Chaos vs. Order) and they’ve decided to do something different to make it special (unless they ever get proper funding again). I do not make the rules, nor do the writers. This series is not meant to follow any canon video game lore since this interpretation of the Splatoon universe is different from the official just like the Mario one. And to those who think humans cannot be in Inkopolis since they don’t exist anymore, a little game called Super Smash Bros. Ultimate already kinda threw that rule out the window. Anyway before the race starts, the team is abruptly introduced to their new rivals, Team Killer Ink. The two briefly have a back-and-forth as expected from typical rivalries like this, then all competitors stand at the start and the race begins. Everyone races to the finish while beating the following obstacles: sliding down rails, avoiding buzzsaws, shooting Zapfish dolls at hoops, avoiding water sprinklers (which is a given for the Splatsquad), climbing a tower which Meggy manages to do with a lava butt-bounce, and long jumping a huge gap towards the goal. Our heroes run into trouble with the last obstacle thanks to the Killer Ink’s leader pushing Meggy off, but the team successfully rescues her with 30 seconds remaining. Later that day, Meggy walks around frustrated about her rivals teasing her for being human and she tries to calm down with an order of ice cream. However, Crusty Sean notices her and explains that his food truck has a strict “no humans” policy. Then she travels to other shops which also happen to have the same sign from earlier. Yeah, I’m not one to reference real-life history but someone needs to tell this side of Inkopolis that it’s not 1965 (or in this case 2015) anymore. This might be the most confusing part of the video as everyone refusing to serve Meggy doesn’t make sense even for this universe. If she was able to live in Inkopolis after becoming human, why is this a thing NOW? Didn’t she help save the town with her friends? But it turns out this sequence might’ve been a dream all along as Meggy sees her past self. She tells her that she is nothing without her old abilities and she only won the round because of her friends’ help. But Human Meggy claims she’s capable on her own especially without the surfboard, her Inkling self leaves, and she wakes up.
「スクワイドラ」 “Squidward Run”
The second day of Splatfest is here and Meggy throws away her gadget as Axol oversees her entering the tower. Later on, the Squid Sisters introduce the second round which is attacking an army of Squidwards. First team to 100 and wins and advances to the finals but attacking teammates will cost 10 points. The battle begins as the four teams scramble to earn the winning score. Everything seems well until Meggy struggles to keep up with her team. Nearing 100 points, Mario spots a cannonball of Squidwards and the Ink Brigade team wins the match (not Killer Ink, this is a different team). The Splatsquad is shocked to have lost resulting in Meggy breaking down crying. She regrets throwing away the board as it would’ve helped them out to win and she runs away. Mario grows suspicious of the Brigade’s victory and proceeds to investigate.
「メギーの絶望」 “Meggy’s Despair”
That night, Meggy is depressed about her failure thinking about letting Desti down. She exclaims “Don’t be sad”, but it turns out to be Axol looking over to cheer her up. He hands her the surfboard she trashed earlier, saying that the professor upgraded his Inkweaver and is willing to test both of them out. They both spray and slide down the building which cheers Meggy up missing what it felt like having those abilities. Meanwhile back at the stage, Mario, Luigi, and Tari search for clues about the rigged match. Mario trips on something, and it happens to be a switch behind some plants. He activates it revealing a cannon that shoots out Squidward clones, and it turns out that the winning team had cheated and the three rush to tell the news. Back to Meggy and Axol as the two finish their fun, she is enlightened but still complains about the board since it reminds her of her past. Axol explains that the device does not take away from her personality or shows sign of weakness, despite being one the best manga artists out there he relies on his trusty pen to unlock his true potential. What really matters is being yourself and the advantage is nothing to be ashamed of. Meggy agrees but she wishes he had told her before they lost the tournament. SUDDENLY the Squid Sisters barge in to tell her the good news: The Splatsquad is back in the Splatfest. Thanks to the trio’s detective work (which Mario desperately wants all the credit for), the Ink Brigade has been disqualified for tampering with the arena and her team can compete in the finals. Everyone is ecstatic, especially Meggy since she is relieved to have one last chance to fulfill her promise.
「あなたに勝利を約束しました」 “Promised You a Victory”
Back to her dream, Meggy makes a deal with her past form to use the Ink Boi and she evaporates into particles floating in the breeze. Then Desti shows up asking her how it feels to fulfill her dream, but she says it’s not about winning and is doing this for her. Desti smiles and knows she will win. Then it’s the third day and final round at Walleye Warehouse, where the Turf War begins with Splatsquad against Killer Ink. Poetically as Callie says, it ends where it all began this time with standard rules. The match starts and the heat is on between the competitors resulting in some cool tricks from the Squad team. As time gets closer to zero, tension builds up when three of our heros get splattered and it’s down to Meggy. But through her skill and determination she knocks out three opponents with a triple-combo kill buying her time. The Killer Ink leader tries to escape and she chases after her. Nowhere in her sights, the leader surprise-attacks Meggy and looks up getting mocked and then hallucinates Desti as if she was right in front of her. Meggy exclaims she’s only getting started. Using the surfboard, she throws her Splattershot at her, kicks her own weapon and knocks her out. 15 seconds left and the Squad spray as much of the warehouse as they can. Time is UP, and silence looms over the arena when the score is tallied (I wonder if Judd and Li’l Judd are there). And the winner is…. TEAM SPLATSQUAD. Everyone cheers and Meggy has finally made her vow to win for Desti with tears of joy. The SMG4 crew congratulates their friends and Bob declares another party back at the apartment to celebrate the wondrous occasion. But E. Gadd shouts for a thank you for his inventions.
「何でもいい!」 “No Matter What!”
Back at Meggy’s home everyone is gleefully partying the evening away and she is finally proud to have completed her momentous task and thanks Axol for his help. Meggy goes outside to the rooftop viewing the sunset and Desti’s spirit appears. She asks what she’ll do now, Meggy replies with what she meant about her friends but Desti explains all she saw was her constant training and mourning her loss and she needs to move on. Meggy responds saying that it’s been difficult to forget so she makes it easier with a hug. Desti thanks her for keeping the promise and they both say goodbye. She fades away into the sky and Meggy is comforted knowing she achieved closure. Overhearing Mario playing Pin the Tail again, she rushes back to her room to play with her friends as the camera shifts to the sunset concluding the film.
「涙ぐましい、間抜けな、楽しい映画」 “A Tear-jerking, Goofy and Fun Film”
I love this movie A LOT and the positive reception is well-deserved. Luke, Kevin, all of you guys down at Glitch Productions, FANTASTIC work for bringing justice by finishing what the Anime Arc left off. I have nothing but true praise for this masterpiece which we’ll finally go over. The editing is well done especially during certain scenes along with the video’s overall tone make it close to the feeling of a feature-length movie. I know, 40 minutes doesn’t necessarily count as the arcs do a better job satisfying length but it holds the record for being the longest SMG4 video ever. Characters are spot-on with Meggy having the starring role to boot. The comedy is par for the course like the usual SMG4 video, but I’m glad it doesn’t clash with the overall story and serves its purpose for a good laugh as it usually does. And there are memorable moments such as Meggy crossing paths with her Inkling self, Axol helping her and my most favorite part, the ending when Desti hugs her and says goodbye. That’s powerful AND beautiful. But nothing is ever really perfect as my only problem is that there isn’t much of a bump in quality with the visuals like how most shows upgrade their art style when they’re turned into movies. I don’t think the whole thing falls apart because of it, I just wanted to know what the video would look like had it looked as good as the poster, but looks aren’t everything if you have a great plot to back it up. Maybe someday Garry’s Mod 2 will be released and the next movie will look even better than this one also becoming the new standard for future videos, who knows. If you’re confused or don’t agree on why I love the current state of the channel, it’s because we would like to see them at their true potential. By the looks of it, they might be taking baby steps or they might not be far off soon enough. Meta Runner and Glitch Productions were made from their ambition and hard work and is pretty commendable from their background of making videos initially for fun, and this movie may as well be the bridge for things to come. Whatever happens, I wish all of these people the best of luck. With all that said, I’m giving Meggy’s Destiny a perfect 10/10 and nothing else needs to be spoken.
That’s all for my review everyone, I really hope all of you enjoyed it and the film as much as I did because SMG4 DEFINITELY pulled it off. Most of my friends love it and wish them the best too. So thank you guys so much for watching and once again thank you Luke and your friends for giving us something special after all these years, please keep it up don’t let yourselves down. See you guys later and we’ll meet again for more reviews and reactions and peace out!

Re Labour vs Lib Dem - I have always voted labour where sensible (used to live in a LD/Tory marginal so obviously voted LD there) but for me likefor many people I know Labour’s position on Brexit is just not good enough. Brexit is a big enough issue and lots of people feel strongly enough about it that many of us are turning to the Liberal Democrat’s because they’ve said they would revoke Article 50, and clearly that’s the only sensible thing to do to get us out of this absolute clusterfuck 1/2
2/2 I’d love to hear your thoughts on why we shouldn’t vote Lib Dem in this situation, because I am absolutely fucking furious with both the two main parties and we need some alternatives! Thank you for your time.
*********
Thanks so much for your ask - and I’m very happy to answer. I’m interested in specifically what you think isn’t good enough about Labour’s policy on Brexit. I’ve cut back my talk on Labour and Brexit in this ask, but I’d love it if you came back with what it is you’re thinking about and I’ll talk more about Labour
There are four reasons that I don’t think that you shouldn’t vote for the Lib Dems as a solution to Brexit: I don’t think their position is serious, I don’t think they’re reliable, them getting more seats doesn’t increase the path for remain and I don’t think it’d get us out of the clusterfuck.
The Lib Dems are only promising to revoke Article 50 if they have a majority. They would not have put this policy forward if they believed they’d be in a position to carry it out. Revoking Article 50 leaves you with a serious democratic problem (and while I would have voted remain if I was here for the referendum - I do take the democratic argument very serious and think everyone who wants to remain should). Lib Dems should be a party that take democracy very seriously (and in fact were advocating for a EU referendum before one was held for that very reason) - the fact that they’re ignoring the referendum entirely suggests that they’re not taking their position seriously - and it’s all politics and game playing.
The Lib Dems also can’t be relied upon. They sold out all their promises and held up austerity in 2010 and a lot of the same people are still there. There’s a possibility that despite all the Remain posturing that they’re doing now - that if the numbers come out the wrong way and Lib Dems and Tories can form a majority - they’ll do so and vote for some version of May’s deal (I think that’s the most likely option if the Tories and Lib Dems between them have more than half the seats).
Increasing the number of Lib Dem seats doesn’t increase the pathway to Remain. The credible path to Remain at this point is through a second referendum and it’s impossible to see how that would happen without Labour in government. Right now there’s a clear path to stop No Deal, but it’s not happening, because the Lib Dems refuse to work with Labour. If they’re not prepared to work with Labour on this issue, they’re a hinderance to both stopping the worst sort of Brexit and acheiving Remain.
And finally, I know this is not what anyone of us want to hear - but revoking Article 50 won’t get us out of any clusterfuck. David Cameron basically went into this referendum with the goal of settlign the issue permanently - and look where that got us. All the problems will still be there once Article 50 has been revoked, but the anger that drove people to vote Leave in the first place will be intensified. I think that the only way that there can actually be a resolution that isn’t catastrophic is a remain path that has democratic legitimacy - and then an aftermath that doesn’t repeat that ‘ha we won’ rhetoric of the Tory Leavers and instead makes people’s lives better so that the racist rhetoric of twats like Farage doesn’t have the same power. (There’s probably also theoretically a non catastrophic soft-Brexit path as well, but I think it’s getting less and less likely by the day)
Vote Lib Dems in Lib Dem/Tory marginals absolutely. And in those seats where Labour or the Tories have a huge majority if you want to protest vote for Lib Dem go ahead. But voting Lib Dem in seats that are at all competitive between Labour and the Tories is most likely to bring about the worst possible Brexit, an empowered right, and a continuation of all the suffering under austerity.
And to do that when you could have a second referendum, A Green New Deal that means investment throughout the country and net zero carbon by 2030, scrapping sanctions and universal credit, and policies that make work better and more secure for people doing it (for starters - there’s another half dozen Labour policies that I’m equally excited about). I don’t understand talk about ‘two main parties’ at the moment - Labour and the Tories couldn’t be more different - and it shouldn’t be hard to choose.

Championship Manager ‘93 (Domark, Amiga, 1993)
One morning in my final year of primary school, lined up on the playground for the start of the day as ever, there was an unusual request from the teacher. “Girls, go inside, and boys stay here”. We boys were to receive a lecture on the previous day’s activities. As part of a self-organised Year 5 vs Year 6 football match, we had stolen school equipment, bullied younger children off the playground, and generally behaved disgracefully. We were not to ever do anything like this again. I say “we”, but until that point I had no idea the incident had happened. The teacher quietly acknowledged at the end me and two others, standing there taking this all in, had not been involved. As innocents being subject to the collective punishment stung a little, but it also felt like a small mercy. She hadn’t drawn attention to how we had failed at being boys.
For the whole of my childhood that I can remember, football was a vital part of male social status. You had to like it and to not do so would be weird and suspicious. Maybe even gay. Liking it wasn’t enough, though, and there were additional criteria. First that was in terms of playing it well, and then in terms of making the right gestures with regards to supporting a professional team -- humour with a serious edge underneath, passion but not too much passion. You should care but not show it too much. Similarly you should be interested and know stuff, but not too much stuff.
Alongside my lack of physical ability, the point about how to be interested was where I went wrong. It took until I was 20 and living next to Arsenal to form any proper attachment to one team, and my early interest in football was expressed as a voracious interest in facts and detail. Like a lot else in life, I wanted to pin things down to patterns and rules that could be understood. I wanted to know more and more. If it said in a book with the approval of Gary Lineker that it was very important to pass the ball in football, then boys on the playground who weren’t passing the ball were wrong and I could prove it.
Whatever was written down there, however much I could tell you about past World Cup winners and the current club teams of Eastern Europe, it wasn’t enough. All I needed was enough to boisterously express a view on Liverpool’s prospects for the season, but I wasn’t doing anything like that. It was readily apparent to everyone that in football, as in so much, I was failing to meet lots of unwritten social rules. It was no surprise that I was left out of that unapproved school match. It was no surprise that attempts to join in were met with anything from bafflement to cruelty. I was as weird as the boys who weren’t into football at all. If I was alone in primary school, though, I wasn’t set to be for much longer. There were a lot of other (mostly older) people who followed football with an eye for exacting detail. And in Championship Manager, they were to find a paradise.
On the surface it is paradoxical that a series of some of the most complicated games this project will cover should also be one of the most casual. Casual, that is, in the sense of ‘casual gamer’, players not tied down to those immersed in the medium of video games. The most arcane JRPGs or most layered RTSs have nothing on the impenetrability of Championship Manager. I try to picture coming into Championship Manager from a starting point of no relevant knowledge and can only imagine it being incomprehensible. There's the rub, though. Developers Domark banked on football’s cultural dominance giving them a big enough pool of potential players who wouldn’t be coming to it from a zero starting point, and they got it right. The initial release, without real players or quite the correct leagues, was a success, and by the time they provided a ‘93 update with a more accurate simulation of the new Premier League, it was able to top the Amiga sales charts.
Championship Manager ‘93, for all that it tightens up some aspects of the very first game, is distinctly raw. Selecting a team - a pretty basic task as manager - is an unintuitive mission, involving clicking numbers, clicking players' names and then working out whether they're in the right positions. Stacks of options baffle and obfuscate further. None of the actions of management are particularly easy to do. But what it gives you is detail. Information. More of it than you could possibly know what to do with. Look at the entire page of attributes given to each player in your squad. Examine the squads, stats and records of any team in the football league, even ones several divisions away from your own. See all the other teams playing games and making player transfers. Step away from the actions of managing your team any time and look into the clockwork detail of this whole world ticking along. Even the extended loading time when you start a new game feels reassuring as to the depth of the simulation it’s got to work on creating. Like in Elite before it, the sense of immersion in your corner of the Championship Manager universe is enhanced by being able to see the rest of it going about its business without giving a shit about you.
The engine used to display each match to you stands out from other games as well. Championship Manager ‘93 provides a general statement on which team is attacking, stats for attempts on goal, and, if you pause, a constantly updating rating for each player. It doesn’t make any attempt to graphically depict anything happening on the pitch, and instead it just gives a sparse text commentary on notable events. “Goal for Arsenal” will pop up out of nowhere. Or “I. Wright is through on goal” quickly replaced with “But he shoots wide!”. The terse messages provide a much greater sense of atmosphere and colour than any visual engine was capable of in 1993, and possibly greater than any would be in 2019. I can’t imagine any picture’s thousand words competing with the six word story that is “Hendry booked. He said too much.” It trusts in the game’s player to do much of the analysis and weaving of stories themselves, correctly figuring there were many people well versed in that.
Championship Manager’s way of doing things came at just the right time. The success of the Premier League was making football’s cultural dominance ever bigger. The tendency to cite so many football statistics from 'the Premier League era' means that anything from twenty-six years ago feels a lot older still. Maybe there's a parallel with British games history all but swept away after the takeover of bigger '90s powers. Personally, I have only ever watched football in that era, and grew up playing later editions of Championship Manager. The effect of playing a version of the original game, experiencing one all-conquering franchise placed at the cusp of another, is all a bit Deep Magic from the Dawn of Time. The names of the Arsenal players under my command are a strange mix of the familiar and the not. I vaguely remember the name Anders Limpar, but him getting in a huff and wanting to leave after I fail to pick him proves a surprise.
Just like my team, Championship Manager ‘93 is not quite yet the Championship Manager I remember. It makes the game player’s actions as a manager too limited and difficult and doesn’t fit them as compellingly into its wider simulation. Analysing what is there and seeing small actions pay off, though, is still a great feeling. Looking into everyone’s ratings, trying to make sense of the flow of information and adjust my selection accordingly, I switch Ray Parlour to a more attacking position in my midfield. Watching him then score the opening goal in the next match is a delight. It’s a game that knows how to make you feel clever, and does it by providing you a set of rules, a ton of information, and stepping back to let you take it on from there. It had already targeted its audience; the concept was perfect for me.
By the time I was a few years into secondary school, my approach to football wasn’t such an outlier at all. Maybe some of it was just getting older, but there was a wider cultural change going on too, as the increasing success of Championship Manager suggested. More and more people also played fantasy league competitions that encouraged a data-driven approach to watching football outside of single-team fandom. The spread of the internet and all of its cultural impact was slowly ramping up. And Championship Manager was a regular talking point with friends and classmates. At one point my football knowledge, enthusiasm and lack of skill led to them electing me non-playing captain of our class football team, and while this was largely a joke, it wasn’t a cruel one. I was familiar enough with those to know.
Championship Manager might be a casual game series, but it never seems to be the target of gamer ire directed at ‘non-games’. I’d guess that more Animal Crossing players play regularly play other games alongside that series than Championship Manager ones, but somehow the latter get left out of accusations of ruining things for real gamers. And the simple explanation is that the clear majority of its players are men. It might not fit in to all of the masculine standards of the old playground, but it isn’t ultimately threatening to any of them. It’s the boy standing there in line alongside the other boys, even if it didn’t perform transgression and strength in the same way. In fact, it could easily be absorbed and tied up with the worst of the standards, misogyny and assumed heterosexuality and all. The examination of British adolescent masculinity that is the TV comedy The Inbetweeners gives an illustration. Jay, the one of the leads most characterised by fantasist bravado, is at one point asked about the game and responds in much the same way as all his been-there-done-that sexual boasts. "Championship Manager? Completed it mate.”
The parallel was one which the series’s own marketing has been keen to use. There’s the ad in which a woman in a nightie looks on disapprovingly as her presumed partner excitedly opens his Christmas present of a Championship Manager game. You will have an attractive girlfriend, it says, and you will neglect her to play your football management simulation, because those are the things that men do. And then there’s the even more blatant ad showing spurts of sun cream on a woman’s bare back forming a tactical diagram, under the text “What man doesn’t think about it every 6 seconds?” -- masculinity, hetero sex and computer football management brought together in a tighter knot still, with a taunt that there is something wrong with you if you don’t fit them.
Looking back at that morning standing in the playground, receiving someone else’s lecture, it turns out that in the long run I wasn’t failing acceptable masculinity at all. I’ve grown up, the world has changed, and mine is the winning side. Following the detail of football and playing games that involve complex information processing still bring me joy. But I’m aware that just standing there and being counted alongside all the other boys is to be part of the problem. Amongst those there with me on the new winning team are a bunch of guys who are still mentally in the same playground and still seething about what they had to go through and that the girls didn’t, claiming they are owed something in response. Acceptance doesn’t bring relief any more. Seeing what goes into winning, I want to lose.

UC 48.37 - Grand Final, Edinburgh vs Teddy Hall
Nine months. Eighteen hours of televised quizzing. More than two thousand two hundred increasingly complicated questions, like Russian dolls on a Mobius strip. Twenty-eight teams. Only two remain. Those are some statistics, but what of the people. These numbers tell part of the story, but they omit the crucial humanity that make this show unlike any other; the high fives and the fist-bumps, the hearts in the mouths and on the sleeves, the hopes and dreams that bloomed and ballooned, the lampooned and the festooned (a bit of a tacky end to the sentence, I know, but I was on a roll. You can count yourself lucky I didn’t try and get marooned in there, too).
For the first time in thirty-five years, Scotland has an institution in the Grand Final. Edinburgh, having fallen to the Champions Elect at the semi final stage in each of the past two series, finally made it one step further by beating Durham, who had earlier bested them in the quarter finals. They had previously swept aside Sidney Sussex in their opening match, before beating UCL on the final starter of their second round match, with captain Max Fitz-James sealing the victory.
It was Fitz-James who was the key to Edinburgh’s chances going in, with his twenty-six starters twelve clear of their next best buzzer, local lad Robbie Campbell Hewson, although RCH came up with some huge answers at vital times in their semi final. Fitz-James however, also leads the team, and the tournament (and is possibly the all time leader) in Negs, with ten incorrect interruptions to his name. He was also the go-to-guy for guesses, with a further fifteen non-penalized buzzes in his fingers. If he could get the balance right between reckless abandon and the pulling of rabbits from hats then his side might well have a chance. And they would go in knowing that caution would not serve them well given the man in the opposite captain’s chair.
Freddy Leo, described by the Times this week as "having drawn comparisons to Cristiano Ronaldo” (which, while perhaps not unlike analogies I myself may have drawn, coming from a national media which only ever covers the final, smacks of the kind of laziness eschewed by someone describing the Marvel Cinematic Universe as being ‘somewhat of a cultural juggernaut’ only in the leadup to the release of Avengers: Endgame), has amassed forty-one starters in one fewer game than Fitz-James, so the Frenchman will have gone in one hundred percent ready to flex those buzzer fingers at even the merest whiff of a guess, being fully aware that if he hesitated just the slightest moment, his German counterpart would be there to steal the points. Leo had already seen off this series’ other Big Bee (because they buzz so much, get it?) in his own semi-final, with Teddy Hall beating Darwin College despite Jason Golfinos’ best efforts and eight starter questions. He’s also shown that he has steel and nerve, with a comeback from a hundred points down against Bristol University (Bristanbul, maybe, for football fans) perhaps the grittiest performance in recent years.
But even he could not be a team by himself, with Agastya Pesharody and Marcelline Bresson popping up at important moments in their semi final victory. Completing their quartet was Lizzie Fry, and were they to win they would become only the second side in the Paxman Era (beginning in 1995) to do so having been less than 75% male.
Anyway, let’s not bother with the rules, here’s your first starter for ten.
As predicted, it was Fitz-James who was first out of the blocks, but not unsurprisingly, his speculative buzz of Maypole Dancing (not Maple dancing, as I’d originally thought he’d said) put Edinburgh in the not-unfamiliar territory of negative points. Fry, who would double her total for the series with three in the final (truly a player for the big occasion, rather like Cristiano Ronaldo in that sense) opened her account with Morris Dancing. One bonus on paperclips followed, with Leo dismissing the Netherlands as the country who had worn such items in their lapels because he knows that if they had, then the Dutch Bresson would have said so already. A sign of a team that trusts and is in sync with one another.
Leo claims his forty-second decimal of the series on the next starter, with his arm-cocked buzzer-stab technique deployed with trademark verve. Bonuses on the ever-relevant subject of ‘Persistent Courtship in the Nineteenth Century (specifically in novels)’ serve them better than paperclips, although Leo is perhaps fortunate to get the points on the first of these, forgetting to add the author of Far From the Madding Crowd to his answer (though to be honest requiring both seems pretty needless, given that the two pieces of information would never come uncoupled in the mind of a University Challenge finalist. They would know both or neither in this context). The third he pulls from the ether after a period of intense concentration, startling even his teammates with his sudden remembrance of David Copperfield’s Peggotty. Teddy Hall are forty-five points clear.
Neither side manages to guess what is essentially a ‘guess a number’ question, before Malusa bursts into life and fires Edinburgh back above zero. Paxman delights in delivering the bonus description in the manner of a stand-up comedian, ‘questions on the periodic table *pause for effect* in Chinese’. Cue laughter. This doesn’t trouble the Scottish quartet, who rattle through the hat-trick with little more than a ‘hmm, is it bromine or iodine? Its probably bromine’ (reader, it was bromine).
Wearing a burgundy jacket (and hailing from Burgundy, France, but not, presumably, having drunk any burgundy wine beforehand), Fitz-James gets his evening going at the third attempt (having also guessed on the ‘guess a number question’) with the Picture starter, a Shakespearean Venn diagram. He would also take the second Picture starter (little bit of foreshadowing for you there). With two of the bonuses, Edinburgh are level. Deuce.
A second starter of the night goes to Leo, and when Fry picks up another Fitz-James fumble it looks as if the game might be starting to get away from Edinburgh. But Pesharody is unlucky in forgetting that his answer on the next starter required two parts, and isn’t allowed the time to grasp for the second when he realises. Campbell Hewson, Edinburgh’s vulture, takes his correct morsel and completes it. Alpha and Omega. Romping through another hat-trick, this time on Iron Maiden, put the Scots firmly back on track.
The music questions came in three parts, with four sets of three tunes relating to the colours of the horizontal bands on national flags (if you’re not with me we’re about halfway round the loop of that Russian Doll mobius I was on about earlier, and yes, I have no idea what I’m trying to infer by that phrase either). No one gets the starter, for which, as well as containing three difficult clues, the answer was Armenia (the kind of question that makes a Queen of she who makes it), but Edinburgh manage to decipher Estonia and take the lead for the first time in the contest.
Now it is Teddy Hall who seem lost, and Edinburgh who have all the luck, Fitz-James throwing away the correct Aggripina with misplaced resignation and the assertion that he is wrong. Malusa, who had only five starters to his name before the final, then takes his second of the night, and a full set on Elizabeth Catlett completes a hat-trick of hat-tricks on the bonuses. All of these trebles meant that they had opened up a fifty point lead.
At this stage of the game most teams would have been beaten by such a margin, but Teddy had come back from twice that already in this competition, and the next hat-trick is completed by Fry as she steals a third starter from under Fitz-James’ over-eager nose.
Pesharody makes up for his earlier mistake (like Cristiano Ronaldo when he scored a hat-trick (oh look, another hat-trick) in the second leg of Juventus’ Round of 16 match in this year’s Champion’s League versus Atletico Madrid, having scored what looked suspiciously like an own goal (although it was credited to Diego Godin) in the 2-0 reverse of the first leg) with yet another pick-up from an ill-considered Fitz-James guess. It almost looks as though his (Fitz-James’) second picture starter of the night won’t matter, as first Leo, and then Bresson (with the speed and conviction of five-time ballon d’or winner Cristiano Ronaldo) buzz in decisively to swing the lead back down to Oxford with only seconds remaining by the slimmest of margins.
There would only be time for one more starter. Nine months. Eighteen and a half hours of televised quizzing. More than two thousand two hundred increasingly complicated questions. Only time for one more...
Answer as soon as your name is called. What two digit number...
If Fitz-James had the gumption he could have gone for a one in ninety (note: ‘How many two digit numbers are there? would be a good starter question) wild guess, but he doesn’t. Wise.
...is equivalent to the Roman numerals that form the first three letters of the city that was the birthplace of...
This is such a classic University Challenge question that its almost like they planned for it to be the deciding question in the final.
...William Gladstone...
No one has the faintest.
...Beryl Bainbridge...
Some cogs start to whirr.
...And Wayne Rooney...
By now everyone knows it, but they’re frantically trying to convert LIV into a two digit number. Leo launches downwards, but Campbell Hewson has beaten him to it. Elbow perpendicular to the desk, with his hand curled and a few inches from his face as if he wants to lapse into the classical philosopher pose but knows it would be too meme-able, he frowns, but does not hesitate.
Fifty-four.
Fifty-four is correct.
They can be pretty sure they’ve won it now, but they add two more bonuses before the gong sounds to confirm them as University Challenge champions.
Final Score: Edinburgh 155 - 140 St Edmund Hall, Oxford
Max Fitz-James, Marco Malusa, Matt Booth, Robbie Campbell Hewson. The first non-Oxbridge institution to claim the trophy since 2013. The first Scottish winners of University Challenge since 1983. Congratulations, gents. You sent Proud Edmund’s army homeward, to think again.
What a match, and what a series it has been. Leo and Teddy Hall have to be immensely proud of their achievements, and were unfortunate that they came up against an Edinburgh side who had the quiz of their lives.
Novelist Sebastian Faulks came on to present Edinburgh with the trophy, and he echoed the sentiments of many viewers when he said he found the questions staggeringly difficult. Comedian Ed Gamble recently said that he’s watched almost every episode of Only Connect and never got a question right. To some, that might seem nonsensical, being as an observer so far away from the level of the players, but people watch football knowing full well that they would be unable to tonk one in from thirty yards (yes, like Cristiano Ronaldo), and the joy of University Challenge, like all sport, comes from the thrill of the competition, and from watching people who are exemplary at something being exemplary at it.
Until next time, goodbye.

UC 48.33 & 34 - Edi/Bri + Man/Dar
I was going to start this by saying it had been a while since I’d last had to do a multi-episode post, but I just scrolled back and it was apparently only a few months ago, so I guess I can’t. I was also going to open with a bit about how, if I wanted to use this blog as an example of my writing prowess to any prospective employers, it would be like putting down as a reference your boss from that bar job where you’d fallen asleep midway through pouring a pint and caused a mini lager-flood. But I said that last time as well, so in addition to showing up my inconsistent posting schedule I’d also be outing myself as an uninspired self-plagiarist.
Its obvious, both intuitively and from the brief period when I actually did manage to upload a few hours after episodes were dropping, that the only way to grow my engagement and readership is to get my blogs online in that short window immediately after the show when people are in that sweet, sweet UC headspace. Thats how the internet works, you move too slow and you get left behind. So why is it that I’ve allowed myself to postpone my self-imposed deadline by a week, so that I write the previous week’s blog just before the current one should be due? Why is it easier to distract myself from the same focus-scattering effects of Twitter and YouTube that I should be trying to counteract by getting the work done right away after a seven day interval has passed?
I can’t answer those questions, but I’m trying to get the point where I can by sleeping with my phone in the other room and reading my 12 issues for £12 Economist when I wake up instead (all the podcasts were right, its like a collection of really long tweets, but without the hashtag wars).
One advantage of the fact that no one reads these anymore is that I feel less obligation to not go off on solipsistic tangents before I’ve even started (not that the obligation ever stopped me before).
Anyway, as of two weeks ago, we’d had eight quarter final matches (twice as many as you usually get), and only had two to go. Durham and Teddy Hall were relaxing in the pot for the semi final draw, having already won a couple of QFs each, whereas Glasgow and Emmanuel would be staying forever in this stage after two losses on the trot. Four teams were still trapped here, with a win and a loss under their belts, but they would know their fates soon enough.
Edinburgh vs Bristol
In my last review, I said of Emmanuel, Cambridge that they had had the hardest possible quarter-final draw, getting knocked out by Teddy Hall and Darwin, and I don’t disagree with that, but Bristol faced the same two opponents, and would be sitting pretty in the semis had it not been for a hundred-point comeback by the cuddly Oxonians, after they had neutered the exuberance of Jason Golfinos in their match against Darwin. Edinburgh knew they’d have to be wary of a Bristolian quartet who had shown they could rise to the level of their opposition after a fairly nondescript opening few rounds.
Fitz-James buzzed in after only two words to give Edinburgh the first ten points of the game, and they doubled their score with two bonuses on Sir John Everett Millais. Booth looks anguished as he negs the next starter though, and Basu gets Bristol off the mark with a speculative guess of Tolstoy. Sumner, a physicist who’s been very good at physics questions all series, beats Fitz-James to the buzz for Transistors to give the English side the lead.
But just like the current in an AC circuit, they don’t hold it for too long, as Paxman generously says he’ll accept Fitz-James’ answer of the North Star, one of the given names for Polaris, in place of Polaris. How kind of Paxo. Bonuses on sub-atomic particles as represented by the initials corresponding to numerical scientific notation follow. Having correctly identified 10^-12 as being pico (i.e ‘p’) Booth goes too deep and suggests the pi-meson. FJ frowns, and rightly diverts to proton. Sometimes the questions aren’t so complicated.
Bristol take the lead with the Picture Qs, and it continues to alternate rapidly, with neither side able to take control of the contest. It looked as if it was going to be a matter of who had their noses in front when the gong went, but Edinburgh managed to find something in their locker, taking four out of the last five starters to put the game out of Bristol’s reach.
This will have been filmed soon after Bristol’s devastating last-minute loss to Teddy Hall, so that may have been playing on their minds going into the final stages, and they again seemed to run out of steam, falling just short of the semis for the second time. The Avonside University have now made the Quarter Finals on seven occasions in the Paxman era (including in four of the last five years) but have failed to make it beyond them every time. This was certainly the closest they’ve come.
For Edinburgh its a third semi in as many years, and they’ll be hoping they can make the leap Bristol couldn’t and go one stage further than they’ve ever managed before.
Final Score: Edinburgh 155 - 120 Bristol
Manchester vs Darwin, Cam
Darwin, the last Cambridge college left in the competition, had looked unstoppable in their first two rounds, before coming unstuck against Bristol in their first quarter-final. Their Talismanic captain Jason Golfinos was back on form as they smashed fellow Cantabrigians Emmanuel, but the loss demonstrated an over-reliance on the skipper. Manchester would be hoping for another off-day from the American
However, he introduced himself as being from ‘New York, New York, the city so nice they named it twice’, and you don’t introduce yourself as being from ‘New York, New York, the city so nice they named it twice’, unless you’re feeling full of confidence. Its like when a footballer is so sure they’ll score that they store some kind of prop behind the goal to crack out when they do (see Raul Jiminez vs Watford on Sunday).
It only takes him up until the word ‘Chrysippus’ in the opening question to show that this confidence was not misplaced. Darwin go ten points clear with his answer of laughing, which Manchester are not. They know they’re in for a tough game. Lynott comes in early in a bid to counteract Golfinos, but can only send the Mancunians below zero, where they would stay for some time. In fact, the Golfmeister would amass four starters personally before Hanson finally buzzed in, scared, with Shannon, and brought them back into positive figures.
A starter for Mulley, and Golfinos’ fifth of the evening meant that the match was pretty much out of Manchester’s hands by the halfway stage, but Antao quickly swooped up the music question, on piano pieces with the right hand missing, and was even able to name the exact piece, which impressed Paxman. This would be the highlight of Manchester’s night - not a bad highlight, all told, but indicative of the gulf between the two sides. Golfinos hammered out another starter, and then seemed to ease off a bit, allowing his opponents to break into triple figures.
For Manchester, this series represented their best performance since the end of their dominant era in 2014, and perhaps a sign that they’re on the path back to the top of the game. And for Darwin, if Golfinos turns up, this may well represent a great shot at the trophy.
Final Score: Darwin, Cam 195 - 120 Manchester
The semi finals will thus be as follows:
Edinburgh vs Durham
Darwin, Cam vs Teddy Hall, Ox
This draw is interesting because it guarantees a non-Oxbridge finalist for the first time in 6 years. It also guarantees the Darwin-Teddy Hall match featuring the head to head battle between the series’ two top buzzers in Golfinos and Freddy Leo. Its also a bit strange because Edinburgh and Durham already played each other in the QFs, and rematches are generally avoided until the final. Its in part for this reason that the past five finals have been all-Oxbridge affairs, so unless the past draws have been pure coincidence, this indicates that a conscious decision was made to guarantee a finalist from outside the Big Two...
