Can confirm that I’ve never heard the word boyal before in my life. What is boyal?
Boyal is a portmanteau that my sister and I made up and use quite often. It's a blending of the words "baby" and "royal" (alternatively: "boy" and "royal"). Although it stands for baby royal, we generally use it for any young royal or noble character as well as young characters that dress in a similar fashion or we feel fits the category. Vibes, overall, are also very important.
We first used the word to refer to Larsa Ferrinas Solidor from FFXII but we use it for many other characters as well. Other characters include Zelkova from .hack//GU ("we feel he fits" category), Luka Travers from Scarlet Nexus ("stylish looking" and "vibes" categories), and Emil from Nier ("young noble" category I believe). There are other characters as well but I can't think of them right now (some of them are just my sister's OCs, they have very fuffy hair).
Of course, this word also pertains to real-life boyals as well, which I have a slight fascination with (why anyone goes "yes, this 9-year-old would make the perfect king" is beyond me but there's usually a lot of fascinating, and sad, stories around them).
We also call our cat a boyal because his full name is Richard and we think it's funny to give out cats royal titles. There was Sir Bob Stubbles the 3rd (who has sadly passed away) and there's currently Lady Cellie and Prince Richie (the resident boyal).

Anyway Silabus is objectively the best boy in all of .hack//GU.
Honorable mention to Zelkova, though.

.Hack//G.U.+ (Volumes 1-5) - Final Thoughts
Okay, my brain is going to be so scattered by the time I get through all these different versions of G.U. I feel like I’m going to forget what’s canon and what’s not. The movie, manga, and novels are alternate re-tellings but the changes they make are so random that I don’t really understand why they bothered. You would think it would be due to time restrictions but the manga was 5 volumes!! I don’t think they needed to change anything in this case.
Thoughts:
-I would say this was better than XXXX but the storytelling was still very rough. If somebody picked up this manga without prior knowledge they would be 100% lost for sure. (Heck I was kind of lost and I know everything there is to know!) The fact that it was 5 volumes compared to XXXX’s two volumes allowed it to be less rushed at least.
-The art isn’t hideous but the anatomy is wonky and the action scenes are VERY hard to follow. Many times a character would react in shock and I would have no idea what they were reacting to.Also, Pi’s boobs are just beach balls in this.
-The translation work was pretty dang sloppy. Lots of typos and weird localized names of things.
-Just like Cubia in XXXX, I was not a fan of Kazumi’s character. He felt very shoe-horned in at the last second and had the generic “power-hungry” villain motive. Also, his design looks like a vocaloid reject lol
-Shino was weird in this. When she woke up she was basically like “lol not interested” to Haseo and then was obsessing over Ovan. Also, she apparently was willingly attacked by Ovan...okaaay.
-The manga dialogue simultaneously cranks the gay up to 11 while being all “no homo” by pairing Haseo and Ovan off with Shino and Atoli. That’s some vintage, queer baiting bullshit.
-I feel like the only thing that made this manga worthwhile was the attention to the characters’ real life selves. It’s a shame that we only learn these details in the manga which isn’t even 100% canon?? Does that mean their IRL appearances aren’t canon? People act like they are...It was weird that they kept using Haseo’s real name in-game repeatedly. Like...why suddenly call him Ryou Misaki?
-It was pretty depressing when it showed Ryou and Chigusa IRL and Ryou was a total asshole to her? Chigusa even said “you’re not like Haseo” which just makes it feel like their game relationship was a lie. It would have been better if there was a IRL follow-up at the end. I need closure that Ryou has a nice side like Haseo!
-It cracked me up when Shino just showed up at the end like “Wat I miss?” Lol thanks for nothing. -Insert “Shows up late with Starbucks” meme-
-I didn’t realize the Kuhn was Sieg!! (Or maybe I just forgot lol). I enjoyed the little Liminality reference. It’s kind of annoying how they are super vague about all the connections to the original series though. “Seven years ago there was a CERTAIN boy who loved a CERTAIN girl.” Just say the names!
-It was nice to get some extra character interaction: Pi and Kuhn, Zelkova and Aina, Atoli and Haseo having some realistic banter about the network crisis...
-I suppose they called it “GU +” because it elaborated on the ending of the first 3 games but now that there’s a 4th game the name doesn’t really work haha
All in all this was a pretty rocky read. A lot of the dialogue was just bland exposition from the games, the art was hard to follow at times, and they rearranged plot elements in confusing ways. I’m still glad I read it, however, because it brought in some real life snippets that I thought the games and Roots were really lacking.
I give .Hack//G.U.+ Vol. 1-5 a 5 out of 10

Neutinamu Youth Center, South Korea
If today’s youth is the future, then the new Yeonsu-gu Youth Centre is conceived as a safe social incubator for our teenagers, a place to inspire, motivate and stimulate through playful, educational, cultural and creative activities. Designed as a dynamic and flexible centre, it will assist and train adolescents to develop the tools and skills necessary to address the future, while connecting and engaging with the city and the surrounding community. Through its eco-friendly ‘mass timber’ architecture and ‘floating gardens’ it will promote and encourage new lines of thinking for a more ecological and sustainable future, establishing itself as a leading youth organization endorsing ethical and forward-thinking design.
The concept for the Youth Centre germinates not only from the idea that youth is like a tree that grows, but specifically from one of the strong symbols of Yeonsu-gu, the Zelkova Serrata tree (느티나무neutinamu), which symbolizes health. As a result, Neutinamu reinterprets this idea of a tree as ‘climbable’ timber architecture reaching for the sky, symbolizing the growing youth and hosting in its framework various training and self-development activities for teenagers, as well as multiple gardens and public gathering spaces that offer magnificent views over the city.
The central idea is for the project to be conceived more as a ‘community’ rather than a building, one that is in harmony with its surroundings, and that notably increases the green coverage ratio by lifting itself so as to provide space for a beautiful ground floor park and by adding multiple public gardens at different levels. The timber grid and the vegetation will help to further develop a true ecological approach, providing young people with open spaces in which to enjoy clean breathable fresh air, rich natural elements and sunshine filtering through foliage.
Designed as a light 8x8m mass timber modular structure that gradually diminishes at its peak, the new centre holds in its grid all the program functions within the restricted 50m height. The mechanical together with energy saving technologies, solar, wind and water are just above, while the highest part, that reaches 80m, is just timber structure that not only conveys the feeling of reaching towards the sky but more importantly creates a dialogue between the surrounding 150m skyscrapers and the smaller surrounding buildings.
The program boasts two vertical distributions, one in the main foyer and one within the park, so as to give easy access both to underground parking and loading and to the whole centre suspended above ground. The swimming pool is placed on the ground floor together with a small kindergarten, an open air amphitheatre and an elegant kiosk all integrated into the park. As one ‘climbs’ the structure through passageways, stairs and bridges one can encounter all the curated functions for culture, social and technological programs as well as posters or screens for projections towards the city.
Opened towards the city with framed views, Neutinamu produces a calm space that exudes the warmth and gentleness of wood. It is specifically this structural framework that allows the architecture within the centre to evolve over time, creating a dynamic composition of organic impromptu spaces that grow around and into one another creating interesting social spaces.
The sustainability of the project has been considered at multiple levels of the design, from the actual cross-laminated timber structure construction material to self-sufficient technologies using renewable energy from solar panels and wind turbines placed on top of the Youth Centre, as well as the installation of water collection and reuse facilities to sustain the building’s water consumption. Vegetation which is also intrinsic to the design is the most efficient and cost effective way to absorb carbon dioxide, protect the interior spaces from noise pollution and dust from street-level traffic and is also used to moderate temperatures in the building in the winter and summer by shading the interiors from the sun and blocking winds.
Neutinamu Youth Centre will not only help young people to grow into creative and convergent talents able to cope with the rapidly changing social environment of the current 4th industrial revolution, but will also be a symbol of progressive and sustainable architectural biodiversity, redefining itself as a living and breathing cultural element that serves as a bridge to connect nature, culture and people. Furthermore, its self-sufficient qualities and green technology systems will reduce the overall waste and carbon footprint of the building and in a few years the gardens will have attracted numerous animal and bird species, establishing an outpost of spontaneous flora and fauna re-colonization in this part of the city.
With night descending, the structural grid will slowly disappear while the program boxes will come to life as sky lanterns amidst the vegetation, creating a poetic illusion of fireflies.

I used to play Zelkova here! If you ever want someone to talk about .hack with I got you haha )
[omg Zelkova?! That’s actually pretty cool! I mostly knew about GU from the light novels/manga/anime at first (especially since SIGN/Legend of the Twilight Bracelet/LINK took up my time when I was younger) so Last Recode was my first time ever really meeting Zelkova and he’s quite an interesting character! Also thanks a lot~!]

Spent a pretty hefty chunk of the summer working on this monster.  I’m pretty close to wrapping up its follow-up now.  Of all the characters in .hack//GU, I always felt that Hiiragi and Matsu needed more love!  And since I couldn’t find any fic starring them, my little shipper heart decided to fix that.

anyway, so. I can't say I'm entirely happy about kusabira's thing, and I'm not super happy about the thing with zelkova, either, although that's probably because I liked my headcanon where he was this super precocious kid (and possibly helba's, too). but I was always pretty torn on whether he was that or whether he was what the game super heavily implied he is, so I'm not too bothered either way?
kusabira, though. man. I doubt she's gone for good but I can't believe they brought her in just for that. if you can replace your new character with an item, did you really need the new character? I'm happy she exists, though, because as established she is super cute and I love her. and as zelkova's little sis she's pretty neat.
you know what else was pretty neat? THAT ENTIRE LAST DUNGEON. some Quality fucking Content, right there. haseo's fifth form was pretty rad, too.
tl;dr it's like cc2 went "hmm, what would azu want to see in an epilogue for gu" and then fucking made it happen. I missed figure skating to blitz through this and I regret nothing.

.Hack//GU - 35 Hours in Update
For some reason, steam thinks I am 35 hours into this game but the game save file thinks I’m 25 hours into the game. I didn’t realize the discrepancy until I made a bunch of posts so I’m just going to go with what steam says.
It’s been awhile since I’ve posted a GU update and thinking about it there’s a lot I haven’t discussed. That being said, nothing has happened plot-wise since my last post. This is a nothing game. Nothing happens.
Notes:
-I’ve been checking the pixiv art for this game and HOO BOY it is steamy. Haseo is one of those versatile characters that you can ship with anyone and people do. I’ve seen him shipped with Atoli, Shino, Ovan, Matsu, Sakaki, Tsukasa, Kite, Tri-Edge etc. etc. and imo...all the ships kind of work? This isn’t really a good thing. They mostly work because Haseo doesn’t have much of a personality/character and that’s why you can just conjure up chemistry between him and anyone else from your imagination. It’s good for some hot fanart but bad from a critical standpoint.
-I really like the lucky animals and the noises they make <3
-Getting pretty sick of seeing the same 4 dungeons over and over again. At least it will be exciting when more servers become available?
-So the implication with the fight between Alkaid and Haseo is that Haseo is losing control right?? I want more context for how avatars work. Skeith was obviously a bad, evil thing in SIGN but now he’s just a weapon but also...maybe evil? I feel like Pi, Kuhn and Yata were just like “Yeah...this is just a thing that some of us have.” .Hack always takes 20 years to explain basic concepts so I guess I’ll just have to be patient.
-I think there was a threesome joke with Kuhn?? I don’t know why but I felt scandalized by that lol
-I still find Sakaki kinda hot lol. Not sure what his evil scheme is yet, only that he has one.
-I’m really anticipating seeing game!Tri-Edge at this point more than anything else. Mostly, I want to hear what he sounds like cuz according to all the fanart I’ve been looking at he makes noises in the games :0 Also, I just want to know what he is and see him interact with Haseo more.
New Character Impressions:
-I forgot to talk about my impression of Gabi in the last post. I think he’s fun but find his lolrandom humor kind of annoying. I like that him being the leader of Kestrel is unexpected and makes Kestrel less than a straight-up antagonistic guild and more of a morally grey group. I feel like they’re more trolls than anything. Anyway, it’s nice to have more beast characters.
-Antares has a funky design that’s hard to make out. I’m not really sure what they were going for with him...some kind of Tengu? He almost looks like an Okami character. I’m personally not a huge fan of the traditional, Japanese aesthetic so I’m a bit biased against him. Also, he’s basically just Jiraiya from Naruto. His character seems really random to me? Like, he’s supposed to be a mentor to Haseo but Haseo already has like 5 mentors (Ovan, Shino, Yata, Kuhn, Pi). Why is everyone so obsessed with this boy!?
-Sirius hasn’t done much yet but I really like him. He’s like this snobby elitist but he’s also really elegant and refined? According to the .Hack wikia he’s supposed to have the head of a jackal but I totally thought he was a gazelle or something?? wtf...
-I was super pumped for Alkaid based on her design and from what I read in the Alcor manga a long time ago. Whenever I play a game with dating aspects I pick out my partner before I start the game based on first impressions. This choice can change but I like to go in with an idea of who I’m aiming for. Alkaid looks super badass and I love her design (hair, outfit, face, weapon are all on point). I was very ready to ship her and Haseo. Now...I’m not so sure. Her dub voice is pretty bad...she sounds like a 10 year old boy. I know they do that a lot with tomboy characters but it doesn’t always work as well in English as it does in Japanese. I hope I can get past it but for now I find her voice very distracting.
-Zelkova! I like him. He cute. The concept for his character is cool too, he’s like this naive figure head kid who is unaware of the corruption of his own guild. I wanna protect him.
