FLASHBack: Week 67 [First-Class FLASHBack] - Weebl & Bob: FF7 / Scampi

Easter is this month, so the obvious choice for this installment of First-Class Flashback is going to be Jonti "Weebl" Picking. However, I did all of his Easter themed content last year. So my next thought was to cover some Weebl & Bob episode to get some egg related content, and then talk about Weebl's animation trilogy titled "The Lord", a series of animations in the style of old Black & White Edwardian films, narrated by Lord Peter Feathering-Walthamstones. His attempts to show you his drawing room are thwarted by the fact that he's high off his mind on various illicit substances. However, it appears that "The Lord" trilogy is now only available for viewing via Weebl's Patreon. So I'm just going to be flying by the seat of my pants for this, with some Weebl content that I haven't covered yet, at random.   Perhaps not entirely at random, as I am going to stick with my plan of including a Weebl & Bob episode, after all this is the season for eggs. And while I've covered these eggy boys before, the ones that I have have all been Weebl-centric. However for a small handful of the Weebl & Bob shorts, the art style changes, with the premise that Bob made those episodes. Bob's shorts are characterized by a red-orange background instead of the usual purple, and a hand-drawn line-art look with an excess of "line boil". Line boil is that look that you get in hand-drawn animation where it's clear that the artist was not able to accurately and smoothly draw the same outlines from frame to frame; Originally considered to be an animation defect, it became a style choice for professional animators in the 90s when a method was developed to automate its addition to digital 2D animation.   And if I'm going to talk about one of the Bob-animated toons, the obvious choice would be one known for making its players think about resurrection -- originally because of the fact that Phoenix Downs don't work in cutscenes, but more recently because its publisher is finally getting around to the high definition remake that fans have been begging for for the last few console generations. Posted on 10 December 2002, FF7 is the 25th Weebl & Bob Short. In this animation, the role of Cloud is played by Weebl, and Bob is Sephiroth (or possibly Aeris -- when you get down to sketches the two have similar hairstyles). The main points of satire are the aggressive random encounter system (a topic also touched upon by Legendary Frog), and excessively long in-battle cutscenes.

  So next, we're going to look at Scampi (I've Seen Things), released on 14 September 2003 ... *Listens to Voice From Offstage* ... What do you mean I already mentioned Scampi? ... *Listens Again* ... In the Savlonic post? Argh. But I didn't drop a link to a 10 Hour Version, as is customary for covering Weebl's Flash loops here on FLASHBack. And I know I didn't mention the Scampi Remix posted on 15 July 2009 where Weebl asked ZekeySpaceyLizard to re-animate it in his own style, nor the Christmas version of Scampi from Weebl's 2015 Advent Calendar. So this isn't entirely a re-hash.   Next week on FLASHBack, more eggs.

todays theme was “scorched” which is the same as roasted so im not bothering taxing my brain over it

so instead i drew the cast for the first 1/3 or so of the Profiteer scripts ive been writing. im at about 36 of these at the moment. im still not sure what i want to do with them. a webcomic is a pretty huge endeavor, but at the same time its not like im up to much these days

anyway

from left to right

vahista, the little blue fellow. a sea monster musician with a gambling problem. hires zeke (the green reptile) to be his bodyguard. they become partners for a bit, doing odd jobs and small time crime to pay off their debts. as time goes on, vahista grows disgusted at zeke and the work they do. vanishes mysteriously later on.

thrist, the black gooey thing. she hails from a dimension where light does not exist. has a tendency to live inside of people. also has a tendency to slowly devour them. she doesnt remember who she used to be for much of the story. which is a good thing. because who she used to be is someone quite dangerous.

harla, the yellow one. a religious zealot and fanatic. she and zeke meet when she is exiled for burning heretics. they bond over a love for recreational substances. she later becomes a despot of her world. things seem pretty good until thrist’s people invade and begin to devour the populace. she is willing to do anything to save them. anything.

komkros, the grey thing in the back. his body is made of data. his people are living concepts, from a dimension where only thought exists. he quite enjoys hacking and stealing data to add to himself. he later becomes a space cop, working for kosiv, the red fellow on the right. they condemn harla’s world when a plague breaks out. they dont know its an invasion until its much too late.

zeke, the green main character of the story. from a slave to a mechanic to a soldier and finally winding up as a war profiteer, zeke has done a lot of questionable things in life. the last of a dying race, theres little he wont do to make a quick buck. he assembles a crew of folks as odd as he is, in the hopes they can get everything they ever wanted. sadly this leads to tragedy for a great many people.

beek, the little purple space crab, smiling, which she doesnt do often. she always had a knack for putting things together and taking them apart. but while trying to build an infinite energy source she accidentally creates something much more precious: a soul. now a parent to a being neither flesh or machine, she wants a life free of chop shops and gunsmithing. but life doesnt always work out the way you want it to.

kosiv, the red nasty looking fellow. an utter bastard. abusive. petty. arrogant. and zeke’s commanding officer and longtime nemesis. zeke gets the upper hand and kills him early on in the story. but his death causes quite a snowball effect as the system begins to unravel both politically and socially. because even a bastard can have very powerful friends.

i really gotta do something with these.

Howdy folks! Turns out on top of Shooty and the Catfish I also have 3 animated shorts on the go. At the moment I am waiting to hear back about funding on Deep Water. I also have a bit of a long term project going on in collaboration with @zekeyspaceylizard which should be super exctiting and I cant wait to start sharing it with you all. Lastly I am working on something called “A Shark With A Briefcase” (to celebrate hitting 600 subs on Youtube) which is much like Deep Water in the sense that its basically just a dream I had... It doesn’t have much in the way of characters, but the ones it does have you can see above!

Introducing Sophisticated Steve and Miss Lady, because im terrible at names. Lastly I would like to welcome back Pissy Pete (because im actually amazing with names) who hasn't been seen in a short since Super Flappy Bird Bros 4 years ago.

it's because desert rain frogs are burrowers! they spend most of their time buried in the ground to keep cool and moist in their unenviable desert home. and crucially, they do this BACKWARDS.

so, the secret to a great ass, from a tiny frog: bury yourself in the sand all the time ass-first, and you too will develop glutes of steel.

and then you can make this face all the time forever.
