Missing my favourite bar in Brugge
Missing my favourite bar in Brugge
21 Draughts, still talked about to this day.
A nondescript ferry from Hull to Zebrugge on a December Saturday evening in 2014 probably isn’t the start point for too many Belgian beer related tales. However this one starts on the vessel locals affectionately call “The Party Boat” offering super cheap weekend trips abroad to Amsterdam and Brugge.
It was £35 return including cabin and coach…

BELGIUM Knokke After all of that exploring we were back at base in Knokke. Billed as the Belgium Riviera, it certainly seems to have money, judging by the restaurants and flash cars. Having walked through the town a few times it was time to visit the church, continue past the town hall and take in the World War Two memorial and flags. The Canadians played a big part in liberating the town and ahead of the upcoming commemorations, there are plenty of Canadian flags flying from buildings. Reaching the tourist office which in itself is set in a pretty brick building, we were on the sea front. One day we walked right passing the sand dunes and towards Holland. On another occasion by turning right we could see the port of Zebrugge. I have to say there is not too much along the sea front, unless you like art galleries and plenty of them. Very few cafés, it is mainly grey concrete apartment blocks. Our time here will always be looked on favourably due to the train and tram stations allowing us to explore the country and beyond.

BELGIUM Oostende It was a good start to the day to when Richard produced a Belgium bun at breakfast, well not literally! After some planning for a few days away coming up, we headed to catch the tram near our local train station. It is the longest tram journey in the world, no that's not me moaning, that is a fact! At 42 miles in length and with 69 stops, it can be a long journey but we rode half of the length to Oostende station. Across from the station is a marina containing Mercator, designed as a training ship for the Belgium merchant fleet, built in Scotland in 1932, since 1961 she has become a floating museum. After spying a tower in the distance, so heading there, we found ourselves not too far from Leopoldpark. Set out in 1860 along the old city walls, it has a pond in the middle, a bandstand dating from 1885, but is best known for a statue called The Sea, or by it's popular name Fat Mathilde. Besides the statue is a floral clock created from 20,000 flowers and plants that were in bloom. We headed to the seafront and saw the National Monument voor de Zeelieden, a tribute to those killed at sea. As the mist descended we struggled to see HMS Vindictive, which was a British Arrogant-class cruiser built in 1897 that participated in the Zebrugge Raid, an attempt to unblock the port in 1918. A man made pathway led to the sea so as the wind picked up and rain started, we headed out to try and get a better look at Fort Napoleon. It is a polygonal fort built during the Napoleanic wars and was designed to repel a British attack that never came. Having been abandoned the Germans used it during World War One, before it was disused until being restored as a museum. Safely back on the seafront we were in need of refreshment and a chance to dry off. We had heard of something that was just our cup of tea, or in this case coffee, served with a side glass of advocaat. This allows your biscuit to be dipped and is quite delicious. Feeling hungry we had a cream sponge each too, before heaving out again. St Peter and St Paul's church is a neo gothic church from 1907, what adds to the attraction is the memorial chapel to Belgium's first queen, Marie-Louise of Orleans who died in Oostende in 1850. Finally, we made it back to the seafront to see an impressive monument to Leopold the second, before right in front we found a tram stop and within ten minutes were on a busy tram back to Knokke.
