📍Zamami and Aka island, Okinawa prefecture When you visit the islands of Zamami and Aka in Okinawa’s Kerama Island cluster, look out for a dog statue on each of the islands. These are the statues of two dogs called Shiro and Marilyn, and a tribute to a story of everlasting devotion. Who are Shiro and Marilyn? Shiro and Marilyn were two dogs that lived side-by-side on the island of Zamami. They were inseparable, until one day in 1986 when Shiro and his owner moved to the neighbouring island of Aka, a 15-minute ferry ride across the channel. But distance proved no barrier to Shiro, who would jump into the ocean every morning and was frequently sighted by island residents making the 3km swim across the channel between Aka and Zamami Island, regardless of the weather or choppy sea, just to be reunited with his beloved Marilyn. Shiro did not forget his own family, and would return to them via that same arduous swim in the evening. Okinawa

Voici bien longtemps que je n’ai posté de nos nouvelles. Preuve que je ne m’ennuie pas!...

Je vais essayer de me rattraper un peu, en vous envoyant quelques photos et commentaires de nos voyages et aventures

Pour commencer, notre voyage à Okinawa, en février, juste avant la visite d’Eliott:

I’ll try to catch up a bit, sendind some pictures and comments on our last trips

First, our trip to Okinawa in february, just before Eliott visited us:

Un voyage d’affaires en fait, Sébastien ayant une conférence à Naha, mais qu’on a complété d’une visite sur une petite île voisine, comme on les aime tant: déserte, hors saison, un peu secrète: Akajima (faisant partie de Zamamijima). Paradis des plongeurs en saison. Une mer que les gens d’ici disent froide pour l’instant mais qui nous convient parfaitement (20degC ;-) ), aux couleurs incroyables, sable blanc et récifs de coraux, jungle sur la terre (avec de mini chevreuils sympatiques qui semble-t-il peuvent nager d’île en île).

In fact a buisness trip, as Sebastien has a conference in Naha, but we completed it with a visit to the neihbourg island, one like we like so much: empty, out of season, u bit secret: Akajima (part of Zamamijima). Divers paradise in season. A sea people here would call cold, but perfectly fitted for us (20 degC), with unbelievable colours, white sand, coral reefs, jungle on shore (with nice mini deers who can swimm from island to island I was told).

Les constructions (le peu qu’il y en a et le “plus peu” encore qu’il en reste après qu’Okinawa aie servi de bouclier entre les Etats unis et le Japon en 1945) sont un peu différentes de celles du Japon “continental”... Il en reste une sur l’île voisine de Akajima:

Constructions here (there are anyway very little of them, and much less since Okinawa served as schield between Japan and USA in 1945) are a bit different from the mainland Japan ones... There is one of them remaining on the neibourg island:

Retour dur l’île principale. Nous faisons (ou je fais selon si Sébastien assiste à la conférence ou non) les touristes plus traditionnels. La vie à Okinawa est très différente du Japon. Plus douce, plus relax. Et il fait plus chaud!

Back on the main island of Okinawa. We play traditionnel tourists. Life here is more relax, softer than in Japan. And it’s definitely warmer :-)!

Visite du jardin chinois (Fukushu-en) et du jardin d’été du roi (Shikina-en) (je vous laisse décider ce qui est quoi):

Le palais de Shuri, palais royal d’Okinawa (évidement une reconstruction, la ville ayant été rasée une certaine année 1945). Il faut savoir qu’Okinawa, en tant que royaume de Ryukyu, fut longtemps indépendante et très active dans le commerce dans le pacifique ouest. Donc il fallait aux rois de Ryukyu maintenir de bonnes relations avec le Japon et la Chine. C’est pourquoi le château comprend deux parties pour les receptions, l’une dans le style japonais et l’autre chinois!

Shuri Palace, the kings palace (of course a reconstruction, Naha having been completely destroyed in 1945). One must know that Okinawa, once Ryukyu kingdom, has been long independant and very active in west pacific commerce. So the Ryukyu kings had to be in good relations with both Japan and China, the big neighbourgs,. That’s why the palace has two receptions buildings, one in japanese style, one in chinese style!
