I've been a big kickstarter backer for the past few years now. Mostly for pin campaigns, but I've backed for comics and music as well. Pateron is another thing. I've supported a few artists for specific rewards, and this Tokyo Mew Mew set from @oceaninspace is the latest!

I've been a massive fan of Tokyo Mew Mew since the early Mew Mew Power days on 4kids!TV back in like 2005/2006. I'd set the vcr to record the episodes in case I wasn't awake at 7 am to watch on Saturday mornings. I am so glad TMM has seen a resurgence due to the new anime because middle school me would be LIVING for all the accessible merch!

Some old fanart of my favourite magical girl, Zakuro from Tokyo Mew Mew

I decided to read the original Tokyo Mew Mew manga. This author note stuck out:

Because a couple characters still kept these color coded names. Ichigo MOMO-miya. Lettuce MIDORI-kawa.

I already knew the Mews' first names and the alien trio's names came from foods, but hadn't known about colors being incorporated into their names.

So out of curiosity, I looked up Japanese words for colors:

Here's some additional color trivia:

The four main colors in Japanese culture are black, white, red, and blue, with the last two representing all warm and cool colors respectively. (Green especially used to be considered blue.)

The word for color is "iro", thus why many of the additional colors use "iro" as a suffix.

So with those in mind, I realized the Mews aren’t the only characters named after colors. (Full name meanings are pulled from the fandom wiki, but here I'll list a name, the word part referring to a color, and said word part's literal meaning in Japanese unless otherwise indicated.)

Ichigo Momomiya: "momo" = peach

Minto Aizawa: "ai" = indigo

Retasu Midorikawa: "midori" = green

Bu-Ling Huang or Purin Fong: "huang" is the Mandarin form of 黃 = yellow

Zakuro Fujiwara: "fuji" = wisteria

Ryou Shirogane: "shiro" = white

Keiichiro Akasaka: "aka" = red

And characters in spin-offs and sequels:

Ringo Akai: "aka" = red

Beri Shirayuki: "shira" = white

Tasuko Meguro: g → k in "kuro" = black

And finally...

Masaya Aoyama: "ao" = blue

The Blue Knight. Deep Blue. The aliens' messiah, if you treat the first name as a Japanese-to-English pun.

It was there in the name all along.
