actually in tears over how much i love Mayu. i don't want Wanpre to end, i'm still consistently bowled over by how good it is 😭 the quality of the writing is just really high in a way that you don't necessarily expect from kids shows like this, it's so impressive. the parallel being drawn between Yuki and Zakuro here is soooo good. Mayu's arc is so good. also thrilled to have a Mayu focus episode that's ALL about fiber arts without even one mention of makeup, huge win

Every so often, I think if I do some work related to the tokyo mew mew fanfiction I've been working on since 2019, I'll get back to writing and posting chapters. This is my most recent attempt at that.

Shameless promoting: the story is called Tokyo Mew Mew A La Carte and focuses on Ringo moving to Tokyo and joining the main team as they face off against a new threat: hybrid mew mews that seem to be the same race as the aliens.

The evil mews are based on the designs for the scrapped mouse mew and tokyo black cat girl. The writing is mediocre at best, but it's still a fun time when I actually post.

i’m not gonna lie, i hate the editing in the new mew mew op so much. it looks so soulless and half-assed but maybe that’s just the problem with modern animation because everything nowadays boasts a complete lack of shading and spatial depth and most background art is so lazy and generic they could’ve stolen it from a stock website. to say nothing of the fact that most characters look like they’ve just been clicked and dragged on top of the underlying layer which makes the final product look too uncanny valley and only half-finished.

Café Mew Mew is throwing an anniversary party at a popular new undersea restaurant! Shirogane leaves the party planning to the five excited Mew Mews. Ichigo is planning an exhibit on Red Data Animals with the help of Aoyama. Kish overhears their plans, and sets up a plan for infiltrating the party with Pie and Tart. Then, on the day of the party … disaster strikes! Can the Mew Mews and the rest of the crew entertain the guests while keeping everyone safe?!

A couple translation notes:

I’m using the same romanization that the Japanese team working on TMMN uses to translate character names (ie. “Quiche” is “Kish” and “Bu-Ling/Pudding” is “Purin”)

Unfortunately I was unable to completely translate the riddle at the end — I’ve denoted where the riddle is left improperly translated, but it shouldn’t affect your ability to understand the answer or the story at all.

On the same topic, this translation is not going to be perfect. This was a lot of work (5,400 words, phew!) and I’m doing my absolute best as a non-Japanese-speaker with the tools and awesome people around me helping me with this project — so please be kind if I misread a word or two. 😖 if you’d like to check my translation, I also uploaded photos of all pages of the original booklet here.

new tmm ship just dropped

so in my brain it goes like this: hime was injected before the main mews but wants to be a loner; she doesn’t like working with teams— after she saw her now ex-boyfriend her hurt by chimera animas, she isolated herself from even him without telling him she was a mew mew. And she doesn’t much like the way Ryou does things, either. The problem is, her loner act causes a lot of trouble for the main team. Zakuro? Sees a lot of herself in this firecracker girl who hides behind a mischievous persona. they might even have history-- when Zakuro was in her 'loner girl' era Hime might have proposed a partnership, and is now jealous Zakuro is with the mews and not her...👀

This version of Azumi is pretty headcanon-y, personality wise, because in the one shot we really don't get a lot to work with and I wanted her to be distinct, personality wise, from Ichigo, and still keep the 'girl who works alone and has fireworks powers' in tact. LOVE a chaotic girl with some edge. In my mind she could even be something like a rogue phantom thief type character.

Koritora: white toyger

Jack: totally white except for the tail and ears munchkin cat

Otsukin: obviously gray british short hair

Marikin: white with little beige on his paws, tail and ears ragdoll

Axez: grayish burmese cat

fusakin: orange tabby

Syumitaro: silver maine coon

Fukuro: i rather a korat cat so she would be gray

Uie: chartreux so they match fukuro

Arakawa: white scottish fold

Zakuro: black and white kinkalow

Taiyo: white chantilly tiffany

Adukin: calico laperm

Kashikin: average sphynx

Eclair: she was supposed to be a oriental cat!! so she would be a chocolate colored oriental cat

Honestly, my biggest reason for having pyonderful precure hopium now even at this late into the show is because Wonderful seems to be a season that really tries to make every detail important. Even things that seem to be silly filler like Yuki's cat gathering end up being significant to the plot later on. It seems to be an important framing device for next week's Christmas/Zakuro episode.

So if an important powerup episode scripted by the series head writer featured a scene with Satoru bemoaning about how "all he can do is watch" with the Precure reflected in his glasses and that hasn't been satisfyingly resolved yet (finding Gaoh's base after he already left and translating a diary aren't exactly much to directly help them), it's going to mean something. We've had points where they call back to individual lines from previous episodes that you didn't think were particularly important. They really don't forget anything.

Also the scarf Iroha made for him *also* has elements of his transformed design in it. If they didn't design it like that for teasing future events, it'd be a level of cruelty I wouldn't believe was possible.

so yeah.

I'm still hopeful.
