Entrapdak Positivity Month - Ticket

In a quite corner of Crypto Castle lab, Entrapta was tending to Hordak’s cybernetic body. What seemed like such an intimate moment had become routine over the years.
Even after all these years she still insisted on doing this maintenance by hand and refused to let Hordak use a machine. As she tightened his loose connections, updated his operating software and cleaned out his ports, he sat topless and motionless except for scrolling his finger on his datapad. He read out Queen Mermista’s woes on social media giggling all the while as the majority of these were self inflicted disasters.
“There you go Sweety,��� she announced while lubricating the last port, “that should keep you going for another while”
He smiled as he stretched his scrawny arms. Now that his chronic pain was eased, he had mobility again. “Thank you my Love,” he responded.
As she refitted his exoskeleton cables into his ports they were interrupted by a female clone who popped their her head out of a ventilation shaft. This clone bore more than a passing resemblance to both of them, “Momma, Papa, what’s this?”
This clone, Nebula Spectra Luminosity Neutrina (so special they gave her four names), had been quite the accidental addition to their family.
Nebula had started life as a replacement body for Hordak. A body where his defects had been genetically removed and replaced with Entrapta’s cells. They never understood how this worked and gene splicing with other clone cells didn’t, but were glad something finally worked.
Yet the body was still imperfect and somehow evolved past the initial plan of a hollow shell. They’d never been so pleased to have such a failure on their lab, and wept tears of joy after years of failure and frustration in conceiving naturally. They finally had been blessed with a child of their own. Unfortunately Nebula was forever stuck in an adult form like Hordak had been, a side effect of her initial conception as a cloned body.
Nebula popped her head out of a vent and held a small tattered piece of card in a hair tendril and was examining it closely. She certainly had inherited Entrapta’s curiosity and somehow managed to find the most obscure items around the castle.
Entrapta plucked the card using her hair, used another tendril to flick down her second pair of glasses and read the words on the ticket. Instantly she lit up with the biggest smile.
“Oh Hordak do you remember?…” she started, “this is from…” she pointed at the faded words on the ticket with a hair tendril, as Hordak peered over and finished her sentence, “…our first date. Back when we viewed the roaming comet Rhullo”
“So where is it now?” questioned Nebula as she shuffled her tall frame out of the vent.
Hordak chuckled while Entrapta finished slotting in his exoskeleton parts
“Now that is the right question my Serendipitous Scion,” he smiled warmly at Nebula, “…for no one knows where it is n-”
“It blew up” interrupted Entrapta, who’d searched up the information on the datapad with a stray hair tendril.
She looked dumbfounded at the Hordak, “did we blow that one up?”
Hordak thought for a moment, “…I don’t think so”
Nebula soaked up ever second of the exchange, “how many comets have you blown up?”
“Not man-“ started Entrapta.
Hordak nudged her and winked, “-many that were inhabited”
Entrapta giggled and returned the wink in an overly theatrical way, “oh yeah..only the deserted ones. Gotcha Honey”
“Momma, Pappa! When can I blow up a comet?”
Hordak ruffled the long hair on her crown, “when you’re old enough”
Nebula pouted, her hair fluffing up, “but I’m old enough nooooooow” she whined.
“Now Darling,” started Entrapta, “if our daughter is old enough to make her own fake ID, then she’s old enough to blow up a comet.”
Hordak sighed and folded his ears back as he stood up.
“Fine” he stated flatly
“Oh Pappa” Nebula exclaimed hugging her father tightly
“But on one condition…”
“Oh?”
He paused for a moment basking in her excitement
“Get your Big Siblings, they’ll want to see this too” he chuckled

Peppermint would open up the panel and hook an AMP reader, getting energy from it. "Woah, this thing has its own energy supply that can last for... hours. Maybe a whole day," Peppermint explained before finding a USB port to plug her phone in. She began accessing the data through her phone and she found something troubling in the code.
"This code, it's similar to Spectra but incomplete. Was this a prototype?" Peppermint questioned out loud.
Suddenly, the boombox clicked and a guitar rift played the startled Peppermint to her feet. Then a rap song began to play.

Peppermint cringed at the music, wondering what provoked her brother to choose this piece. "Yeesh, Kale. Could you be any more creepy?" The tempo and beat echoed and throbbed in her head, the music getting louder.
"Ugh! I'm turning this o- Woah! Huh!?" Suddenly Peppermint's hips started to shake on their own, moving to the beat. "I-I can't control my body! Is it this music?!" She questioned, before her body moved again. She was now spread leg and leaning down, hands on the floor and twerking her rear back at Ethan.
"Ugh! D-Don't just stand there new guy! Help me!" Peppermint called out, blushing in embarrassment as she was dancing in a provocative manner at him.

"Okay, that's the last of it," Peppermint said, grunting as she carried a heavy box full of old tech from Project Armstrong and Spectra. Peppermint had full intent on dismantling everything her brother made so there was no traces of his work. It had been all day and the only ones left were her and a new employee to Vandelay.
"Man, this thing is heavy. Hey, new guy, bring that crowbar over so we can get this open. The sooner we dismantle this thing, the sooner we can go home," Peppermint said, motioning them over with one hand while she rested her other on her hip. She certainly appreciated their help, their dedication and staying late after everyone clocked out.

The auxiliary lamps should possess the following characteristics: • Broadband spectral emission: Select bulbs capable of emitting broadband spectra, such as halogen bulbs with omnidirectional light intensity distribution. • Uniform illumination: Ensure the auxiliary lamps can create uniform illumination inside the integrating sphere to effectively correct errors caused by the self-absorption effect. Rough Patch
Early CoV
Tyreen paced up and down the length of the Cathedral infirmary waiting room. She was glad that aside from the glass door, the walls of the room were thick metal. The God-Queen couldn’t be caught nervously wringing her hands as she paced like a captive lion. Not that she looked like the God-Queen when she was draped in a too big hooded jacket over a thin tank top, however she couldn’t settle down or stop herself. Troy was in surgery; perhaps the most extensive operation he’d been through besides breaking his jaw when they were teenagers.
She took a deep breath and reminded herself that it would be ok, that this was necessary. It wasn’t his fault he was so fragile, a fact that had been repeated to her by her parents since they’d been born back on Nekrotafeyo. She’d always had to be strong while she watched their parents dote over him, their mother boosting him with her own siren energy when he was running low. Tyreen had never been sickly, only catching a cold once or twice in her childhood,and she had never been severely injured before the incident with the guardians.It had always been so hard to wrap her head around the fact that her twin brother, who had once even been a part of her could be so sickly in return.
It was for that reason that Tyreen was grateful when Allison had sat her down and explained in great detail what they would be doing to Troy in this operation. She had been the one to catch that the scrap contraption Troy called a right arm was pulling his spine out of alignment and exacerbating a congenital defect in his vertebra. Without this operation the damage would worsen,and the neurological symptoms would become unavoidable. Allison had also gotten Troy to agree to getting a neural port installed so that he could actually use the arm instead of just hanging off him like the hunk of scrap it was.
None of that helped now,though,she was still anxious about what was going on beyond the waiting room door. In her mind, images flashed of her brother flayed open on a cold operation table picked through like an animal being dissected. Their fathers' warnings of what the corporations would do to them repeated over these images. She hated how the infirmary smelled, so sterile and clean. It felt fake like that, especially here on Pandora. Nothing should be this clean not even if it was a medical practice.
Tyreen stopped her pacing and shook her head, this was ridiculous. Allison Spectra was the woman who had saved them when she had been sure Troy was about to die in the Promethean slums. She had been their doctor for years at this point there was no reason to think she would suddenly be untrustworthy, especially when she’d brought in one of the best neurosurgeons in the six galaxies to aid in the operation. Troy was literally in the most capable hands he could be in, she just needed to relax.
She sat down in the chair she had left her bag on and fished out her echo-phone. Everyone in the Inner Circle knew what was going on, and Juni had assured her that they would handle things until Troy was stable. Tyreen still couldn’t help but check in on the morning reports, Jaxon had just finished leading the sermon. While it was a relief that the Children of the Vault could run itself without her constant supervision. Tyreen felt like it was all she had control of in this moment. If she truly needed to, she could phone Juni and have her do whatever she needed done, of course she knew that she should just let it rest, for now, and focus on the things at hand but it was comforting to know that one thing at least was always in her control.
She did however open the channel she used to talk to all the department heads. The moment her icon took a green aura indicating she was online she immediately got pinged by Juni.
Juniper (Marketing) : TYREEN! Turn it off!
Juniper (Marketing): You promised you’d look after yourself, micromanaging us isn’t looking after yourself Tyreen. I can handle things while you worry about yourself and Troy, Jaxon is on the alert too she promised to handle anything that comes her way.
Tyreen huffed at the messages, even though they made her feel fuzzy inside. Knowing that Juni was looking after her she couldn’t just not answer.
Tyreen (God Queen): Thanks. I’ll head off now, you remind me to get you a gift basket or three when this is handled.
She closed the app and sifted through some current news articles looking for anything to distract her. Until the door clicked open, one of the nurses stepped out and was almost immediately accosted by Tyreen.
“Is it done? Is he ok? He’s ok right?”Tyreen would never act like this if she thought it would get out into the general public but the medical team was sworn to secrecy the same way the department heads were.
“God-Queen, we aren’t done quite yet. Dr.Spectra wanted to speak with you. She’ll be out in a moment.”The nurse said in a tone that had anyone else used they would have found themselves husked. Today though nobody would be husked, these people were here to do a job.
The nurse disappeared back behind the door and after what felt like entirely too long the familiar face of Allison Spectra stepped into the room. Most of her definable features were masked off by her surgical scrubs but her amber eyes that softened when they focused on Tyreen were unmistakable.
“Ah Tyreen, don’t worry everything’s been going perfectly fine. We’ve installed all the vertebral implants and Dr.Sampson is getting ready to install the neural port. Actually that’s what I wanted to speak with you about, as I’m sure you can imagine it’s a bit of a delicate process and while Dr.Sampson is the best neuro specialist in this arm of the galaxy things can still be a little tricky.”Allison held up a hand as Tyreen began to glare at her.
Tyreen weighed the words carefully. She did not want to jump to any conclusions but Allison more so than anybody else in the CoV would know how seriously Tyreen took her brother's health. How could she not when she had been the one who had found a freshly rained on frantic eighteen year old in the lobby of her private practice on Promethea sobbing and begging for help, that her brother was sicker than he’d ever been. Allison had only ever been here to help, and she knew that.
“Shouldn’t you, y’know be in there then? Not out here with me?”She said after what felt like an insufferably long pause. Surely if the operation was not done, one of the attending physicians shouldn’t be out here with her just because she was wearing a track into the floor.
“I’m not a neurosurgeon if you’ll recall,the nurses can handle watching his vitals. There’s no reason for me to be clogging up the operating room when there’s nothing more I can do.”Allison took her mask and gloves off, shoving them into a pocket of her operating scrubs, then placed a gentle hand on Tyreens leg.”Besides, I figured you could use some company.”
Tyreen said nothing to that. It was true she could use the company. How often did she forget that despite all her bluster she was a person, there was only so much she could shoulder by herself before the bottled up emotions ran over. She said nothing but let the hand remain, a good little reminder that she deserved the comfort of others.

Tyreen didn’t know what to expect when she walked into Troy’s hospital room. The only force driving her forward right now was the need for visual confirmation that her twin was alive and well. Dr.Sampson had used a lot of big medical terms she didn’t really understand while telling her the operation had been successful. To be honest her brain had mostly blocked out everything he’d said after confirming that Troy had taken all the implants well. She knew that anything that she needed clarification on she could turn to Allison for, but nothing would settle her other than seeing Troy herself.
Nothing could have prepared her for what she saw when she entered the room. Time seemed to slow around her as she looked at the heavily bandaged figure that lay in the hospital bed. Her mind immediately registered him as her brother. However,he looked so different in that moment, even when he’d needed his jaw glued back together he still looked like Troy. Laying in the bed now he looked so small.
She was transported back in an instant to Nekrotafeyo, to the days when she would be pulled by her father kicking and screaming away from the bed while her mother would cradle Troy’s tiny body in her lap, how still he would be sometimes. This was just like that only mom and dad weren’t here now to stroke her hair and tell her everything would be alright.
Allison and Dr.Sampson had both warned her that it wouldn’t be pretty, that there would probably be blood seepage,but not to worry unless it seemed excessive.Even so,the bloodstained bandages caught her attention.She was glad that Troy was being pumped full of the best pain killers on the market because even without seeing what lay under the bandages it looked so painful.
It took every ounce of self-control she had to not just touch him with her powers and take the pain away. The doctors had been very clear with her that she could not make the same mistake she’d made with his jaw. He would be laid up for a month at the longest;they had to let his body heal naturally or he would likely be paralyzed if not worse. She perched in the chair by his bedside so afraid that if she were to so much as breathe on him he would turn to dust before her eyes.
She hummed softly, the old lullaby their mother used to sing when they were scared or afraid. Leda had so many lullabies that Tyreen felt like she did no justice to. They were, however, one of the last tenuous strands to their mother they had left and in this moment she needed the strength that Leda had always had.

Tyreen was determined to sit vigil at her brother's bedside; she hadn’t left the room in days. When the medical team would come in to check on him she’d excuse herself to the bathroom or go stand in the hallway. She had seen them change his bandages once and that had been one time too many for her. Allison asked her if she’d eaten every time she came in and Tyreen lied through her teeth, she hadn’t left the infirmary ward at all, for once in her life her ability to sustain herself without eating was useful.
She’d fallen out of the habit of checking her echo every ten minutes, if someone needed her attention so desperately they could message her. She was deep in thought when movement at the door caught her attention and Juniper walked in. Tyreen had forgotten that she’d given Juni permission to enter the ward if she so chose to, but she was glad to see a familiar face from outside the ward.
“Hey.”
“Hey.” Tyreen echoed back at her, her gaze never straying. Juniper dragged a chair from the corner of the room and sat next to her God-Queen.
“How’s he doing?” She asked, placing a hand on Tyreen’s shoulder.
“Fine. They’re gonna have him sleep through the worst of it.”
“And how are you doing chica? You look like you haven’t slept in days.”
“I haven’t. Not really at least. I’ve caught a few hours here and there but…I just worry something awful will happen to him while I sleep.” Tyreen rubbed her eyes, she felt like a ghost of herself.
“You can’t hold yourself responsible for that Tyreen. You know that right? This is out of your hands now.” Juni soothed giving the other woman's leg a reassuring squeeze.
“I can though. This is my fault, the fact that he needed the operation at all, the fact he’s so sick all the time. All of it.”
“Would you blame yourself if he was like this and you hadn’t been born the way the both of you had been?”
Silence met the question and after a long pause with no answer in sight Juniper sighed.“ I get it. He’s your family, he’s all you got, but that doesn’t mean you can tear yourself apart like this.”
She sighed again and looked to the door before looking back at Tyreen. “Listen, when I was just a little younger than you my family lived in the Promethean slums. Folks didn’t care about what ended up in the air or water cos we were the underbelly and they were progress. I had a younger sister and I had to sit and watch as she got sicker and sicker and nobody gave a damn. I had to watch my sister suffer and die and accept there wasn’t a damn thing I could do about it. As the older or stronger sibling we so often feel like it’s on us alone to protect our siblings, but we can’t do it all Tyreen.”
“Troy’s a tough guy, and you're literally sitting in one of the best medical facilities on Pandora. He’ll be alright and if he does need you? Shouldn’t you be in the best condition you can be to provide for him. Please just get something to eat, have a nap. I’ll stay here and watch him for you Ty.”
Tyreen looked up at Juniper, there were tears in both of their eyes and a look of understanding Tyreen had never seen from another person before. She had always thought her burdens were things she couldn’t share with anyone else, she hadn’t even considered that other people would feel powerless in such a situation. She figured that regular people just accepted that other peoples lives were out of their control. For Juniper to understand her pain and be willing to watch over Troy in her place, it touched her. Juniper was among the few people Tyreen considered a genuine friend and this only cemented that thought for her.
She got up slowly, feeling a bit dizzy. Perhaps she did need to eat more than she thought she did. She gave Juniper a small tired smile.
“Promise you’ll call if anything changes.”
“You’ll be the first to know hun.” Juni patted her shoulder and tilted her head towards the door. “Go on, go take care of yourself.”

Oh...
So, I’ve just had a certain conversation in Byzantium, during The Outer Worlds. And I know now what’s actually going on in Halcyon.
Oh, crap.
Also, MASSIVE spoilers. Do not read this unless you’ve at least got to Byzantium and talked to a certain rogue academic. (If you’re scratching your head about what I’m referring to here, AVOID this post. Seriously.)
They’re running out of food.
Fuck.
Or actually, if I’m parsing the context correctly, there are enough crops, but the nutritional balance is all wrong. People just aren’t getting the right vitamins and minerals. Bluntly, the Halcyon Colony is utterly shafted.
Thinking about it, several things immediately make sense.
1. The abandonment of the Hope. The Board think they’re keeping down the number of hungry mouths this way.
2. The sheer volume of hyper-aggressive marauders. This was something that had been nagging me. Given how bad conditions are in the corporate towns, I had wondered why more people didn’t just turn deserter, quietly walk away and found their own townships out in the great empty. In fact it’s likely that lots of people have tried, only to find their vegetable gardens fail to bloom, either forcing them back to the townships, or into violent aggression. (The marauders behave the way they do because they’re basically starving.)
Abigale’s group were able to survive because they were lucky enough to have the resources of a full botanical laboratory, which presumably gave them an edge no-one else had.
3. The passivity of the near-enslaved corporate populations. Vitamin deficiencies and protein deficiency can impair cognitive function. Potassium springs to mind, here. (Your nervous system works partly through the exchange of potassium ions; without them, the electrics literally stop.) People are exhausted, tired, ill ... and just can’t think straight anymore.
One wonders if perhaps the star Halcyon has slightly-odd, non-solar chemical element abundance-ratios, and there’s less potassium than in Sol? This would in turn affect the chemistry of Halcyon’s planet-forming disc, which would in turn alter the chemistry of planetary soils, so...
(Also, what a fucking stupid mistake on the Board’s part. Did they not think to take a fucking spectrum of the star’s light? A simple back-to-back comparison with Sol would tell you something was off! For fuck’s sake, there’s a massive potassium feature at 1.27 microns! It’s prominent enough that you can resolve the fucker in brown dwarf spectra, for goodness sake! It’s not subtle! AAAAAAaaaaargh! Did they even talk to a single scientist when they started this colony?)
4. The Board’s weird fixation on expansion onto Groundbreaker. On the face of it, it’s not really that obvious why they’re so obsessed with it. I mean, Groundbreaker is a useful port, yes, but they could build their own, right?
But Groundbreaker is also an actual fucking starship.
The Board is trying to muscle in onto Groundbreaker because in the worst-case scenario, Groundbreaker could fucking leave.
5. The weird fixation on saltuna on Terra 2, despite the fact that the fish won’t thrive there. On the face of it, this is mad. Wandering around Edgewater, I was puzzled by the absence of vegetable gardens. Why didn’t they just try growing normal food instead, out on all the fields outside? I assumed it was due to the security situation, related to all the marauders. Actually what I suspect is going on now is that the Board is just fucking desperate, and clutching at straws.
6. And the kicker? Here’s why the Board fundamentally CAN’T solve Halcyon’s problems...
The other thing is that there’s a very obvious solution the Board has apparently bypassed: vitamin pills.
But of course to make it work, you’d have to give them to everyone in the colony - it’s a collective-action problem, not an “unsympathetic individuals with bad life choices” thing. Basically, it’s the sort of thing - in economics jargon, an “externality” - that you have to pay for through general taxation. The Board has zero popular legitimacy - it’s a self-selecting oligarchy - and governs through an extremist-libertarian ideology. It can’t adopt any kind of collective-action response, because every aspect of its own ideological structure militates against it.
It’s actually possible that the Board haven’t even thought about issuing vitamin pills.
Also, it explains why Dr Chartrand is dealing with such poor resourcing. Frankly, in context, it’s no surprise her project is in a mess. In fact, it’s actually a minor miracle that it exists at all.
7. Why has it taken 70 years for the situation to reach near-meltdown?
At a guess, I think because of shipping coming in through Groundbreaker. Perhaps until relatively recently, the Board was able to import enough goods to somewhat-offset the growing food crisis throughout Halcyon. However, as ambient conversations on Groundbreaker make clear, the galactic economy is apparently now in recession, and interstellar trade is drying up. Food imports will consist of lots of large, high-mass items that take up a lot of space and have high shipping costs, so across interstellar distances, profits will be marginal even in the good years. In the bad years, my guess would be that the remaining interstellar shipping firms will retrench to things like luxury goods - small items that carry high prices, so have higher margins. Which in turn means that they’ll be carrying fewer and fewer shipments of basic goods.
Again, it’s capitalism that’s killing Halcyon.
8. This also explains Catherine’s obsession with controlling a boarst factory.
I thought she was just a bit mad. Actually she’s not. She’s either trying to corner the market in one of the few remaining foodstuffs, or she’s just looking out for herself - but either way, it does make some sense.
9. Mass Effect had Virmire, The Outer Worlds has Byzantium.
This is very much that kind of “oh my fucking goodness” moment.
Don’t mind me, I’m going to be a while digesting the implications of all of this.

#7yrsago Amped: Daniel Wilson's followup to Robopocalypse is a wild ride through the Singularity's civil war
Daniel Wilson's latest novel is Amped, a post-apocalyptic high-tech apocalypse cast in the same mold as his spectacular debut novel, Robopocalypse. Wilson is a roboticist by trade, and he combines his background in science and engineering with a knack for fast-paced narrative.
Amped begins on the day that the Supreme Court rules that "Amps" -- people who've had neurological amplification -- aren't entitled to the same rights as "normal" people. Amps are a motley bunch. The amping program started out as a form of "government cheese" -- a welfare handout for the poorest Americans, to help their ADD kids focus in school, to uplift the kids with fetal alcohol syndrome, to give new, functional limbs to shell-shocked veterans rotting in VA beds. Over the years, the amping program is extended to blind people, people with epilepsy, and other people whose disabilities can be overcome with the right combination of new neurocircuitry and physical prostheses.
But, of course, an amp doesn't correct a disabled person's disability up to the level of an able-bodied person. An amped eye isn't a mere substitute for a 20-20 eye -- it blows right past the limitations of our meat-eyes, adding computational pattern-recognition, digital storage, focus at great and close distances, and senstitivity into spectra denied to us poor baseline humans. Likewise amplified cognition, limbs, and so on.
America -- uncomfortable with questions of race and class at the best of times -- goes insane. Suddenly, the privileged elites of America are physically weaker, intellectually slower, and generally less fit than the teeming underclasses whose badge of shame is a tell-tale data-access port on one temple. Laws demanding "equality" for unenhanced humans chip away at the social contract, and a demagogue senator sees a political opportunity and seizes it. The book opens with a front row seat for the Amp's Kristallnacht, and we watch as Owen Gray, the son of a surgeon famed for his R&D efforts on the amp program, races from tragedy to terror. Gray is a schoolteacher whose epilepsy has been treated with an amp, and the book opens with him climbing out on the school roof to try to talk down a formerly learning-disabled amped girl whose machine-enhanced intellect has told her that she will soon be torn to pieces by jealous classmates, who are riding high on a new court ruling that excludes her from the public school system.
When she jumps to her death, Owen is blamed for it. He races to his father's lab, only to find the old man sitting amid a wreckage left behind by a FBI smash-and-grab raid. The political tide has turned. His father orders him to seek out an old colleague in Iowa, and Owen takes to the road. Quickly, he is embroiled in a civil war. As one of the book's antiheroes puts it:
"Look at us. Amps. We're morons smarter than Lucifer. Cripples stronger than gravity. A bunch of broke-ass motherfuckers stinking rich with potential. This is our army. Our people. Strong and hurt. We're the wounded supermen of tomorrow, Gray. It's time you got yourself healed. New world ain't gonna build itself. And the old world don't want to go without a fight."
Wilson has done a very good job with Amped. It's a lot more allegorical and a lot less scientific than Robopocalypse -- the action more about the drama than any kind of rigorous extrapolation. But Wilson taps into something primal with Amped, some of the deep questions about medical ethics, the social effects of technology, and the way that class and politics make technological questions much harder to resolve.
