Moar on Zain:

So Zain's parents had two different religions -- his father was Muslim and his mother was Sikh. He was very close to both parents so was never comfortable "picking a side". In some circles he's known as Zain al-Shahir bin Zakariya, but in others he's known as Zain Singh. When he married he married a Sikh woman so he was more widely known as Singh, but still used al-Shahir bin Zakariya at times. He always felt like a bad Sikh because he couldn't really commit fully to it and felt torn between two worlds.

It got worse after his Embrace, he felt like just by existing he was an abomination, so he cuts his beard every night when he wakes up because he already exists as a vampire, so what's one more sin? (Sullivan refers to it as "spiritual self harm." He ignores him and does it anyway.)

But every now and then when his travels take him through a major city. When he's in a major city he tends to get back to his Sikh roots and keeps his beard and puts his turban back on.

He once ran into Sullivan in NYC like this. Sullivan didn't recognise him because of the beard so Zain basically switched to an Indian accent and fucked with him all night. "You do not recognise me?? your oldest friend?? how could you???" Sullivan was This Close to throwing him through a window with shadow tentacles.

"Who are you?"

"I am Mister Singh, you idiot! How can you not remember me???"

"I have no idea who you are!"

"After everything I did for you! I'm going to tell everyone that Sullivan Blackmoore is ungrateful! He betrays his friends! He pretends not to know them!"

"but what did you DO???"

"EVERYTHING, YOU BASTARD! after all I sacrificed for your little blood business you couldn't even put a good word in to Amicia for me! I went up to Seattle and she was like 'who the hell are you' and I was BETRAYED."

This happens several times before Zain ends up inviting him back to his temporary haven for whatever reason and just goes "hey do you want some blood or something?" in his normal voice and Sullivan almost yeets him out the fucking wnidow.

That’s ZAIN not DOMINIC SHERWOOD. He’s UNKNOWN years old and a REAPER. He may be +Empathetic, +Thoughtful, +Understanding but he’s also -Relentless, -Unwavering, -Unforgiving.

so my new baby is a REAPER. what does that mean you may ask? WELL, i’ll be using the lore linked here but to sum it up, he’s basically death’s lackey and helps guide people to the afterlife, wherever they end up. he’s angel adjacent, was a human at some point long, long, ago, but he has no loyalty to heaven over hell; his entire life’s purpose is just maintaining nature’s order.

that being said, San Fran is his worst nightmare. he probably personally escorted a good majority of the people who were dead to the great beyond and for those who cheated it (cough immortals cough) he HATES them. he thinks they distrupt the normal world order and are an abomination.

he’s used to going back and forth between all the realms so i think he’s REALLY not happy that he’s trapped in the city. it’s unnatural and nothing dead stays dead in this city so what even is his purpose? he’s kind of lost tbh.  so yes if u wanna plot pls hit me up on discord and i will try to get starters out sometime tonight from my starter call !

the barrier being up essentially powered down his ability to do his job. with the dead rising from their graves, and reapers unable to do anything about it, he essentially had to watch as chaos rained down around them.  he could never really be sure where the souls were going - if they went anywhere.  so really, he was in vacation mode: he learned how to roller skate ( ish ), went to a cake tasting, perfected his bartending skills — you know, the essentials. 

primary connections: alistair lennox, reaper buddy.  throughout history they’ve never really gotten along. zain is serious where as al just kind of does his thing whenever he feels like it. zain always resented him bc their mandate was his top priority. san francisco however shifted things. now they are ... amicable? gosh, zain might even call him his best friend. wowza.  alexia kelsey, banshee friend with benefits?? girlfriend?? honestly he doesn’t even know.  before her untimely death, she was a banshee that was constantly Pissing Him Off.  she used her powers to try and prevent deaths, even when he explained that it was nature’s plan.  ( she, in no uncertain terms, told him to fuck right off.  )  she initially hated him bc he reaped her mother and it kind of escalated from there. it was only when she died saving the life of a stranger that he questioned his mandate for the briefest of seconds. he hesitated. not enough to save her life, no, but he never forgot. so when she came back to life, and that barrier was up and they were stuck here,  they met again and things — escalated.  ( they understand each other better now, in ways.  they’ve got a bond that he doesn’t understand but knows now he can’t live without.  ( a reaper developing human feelings.  who’d a thunk it? )

now that the barrier is down, he knows he has to go back to work. escort souls, maintain the order, etc, etc.  he is terrified, however, that death is going to order they start reaping those who cheated their deaths now that the barrier is down.  ( he says no fucking thank you to that one. )
