AMC has ordered a series adaptation of âDark Winds,â based on the Leaphorn & Chee book series by Tony Hillerman.
Zahn McClarnon will star and executive produce with Kiowa Gordon also starring. Graham Roland will write and executive produce. Vince Calandra will be showrunner and executive producer. Chris Eyre will direct the pilot and executive produce. George R.R. Martin, Robert Redford, Tina Elmo and Vince Gerardis will also executive produce. AMC Studios will produce.
âDark Windsâ is described as a psychological thriller that follows two Navajo police officers in the 1970s Southwest, as their search for clues in a grisly double murder case forces them to challenge their own spiritual beliefs and come to terms with the trauma of their pasts.
âWe are excited to welcome Chris Eyre, AMC Studios, and the industryâs top executives for the production of âDark Winds,â part of which will be filmed on the Navajo Nation,â said Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez. âI also welcome my friend, Robert Redford, back to our Nation once again. This week, the Navajo Nation lifted more COVID-19 restrictions to welcome visitors and tourists back to DinĂ© BikĂ©yah. We look forward to welcoming the film crew and we hope this will serve to draw more interest from production companies and draw more tourists to boost our economy and contribute to the âBuy Navajo, Buy Localâ initiative. Thank you to everyone involved in this great venture with the Great Navajo Nation!â
Season 1 will consist of six episodes. It is slated to debut on AMC and AMC Plus in 2022.
âWeâre thrilled by the prospect of authentically telling this story with a group of remarkably talented individuals,â said Dan McDermott, president of original programming for AMC Networks and AMC Studios. âThis is a rich and deeply unsettling psychological thriller set in a world we know viewers will appreciate experiencing for themselves. The series order is the product of several months in a writersâ room staffed entirely by Native American writers, and it is a series that will be brought to life by those storytellers, with a cast led by Zahn McClarnon and featuring Native American actors, filmed largely in and around Native American lands, with the full support and blessing of The Navajo Nation. We are so excited about telling this captivating and entertaining story while rendering this vibrant, rich, wonderful culture and community on AMC+ and AMC.â
McClarnon is no stranger to AMC audiences, having previously appeared in the networkâs series adaptation of the novel âThe Son.â He will also appear in the upcoming MCU-Disney Plus series âHawkeye.â His other TV credits include âFargo,â âLongmire,â and âWestworld,â while his film credits include âDoctor Sleepâ and âBone Tomahawk.â Gordon most recently appeared in the CW reboot âRoswell, New Mexico.â He previously appeared in shows like âThe Red Roadâ and âZach Stone Is Gonna Be Famous.â
âI am honored to be asked to star as the lead in this innovative series for AMC and to executive produce,â McClarnon said. âTo have the support and to be a part of a team which is led by two iconic visionaries as George R.R. Martin and Robert Redford is something to which Iâve always aspired. I believe as Indigenous people we are in a new era of progress in TV and film representation.â
McClarnon is repped by Amsel Eisenstadt Frazier & Hinojosa Talent Agency. Gordon is repped by Paul Byram Associates and GM Management.
âI read my first Tony Hillerman novel in 1986 while filming in New Mexico and was immediately hooked,â Redford said. âHillerman is a master storyteller, his writing is full of mystery and suspense, set amidst a background that blends traditional oral stories of Native American culture and landscape. I am happy to partner with George R.R. Martin and AMC on this project, and am especially grateful for the collaboration with President Nez and The Navajo Nation.â

Doctor Sleep
(Mike Flanagan, 2019)
Following up his 2018 adaptation of Shirley Jackson's Haunting of Hill House for Netflix a year ago, Mike Flanagan returns with material dabbling in similar terrain, a troubled adult haunted by their time in an unsettling house as a child. This time adapting Stephen King, but very much indebted to the cinema of Stanley Kubrick, Flanagan's film falls somewhere between the art of these two inspirations.Â
At two and a half hours in length it seeks (and is not the first cinematic effort of 2019 to try) to capture King's prevalence for the slow burn, simmering, unsettling route to burrowing under your skin, and very much mixes it in with some of the chilly, gruesome atmospherics that ensured Kubrick's adaptation of The Shining remains a classic of the genre on screen.
For me the most impressive thing about this adaptation of this sequel is that Flanagan admirably sidesteps leaning too much on the iconography of Kubrick's movie, using it to lure you into the world in the beginning, and then bringing it back for the final act to give a burst of pop appeal to everyone who has stuck with it for 2 hours (with a little redrum in the middle just to keep your attention) while in between Doctor Sleep is very much its own thing, significantly expanding on the mythology of its predecessor and tipping things more to the fantasy side of the horror/fantasy line that Kubrick's Shining was much more interested in the horror side of.
For anybody interested in that sort of thing there is plenty to like here, and it is very much to Flanagan's credit too that the movie is never a chore to sit through in spite of its fairly daunting length. His cast certainly help ensure that is the case as well, Ewan McGregor making a fine lead (though a very unconvincing product of a union between Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall...) and the scenes in which he gets to bare his soul a little bit he really comes to play, particularly for me in what is maybe the movies highlight, a new take on the original films unforgettable 'Hair of the dog that bit me, Lloyd' scene, in which the unimpressive attempt to recreate an icon is offset by the strength of McGregor's pained work. Rebecca Ferguson is magic on big bad duties, every time the movie gives her a shot to hide her true colours beneath an inviting mask she turns in some of the most memorable work I've certainly seen all year. The too often visible, too little appreciated Cliff Curtis is great too, adding nice depth to his fairly thinly written role, and there's nice turns too from Zahn McClarnon and  Emily Alyn Lind (shout out too to the mighty Carel Struycken, an emblem of a projects twisted, dark heart if ever there was one). Still, maybe the surprise of the whole thing, and certainly key reason it all works is the (if there is any justice) star making turn from Kyliegh Curren. If McGregor is the movies pained, haunted heart, she is its heroic, obstacle obliterating, darkness illuminating soul.
The lot of them fill their characters out well, which is key, because in truth in spite of an admirable attempt to make points quietly via its sprawling, multi stranded narrative, it is ultimately maybe a little thin on character beyond its burrowing into the struggles of the Danny character, which definitely has a negative impact on a film that revolves around multiple points of view. It is there, that in spite of its generous length it never really is able to reconcile its desire to be a sequel to Kubrick's Shining while also paying full faith to King's story.
Indeed, while it is a satisfying, fantasy/horror battle between good and evil with a dab of detective mystery, some very effective, often heavily Shining influenced visuals, and a hell of a mood setting low key score from The Newton Brothers, it really fails to get too deep beneath the skin, thus falling far short of the genre's greats.

The Mosley Review: Doctor Sleep
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/11f52c43755b27882e1002aa557883d7/7efdda18d87effe5-61/s540x810/4a151f3b54586ed4bd459f7ded00f56c64fa8a9f.jpg)
Breathe. Just let it breathe. Many of the horror films we have out now are fantastic and they explore different genres while braking new ground. A common problem most of them suffer from is that they take a huge breath, hold it and don't release until the last 10 - 15 minutes. It's not about the visuals, jump scares or commentary, it is about the crafting of a great story that has time to genuinely breathe and build. This film does exactly that and it was amazing to witness. Now I have not read Stephen King's novel of the same name, but with the knowledge of this film being the sequel story to The Shining was enough to make me excited and hesitant. What I feared is that the same care and stylistic approach that Stanley Kubrick had was not gonna be honored in any way, but as soon as the film started I was put at ease. The great thing about adapting a Stephen King novel is that he gives you plenty to explore with his rich characters and settings where you can go in depth and this film takes full advantage. There are some genuinely thrilling moments and a particularly disturbing scene that could've gone further, but you get enough definition of what's happening. I did feel that the film did miss some of the subtle storytelling elements since it had a bit of a bumpy start.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/90cd507a9916af39badeacbc847c4090/7efdda18d87effe5-e7/s540x810/483aecfbbd64877682d56820cd89103740c27263.jpg)
Ewan McGregor is the grown up version of Dan Torrance and he brings to life the inner turmoil and trauma he suffers from. The fact that he wanted kind of turn away from his âshineâ was intriguing, but he also never truly lets it go. Ewan is so charismatic that he touches your heart in every scene. Carl Lumbly takes on the role of Dick Hallorann, originally portrayed by Scatman Crothers and he was a perfect match. Their scenes together were truly fantastic and heartfelt. Newcomer Kyliegh Curran was outstanding and fun as Abra Stone. She has some of the best visual moments and I loved her chemistry with Ewan. If they were touring around the country finding people with "the shine", I'd watch that movie. Rebecca Ferguson is and will always be great and she was especially sinister as Rose the Hat. Her hippie like ways of seduction were fun and she became truly animalistic once her true intentions were revealed. Zahn McClarnon as her right hand Crow Daddy, was great and equally dangerous. I really did like Emily Alyn Lind as Snakebit Andi as we see through her eyes what living with Rose's group is like. There are more stellar performances from the rest of the cast, but it would be a spoiler if I said anybody else. The whole cast was fantastic all around.
The films' score snaps you right back to the original film and builds upon it. The Newton Brothers did an outstanding job and I was genuinely put on edge with certain pieces of their brilliantly timed score. The visual style and cinematography was on par with Kubrick's eye for landscapes and long steady shots of hallways. The sound design was absolutely stunning in the film. I've been a fan of writer and director Mike Flanagan for a while and each film of his shows that he is a student of classic horror storytelling and this film shows that he did all of his homework. He pays homage to the original film with some astounding recreations of some iconic locations and shot designs. The only problem I had is that it wasn't as subtle enough. In some scenes, dialogue overrides the visual storytelling. Showing is alot better than exposition. Overall, this is definitely a worthy sequel and another great Stephen King film adaptation that is a must see. I loved it and I'm definitely considering it as one of the best films of the year.

DOCTOR SLEEP (FILM REVIEW) *CONTAINS SPOILERS*
Doctor Sleep is the much-anticipated follow-up to the classic 1980 film The Shining as well as an adaptation of Stephen Kingâs 2013 novel of the same name. Director Mike Flanagan (The Haunting of Hill House, Geraldâs Game) has the enormously difficult task of delivering a satisfactory follow-up to Stanley Kubrickâs The Shining and balancing this with faithfully adapting Stephen Kingâs 2013 novel. King has famously rejected Kubrickâs treatment of his original 1977 novel The Shining stating that âItâs like a big, beautiful Cadillac with no engine inside itâ.
Flanagan obviously feels differently about this opinion and has taken the liberty to recreate key scenes from Kubrickâs film including the blood pouring out of the elevator, the door with the word REDRUM (the word Murder backwards) drawn in crude red lettering, a younger Danny riding around the hallways of the Overlook Hotel on his tricycle and running into the twin Grady sisters and the dead woman in the bathtub of room 237. The opening scenes in Florida 1980 show Dannyâs life post the events of The Shining, who lives with his now-widowed mother Wendy Torrance (Alex Essoe).
Cut to 2011 Frazier, New Hampshire. The story follows a now adult Dan âDannyâ Torrance (Ewan McGregor) who has spent years using alcohol to block out his shine and let go of the traumatic events of his past. He quickly befriends a local named Billy Freeman (Cliff Curtis) who works at Tennytown, a small outdoor community group. He is also a recovering alcoholic and encourages Dan to attend an AA meeting with him.
Here he meets Dr. John (Bruce Greenwood) who ends up offering Dan a job at a nearby Hospice three days a week. This is where Dan adopts the name Doctor Sleep, as he uses his telepathic powers known as The Shining to help patients and give them comfort in the moments before their death. He also gets an unexpected visit from Dick Hallorann (Carl Lumbly) who continues to provide Dan with guidance and advice. Eventually he is contacted by a young girl named Abra Stone (Kyliegh Curran) via chalk written messages on the blackboard wall of Danâs apartment. She too has âThe Shineâ and Dan becomes something of a mentor for her.
Now we meet the antagonists of the film known as The True Knot. Lead by their leader Rose The Hat (Rebecca Ferguson), they are a cult group of near-immortals who travel around in a convoy of caravans and hunt children who possess the shine and feed off from it. This âsteamâ is essentially the life force which keeps them living longer and preventing them from aging. But there is a price to pay as they must continue consuming the steam to stay alive. They are currently running low.
The group decides to ârecruitâ a new member named Snakebite Andi (Emily Alyn Lind) who gets tracked down at a local theatre and kidnapped. They stumble upon several kids in their travels, including Bradley Trevor (Jacob Tremblay) who plays baseball and gets kidnapped walking home. When they feed off from him, Rose discovers that a âLookerâ was interfering and witnessed the gangâs feeding frenzy on the young boy. She also discovers that her levels of steam are huge.
This sets up a deadly game of cat and mouse between Rose The Hat and Abra, with Rose trying desperately hard to track down where Abra is located and using her powers to search through her mind. After being made aware of this danger, Dan enlists the help of Billy to unbury the body of Bradley Trevor aka âThe Baseball Boyâ and use his baseball glove as a conduit to track down the location of The True Knot so that theyâll know when to expect them.
Cut to an intense shoot out between Dan, Billy and the members of the True Knot. It doesnât end well with Crow Daddy (Zahn McClarnon) kidnapping Abra in his van. More telepathic tricks ensure and eventually Abra ends up escaping the situation.
This all sets up the final act at the iconic Overlook Hotel with a showdown between Rose The Hat and Abra. The musical score by The Newton Brothers makes some welcome nods to Wendy Carlosâ original, especially as Dan and Abra are driving up the mountain, surrounded by a dark snowy landscape. They also use the technique of mimicking a heartbeat sound which increases and decreases in intensity throughout the film.
If you thought Flanagan was done with The Shining references, youâd be dead wrong. Thereâs literally dozens of flashbacks, recreated scenes and Easter eggs to find here. The highlight for me was the conversation Dan has with Lloyd The Bartender (Thomas Downing) in the Gold Room. It mirrors that of his late father Jack Torrance (Henry Thomas, originally played by Jack Nicholson) as they both suffered from alcohol addiction. The difference is that Dan managed to overcome his.
Once Dan has successfully powered up the old boiler and turned on all the lights inside the hotel, he and Abra are ready to face-off with Rose The Hat inside the living room where Jack famously typed on the typewriter and started to become mentally unhinged. They pull out all the tricks, forcing Rose to navigate through the massive hedge maze before gathering up all the ghosts of the guests who reside at the Overlook. We also get to see the hotel go up in flames like it did in the original novel of The Shining. Ending the story at the Overlook is very fitting as it ties the two films together.
Director Mike Flanagan certainly packed a lot into this 152 minute film. The pacing can be quite sluggish at times especially when it comes to character development and attention to detail (e.g. Dan Torranceâs struggles with alcohol addiction, introducing the members of the True Knot, Rose The Hat demonstrating her powers). This may leave some viewers confused, especially if you havenât read the book, as not everything is explained such as when Grandpa Flick (Carel Struycken) is âcyclingâ due to not having enough âsteamâ.
However, his approach to the material is very encouraging adding layers of atmospheric tension and visual flair such as rooms rotating on an angle, the unexpected appearance of creepy ghosts, Dan and Abraâs eyes becoming white when they âshineâ to their full potential and members of the True Knot having a faint blue glow in their eyes when theyâre inhaling steam from victims. Itâs good to see that Flanagan didnât try to directly copy Kubrickâs style of directing but instead using The Shining as a template and adding fresh elements to his film. Overall, this was a pretty satisfying follow up movie to The Shining. ***1/2
