I’m going to do this like a timed essay and just set a timer for 5 minutes and write until it goes off.

Do you like aliens? Do you like sci-fi? Do you like weird and/or fucked up bullshit? Well if you said yes I have the ship for you! Imagine a weird middle schooler (terribly relatable, I know) and instead of being cripplingly lonely they have one person who is just as weird as them, lonely as them, and understands them implicitly. Doesn’t that sound great? WELL TOO BAD! They hate each other but in like a complex frenemies kinda way where they both care for and respect each other but in the context of wanting to beat the shit out of each other. They grow up in this strange complex relationship that slowly develops into a romance that neither one of them want to acknowledge but that they both crave desperately. So now it’s yearning until one of them breaks.

That’s the best way I can explain the appeal more generally.

description about the AU:

in short, both in the show and in the comics, as we saw Zim most often protected Dib not only from deadly, but also from pathologically dangerous risks during adventures

and what would have happened if at one point Zim had not kept an eye on this self-confident brat and had not managed to protect him from a truly life-threatening incident, but Dib was lucky enough to miraculously survive?

Zim has mostly been really soft on Dib, but now he would rather start courting him in addition to just visiting, and Zim would also watch and teach Dib to use three fingers instead of four, remembering and scolding him for behaviour like an immortal and almost dead...

in fact, Zim courting about Dib as for the person closest to him and he learns to show his feelings for him in the right way so that Dib knows it's not over for him and at least someone needs him

+ dramatic things

Zim sat by his bed for days and waited for Dib to feel better and come to his senses, he was more worried about Dib's condition than anyone else and still acts up

Dib suffers from suicidal thoughts and deviations he feels inferior and ugly bc of which he simply hates himself, he also refused the prosthetics that his father had extended to him

Zim, in turn, was traumatized by the incident with Dib, so he tries to be around him more often, softer towards him and more caring, even abandoning his assigned mission

accident story:

Dib lost his eye on an unsuccessful paranormal expedition

his physical injuries are related to falls from heights, sharp objects and trees, he mainly defended himself against his hands, which is why they suffered the most.

You know, I feel like the Roboparents in general don't get enough love in the fandom. But in relation to ZADR they're practically non-existent, and I feel like there's some opportunities that are being missed.

Like, Membrane wants to meet his son's boyfriend's family and Zim really wants to impress him. So he tries using more 1950s videos to train the Roboparents to be the model of a traditional family, but accidentally includes a drama show that's about deconstructing the false narrative of the idyllic 50s life. So in the middle of dinner they start making shockingly racist/sexist remarks, insinuating that Robodad is cheating on Robomom and Robomom is an alcoholic on the verge of snapping and murdering Robodad in a jealous rage.

Or Zim accidentally programs the Roboparents to be homophobic by training them on conservative trad family propaganda. But it ends up working in his favor because it makes Membrane sympathetic toward Zim and want to defend him and his relationship with Dib when previously Membrane kinda thought Zim was a weirdo and a bad influence on his insane son.

Previously I've had the idea of the Roboparents getting more sentient and acting more like real people in general following Roboparents Gone Wild. So in a ZADR scenario that could translate to them just naturally taking an interest in their "son's" love life. So you could have jokes where they attempt to offer wholesome dating advice that's complete nonsense. They could learn that it's normal for parents to threaten their child's boyfriend with a shotgun so they just straight up try to murder Dib. Robodad could treat Zim like he's daddy's little princess who's virginity must be protected at all costs while Robomom becomes a creepy boy mom who doesn't want Dib to steal her precious baby boy away. Or they actually really like Dib and treat him like he's already their son-in-law and ask when he and Zim are going to give them grandchildren. Maybe even though Dib knows it's all fake algorithmically generated half-coherent nonsense the facsimile of parental affection still touches his poor heart. Maybe it even makes him realize that even though it's fake and badly emulated there's still some truth to the idea that this is closer to how it should be than what his home life actually is.

alright so dont judge me...but this is a zip file full of hundreds and hundreds of invader zim/jthm (*cough* the zadr folder is the biggest) fanart and pixels and just weird zim related pics from years of fandom obsession...i it scraped from my old laptop for your viewing pleasure...now i was young and stupid (and still am stupid) so i didnt do the best job at naming and organizing and crediting people because at the time i literally just saved pictures to horde them. so please just use these for your own sick enjoyment and nothing more nefarious. ok ily bye.

How I like to imagine the ZaDr dynamic. How they sift from enemies to something more. And what I fucking love about ZaDr.

Some thoughts.

Zim and Dib, two emotionally neglected kids. Having little to no friends or any emotional support system… They became the primary attachment figures for each other: Based on them being enemies this relationship/development… it’s bound to be very complicated and messy.

There are various emotions mixed up in their dynamic. The initial hatred, frustration, and antagonism because they literally are enemies… but also the feelings of bonding, caring, appreciation, respect, and understanding. Then when getting older, also attraction, passion, and all those fuzzy feelings get mixed in.

But essentially, all the positive emotions that one develops and gets to experience with a close person like love, adoration, connection, tenderness, compassion, or simply joy… all those also get mixed up with the ‘negative’ ones.

The brain quite literally connects feelings of affection and connection with violence, aggression, cruelty, abuse, and brutality. This is trauma bonding, reward-based learning, and positive conditioning.

Them being obsessive and excessive as a fundamental part of their core personality only adds as a multiplier.

When this happens in a critical life phase (being young and in adolescence), having nearly no other positive influences in life and being neglected (emotionally especially), this connection the brain made will get so deeply internalized and won’t ever truly go away.

It could also connect to your sexuality and all that.

(There are real-life equivalencies)

What I’m getting at is, all this makes just so much sense!

This dynamic and their relationship is super complex and nuanced because of this.

Their relationship is incredibly intense and yes totally toxic but also compassionate.

Them fluctuating between high psychological distress/tension (hating, fighting, obsessing, loving, being in denial about your existence, generally trauma responses e.g., through neglect, loneliness, abandonment) and then them experiencing the sweet release through the aspects of their dynamic (connection, closeness, intimacy) as mentioned.

This stuff becomes quite simply addictive to someone.

This is why they can get crazy shit feral/hardcore with each other and also feel pleasure while doing so.

Like cutting each other up (or open), taunting, fighting, beating each other...

But because I’m a sucker for ambivalence and stark contrast, I like to imagine them being very, very cute with each other as well (occasionally even without showing the bad stuff while being cute), still toxic, still abusing and batshit crazy but absolutely meaning everything to each other and deeply caring.

Fluffy but in an obsessive and excessive way.

They will always somewhat be mean to each other and never shy to argue, even if just in a teasing and more lighthearted manner.

This is their love language after all.

This is how they show they care, and it’s what they know.

Also, this is just how they are personality-wise: thick-headed, intense people with strong opinions and even stronger egos.

And let’s not forget about stupidness, dorkyness, and comedy sprinkled in.

ZaDr is a fantastic way to deep dive into complex inner psychological human workings and I love exploring this.

(I love love love intense emotions.)

It’s even comforting in a way, if you ask me.

Hate and love are so close for a reason.

It’s the most intense we can feel.

And I mean, I guess we all (or many of us) can somehow relate to not liking or even hating a close one (even if only sometimes). But when a real deep bond is established with someone and when affection is also part of your connection (even if only sometimes), this stuff just doesn’t go away. Toxic relationships are messy and certainly not easy nor black and white. You just understand this emotion… of how complicated you can feel about someone, and what complexity this can bring with it.

Note that, this is how I like to imagine it. One can have a totally different perspective on it and this is valid as well!

Also this is romanticized, fiction and reality operate differently. Cognitive dissonance baby.
