Hey everyone.

I know, it's been ages since I posted here. I've missed a lot, I'm sure. I'm just popping in here to say, take care of yourself. I know things are pretty grim right now in the US, so if you're stressed out over everything, take a few minutes to do something nice for yourself. Make yourself some tea, or hot chocolate. Light that scented candle you've been saving. Grab some comfort snacks. Check in with your friends and chat with them.

It won't be easy, but we'll survive.

This is something of a parallel multiverse. Some of the faces will be familiar, some might be new. There won’t be any Duskwood involved in my plotline, which changes events around enough that this will definitely be a fresh story.

Not too much that's new right now. I'm just in the process of trying to get through finals season and catch up on old work that I haven't turned in yet. Stressful time, especially given all the stuff that happened last time I tried this whole college thing, but I'll manage. Thanks for asking!

A “small” bio for all my characters

This is all OOC, by the way, I just don’t want to deal with the usual “this is an author’s note” formatting while trying to make the bios look not awful.

Spoilers up to the most recent letter as of writing, letter 189.

If you’re confused about all the interpersonal shit that’s going down, this probably won’t help you very much, but you’ll at least get to see part of the author herself’s take on what’s happening.

Honestly this has no real purpose, I just made it because I was bored.

Yuvon (Author self-insert... sort of):

Actual name: Unknown

Age: 18, 19 in January

Sexuality: Asexual, goes back and forth between calling herself bi and omniromantic. Tends to call herself bi because more people know the term.

Pronouns: She/Her (subject to alteration)

Role in Duskwood: The Detective

Connected entities: “Pallor Mortis,” Sweetly Sleeping

Phobias: Stinging insects, has developed arachnophobia after being tortured with spiders

The protagonist. She has split into two people in the wake of Inky’s temper tantrum and Troublemaker’s decision, but they’re still built off of the same base person she was before she split.

More than a bit of a doormat at times and forgiving to a fault, she states that she only learned social skills relatively late and has trouble socializing. She has stated that even before the letter game, she was struggling with mental illness since she was relatively young. While her diagnosis was never revealed, she has shown some indications of anxiety, depressive behaviors, and low self-esteem, and has had panic attacks and self-harmed during the course of the letter game.

She has built somewhat of a dependency on the letters, and would drop everything to help out a letter writer who needed her, especially one who writes in regularly.

She gets along particularly well with most human characters, as well as Dream, Goldie, Walker, and Clover.

Troublemaker:

Troublemaker, one of the two current versions of Yuvon, is technically the “original” Yuvon, as she created Yu when Troublemaker still had entity powers. Troublemaker named herself after Domino/Fay’s nickname for her, and mostly stays in Domino’s universe. She’s a lot less dependent on and obsessive over the letters than base Yuvon, and is simultaneously more and less sane than base Yuvon. While her anxiety, self-esteem, and depressive behaviors have all improved, she’s grown to be more reckless than base Yuvon, and has taken serious risks with plans mostly conjured up on the fly, leading to her even sometimes fighting entities directly.

She made some sort of decision recently, which hurt Jake quite a bit and made him feel like she abandoned him. She currently is the holder of The Knife. While she still holds guest-protagonist status, she’s more the supporting character in Domino’s story than the protagonist in Yuvon’s story by now.

She gets along better with Clover and Domino than Yuvon did, and currently has a very negative relationship with Jake.

Yu:

Connected entities: “Pallor Mortis,” Sweetly Sleeping, “Venn��

Despite being a “copy”, and not the original Yuvon, she acts far more like the original Yuvon than Troublemaker does. However, recently, her mental health has taken a turn for the worst. Some characters tend to gloss over her as “not the ‘real’ Yuvon”, Jake is taking out his rage at Troublemaker on her, despite her not being involved in the situation, she’s still reeling after having gone through Duskwood’s episode 9, the entire “Crow Crew” (Duskwood group) minus Jake is frozen in time, and all her friends and family outside Duskwood and the letter game still have no memory of her ever existing.

Struggling with severe feelings of isolation and abandonment, due in no small part to Jake’s attitude towards her, she has turned to the letters and to a new, friendly entity named Venn for comfort. Stalker’s timing in returning to the letter game was very, very fortunate.

While her relationship with Jake is suffering, and may even be worse than what’s between Jake and Troublemaker, Yu is fairly desperately trying to fix it. She also likes Venn quite a bit, due to him consistently keeping her company and defending her, is a little bit closer with Rai and Walker than Troublemaker is, and currently feels very much positively towards Stalker for reappearing at a point when she really, desperately needed people to talk with.

Jake:

Age: estimated around the range of 22-25, but he’s not about to say either way

Sexuality: Straight

Pronouns: He/Him

Role in Duskwood: Take a wild guess

Connected entities: Sweetly Sleeping, [ ;) ]

While he started as a base Jake, his experience with the letter game has shaped him and shaped his unofficial and unstated relationship with Yuvon. While the two did fight previously, due to the stress of the pocket plane, the two always apologized and made up. But something recently has changed. He’s acting, quite frankly, completely out of character, and has clearly stated that he no longer has any interest in either of the Yuvons and seems to hold a lot of resentment towards them, resentment that he takes out on Yu on the regular. If he keeps up like this, he’s going to end up completely isolating himself.

“Pallor Mortis”/”Inky”/”Black Ink”:

Name: n/a, and too many nicknames to list

Title: Unknown

Domain: Unknown

Age: Less than a year old; was created at the end of 2020 or so

Pronouns: The letter writers (and the author) use it/its, but Inky doesn’t care, so go wild

Connected humans: Yuvon, Troublemaker a bit more than Yu; to a lesser extent, anyone who interacts in any way with the letters, more so if they write in

Associated places: The pocket plane, the dead world, to a lesser extent woods

The Paper That Rots was, according to Dream, an artificial creation built to be a weapon to kill entities; specifically, to kill a hivemind entity called The Assimilator that was destroying Dream’s old world. However, Inky first fed all the last remaining people, animals, plants, etc that weren’t yet corrupted by The Assimilator to it, and then, through the attention of the entire world on itself, ate the life force of literally everything and everyone but one person, therefore forcing the Assimilator into a single body, and ripped away the crust of the world underneath the entity, throwing it through the mantle and all the way to the outer core of the planet before sealing the crust of the world again and wandering off into the universe at large.

Now, of course, it’s the sadistic, condescending, maliciously compliant asshole we all know and hate today. It runs the letter game, but actually isn’t very strong itself at the moment- Dream reveals that it passively eats a small amount of energy from anyone who pays attention to it, though it could take a lot more if it wanted to; it a one point might have killed everyone in the letter game that way if Dream didn’t intervene.

While Inky is capable of diplomacy, it seems to much prefer casting itself in the role of the antagonist and making everybody hate it as much as possible.

Inky will defend the audience from death, and gets pissy if anyone messes with its game and Yuvon/Jake too much, but does this more because it’s necessary than out of any affection.

Flower:

Name: Lily

Title: n/a

Domain: Innocence/Purity

Age: Unknown, likely old

Pronouns: She/Her

Connected humans: None anyone knows of

Associated places: None known

Not a lot is known about Flower, only that she’s an omnicidal killer; that she fights for some weird, twisted definition of justice and innocence; that she knows what Inky did and hates Inky for it; and that she couldn’t care less about collateral damage.

She is stronger (and older) than Inky, but an Inky-merged Yu and Troublemaker managed to defeat her (with some help.)

Dream:

Name: Unknown, nickname “Dream”

Title: Sweetly Sleeping

Domain: Sleep, possible others, strong association with water

Age: Unknown. Was human before being an entity, and has been an entity for as long as Inky has.

Pronouns: She/They, people in the letters generally use they/them because no one has asked her about their pronouns yet.

Connected humans: Both Yuvons, and to a lesser extent anyone with a spark

Associated places: Any place with water. The more, the better. Other than that, they only really appear in minds or as dreams; Dream isn’t big on that whole “physicality” thing.

Dream used to be human, and knew of and may have participated in the project that created Inky. She doesn’t like Inky, and quite happily gives up what information they can to take Inky down. While she started out basically powerless, they’ve built up enough energy to be able to sustain themself and take actions now. They are friendly to human writers in general, especially those that interact with her, but is at least initially wary of every single entity they encounter, though it isn’t impossible to earn Dream’s trust.

While all Yuvons are fond of and feel for Dream, and have no doubts that Dream is an ally, they all react a bit oddly towards Dream nonetheless.

Recently, Dream has been trying to say something about the Yuvon and Jake situation, but something keeps blocking them. There was a substance that might have been their blood on the last letter where they tried that, where they stopped writing completely mid-sentence.

Venn:

Name: Venn

Title: Unknown

Domain: Unknown

Age: A couple hundred years

Pronouns: He/Him

Connected humans: Yu, many many others

Associated places: Anywhere in Yuvon's home universe.

Not a lot is known about Venn for now, but he seems to have taken a liking to Yu, and is defending her. He's a little catty and nasty with his words at times, though...

What is a soul?

(Okay, so, none of the Yuvons are going to be answering letters for a bit; the letter exchange system has completely fallen apart, because Inky was pretty brutally attacked by the same entity that killed Dream that one time, and it is currently comatose.

So, in random meta things I’ll probably never get to talk about in the letter game itself: What, in this world, is a soul?

First: it’s different for everybody. Writers, do whatever the hell you want with your concept of souls. You could even have your characters not have souls at all and have them completely unaffected by this.

But, here’s what Yuvon’s soul is.

It’s what makes Yuvon Yuvon. Across the multiverses, there are a hundred million Yuvons. Some were born with different chemical arrangements in their brain, and turned out to be different people that way. Some had different circumstances growing up, and turned out different that way.

In other words, the soul is the “nature” of “nature vs. nurture”. It’s the reason that no matter which Yuvon you meet, she’s still Yuvon in some way.

Dear Diary,

I must admit, I am far from being in a good place physically.

Only a few days ago I must have passed out while I wrote a letter to Yuvon's Jake. The exhaustion was too great. The letter was absolutely usele

Speaking of Yuvon, she contacted me recently. It felt... strangely refreshing to hear from her since the incident.

However, my suspicions of falling ill turned out to be true, which adds to the stress immensely. Such weaknesses and distractions are greatly unwelcomed.

I am unsure how to progress further. My options are limited.

I will come back to you later, dearest diary. I must find a solution for this. Then you can know the rest.

Guilty of basically all of these XD

The only thing I’d add is that sometimes, the filler words or phrases are part of a character’s voice. Jake as I write him, for example, takes a sort of formal tone when writing where he doesn’t use contractions, or uses seven words where two would suffice. Example I wrote just today:

“I find it probable whatever you did was powered by an outside influence, especially coupled with the fact that your entity is censoring the majority of it, though that is likely of little comfort to you.”

Now, if I filter out the filler...

“For what it’s worth, it probably wasn’t your fault, since your entity erased most of the letter.”

Yes, it’s way shorter, and it eliminates the slight problem of the run-on sentence the original has. But the second sentence sounds like a generic person, not like Jake.

Character voices can be hard. Be careful you don’t make it even harder on yourself.

Narrative Botox: Filler Words and Phrases to Look Out For

If you’re planning on publishing traditionally, chances are you keep a sharp eye on your word count. Literary agents and publishing houses are on the hunt for the best quality stories that they can print for the cheapest price (using the least paper and ink), so you have a higher chance of gaining representation if you can crank your novel out in the least words possible.

However, filler words and phrases aren’t only the enemies of aspiring traditional authors; every writer—fanfic, novelist, journalist, you name it!—should try to eliminate filler from their stories to assure more concise and high-quality writing. Oftentimes, filler contributes nothing but clutter, and without it, your narrative can flow smoother and in a more sophisticated manner.

But how do you know what’s filler and what’s not? Here are some tips on how to Ctrl+F and kick this narrative botox to the curb!

Filler Words

1. Just

A writer’s worst enemy, and the bane of my manuscripts’ existences. Eliminating all the ‘just’s can cut down your word count by hundreds.

2. “That” as a conjunction

It’s an unnecessary addition to a sentence, which will be more streamlined without it.

Example: “He said that he wouldn’t do it again.”

Revised: “He said he wouldn’t do it again.”

3. “Now” as an adverb

“Now” is essential if you’re talking about the past and present, but when you’re using it to draw attention to a particular statement or point.

Example: “Now, I didn’t think it’d get so out of hand.”

Revised: “I didn’t think it’d get so out of hand.”

4. Redundant adverbs

These adverbs serve no purpose because the verbs they’re describing already imply the way the action is performed.

Whispering softly

Yelling loudly

Crying sadly

Laughing happily

5. “Telling” words

These words are redundant, especially when using first person, because in describing an event, we can already assume that the characters are experiencing it.

Seeing/saw

6. “Clarifying” words used to portray definiteness or indefiniteness

Although these are meant to help out the readers get their bearings on a situation, all they do is come across as wishy-washy! Be concise and sure of yourself!

1.“Let out (vocal noise)”

Use the verb instead!

Example: “He let out a sigh.”

Revised: “He sighed.”

2. Using passive voice

Passive voice inflates your word count by including various “to be” verbs into the prose. Passive voice involves actions happening to a subject rather than the subject performing an action, and as a result isn’t as riveting to the reader as active voice; even if it wasn’t a matter of word count, you’d still want to get rid of it anyway!

Example: “The boy was bitten by the dog on his arm.”

Revised: “The dog bit the boy on his arm.”

3. Describing the wrong noun

Many writers will be as specific as possible about what “thing” is affected by the event they’re describing, when it’s much simpler to take a step back and write about something more general.

Example: “The level of water rose.”

Revised: “The water rose.”

4. Phrasal verbs

Phrasal verbs are the combination of two or three words from different grammatical categories—a verb and an adverb or a preposition—to form a single action. Usually, these phrasal verbs can be replaced by a single-word verb.

“Ask for” can be replaced with “request”

“Bring down” can be replaced with “reduce”

“Come across” can be replaced with “find”

Etc.

5. Clarifying phrases

Same reason as clarifying words. Get to the point!

6. Remember your contractions!

Even if your story takes place in olden times, I can guarantee that if you never use any contractions ever, your story’s gonna be a clunky mess. But sometimes you’re in the moment, consumed by the poetic power of the muses, and forget that this isn’t a soap opera; so make sure you check that you’ve been using your contractions!

It is, it was, it would, she is, would not, should not, is not, does not etc.

7. Inflated phrases

These phrases can be replaced with more concise words.
