"you look pretty,"

the chatter of passing people from beneath your open window nearly consumes each syllable of his compliment, tone much too soft to be deciphered through the hustle and bustle of the city. a noise partnered with the all too familiar serenade of cicadas and the steady stop and go of traffic. the life all around you so loud that yushi, in all his gentle and tender words, is almost forgotten. washed away with the sudden strike of high tide, only to be resurrected by the lull in the surf and your significantly fine tuned hearing.

"yeah?" a question poised in the undertaking of an action as you pull your shirt from over your head, collar getting stuck on the angle of your chin. a problem solved as quickly as it had arisen with one harsh tug until the article of clothing is tossed absentmindedly onto the bed behind you.

he swallows softly, eyelashes fawning against his cheeks as his head tilts upon his shoulder. catlike eyes follow the curves of your naked spine, tracing over every muscle, every beauty mark, every imperfection and division. his answer is one made without thought, an immediate response that even he finds to be said much too instantaneously. "yeah,"

"thank you," you unbutton your jeans, shaking them off the bone of your hips with a few light steps and a yank at your beltloops. balancing on one foot as you slide them down your legs, kicking them off with a rightward snap of your ankle.

"have i ever told you that?"

you crouch down to one of your wardrobe drawers, sliding it open in a single, fluid motion. tongue caught in between your teeth as you sift through the clothing, fingertips slipping over the folded fabric once, twice, then three times over until you've successfully found the bottoms you've been searching for. "that i'm pretty?"

he nods, leaning against the doorframe as he watches you stand to your full height. a motion undertaken with little thought, one that he realizes you did not catch with the continued silence on your part. so instead, he offers you a hum of affirmation. one which stands out from the noise of your backdrop, a sound much too sweet too blend into anything else.

you pause, thinking for a moment before tugging on your pants. brows furrowed and nose scrunched as you button them, slender fingers dropping to the zipper. despite the thorough mundanity of the action, your red-haired counterpart gazes upon you as if you were dancing a pirouette la seconde. though, he supposes that he would watch paint dry if you were the one who had put it there. "i'm not sure,"

"well i do," he says, lips parted and tongue caught gently between them, expression tensed as if it were a matter of life or death, "think you're pretty, i mean,"

you laugh, eyes flicking upwards to meet his gaze. eyelashes upon eyebrows, the upwards curve of your lips obscured by the angle of your chin. your inflection is genuine, earnest. "so are you,"

despite the warmth which spreads throughout his chest at the register of your reply, your words are anything but. they're cool. refreshing and short-lived, like a breeze in the unrelenting gaze of the summer sun. one he wished would lay upon his skin for even a second longer, yearning for the chill which lays upon his spine and the sigh of relief which escapes his tongue.

swallowed in the heatwave of june, you're the only one who could make yushi freeze. and perhaps that's why his next words slip off his tongue with such ease, such an unconsciousness that he barely registers that he was the one who said them.

"i was in love with you last year,"

if you were at all startled by the sudden admission, you didn't show it. instead busying yourself with adorning your top chosen just a few moments prior. you're focused on straightening your shirt, attention unfocused on the boy in front of you. and for once, yushi's glad to not hold every ounce of your consideration. for if he did, if he was met by your gaze (the one which makes his heart drop to his knees) then he's positive he might explode.

your tone is nonchalant, an underlying hint of amusement evident in the ending intonation of your vowels. "really? did my failing grade in economics charm you?"

he shrugs, attempting to keep his tone every bit as casual as yours (it doesn't work, in fact, he sounds too much like a schoolboy with a crush for his replies to be considered anything but lovesick). "a bit,"

"glad it did something," you laugh, finally picking up your head to meet his gaze. a movement which encourages the sudden flight of a million and one butterflies, battering and banging against the walls of his stomach and sending his cheeks burning a shade of red most akin to his hair. "but now?"

yushi clears his throat, a last ditch effort for any sliver of composure (one which reaps no rewards). "what about now?"

arching your brow, you shoot him a incredulous look. as if what you were referring too was all but obvious (it was, but he's trying so desperately hard to wear an aloof facade despite the feeling of it unraveling with each and every glance in your direction). "you said last year. was in love. past tense,"

your words are spoken with a hint of haughtiness, a puffed up pride which sits upon your head like a golden crown. as if you had just gotten him to admit something you already knew and won the cat-and-mouse game which the two of you have been rattling between for the last year and a half. something that for all intents and purposes, you had. a trend which he was all but reluctant to continue. an unwillingness that lasts for just a fraction of a second. he huffs, rolling his eyes and crossing his arms in a show of faux annoyance. "i'm not giving you the satisfaction of using present tense,"

"but you would use it?"

"yeah," like the initial confession, the answer comes easy. slipping down from upon the tip of his tongue as smooth as honey. pooling in the roar of your heartbeat and resting upon the crimson blush of his cheeks. yushi's words are spoken with such an ease, such a natural lilt as if they are the only things in the world which he was ever meant to attest. "i would,"

the sound of door opening and closing, a subtle shuffle of feet padding against the ground… yushi was home. you closed your laptop and rubbed your tired eyes.

“i’m back, come here!” he called cheerfully from the kitchen. with a small stretch, you left the room.

stepping into the room, you noticed two take out boxes on the counter.

“how was it?” you asked, walking up to your boyfriend lazily. yushi smiled and wrapped his arms around your waist.

his friends invited you to a dinner but you sadly had to turn it down – the assignments just kept piling in your desk. so yushi went alone.

“fun, as usual. sion got drunk” yushi giggled and pointed at the boxes “i got you some goodies, i know you haven’t eaten much today. but sion… ah, what an idiot. let me look for a video. he was saying something dumb, it was so funny–”

“you got me take out?” you asked, voice small.

yushi halted his movements, finger freezing above the screen of his phone. then, he smiled tenderly.

“of course!” he answered, as if it was the most natural thing in the world.

and while he kept looking for the video, you fought back tears.

such a mundane thing. no one did that before for you, not without asking.

and then, here’s yushi. taking food for you, knowing that you skipped a meal.

“i took dessert too, i thought you’d like it” he hummed and you smiled, blinking harshly. you will not cry because of such a small thing– “i can warm it up for you, if you want. oh, there it is! wait, are you crying?”

“no…” you whined and quickly buried your head in his chest, holding him close. yushi slowly wrapped his arms around you, shocked.

“are you okay?” he asked, worried.

“even more than okay” you mumbled.

yushi decided to give you some time. whatever the reason was, it must have been valid. whereas you kept sobbing tears of joy because of a simple gesture.

yushi thinks he’s losing it.

it started last week—when he met you.

his friends had begged him to check out a cafe near campus, throwing around excuses about needing a change of scenery to study. yushi knew better. studying was always the last thing on their minds when they were together. but when riku slung an arm around his shoulders and sion dangled the promise of good coffee in front of him, he couldn’t find it in himself to say no.

the cafe was warm and cozy, filled with the scent of freshly brewed coffee and pastries. yushi didn’t think much of it at first. it was just another cafe, just another outing with his friends.

but then he saw you.

you were standing behind the counter, adjusting the straps of your apron before glancing up at him with a small smile. the soft, golden lights of the cafe reflected in your eyes, giving them an almost starry quality. his friends wasted no time rattling off their orders to him, not even sparing a second glance before they darted off to claim a table. now he was left standing there, brain inexplicably stalling as if some pop up screen was blocking it from functioning normally.

“hi! what can i get you?” you asked, your voice bright and clear.

“um… uh, what was it… two raspberry lattes and a caramel soda?”

“i think you meant two raspberry sodas and a caramel latte,” you corrected gently, a small laugh slipping out as you tapped the order into the register.

yushi felt like sinking into the floor at that very moment. “r-right, those please.”

“that’ll be fifteen dollars in total. can i have your name, please?”

“my name?” he echoed dumbly, his voice cracking slightly.

you tilted your head, clearly amused. “so you can claim your drinks when they’re ready, silly.”

“oh- right.” his hand fumbled with his wallet, nearly dropping his card in the process. the tips of his ears burned, and he could already hear sion and riku laughing if they had seen this. “it’s yushi.”

“okay! here you go.” you handed him his change and a buzzer, your fingers brushing his ever so briefly. “you can pick up your drinks when it starts beeping.”

“i… i knew that,” he mumbled, gripping the buzzer tightly like it was a lifeline that would save him from his ever growing embarrassment.

“just making sure.” you winked playfully before turning your attention to the next customer.

yushi moved out of the line on autopilot, his heart thudding loudly in his chest. by the time he reached his friends, he realized he hadn’t even thanked you. the thought lingered even after he had already retrieved the drinks, silently gnawing at him as his friends started chatting about some new game release.

it wasn’t anything special, so why did his mind keep recalling the way you laughed? or the mischievous glint in your eyes when you teased him?

“hey, class ended like five minutes ago, and you’re usually the first one out as soon as the bell rings.”

huh?

yushi blinked, realizing he’d been staring blankly at his notebook. sion was leaning on his desk, one eyebrow raised, his messenger bag slung carelessly over his shoulder.

“your mind’s been absent all day,” riku added, tossing a pen into his backpack with a practiced flick. he nudged yushi’s chair with his foot. “whatcha thinking about, hmm?”

“nothing,” yushi muttered, shoving his notebook into his bag with a little more force than necessary.

sion crossed his arms, a sly grin spreading across his face. “oh, it’s definitely something. wait a second- this started last week, didn’t it? at the cafe.”

riku’s eyes widened as he snapped his fingers. “it’s the barista, isn’t it?!”

yushi froze, his ears instantly turning red and his friends could already tell what that implies without him needing to even speak.

“dude, you’re so obvious.” sion plopped down on the desk next to yushi’s, leaning in with a teasing grin. “you’ve been zoning out ever since we went there. what, are you gonna ask her out or just keep replaying that little meet-cute in your head?”

“i barely know her,” yushi snapped, slinging his bag over his shoulder as he stood. “and i don’t even—”

“you don’t even what?” riku cut in, blocking his path with a smirk. “like her? think about her every day? want to go back just to see her?”

yushi groaned, burying his face in his hands. “you’re both the worst.”

“well, lucky for you,” sion said, patting his shoulder with mock sympathy, “we’re heading back tomorrow. don’t say we never do anything for you.”

“wait- what?” yushi looked up, panicked.

“don’t worry, we’ll even order for you this time so you don’t embarrass yourself again.” riku laughed, dodging the half-hearted punch yushi threw his way.

as they left the classroom, yushi lagged behind, trying to quiet the flurry of nerves in his chest. it wasn’t much—just a thought. but somehow, the idea of seeing you again didn’t seem so bad.

when you first started dating yushi, you both agreed to keep it a secret.

it was just easier that way. you wouldn't have to deal with nosy classmates, the wrath of yushi's junior fangirls, and perhaps the worst of it all, private conversations with your teachers about how academics should be your top priority.

how hard could it be to keep your relationship a secret? surprisingly for yushi, harder than any test he had done. he never thought of himself as someone who liked public display of affection, but he found himself struggling to suppress the urge to grab your hand when you waved at him as the two of you walked past each other in the hallway, or the urge to walk you to your club activities even if it meant being late for his. and it was just hell for yushi during lunch time, when he had to listen to anton ramble about a swimming competition he had no interest in, when he could be listening to you talk about your day or whatever that moved your pretty lips instead. anton could tell yushi wasn't listening from how his best friend glared past his shoulders at some guy from your friend group who managed to make you laugh.

"here, extra."

you looked up at your (secret) boyfriend, then back down at the packet of strawberry milk he had not-so-threateningly slammed onto your table. amusement quickly overtook your surprise as you watched yushi side-eye a guy friend of yours, before turning on his heel and strutting back to his table, where his food sat barely touched from how caught up he was in his jealousy.

well, there went the secrecy of your relationship, because your friends immediately jumped on the interaction, rising out of their seat to interrogate you about your relationship with yushi, who was well-known for his shyness. it took you much effort to convince your friends that you and yushi had become close friends from working together in the student council, which wasn't a complete lie. they were thankfully fooled, but you knew this secret would get out sooner or later.

"you can't say you want our relationship to be a secret whilst being so obvious."

you leaned your head against yushi's shoulder as the two of you perched on the edge of your schools rooftop, where you often met weekly to talk and people watch.

"can't help it. I want to be the one who makes you laugh like that."

you bit your lips and looked away, hiding the blush and the smile that crept onto your face. you stole a glance at yushi, noticing the pout that sat on his lips, plump and soft—tempting. in one swift motion, you leaned over to plant your lips on his, your eyes fluttering shut as you let your lips tell him that he's the one who makes you laugh the most.

he stared at you wide-eyed, ears turning coral as you pulled away with a cheeky smile.

he couldn't help himself, not when you were standing there with the infinite sky reflected in your pupils and the lingering taste of your strawberry lip balm on his lips. his arm wrapped around your waist to pull you flush against his body, the other hand coming up to cup your cheek, and without a word, your lips connected, deeper than the peck you gave him before.

"y-y/n!"

you jumped apart at the sound of your name called, immediately peering down the edge of the roof to spot your friend group gaping up at you from the school gate.

you and yushi glanced at each other, before bursting into giggles. well, there went your not-so well-kept secret.

be it snuggling against each other on the couch, with a single blanket just big enough to fit the both of you wrapped around your shoulders, or tucked warmly under his duvet, cuddling yushi is like hugging an oversized marshmallow.

on movie nights, you sometimes find yushi's head nested in your lap, with his fingers fiddling with your hand that is draped across his chest, while your other hand strokes his head in a rhythm that sometimes lulls him to sleep. other times, when he misses you to the point where putting a movie on would be too distracting, he makes sure he drowns himself in your scent by pulling you onto his lap, your body flush against his as he buries his nose into the crook of your neck, rubbing his soft cheek against your skin like a cat purring for affection, letting his warm breathe kiss the sensitive spot of your neck tenderly.

during your winter sleepovers, when the heater of your own homes is no match for the warmth you give each other, you and yushi take turns being the big spoon and little spoon. when it's yushi's turn to be the big spoon, he hugs you by the waist and pulls you close to rub his nose against your hair or pepper kisses on the back of your neck (he's such a cat), his hand slipping under your shirt to rub your tummy lovingly. and even with your back faced towards him, his nose against your skin and his slowing heartbeat thumping against your back reminds you that he's here.
