The Chinese luxury car brand Hongqi made a model of sedans (the Red Flag) in the late 50's through the 60's that were mainly meant to be vehicles for high ranking government officials or to transport visiting foreign dignitaries. I like to think Wen Ruohan has at least one or two and uses them to show off even when they should really be laying low — Nie Mingjue and Lan Xichen are basically waltzing into the Jiangs' party flying a giant 'I work for Wen Ruohan' flag, though only Lan Qiren notices it or cares enough to be irritated. The car in the photo below is a 1959 model.

2. I went trawling a site listing 60's Hong Kong male movie stars for some very loose inspo for the asshole guys in the bathroom that Nie Mingjue beats the shit out of. They are, from left to right, Chin Han, Lo Lieh, and Ling Yun. I feel like they're maybe a bit counterculture for guys who are supposed to be the social elite, but the sons of the very wealthy could probably get away with it in this handwavey version of 1960's China we're playing in.

25 episodes in Deep Lurk and each time Cheng Yi’s Yun HongShen holds HongQi’s hand, or has flirtatious banter and shenanigans along with the hugs & kisses be it on the cheek or a top the head, and the general “I love you so much I’d literally rather perish than see you sad or hurt” vibes I’m sitting standing here wondering how is this the second Republican spy drama I’ve watched this year with such vibes. Is this how we bamboozle the censorship (NRTA) to get BL-esq/Brosband vibes again, and GL vibes if you squint.

The mixture of former dmbj actors adds an extra layer of “oh my goodness they’re in this, too?!” which is always a nice bonus.

Deep Lurk is airing on television (cctv8) & on iqiyi like it had to go through two rounds of censorship before airing licence approval …after being on the shelf for 4/5 years since filming but good on them.
