An interview with Dublin food blogger Yummy Dublin!

“Just a girl and her fork eating (and drinking) her way through Dublin!”

Tell us a little about yourself and how you became so interested in documenting culinary delights?

I have always been a foodie. I grew up watching The Food Network from a young age; Martha Stewart was my role model and I don’t think I ever ordered from a kid’s menu. My mom always tells the story that when she asked the kids how they wanted their eggs cooked in the morning, every one said scrambled! Except me, who shouted “Benedict!”.

I am not only a great cook, but also love going out to eat and trying new dishes.

When traveling, I always want to go to the absolute best restaurants the city has to offer. How do I do that? Well, I go on Instagram and look at real customers’ food. I think that going to the restaurant’s page is never a true indication of the food, as those are professional photos of the best they have to offer. Sometimes, those are even stock photos.

When I moved to Dublin in January, I realised that the restaurant presence on Instagram was lacking and that there were no real ‘foodstagrams’, so I decided to create one myself. Within in 4 months, I had over 10,000 followers and I love to watch it grow every day!

Who would you consider to be your biggest influence?

Definitely the New York City foodstagrams, which can have upwards of 500,000 followers. @FOOOODIEEE in particular, who was my sorority sister in college. Her Instagram has over 400,000 followers, so she is a huge influence to me!

How do you source content for your blog? Do you stumble upon restaurants or purposely seek out highly rated establishments?

Although most of the content is my own, if I were to eat everything on the site I would be huge! I created the hashtag #YummyDublin so that people in the area can share their photos with me. YummyDublin is a look-book of the best restaurants in Dublin, so as long as they meet my specific criteria (presentation, taste, indulgent, etc.) I will share it. I love to repost other people’s photos as well!

How did you make yourself stand out in order to achieve an impressive following on Instagram?

I think that the reason why YummyDublin is so successful is because of the content. On Instagram especially you need to have photos that really stand out and look amazing as well as having honest content that isn’t just ads.

Plus, I add my own personality to the page. People find my captions to be funny and relevant, so I think people like following for that reason as well.

What is your proudest moment to date?

I only made YummyDublin five months ago. And after only a few months, Shemazing Magazine crowned Yummy Dublin as #1 foodstagram. That was a big deal for me;it made all the hard work pay off!

Do you find it easy to maintain your blog while living your daily life?

I actually really enjoy it. It’s also fun to see it grow organically and rewarding to see people messaging me thanking me for inspiring their great dinner in Dublin. Food is also my passion so I love doing the research and having an excuse to try new restaurants!

Do you enjoy one particular cuisine over others?

Italian food and desserts are my two weaknesses. I’m currently looking for Dublin’s #1 Italian restaurant to feature, so I’m having fun trying all of the Italian restaurants in the city in the process.

Is there a food that stands out as being the best you have tried?

For brunch I would say Bloom Brasserie on Baggott Street. We did their bottomless bubbly brunch and it was incredible! I had a filet steak with a poached egg and hollandaise with a glass of champagne… I don’t think you could ask for a better Saturday!

But I’m not always eating fancy food. My boyfriend and I really love our takeaway and I think they are really lacking in Dublin. Tiger’s Wood Fire Pizza in Rathmines is my new favourite place to order from. Their pizza and sandwiches are real, fresh and absolutely delish.

For people out there who are looking to start their own blog, what advice would you give them?

Be yourself and be honest. Feature something you are truly passionate about because keeping up with it is actually a tonne of work!

Have you any particular goals for the future?

My next goal is to hit 20k followers in the next three months and also to be nominated in the Shemazing awards this year for their Foodie award!
