oh my fucking god i can connect a Very Certain Hat Guy to kny lore with this tidbit. i was like . "if u combine "ina" from inadama and "tsuma" from agatsuma you get INAZUMA. inazuma? oh WHOS THE ARCHON OF INAZUMA? raiden ei, ALSO KNOWN AS NARUKAMI OGOSHO. and now WHAT did raiden ei do to ensure that she would not be eroded by time? CREATE A PUPPET. and WHO, is the prototype for said puppet? SCARAMOUCHE. SCARA-FUCKING-MOUCHE. NUMBER SIX OF SNEZHNAYA'S ELEVEN FATUI HARBINGERS AND THE LOVE OF MY LIFE. THE BALLADEER. SHOUKI NO KAMI, THE PRODIGAL. EVERLASTING LORD OF ARCANE WISDOM."

You know how long I've been waiting for peaches to come back into season? Besides that, this is unagi season. I can find unagi year-round, but since it's expensive, I've never bothered buying a big kabayaki slab of eel. I made my bentou and then sat down to eat the leftovers and found I wasn't enjoying the texture as much as other times I've had eel, and I wondered... is this even cooked? A friendly reminder that the "Kimetsu Kitchen" section of my blog is not instructional, but it is a place were I make stupid mistakes so you don't have to. I learned right away that eel must be cooked or it will kill you with toxins in its blood, so there was a moment of Zenitsu-style panic. What I also learned is that although kabayaki unagi is precooked, it is not meant to be eaten as-is like the unagi on sushi, you are absolutely supposed to heat it up, especially by grilling it. I have regrets on the bentou.
Something I wanted to make sure to incorporate in the bentou was rice, as rice has a lot of cultural ties to lightning. It's thought that lightning is the animating principle, or what gives life to rice plants (稲, whereas rice itself is 米), thereby making lighting a hallowed element of rice cultivation, and by extension a holy phenomenon in a culture that circles around rice cultivation. This is why the Second Form of Thunder Breath is called "Rice Spirit." As an attack name, it's Inadama, written as 稲魂, but as Kaigaku's surname in Kimetsu Academy, it's 稲玉. While this Breath is named for thunder, "kaminari" (雷), there's a lot of ways to refer to lightning/thunder, like other ways of reading the basic character 雷 like "ikazuchi" or writing "ikazuchi" in the more rare "霆" or referring to violent, blasting thunder in rarer terms like "Hekireki" 霹靂 (yes, as in "Thunderclap and Flash"). There's a whole long list of most basic compound kanji words to fit a bunch of difference nuances of thunder and lightning, included kanji that are typically only used in those words and you're just doubling up on the "thunder" meaning to really get the thundering point across. This is getting really, really archaic, but you know how the Thunder Pillar is called "Nari-bashira" (Roaring Pillar, 鳴柱)? Thunder also used to be called "Narukami" (鳴神). "Nari" and "naru" are the same "roaring" verb, and you might have noticed this is like word "kaminari" but in a different order. You could think of both words with the same meaning: "roar of the gods" or "roaring god." And, if the holiness of lightning hasn't been blasted into your head hard enough yet, the word for god (神) itself also used to be the word used for thunder, just that, on its own. It's not just a major force of nature and a pretty show and big sound, it is a divine force to be reckoned with.
Let's bring this back to rice. One of the more common words, which is more in reference to the blast of electricity itself instead of only the sound it makes, is "inazuma" 稲妻, one of at least a couple words for lightning/thunder which includes the character for rice plants. It's very amusing that it's "rice plant" and "wife" but even more amusing if you're a fan of the Thunder Bros:
Inadama: 稲玉 Agatsuma: 我妻 Like how Jigorou (by the way, "goro" is the sound thunder makes) wanted the two of them to serve as a Pillar together to complete each other in the areas they lack, their names are also like one whole split into two pieces. And while I'm at this, let's get into their first names, even though that's taking us further from the rice topic: Kaigaku: 獪岳 "crafty" & "peak/mountain" Zenitsu: 善逸 "virtue" & "flee"
Okay, like, rude. Did the same cynical monk with a bad sense of humor pick up both orphans and name them? "You're a sly and crafty one, I can tell. The very peak of craftiness. And you? When you see the virtuous thing to do, you're going to turn around and flee from doing that." I've played with Zenitsu's name a bit more in this One-Shot fic, but something that I find interesting about Kaigaku's name is that, like Himejima's, it contains a geological reference which isn't very commonly used. We certainly see Kaigaku live up to his name in his brief appearances, he's got his sights on lofty goals and will do whatever sly things he needs to do to get there. In their final exchange with one another, he and Zenitsu make a lot of references to "善悪" (zen'aku), what's "right and wrong." More deeply, what's virtuous and good, and what is evil. It's in being directly contrasted to his lightning counterpart Kaigaku that Zenitsu stops fleeing and lives up to the good in his name. And, when it came down to it, Kaigaku was the one who twice chose cowardly actions to save himself. Anyway, rice. The rice in this bentou happens to be from the Izumo region, home to a bunch of Shinto culture (including many legends surrounding a rice harvest goddess, Inata-hime) and a strong magatama culture, though Kaigaku's is the more standard shape with a pointed end instead of the knobby Izumo shape. I only note these details because I'm an Izumo region nerd, not because I think Kaigaku is from there. That said, magatama are said to help bring forth and focus one's spiritual power, so like, there you go, that's a meaning behind his motif. I got the blue color on the rice by using butterfly pea flower tea, cool, huh? As for the greens, that's a vegetable called "kaiware." I just picked it out because it says "kai" and "ware" sounds like the verb for splitting something apart. Sometimes my thoughts are simple puns.

Fluffy Marikyo headcanons
Just some headcanons for the OC x OC ship of my OC Mari Lang and @yukii0nna's OC Kikyo Sharma for our (technically it's mine, but Yukii's basically my co-writer by now and has given me so many ideas so it's also ours) Yu-Gi-Oh Zexal x Winx Club AU 'fic' (Officially known as Zexal Club)
*Mari watches Kikyo invent things, along with listen to her ramble about her inventions and ideas, genuinely interested
*Kikyo often listens to Mari play or sing
*Sometimes Mari uses her music to help calm Kikyo down and comfort her, usually by singing softly to her
*Mari helped Kikyo a lot with getting her out of her shell, and got her a little more into fashion
*They both cuddle each other a lot
*Whenever Kikyo's in a duel and Mari's present, she cheers her on like crazy
*Both enjoy having movie night dates together
*Mari often gets Kikyo flowers and gifts, making sure they're ones she likes

the sheer coincidence
in one of my aus, zenitsu is raijin's human vessel
My research: Many objects in Shinto shrines are considered sacred because lightning struck them. Lightning, of course, being the mode through which the gods are called forth and enter that person or object.
Me: Ze--
My research: Don’t say it.
Me: Zenitsu.
My research: Why do I bother?
