Random Yugioh Card Lore Rambling – The Elemental Charmers

For being one of the more lastingly popular archetypes of the game, the Charmer girls are surprisingly bereft of in-depth lore. Really, all they seem to have is a vague connection to the Duel Terminal setting via Wynn, and an ambiguous connection to the inexplicably-popular ‘Gagagigo and the Terrible, No-Good, Very-Bad Life Decisions’ storyline.

So here are MY thoughts/theories on them!

To begin with, I think that while the Charmers are tied to Duel Terminal, they are not actually PART of the Duel Terminal setting, at least in the present.

We know from the official lore that Wynn the Wind Charmer was born into the Gusto Tribe, specifically that she is the younger sisters of Winda, Priestess of Gusto. But that Wynn left her tribe at a young age to ‘follow her own path’ (and likely dodged a HUGE bullet given the… well, EVERYTHING that would end up happening to her tribe).

Now with the clear similarities between Wynn and the other Gusto in both appearance and naming, as many others have theorized I think it’s no stretch to imagine that Eria the Water Charmer has a similar connection to the Gishki Tribe. Specifically being the long lost sister of Gishki Ariel. Again, given their similar appearance and names.

Now if Wynn and Eria are both from Duel Terminal, does this mean that Hiita and Aussa are as well? Maybe. Hiita might have connections to the Lavals, and Aussa could be some lost survivor of the X-Blades.

However, I don’t think the question of whether Hiita and Aussa, or even Eria really, are connected to Duel Terminal even really MATTERS.

Because in the present of their story, I don’t think the Charmers are even ON the world of Duel Terminal. With Wynn and potentially Eria having been taken away from her homeworld at a young age.

How and by whom? Why, by the mentor of all four of the Elemental Charmers.

The Dark Magician.

Yeah, this is where the theories start getting a bit wild, but I do have at least two strong(?) pieces of evidence here.

First, the fact that all of the Charmers are spellcasters, which actually becomes rather notable when considering Wynn’s family. Because the Gusto tribe are all psychic-type monsters. Which seems to be representative of the strong mental and spiritual connection the Gusto all have with their winged-beast companions through their powerful shared affinity for WIND.

So Wynn being a spellcaster instead implies that she has learned how to channel her powerful wind affinity not through the mental/spiritual connections of her family, but through magic. Almost certainly after having been taught by a powerful magic-user.

So why Dark Magician in particular?

Simple. Because all of the Charmers just so happen to make use of the Dark Magical Circle. One of the ICONIC symbols associated with the Dark Magician.

See, I have another theory about just why we see this Magical Circle in so many card artworks across the game. Because the Dark Magician has actually been traveling all over the Duel Monsters universe, between lands and even whole worlds, both learning and teaching magic to many students, followers and disciples. I mean for one, I think we can actually assume that the Dark Magician was heavily involved in the creation of Endymion’s Magical Citadel.

And I think the Elemental Charmers were one such group of students taught by the Dark Magician.

At one time, the master of dark magic was passing through the world of Duel Terminal when he happened upon a young Wynn, fresh into her journey, perhaps a young Eria as well, and took the promising young elementalist(s) under his wing. Not long after (or before) and world-hop or two, he would take on Hiita and Aussa as well, and the Dark Magician would begin teaching these four girls the art of magic to channel their powerful elemental affinities.

Some time later, after the four girls had begun growing into their potential, each gaining a strong bond with a familiar tied to their element, the Dark Magician would bid his students farewell, as he felt they had little left to learn from him. And that these four charmers would learn much more from their own journey, and each other, than anything more he could teach them.

And so, with the world of Terminus and its many, many problems long behind them, Wynn, Hiita, Eria and Aussa, along with their loyal familiars would set off on their own adventure together.

Now as for the final two members of the Charmer team, Lyna and Dharc, there are a couple possibilities. For one, it seems like those two are notably younger than the main elemental quartet of girls, given that they are later additions to the archetype and notably don’t have the ‘Channeler’ forms that seem to represent the older, more experienced versions of the Charmers. Also notable is that in the Chronicles animation shorts, we see Wynn, Hiita, Eria and Auusa in a mix of their Familiar-Possessed and Channeler forms with both their original and second familiars, while Lyna and Dharc seem to specifically be in their younger Charmer forms with just their original familiars.

So maybe rather than being mentored by the Dark Magician, Lyna and Dharc were actually taken in later and mentored by the original four girls after their training under the Dark Magician?

Now as for the theory that sooner or later, Eria’s Gigobyte familiar is going to grow up, do something terrible to his mistress and become the ‘young evildoer’, Gagagigo of one of Yugioh’s frankly more overrated card-lore’s…

Frankly I think it is ENTIRELY up in the air whether or not Eria’s Gigobyte is the one who grows up into Gagagigo.

Yes, it did seem very plausible back when we had the rather ominous and foreboding ‘Familiar-Possessed’ artworks that could be read as the Charmers being literally possessed by their familiars, which in turn would provide a natural ‘Start of Darkness’ for Gagagigo.

BUT, with the more recent wave of support for the Charmers and the redesigns of their Familiar-Possessed forms, that read is feeling a lot less plausible. For one, the new Familiar-Possessed designs don’t have the unsettling and foreboding vibes they previously had, and paint the act of ‘familiar possession’ as a far more benign, supportive and symbiotic cooperation between the Charmers and their Familiars.

On top of that, we also have the older/empowered forms of Eria’s familiar referred to as ‘Jigabyte’ and ‘Gagigobyte’, feeling fairly distinct from ‘Gagagigo’. Who also appears in both the Familiar-Possessed redesign and all the other newer Charmer support card-art. Implying there could very likely be some retconning at play.

Given how often Gigobyte shows up in other card art as a generic low-level monster, I think it’s pretty clear there are almost certainly more than one of these little guys running around. So while the Gigobyte who shows up on the card ‘Gigobyte’ is still the one who grows up into Gagagigo, until we get more concrete evidence via more Charmer support, I think it’s entirely plausible if not LIKELY that Eria’s familiar is simply a simply a different Gigobyte.

Finally, personally I really don’t like this whole idea that Eria’s Gigobyte is somehow ‘destined’ to become Gagagigo. It feels like the Charmers’ story is just being hijacked by a totally different story, with Eria now being relegated to being just a side-character, or worse a fridged mentor, of Gagagigo’s story.

While that might have worked back when all we had of this group was the Charmers and their Familiar-Possessed forms, with the more recent support indicating there is probably going to be MORE to the Charmers’ story. So it doesn’t feel appropriate to just chain them to Gagagigo’s story at this point.

Not to mention, as it should be rather clear, I think the Gagagigo story is SUPER overrated. Just because it was one of the first Yugioh card-lore stories doesn’t necessarily make it, you know, good. It’s just this lizard boy getting jerked around by plot, fighting random dudes and being repeatedly redeemed and re-evil’d. I know traumatized sad-bois are a fetish for you people, but you realize you need an actual story and character to make your kinks actually INTERESTING, right?

Round 1f, Match 11: Gusto vs. Starry Knight vs. Tearlaments!

Hey all! It's been a hot minute, but here's how I'm playing Gusto in 2023! Presenting Assault Gusto with a splash of Miko (I'm just gonna shameless copy paste my write-up from the Gusto discord) This is very similar to my last build - we're focused on the Sphreez OTK, aiming to go second and disable/break the opponent's board before swinging into their high attack monsters.

However the twist with this variation is a small Mikanko package consisting of 3 water arabesque, 2 Hu-li, and a Mikanko rivalry for Hu-li to search.

Continuing to run the assault engine not only provides easy access to Tailwind off of an e-tele/141, but can also give you Mikanko Water Arabesque depending on the current boardstate and your hand.

Water Arabesque is an insane removal tool that skirts around monster effect negation (though it can still get ash'd watch out) while also helping the gusto gameplan. Since Hu-Li with an equip is basically a 0-attack sphreez on her own, she helps push for damage; also she can be surprisingly sticky being unable to be destroyed by battle or card effects while equipped with arabesque.

Mikanko Rivalry can fetch Double-Edged Sword from deck, but also Axe of Fools to act like imperm in a pinch.

Running more Mikanko cards will just make the deck a much worse Mikanko deck, so this small engine fits in nicely, provides removal and actively contributes to the Gusto win con.

Extra deck is just synchro good stuff, only 100% must includes are Sphreez and Power Tool

Instant fusion is a very funny option, we can equip Arabesque to the monster and stop it from being popped during the end-phase. Not needed though you can cut if you're not feeling it

Yuno would play Gusto because of his Magic being Wind and it does revolve around Mages.

William would play Sunvine and Sunavalon because of his World Tree Magic

Mimosa plays Aromages because they are Plants and they heal the user

Klaus would play anything that revolves around metal so Infinitrack.

Alecdora would play Raidraptor mainly because he shares the same English VA as Shay Obsidian

Shiren would play Gem Knights because they are rocks.

David would play Dice cards like Duke with his Ace Being Orgoth The Relentless.

Letoile would play Mirror Force cards because of her deck becausw of her Magic.

Langris is a tough one, but I feel Like he would play any Chaos Space deck or Galaxy-Eyes

TWO FOR MY GIRL TORI!!! LET'S GOOOO

First impression: sorry all my first impressions of spinoff characters is from DL but anyway. I saw her in Zexal world and was like. oh ok so that's the Yugioh Girl™ for Zexal I guess. that's cool

Impression now: TORI KOTORI MY GIRL. MY SWEET GIRL. REALEST ONES ALIVE. IF SHE WASNT HERE YUMA WOULD BE DEAD IN A DITCH SOMEWHERE i love her sooo much and people are so fucking mean to her and it makes me want to level a city block. SHES 13 BE NICE TO HER!!!!!!!!!

Favorite moment: She really does just straight up command the rest of Yuma's friends with the confidence and gusto of a seasoned space pilot and navigates a spacecraft out of a black hole and the fact yugioh fans don't ever talk about how absolutely kickass that is is misogyny at its finest i will not be elaborating.

Idea for a story: A story about her deckbuilding and actually Getting Into Dueling and working with like. Rio and Yuma and Kite to really start getting good at the game would be soo so sweet ;__;

Unpopular opinion: SHES A GOOD CHARACTER. FRANKLY SHE'S ONE OF THE BEST YUGIOH GIRLS. it sucks that she doesnt really ever get to actually duel but shes still a MAJOR ACTIVE CHARACTER IN THE STORY. "uwwuughh all she does is say Yuma's name" BECAUSE SHE IS HIS FRIEND. AND SHE CARES ABOUT HIM. HOPE THIS HELPS.

Favorite relationship: I do adore her friendship with Yuma...she is really By His Side through thick and thin and it's so sweet and you can tell they love and care about each other so much. I ALSO RLY LIKE THE LOWKEY LITTLE FRIENDSHIP SHE WAS WITH ORBITAL??? it's adorable, she cares about the funny little robot and she's so right. iirc isnt there the lore that her sub VA and orbital's sub VA got married?? that's so cute.

Favorite headcanon: would do long-running forum RPs where she RPs as a cat or pokemon or Animal Going On an Adventure. watches cooking "life hack" videos just to make herself mad. I feel like she's gonna get into, like, rockclimbing when she's a little bit older. Outdoorsy sports. Gotta keep up Yuma's boundless energy somehow!!!

No, yo si puedo rolear en ambos mundos porque lo que me interesa es escribir en paz. // Yo no te veo escribiendo en paz, te veo alterando el contexto de un ask buena onda de alguien para meterle drama, ¿por que son así? Quejas, quejas, quejas y más quejas. En ningún momento habló esa persona de la toxicidad en un lado u otro, comparar si hay más retardaditos en el día o la noche o en tu casa o la mia es tonto, lo que habló fue de su experiencia y gusto a la hora de rolear y una propuesta para dos proyectos inspirados en juegos de cartitas. A la gente le gusta mucho más centrarse en el drama y criticar que en ese tipo de ask, por eso el rol está podrido sea en fc real o ficticio.

Y para el otro ask personalmente me gusta mas el anime pero no descartaría rolear ficticio en algun momento pero no encuentro el valor aún. ¿Vanguard tal vez? Si soy honesto no sabria como podria ser pero creo que con un buen sistema se puede adaptar, como todo: si Yugioh se pudo adaptar y la idea parecía descabellada antes de Yugitest, ¿porque no algo de Vanguard para variar? Que sea de nicho viene mejor, te ahorras los criticones de turno y llega gente que si tenga ganas de disfrutar en lugar de llorar porque supuestamente le fue mal en fc anime y solo se topó con el Kazama de turno

Yugioh Stars cast tidbits #7

Time of writing its my birthday, felt like a sort of birthday mood so lets do some birthday stuff for the main trio.

Yuji: October 12th, Astronomy Day. He likes to be with his family and friends, he's pretty open to parties and events, one time he saw one of his favorite shows live on stage.

Jun: March 1st, Several people examined and implicated after being accused of being witches, 'kick-starting' the Salem Witch Trials in full. The Ryuga Household do celebrate their children's birthdays, but most of the time it consists of dinners and handing over money/fancy gifts. Jun prefers to be either by herself during these days, or at the local game cafe whenever the Hibiki siblings are there, especially "Hibiki-Sensei."

Kenta: May 5th, Children's Day. Orphanage celebrates birthdays with full gusto, he's a bit annoyed, but at the same time he can't help but enjoy. It's slightly tempered by the fact that his closest friends aren't here to celebrate it with him.

Here we go, this card i designed for Leons Gusto deck. Its suppose to help him summon a synchro monster faster and also be used with a trap card that i will design later. not much to say really. With this and the trap card Leon can summon Skiel better to the field while keeping advantage and set up his field to go into his special Synchro Boss Monster that i will also design later. That Synchro Monster uses Skiel as the tuner and 1 or more non tuner synchro monsters as the other material. the boss monster is level 8 so basically Skiel + Daigusto Eguls. all three have a synchro monster like that and i just make cards that help support that play style without forcing any of them to run actual meklord support, that is reserved for the 3 Illiaster Nobles. Livia, Leon and Adiran all have the emperor of their mark in their decks but thats also the only meklord card they have.

I kinda wanna go for that Accel Synchro thing from the anime except that this would be called "Absorb Synchro Summon" which has the emperor absorb the synchro monster to turn itself into a new monster. Those will act as the big boss monsters for them.

I was looking up a few cards to help write the card text. i tried as best as i could taking help from other cards and how they word these type of effects.
