rambles on armed reaction & feminism
So I just finished Armed Reaction IV (I’ve been on a slow binge-watch of the series since last August cause I love Joyce Tang) and I have some thoughts I guess. Disclaimer: This is in no way a cohesive essay or anything just pure rambles cause it’s 1am.
TWs for rape mention
Chan Sam Yuen (Joyce Tang) has always been the heart of the series even if the first female lead is always another actress in each series. In the first series she’s a complete tomboy, and the series is trying to have a feminist message and empower women. She was the first female cop in HK to fire a gun and gun-toting female cops/female cops in general were scarce so it was a big deal. To be honest I’ve never been really into the whole Sam Yuen/Ching Fung relationship from the start (even Joyce/Marco🤮 stuff irl aside).
Tumblr media
Anyways, Ching Fung (Marco Ngai) literally admits to being a misogynist and discriminates women based on their gender which is just... a red flag. The show wanted a nice enemies to lovers arc and sure their relationship is portrayed as cute sometimes but they sure go through a lot of shit. Even before the main messed up cheating arc with Wing (Angie Cheong) he gets drunk and hooks up with some girl in the first series too.
Tumblr media
I feel like the first series has a lot of these little feminist moments, where Sam Yuen is adamant that women can do anything men can do. Her character is contrasted with Yu Sau Ngo (Esther Kwan) who, at the start of the series, is a housewife who works a deskjob cause it’s more acceptable for women. She prioritizes her kid and her husband, but in the end her husband leaves her. I didn’t really like Bobby Au-Yeung’s character Siu Sang either. I’m glad Chi (Ada Choi)’s character actually broke up with him cause I don’t think I’d forgive a man if he switched out my birth control to try getting me pregnant like... red flag.
Tumblr media
Anyways, then as the series progresses and she becomes a mother, and starts to prioritize her family over work which I guess is normal and happens to women irl. It just felt like her character started changing too much and didn’t feel like the original feminist her from the first series. I suppose people change, and they wanted to show character development, like the tomboy in her early 20s can become a good wife/mother etc. I was kinda iffy on that, I don’t think she should’ve changed too much. Or maybe it’s meant to show that women can lean into “traditional” female roles and still be strong feminists or whatever idk. Then I noticed in 2021 series, they bring back the feminist quotes from Sam Yuen. She challenges Moses Chan’s character a lot, saying things about strong women, and telling him not to assume certain misogynistic stereotypes about women. I think it’s a little on the nose and trying to get the audience to remember the first series like ‘Hey remember her?? The strong female character?’
Tumblr media
Now let’s get into her experiences. Chan Sam Yuen is notorious for being one of if not TVB’s most tragic characters. Father already dead, violently raped, ptsd and other trauma, son killed, daughter kidnapped, nearly died giving birth to her second son, husband killed, etc... like... can she please have a break??? What was the reason for all this... Did the show keep throwing curveballs at her to prove how strong she is despite all that? Why does she have to suffer so much? Is it like those horror movies where she’s being punished for being a feminist? But ironically, it’s the things associated with traditional femininity like motherhood/being a wife where she gets hurt the most, like she loses her children and husband. Is this supposed to mean anything or am I reading too much into it??
Tumblr media
The ending of series 4 was kind of an open ending (well until the 2021 series came), and was supposed to be hopeful. (And another TVB BBQ finale) Sam Yuen spends the rest of her life being optimistic that maybe one day, her husband will return. Maybe he’s alive out there. This is very similar to Joyce’s other notable character Hung Sheung Sin from Come Home Love: Lo and Behold who also spends 20 years yearning for a husband to come back. I feel like with all the grief Sam Yuen endures, it could’ve been explored a lot more. I mean, there were 40 episodes in Series 4! Dragged on way too long on things that I didn’t particularly care about if you ask me, and a lot of the Bobby/Ada stuff was like an exact rehash of the Bobby/Esther stuff in earlier series (he gets the girl, he doesn’t get the girl, etc.)  Then in Armed Reaction 2021 she finally gets some closure and learns to move on and finally accept that her husband is gone. Very emotional, well acted, and the best part of the reboot.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I feel that at the core of the series, the strongest points have always been the female friendships between Sam Yuen and the other female lead, whether it is Esther Kwan or Ada Choi’s characters. TBH They should’ve just been gay together They have always been supportive of each other throughout, which I appreciate.
BONUS:
Tumblr media
Not even getting into the queer-coding discussion rn but bonus points for Sam Yuen saying she doesn’t discriminate gay people klsdjflsd.
Tumblr media
And bonus points for Cherry (Mandy Lam) showing up in Armed Reaction IV. I didn’t expect her to be in so many episodes and have a whole plot based around her being forced to drug-deal. I thought she would only be in 1 episode so I’m pleasantly surprised <3 Love her and wish she could’ve interacted with Sam Yuen.

An app for everything.
CHEIL HONG KONG LAUNCHES ‘FATAL RECOGNITION’ SAFETY SCAN APP
TO DETECT EARLY WARNING SIGNS OF A STROKE
A ground-breaking mobile app offering early warning detection of potentially fatal strokes has been developed by Cheil Hong Kong.
According to WHO figures[i], someone has a stroke every two seconds. It claims the lives of more than 6 million people die each year. Meanwhile, two thirds of those who survive are left with brain damage or permanent disability.
The key to safety is spotting the early warning signs—with the most common warning sign of a stroke being face-drooping. But since some strokes are less severe than others, it’s incredibly hard for the human eye to detect.
So working with The Hong Kong Stroke Association, Cheil saw a way to make a difference using facial recognition—technology that’s already built into our phones.
‘Fatal Recognition’ is a safety scan app that uses facial recognition technology to detect early warning signs of a potentially fatal stroke.
The average person unlocks their phone 120 times a day[ii]. Now, every time a user scans to unlock, a computer algorithm will detect for minute signs of face-drooping—signs that are unrecognisable to the human eye. If an early warning sign is detected, the user will receive an alert to call emergency services while simultaneously alerting that user’s pre-set emergency contact.
‘Fatal Recognition’ was launched in April 2019 on Google Play.

Jackie Chan and Ken Tong in Police Story (Jackie Chan, Chi-Hwa Chen, 1985) Cast: Jackie Chan, Maggie Cheung, Brigitte Lin, Kwok-Hung Lam, Bill Tung, Yuen Chor, Charlie Cho, Chi-Wing Lau, Hark-On Fung, Hing-Yin Kam, Mars, Tai-Bo, Ken Tong. Screenplay: Jackie Chan, Edward Tang. Cinematography: Yiu-Tsou Cheung. Production design: Oliver Wong. Film editing: Peter Cheung. Music: Kevin Bassinson. Jackie Chan's debt to Buster Keaton has never been more fully displayed, or indeed more fully repaid, than in Police Story, which has a Keatonian moment when he latches onto a passing bus with the crook of an umbrella. Chan plays a cop who goes from hero to goat and back again in this story of an almost one-man crusade against a drug lord. The climax involves the near-total destruction of a shopping mall, with one spectacular set-up after another.

Jet ‘s Chang Mo-Kei’s kung fu has been struck by the Jinx Palm, blocking his chi, destroying his ability to perform kung fu and causing him to need constant infusions of chi from Taoist priest Chang San-Fung (Sammo Hung). But Chang can only be cured by a massive infusion of yang energy, which he receives after falling off a cliff and meets a hermit chained to a bolder who teaches him the Great Solar Stance to get back at the hermit’s own enemies. Afterwards, Chang is super-skilled and learns kung fu with the ease of Jet Li. Then things get crazy with everybody flying and chi all over the place, a Mongol princess, the King of Green Bat, all the martial arts schools fighting each other, hundreds of people running around with flags, the not-evil Evil Cult, Hermit Chained to a Boulder Fist. And then, as it gets to the big end fight, it just stops, teasing a sequel that was never made. And I was filled with wonder.
Wong Jing’s Kung Fu Cult Master (1993) is the first time I know that I watched something adapted from a Louis Cha story. It is based on the third novel in Cha’s Condor Trilogy, Heaven Sword and Dragon Sabre. I probably saw it at the old Golden Classics Cinema in Toronto. It was when I was watching all the Jet Li movies. This one was memorable and, having no familiarity with the source material, I found it difficult to follow. That didn’t stop me from pretending later I had been struck by a Jinx Palm. (What do you expect me to do when you give me charcoal powder toothpaste, people?). I was filled with wonder.
Since then I have made sense of what I saw through translated comics adaptations, in particular Ma Wing-Shing’s Heaven Sword and Dragon Sabre (Comic One, 2002), the novel Kung Fu Cult Master adapts. It seems fitting that I would first read Louis Cha via the comics of Ma Shing-Wing and Tony Wong’s The Legendary Couple (ComicOne, 2002), an adaptation of Cha’s Return of the Condor Heroes. It parallels how I first encountered him in a way that I remember in Kung Fu Cult Master, rather than Chor Yuen’s elegant Heaven Sword and Dragon Sabre (1978) or Wong Kar-Wai’s deconstruction and sorta prequel, Ashes of Time (Redux or not) (1993; 2008).
Behold this wonder! Gold Lion and Green Bat in Kung Fu Cult Master
Slightly more elegant Green Bat in Chor Yuen’s 1978 Heaven Sword and Dragon Sabre
The comics and the 1983 television adaptations allowed me to become familiar with Cha and these stories. They allowed me start to understand stories that assumed familiarity with the story, whether Kung Fu Cult Master, Ashes of Time, or  Jeffrey Lau’s Lunar New Year parody of The Legend of Condor Heroes, The Eagle Shooting Heroes (1993), shot with the same cast and at the same time as Ashes of Time. Please note Tony Leung Chiu-Wai in each film.
As the Blind Swordsmani in Ashes of Time
Suffering from a painful allergic reaction as Duan Zhixing in Eagle Shooting Heroes
In the early 1990s, Louis Cha was what Ip Man movies are now.
I watched some of the 2000s and 2010s tv adaptations in non-subtitled form, but by then I could understand who and what I was seeing. In fact, I was pleased when I could actually get the joke that the landlord and landlady in Stephen Chow’s Kung Fu Hustle (2006) were the ill-fated lovers of Return of the Condor Heroes, Yang Guo and Xiaolongnü played by Andy Lau and Idy Chan in the 1983 tv adaptation I borrowed from a good friend and have since gotten for myself.
Andy Lau as Yang Guo and Idy Chan as Xiaolongnu in 1983
Carman Lee as Xiaolongnu, Lois Koo as Yang Guo and giant condor friend in 1995.
Yuen Qiu as Xiaolongnu and Yuen Wah as Yang Guo in Kung Fu Hustle. Ha, I get the joke now! I can laugh!
And it helped a lot watching those shows when I read Tony Wong’s Legendary Couple, because the translations of the names were so different, but I recognized a disreputable Taoist when I saw him.* Sometimes the Wudang Clan is something to mess with.
Cha’s most adapted–and possibly referenced–books are the Condor Trilogy:  Legend of Condor Heroes; Return of the Condor Heroes; and, Heaven Sword and Dragon Sabre. They are sequels, but follow family and kung fu school lines more than the adventures of any one protagonist through three novels. And luckily for us, McLehose Press is planning on translated the whole trilogy into English. The first volume, Legends of the Condor Heroes: A Hero Born, translanted by Anna Holmwood, is now available. No English speakers will ever need to struggle like I did again. The kung fu fantasy works of Louis Cha will be available to us all–or at least some of them.
Dr. Louis Cha Leung-yung was born in 1924 in Haining, Jiaxing, China and lives in Hong Kong. That’s right, Cha is still going at 94. He has worked as an editor editor and journalist, but it was his wuxia novels, written between 1955 and 1972 under the pseudonym “Jin Yong,” (Kam Yung in Cantonese) that brought him a tremendous success. According to Holmwood, “sales of his books worldwide stand at 300 million, and if bootleg copies are taken into consideration, that figure rises to a staggering one billion.”
Cha got his start as a copy editor in 1947 at Shanghai’s Ta Kung Po newspaper. He became deputy editor of Hong Kong’s Hsin Wan Po. He left journalism briefly to work as as screenwriter for Great Wall Movie Enterprises, Ltd. In 1959, Cha co-founded Hong Kong’s Ming Pao newspaper. And it was primarily Ming Pao that serialized his fifteen wuxia stories. His first was The Romance Of The Book And The Sword (1955). His last was Sword of the Yue Maiden. He retired from writing fiction in 1972 and he’s been updating and revising the work ever since. There was a time in the 1970s when his books were simultaneously banned in both the Mainland–because it was seen as satirizing and criticizing the Chinese government–and in Taiwan–because it was seen as somehow pro-Communist, anti-Kuomintang and critical of Taiwan’s one-party rule.In 1995, he retired from his position as editor-in-chief of Ming Pao. Cha has been active in Hong Kong politics, helping draft the Hong Kong Basic Law and then working on the Preparatory Committee in advance of the handover of Hong Kong from the United Kingdom to China in 1997. And he’s spent much of the new millennium pursuing higher education. He studied at St. John’s College in Cambridge, receiving a doctorate in Chinese history in 2010. And the South China Morning Post reports that Cha (might have) received another doctorate, this one in Chinese literature from Peking University in 2013. Of course, this doesn’t even begin to cover his probable knowledge of martial arts like the Nine Yin Manual and 18 Dragon Palm. One assumes Dr. Cha is cultured in all things.
Dr. Louis Cha via the South China Morning Post
Whenever I think of Louis Cha, I think of Tony Leung Chiu-wai in Wong Kar-Wai’s In The Mood For Love (2000). Sure, there is lovely music and melancholy love with the sartorially unstoppable Maggie Cheung, but it is easy to overlook that not only is Tony Leung a writer, he is a writer of wuxia novels. I’m not saying that Wong made a movie about Louis Cha’s love life, which I hope is less depressing, but I think Cha and writers like Gu Long  and Wang Dulu were in the background. Especially after Ashes Of Time. And Ashes of Time is a lot easier to follow if you realize it is a deconstruction of the Condor Trilogy. It relies on the same kind of familiarity that Peter Greenaway relies on people having with The Tempest in watching Prospero’s Books (1991). I love that the touchstones for both extremely artsy-fartsy directors are different. I love that Wong works with a serialized wuxia writer. It would be like Greenaway deconstructing Tolkien or Robert E. Howard**—but all wrapped up together. The high and low brow have a common enemy. God save us from the middle brow.
And Cha is being compared to Tolkien and George R. R. Martin in many of the reviews of A Hero Born. In fact, right on the cover a blurb from the Irish Times reads, “A Chinese Lord of the Rings.” And I get it. It’s short hand. People need some kind of reference before they’ll pick up the book. That’s fine. There will be plenty of time for pedantry later. Once people have read the book and become Cha fans, they can start arguing on the internet, “Hey, Louis Cha is a much more prolific author than Tolkien ever was with a more profound influence on Chinese language literature and readers.”
I would probably make those comparisons myself if my first encounter with Cha’s characters and stories hadn’t been Kung Fu Cult Master. Then again, Kung Fu Cult Master is the first half of a projected two-art adaptation but, like Ralph Bakshi’s animated Lord of the Rings, there was never a part two. So. Yeah. It’s just that I don’t know what other comparison to make.
In an interview with South China Morning Post, Anna Holmwood describes Legends of the Condor Heroes: A Hero Born as “China’s Walter Scott mixed with The Lord of the Rings fantasy things. That’s exactly what it is.” For their part, the SCMP copy editor chose a title comparing the trilogy with George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice And Fire. A Hero Born is wuxia at its best. It’s 1205 CE and the Jin are encroaching on the Song Empire. The emperor is unworthy and the people are oppressed. Itinerant heroes try to make things right. Two of them, Skyfury Guo and Ironheart Yang encounter a grumpy Taoist priest Chu Qiuji*** who, while heroic, is a jerk. He avidly demonstrates why the Wu Tang Clan is nothing to mess with. Guo and Yang become involved in a fight with soldiers and must flee. Their children, Guo Jing and Yang Kang grow up on different sides of the conflict. Plus, there’s Genghis Khan! And a secret beggar sect! And one of my favorite characters keeps his wife’s body in a frozen cave! I wish I could do better, but I’ll just suggest you read the book, read the comics, watch the tv shows and movies.
Oh, yeah, and there’s plenty of fantastic kung fu move and school names and action. Comics, while also working in a static medium, don’t face the same kinds of challenges a novel does in depicting action. Comics creator Ma Wing-Shing in particular captures the force of the martial arts masters moves. I am particularly fond of his chi lines. But Holmwood has some interesting thoughts on translating the names of the various stances, fists and swords as well as conveying the choreography of a fight sans images.
“The name [of these moves] is very evocative and it’s part of the creating of the world, but what really matters to readers is can they follow who is doing what, what the actions are, who is hitting whom, and how they are hitting them,” she said. “When you are translating, you have to read on such a careful and deep level. You are constantly asking yourself: is the hand going there? Is it going up or down? How is this move working? That’s the most challenging part – is to be able to express what the actions are in a way that is going to be vivid on the page and people can clearly understand and follow what’s happening.”
“You can shorten sentences to make the action move, and use some short punchy verbs that make the actions very fast,” she said. “When you want to draw attention to the moment for dramatic effect, you add more details, slow it down, and make the sentence a big longer.”
And I have to say it works. Right from the start of A Hero Born, I easily imagine Chu Qiuji’s unnecessarily brutal fights with the heroes he mistakes for scoundrels. Does it help that I’ve read Ma Wing-Shing, Tony Wong and seen film and television adaptations of Cha’s stories? Maybe. But Holmwood does a good job of taking readers into the martial world. I can’t wait for the next translated volume of Legend of Condor Heroes finally presented if not in its original serial format, something close. McLehose is planning three more volumes of Legend of Condor Heroes before starting on Return of the Condor Heroes–making this a burly “trilogy.”
Ma Wing-Shing demonstrates how to draw punching.
I wrote more about Ma Wing-Shing and his adaptation of Hero here.
*This Taoist is no Chang San-Fung / Zhang Sanfang.
***Or finally making my long hoped for film, Peter Greenaway’s Batman and Robin.
*There is one disreputable Taoist and then there is Chu Qiuji, who is extremely reputable, but incredibly judgmental and harsh. I am afraid to think of what Chu Qiuji might be without Taoism.

Brief Review: Hong hai xing dong (2018)
Rated the film 3 stars out of 5. A film that earned virtually all of its hefty box office gross (~USD 579 million) from its country of origin (China), it is a blockbuster action movie that unsubtly doubles as national propaganda. A North American filmgoer might argue that this film best parallels Black Hawk Down (2001) in terms of its plot, though with less ambiguity in defining the heroes and villains of the story and with far more outlandish action. For the latter, the suspension of disbelief can be trying at times, the ridiculous use of a rocket launcher in one scene, a soldier continuing to battle despite high levels of gory suffering in another, and the many explosions throughout the film that are rarely seamless in their use of computer effects. That being said, once beginning to tolerate the lack of subtlety and excessive action, the entertainment value of the film improves, the motion picture clearly promoting the might of the Chinese navy with a story loosely based on the evacuation of 225 foreign nationals during the 2015 Yemeni Civil War. Cinematographers Yuen Man Fung and Wing-Hang Wong work with director Dante Lam to consistently make great use of wide shots throughout the film, giving the action scenes the proper visual scope for eye-popping amazement, even if the stunts may not make realistic sense or the computer effects overdo things a bit too much. Still, with the expectation of scene after scene of action, it is easy to see why the film was so popular and, regardless of its underlying political message, is worth watching for action movie fans. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6878882/

Ip Man’s peaceful life in Foshan changes after Gong Yutian seeks an heir for his family in Southern China. Ip Man then meets Gong Er who challenges him for the sake of regaining her family’s honor. After the Second Sino-Japanese War, Ip Man moves to Hong Kong and struggles to provide for his family. In the mean time, Gong Er chooses the path of vengeance after her father was killed by Ma San. Set amidst the turbulent times in China that saw the end of the rule of Manchu dynasty, the embryonic republic established and then the Japanese invasion, we meet a man (Tony Leung) who lives peacefully in the small town of Foshan until he meets Wing Chun grand master Gong Yutian (Qingxiang Wang) who is looking for a successor. That is the beginning of a journey that will see him become a grand master of the martial art himself, whilst meeting, marrying and surviving! It’s a superb looking film but for me just a little too over-stylised. The combat scenes are creatively choreographed but the use of the slowed-down visual effects didn’t always work. Leung and the director are clearly on the same wavelength, and the story itself is a fascinating look at the rise of one culture through the wreckage of an ancient one. It’s also clear that women too had their place in this society – and it wasn’t always where stereotype might assume. A strong contribution from the adept and nimble Ziyi Zhang (Gong Er) demonstrates that well as battle lines between the old and new, the powerful and the aspirational are drawn and a good old dose of ancient tribal warfare sets up a proud story of heritage, loyalty and skill. Though a little soporifically scored at times, this is an enjoyable mix of history with touch of romance and plenty of action, and is well worth a couple of hours.

Hong Kong Protestors Support Businesses by Shopping 'Yellow'
Tumblr media
In contrast, "blue" pro-government and pro-China businesses are frequent targets for vandalism or boycotts. At Fu Kee Noodles in Wan Chai, diners slurp wonton under the watchful gaze of a gas mask-wearing Pepe the Frog, which has become a mascot of the pro-democracy movement. "This is a yellow shop, the boss supports the protesters, so we decided to come," said a 47-year-old advertising employee calling himself Gilbert. "The most important thing in Hong Kong now is that we need to help each other, especially when the government does not help us." Posters and post-it notes with pro-democracy messages cover the wall by the cashier. Owner Kwong Chun-hin, 30, told AFP he hopes the yellow-blue tagging will become a trend "because this is good for us. I mean not just my shop, I mean all shops". Pro-democracy protesters are now seeking to reward shops and restaurants that support their cause by building a 'yellow' economy Showing Support Some businesses openly advertise their sympathies, undeterred by the possible loss of revenues. Apps and websites advise users on which way shops and restaurants sway. At her bakery in Sai Wan district, Naomi Suen sells cookies and mooncakes decorated with protest slogans. "I don't know the exact definition of the yellow economy. I am just doing what I can to support Hong Kong people," Suen told AFP. In Hung Hom, site of some of the most violent clashes of the movement in November when students barricaded themselves inside a university, diners queuing outside Lung Mun Cafe expressed a similar sentiment. "We want to support this restaurant because it supports the whole movement... supports democracy," said a 26-year-old man named Justin. Eateries, shops and other properties branded "blue", meanwhile, have been attacked by black-clad vandals wielding petrol bombs. Many Chinese bank branches are boarded up or protected by metal shutters after their windows were smashed. Dozens of restaurants belonging to local catering giant Maxim's were ransacked after the daughter of the group's founder labeled protesters "rioters" and said she had given up on Hong Kong's young. Starbucks, which in Hong Kong is operated by Maxim's, has seen its shops trashed. With retail sales down and tourist numbers plunging, the economy appears headed for its first annual contraction since 2009. Starbucks, which in Hong Kong is operated by Maxim's, has seen its shops trashed Driven by Strong Belief The government has blamed the protests but the US-China trade war has also had an impact. Despite growing polarisation, divisions between yellow and blue are not always so clear-cut. The founders of HKongs Mall, an online shopping platform launched after the protests erupted, say they are trying to ease the city's reliance on goods from mainland China. The site has seen orders rise more than 20-fold since its October debut and now employs 15 protesters. But it still has to buy from "blue" suppliers, who remain a majority in the market, conceded a volunteer e-commerce manager at the firm who requested anonymity. Diners slurp wonton under the watchful gaze  of a gas mask-wearing Pepe the Frog, which has become a mascot of the pro-democracy movement "Our first step is to provide choices for people. If the consumers agree with your ideology then they will buy goods from you," she told AFP. "If we don't have to rely on Chinese merchants and their capital, then we will be successful." But analysts say the protest movement is unlikely to reshape the city's economic landscape. "The economic pillars of Hong Kong -- finance, logistics and real estate -- are controlled by one or a few companies, which means it's largely impossible for consumers to rock the boat," said Andrew Yuen Chi-lok of the Chinese University of Hong Kong's business school. However, Jacky Fung, a researcher at the Hong Kong Policy Research Institute, said "yellow" shoppers are adding fresh impetus to the protests and challenging the idea that civil rights activism always incurs economic consequences from Beijing. "In a general downturn, such consumption, particularly consumption driven by a strong belief in human rights, can be very powerful," Fung said.  PICTURES BY PHILIP FONG/afp by Xinqi SU and Ayaka MCGILL Read the full article

FILM REVIEW: Master Z: The Ip Man Legacy
Tumblr media
Jin Zhang and Michelle Yeoh in Master Z The IpMan Legacy
By Dwight Brown, NNPA Newswire Film Critic
At first glimpse, this martial arts film is a tad disorientating. Nothing looks real. The footage looks like it was shot entirely on a soundstage. There are few to no exterior shots with actual sun or moonlight. But, if you acclimate yourself to this process, you can enjoy this curious production that sometimes feels like a play, a dance performance or an elaborate opera for people who block, chop, kick and punch.
Jin Zhang and Xing Yu in Master Z The Ip Man Legacy
Before the characters take the stage, here’s a little history: Ip Man was a grandmaster of the martial art Wing Chun. This fighting style is a traditional Southern Chinese Kung Fu that tends to be more defensive than offensive. The movements are quick, strong and soft all at the same time. Ip Man was famous for being legendary fighter/actor Bruce Lee’s teacher. Also, director Woo-Pin Yuen is a well-known Chinese actor/stuntman famous for creating the action choreography for the Matrix series and the Oscar-winner Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon.
In the 1960s, Cheung Tin Chi (Jin Zhang, The Grandmaster) and his young son Fung have relocated from China to Hong Kong. Cheung, once a Win Chun expert, comes to HK after experiencing a humbling defeat in China by Ip Man. Now he owns a small grocery store and tries to live under the radar. Neighborhood kids bully his boy and disrespect him too. Yet, Cheung refuses to get drawn into any conflict.
Xing Yu, Jin Zhang, Michelle Yeoh and Kevin Cheng in Master Z The Ip Man Legacy
Haphazardly, Tin Chi is forced into a fight with local thugs when he comes to the rescue of Julia (Yan Liu, Badges of Fury), a nightclub singer. She’s defending her opium-addicted friend Nana (Chrissie Chau). Nana owes money to her drug dealer Tso Sai Kit (Kevin Cheng), and Kit and his men attack the women. Tin Chi saves they day, which pisses off the aggressors.
That good deed sets the single dad on a different trajectory.  He meets Julia’s nightclub-owning brother Fu (Xing Yu), Kit’s older/wiser crime lord sister Kwan (Michelle Yeoh, Crazy Rich Asians and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon) and the smarmy, oaf-sized American ex-pat, restaurant owner and drug kingpin Owen Davidson ( Dave Bautista, former WWE champion turned actor in films like Riddick and Blade Runner 2049).
The plotline by screenwriters Edmond Wong and Tai-lee Chan (the Ip Man trilogy) unfurls and their homage to Ip Man’s style is evidenced as a bounty of characters hits the screen. Rivalries, infernos, street fights and revenge attacks mount. Action scenes explode at the right intervals and are well-paced (editors Kai Pong Chow and Chi-Leung Kwong). Martial arts fans will eat it up, even if some of the stunts employ invisible wires to help the cast leap over opponents and climb buildings. The target audience won’t care one bit.
Dave Bautista co-stars in Master Z The Ip Man Legacy
When Tin Chi crashes into walls and breaks them, you can clearly see that they’re made of thin wood or cardboard. The production looks fake, like a stage setting for a play and oddly it’s a style choice that becomes increasingly engaging. Think back to Francis Ford Coppola’s One from the Heart. That movie was shot almost entirely on Coppola’s Zoetrope sound stages. Master Z… takes a similar approach, which can make viewers think the production quality is rickety or inventive, depending on their tastes. Add in the colorful, well-lit cinematography (David Fu and Seppe Van Grieken), period costumes (Joyce Chan) and saturated colors (art direction by Raymond Chan) and the visuals are a lock.
With Woo-Ping Yuen as the mastermind, the fight scenes are kinetic, wondrous and almost balletic. At times the combat is violent. Other times it’s as if the fighters are involved in highly elaborate and tightly constructed choreography. Imagine West Side Story told with an Asian twist, where the Jets and Sharks gangs go at it kung fu style. Then hold that thought and ponder if Master Z… would make a captivating theater piece.
Jin Zhang’s resemblance to Johnny Depp is almost uncanny. Same lips, pout and stature. He’s every inch a leading man. Yan Liu as the feisty Julia is radiant. Michelle Yeoh brings traces of her persona from CTHG to mind. At 56 years old she can still throw down some very convincing kicks and hits against men half her age. Lurking in the background is a mysterious hitman played by Tony Jaa, who looks like he could beat up an army.
The script takes jabs at British imperialism as it depicts Her Majesty’s men taking bribes to control the local police. They’re getting paid under the table by Owen Davidson, who is masterfully played by Dave Bautista. The WWE showman is the size of a truck. In fact, the final knockdown, drag out battle between Tin Chi and Owen is a complete marvel—in a David versus Goliath way.
Check your disbelief and cynicism at the door. If you’re looking for an artistic martial arts film on the level of Zhang Yimou’s elegant House of Flying Daggers, this isn’t it. Yet, you can still enjoy this very creative and novel piece for its performances, storytelling, rivalries and well-staged action scenes.
