Yubel - The Loving Defender Forever

-chanting- Yubel! Yubel! Yubel! I never got to the episodes with Yubel when I watched GX as a kid, but their appearance in this card feels like the ultimate love letter to the series. For starters, their appearance is somewhere in between all three of Yubel's major forms (normal, Terror Incarnate, and Ultimate Nightmare), possessing some of the hairier portions of Terror Incarnate (tail and wings), a draconic head in place of their right arm (which looks like a mix of their latter two forms), and eyeballs on their knees and horns on their (humanoid) head (like Ultimate Nightmare). I also really enjoy that they got to keep their original coloration here that was done away with for their regular body (i.e. no gray coverage on their torso). In addition to all of this, Yubel's design here is a direct and obvious reference paying homage to the beloved Elemental HERO Flame Wingman. I'm kind of surprised a card like this didn't pop up sooner, what with Yubel's dragon left arm looking nearly exactly like Flame Wingman's (along with many other striking similarities, if I'm being honest). Pose is killer, love the added sparkly effects around their hand as if they're giving a dramatic flourish, and the background is flashy without being distracting.

One of the very few duel monster cards that successfully managed to have a romantic relationship with a Yugioh protagonist

Beautiful genderfuckery powerful monster who was an entire antagonist! How many times was a monster the antagonist? The fusion with Jaden/Judai is just so cool and I love their dynamic.

Winged Kuriboh is used by Judai Yuki (Jaden Yuki in the dub). Its stats are the following:

Attribute: LIGHT

Level: 1

Type: FAIRY / EFFECT

Effect Type: TRIGGER

You all thought Kuriboh was great??!!? Winged Kuriboh is even better. It's got all the things you love about Kuriboh (small, fluffy, adorable). The color palette is very slightly adjusted to be Better, and he's got cute lil wings. Also the card is foil. In terms of gameplay mechanics, OG Kuriboh gets you out of damage from ONE(1) fight, and only if it's still in your hand to discard. Winged Kuriboh has to be summoned, but ends battle damage for the whole turn. Narratively, Winged Kuriboh is with Jaden more than OG was ever with the Yugis, and they have conversations and are true friends.

hes just a kuriboh with wings, but is literally jadens little buddy at the start of the series… pls vote for the cutie here

Why I like them/why I don’t: it's wild, when i like initially watched GX i didnt like yubel very much??? im not the biggest fan of a lot of choices in GX s3 and for whatever reason they didnt rly click with me... ive grown to like them a lot over time though :^) the concept of 'the human person from thousands of years and a dimension away ago volunteered to get turned into a dragon demon because they cared so much about someone and then they were also made into a duel monsters card that got sent to space and went crazy up there. from the evil space light' is BANANAS. PEAK YUGIOH. and their design does kick so much ass. i wish we got to see more of them post fusing with jaden and Just Hanging Out :(

What I like about their appearance: again like. it's a kickass design. The one boob is fucking legendary. But i especially like their two-tone hair and freaky mishmash arms,the way everything in their design chaotically but cohesive reads as "fiendish being representative of fusion as a concept" is really cool.

Do I prefer their dub names or original names?: same in both! yoobyyyy yooble yoooouuuuu

OTP: ok it's like. technically my otp And notp are the same thing; ive talked about it in the past but im just not really the biggest fan of jaden/yubel in any romantic context (in general i dont really like 'fused together for eternity' as a romantic gesture (author's note: this user is aro) but also like. yubel knew the jaden we know and see since he was a little kid and it's just rly not my thing keeping that in consideration and Also shipping them 😭 sorry. it's weird. BUT i do really like jaden and yubel's dynamic, and from a sort of platonic soulmates stance i go a little crazy bonkers. i read a fic once that had this element of yubel like. having to reconcile with the fact the Present Day Jaden that exists isn't 1:1 the same person as the king they loved so long ago but still vowing to protect him and i love shit like that.

OT3: i do like the absolutely toxic mire potential of jaden/yubel/jesse relationship drama. good lord.

Favourite card they use: themself :3 i do especially love Terror Incarnate...sickass two headed monster dragon.....

Favourite moment they were in: i do love everything about when they possessed Jesse, from the all timer Zane duel to killing Adrian (good) to the character design and expressions. just fantastic. peak danabait

Least favourite moment: as much as i really like yubelfied!marcel from a design standpoint god that shit in the spirit world desert just does nothing for me :,/ WHEN THEY FUSED THE STUDENTS INTO DUEL MONSTERS??? WEIRD AS HELL. NOT MY FAVORITE.

Going by the initial cards of the protagonists that can be cover cards:

**Yugi: Yugi's initial Deck is very large, so there are a few options that can be used.

***Summoned Skull is the most obvious option.

***Elves (Celtic Guardian, Mystical Elf) are the second most obvious option.

***Horn of the Unicorn users (Feral Imp, Beaver Warrior, Griffore) are the third most obvious option, though they would require some work.

**Judai: Judai's inital Elemental HEROes cannot be in a set together, because there are too many of them, and there is also Winged Kuriboh to consider. So, the most likely option would be to divide them up, with Flame Wingman related ones being one group, and Thunder Giant related ones being another.

Next Winged Kuriboh could be a Level 12 one based on the Level 12 Yubel Fusion, or Divine Neos, or a Level 8 one based on Shining Flare Wingman.

**Yusei: Yusei's Deck, while more limited than its later incarnation, is still very varied, and heterogenous, as such any option will cause radically different outcomes.

Junk Warrior's initial Synchro components would need to get substantial upgrades to justify a Junk Warrior focused theme, Road Warrior would be the easier option, but it is introduced much later.

**Yuma: This one is really easy. Just introduce Chaos versions of initial Numbers (Leviathan Dragon, and Terror-Byte, in particular), and have upgraded versions of Yuma's generic monsters. Gagaga Magician, and Gogogo Golem already have their Xyz variants.

**Yuya: We already discussed this, but Yuya has a lot of initial Performapals that aren't Pendulums, which can get Pendulum retrains, redesigned for each Summoning method.

**Yusaku: Alliance Insight covered all the ideal options for Yusaku, so we have the remaining starting Cyberse cards like Salvagent Driver.

For Links, the most likely option would be the 2300 ATK DARK retrain of Firewall Dragon, but an upgraded version of Vector Scare Archfiend (besides Linkmail Archfiend), would work the best.

Picked up a few Phantom Nightmare packs and some Battles Of Legend: Chapter 1 boxes this morning -- didn't pull Yubel - Terror Incarnate like I'd hoped, but considering the pulls I did get (including the alt art Utopia, I guess I can't complain all that much, haha

Sorry to be that guy, but as a Yubel Stan I gotta point out

Star Eater's effect stops it from being affected by other cards effects, sure, and when it's synchro summoned other cards and effects can't be activated... but the most important of Yubel's effects here are continuous and self-targeting, meaning they're not considered "activated" if Yubel was already on the field before Star Eater

-This card cannot be destroyed by battle

-You take no battle damage from battles involving this card

The "damage reflection" effect targets the opposing player's life points directly, only referencing the attacking monster's stats for the damage amount, meaning it's not considered to be "affecting" Star Eater.

So, if I'm correct (always a shaky statement when talking about Yugioh, a game where the only unbroken rule is that every rule has an exception), Star Eater... is actually pretty ineffective, here.

Plus, if you DO destroy Yubel, the Terror Incarnate summoning effect isn't in response to the synchro summon, so it can be activated, it activates from inside the graveyard, so negating effects on the field won't stop it, and it only targets Terror Incarnate, itself, so Star Eater being "unaffected by card effects" doesn't stop it, either...

I'm so sorry but... in the words of another yugioh post, "the dog stays."
