The Best Hit - Episodes 1+2 Review
For a season recently I really could only watch things with the emotional range of a teaspoon, as it were--1 Night & 2 Days, We Got Married, some Running Man (but not the one where Gary leaves).
I’m extremely busy still, but in a different way, where having something a little more gripping to sit and watch (instead of do dishes to) is on the table again. While I really want to watch Reply 1988, I know that show probably has some gut-punches in it, or at least heartstring tugs. So I settled on The Best Hit--especially after seeing .gifsets of Yoon Si Yoon as a befuddled time-traveler.
While in the promo materials this show is presented as a light story about youth and show-biz, the opening episodes ground it in more reality--filtered but still.
(After completely confusing me in the opening with a pastiche of Enter the Dragon, complete with Chinese voiceover, that lasts one minute and twenty seconds. Since my sister’s been watching C-dramas I thought something had gone terribly wrong with DramaFever... I had to read the DramaBeans recap to figure out what was happening.
I mention this to forewarn you, fair reader.)
While played for laughs, the family photo session where the photographer keeps tripping up because of his assumptions about family structure are playing him false, there’s still a little sense of bittersweet. We can get an idea right away why “Mom” and “Dad” aren’t married, when Mom is first seen putting flowers on a memorial to Hyun Jae, the 90s idol who disappeared just after breaking up his J-2 duo.
Ji Hoon, the son of the family, is sneaking out of civic service exam lectures to go train as an idol at a rival entertainment agency--but he’s facing the fact that he will soon be too old to keep chasing this dream. Woo Seung, who takes his place in class, is pretty brusque and confident around him and most people...but has a mainly absent mother and a long-time relationship blowing up in her face. (I expect to really enjoy Ji Hoon suffering from his crush on her and the inevitable strain of having Hyun Jae show up.)
Mom is planning a comeback as a former pop singer, but she left the industry in scandal, with the whole country hating her. It’s not going well.
When Hyun Jae-from-the-90s drops into their midst (almost literally) the hijinks are going to get turned up a notch--but I have a feeling, pretty soon the angst and pending trouble will, too.
Meanwhile, Yoon Si Yoon and Immortal Song favorite Hong Kyung Min as J2 actually performed this throwback 90s track on Music Bank to get footage, and the song is actually good? Though its pretty obvious they didn’t know the back-end choreography as well, haha. And Hong Kyung Min looks way more than 10 years older than YSY...
This show promises to be just as fun as I’d hoped, but with just enough emotional veritas to keep me watching.
Perhaps slowly. Though only one more week of intense summer classes!

2020 Creator Wrap
Favourite Works
Rules: It’s time to love yourselves! Choose your 5 (or so) favorite works you created in the past year (fics, art, edits, etc.) and link them below to reflect on the amazing things you brought into the world in 2020. Tag as many writers/artists/etc. as you want (fan or original) so we can spread the love and link each other to awesome works.
This is crazy late, but I've finally gotten time to give it a think. Thanks for tagging me @applepiips!
The subject matter on this blog is pretty limited haha, but here are my fave works of 2020:
1. My reviews of Psychopath Diary and Train
I forget how much I love to write just for the sake of writing. These were so much fun to do, especially since they weren't necessarily planned. These were things I was thinking about and I finally decided to do a brain dump. I hope I'm able to do a lot more writing this year!
2. The Yoon Si Yoon Global website launch
I said it in the post, but this was such a labour of love and I'm so glad we were able to pull it off. It's nice to know that there is another place I can write for 😊.
3. My YSY throwback series
This has been so much fun! I've only done 2 of his works so far, High Kick and Kim Tak Gu, but even with these, it's been nice find the pics and clips that I wanted to use. I will definitely be continuing (and completing) the throwback series this year.
4. This Train gifset
I've been making gifs for a little while now, but I still have so, so much to learn. I have trouble with clarity and colour, but this is one of the first times I felt pretty happy with how it turned out. The rest of the sets became easier after this. I definitely still have a lot of improving to do, but I definitely really enjoy doing them.
These aren't necessarily the most creative, but I had a lot of fun making all of them.
Since I'm so late, I'm sure everyone has already done theirs, so instead of tagging, I'll open it to anyone who wants to take part 😊.
