POV: you're me looking at Wilbur Soot "coming back" video, as he explains that he's indeed NOT ADDRESSING ANYTHING AND IS AVOIDING IT COMPLETELY only to be announcing a tour in Australia and a new song like he thought people were gonna be excited about a man who hurt member of the public, admitted to bitting people even the told him to stop, hurt Shelby after she'd withdrawn her consent, admitted to biting Niki Nihachu LIVE and playing it off as "well tell them how horrible I am boo hoo", hitting Technoblade in the arm after his post cancer treatment surgery and laughing about it LIVE, basically screwing over the MCC video production takes because now they can't use him in update videos effectively making the whole event less popular meaning that on occasion less people from charities get money, giving a disingenuous apology, being rude to the people hosting his concerts, stomping on tommyinnit hands TWICE in a video for "ruining his day" / to make fun of him, being egotistical enough to write himself back into the narrative of Dsmp after he died because he basically explained on stream that it wasn't "heading in the direction he wanted it to" and believe it wasn't good enough and most importantly shatter the trust in his ACTUALLY fans that could afford/would go to see him
Because the only fans he has now are 10-15yr old girls who are "ride or die" for any form of man in modern day media, telling people to kill themselves and get r*pe if they initially didn't support their ideologies and who CAN'T EVEN AFFORD TO FLY OUT TO AUSTRALIA TO GO SEE HIM-

Watcher fans sure are entitled and a little insane, ngl. "No one is going to sign up for your service! We're all poor! You've made the worst decision, and you'll be back in no time!" Saying this directly to the creators really reminds you of how low the respect for people you don't personally know has gone. I miss the forth wall between creator and audience.
I get and fully understand not having the money to support them, but... Watcher does have fans with money. A lot of them actually. They have merch sales. Their live tour sells out most venues. They have thousands of supporters on Patreon, where the cheapest tier is $5. They're able to gauge the rough finances of their staunchest supporters; that's how they landed on the subscription price. Yes, this move will reduce their viewership in sheer numbers, but to say all of their fans are broke and none will follow/support is factually incorrect.
It may not be a decision everyone agrees with, but severing the limitations of advertisers and youtube in favor of artistic freedom is a good thing. Yes, even if it comes with a loss of revenue. They understand that risk.
Also, I'm begging people to stop treating this like "another Netflix" or something and instead look at it as, "I am supporting a creator I like, similar to Patreon." They literally said in the video that they don't care if you share accounts. Get five friends, and you'll pay $1/mo.
I hate feeling compelled to rant in favor of their decision because I have my own reservations about whether it's the best move. However, I know it's not a choice they made lightly, and I like to think they understand that they'll need to branch out like crazy to entice subscribers.

D'you think the suits at youtube realize that they've created a site so fundamentally hostile to actually watching videos that it's easier to just open videos in private windows than turn off adblock?

so huh. after watching all these youtubers (you know, people who do know how youtube works and how much money you can get off youtube and patreon and sponsorships etc) analyze watcher's numbers and statistics and all... can we finally say it's all for capitalism's sake? thanks.

this channel is of course clearly catering to the army of children that storm youtube every day by playing colorful childrens games but what's really strange to me is that a ton of their videos are an hour or more long. do kids like that? do they watch the full video? or are they trying to be like, children's background noise?

"Oh so they're capitalists now" motherfucker it's all capitalism. Youtube having 50 ads a video with an in-video sponsor read that takes a quarter of the video is capitalism. Be real

I continue to find it deeply frustrating that I got a two-book deal with a traditional publisher, but still won't have the resources to actually make the second book.
I get 18k per book with the payments split up. The way things play out, I get the 12k before I start, and the last 6k upon delivery or publication. I make my comics with colored pencils; each page takes anywhere from 10-15 hours to complete, and I can manage 4 pages a week when I'm In The Zone. Each book is 180+ pages long. So yeah. That's a full time job for about a year if I work like a machine.
But I can't live off 12k for a whole year, which means I gotta do part time work, which means the book takes longer to produce, which means that 12k gets stretched out over like three years. I get fucked either way, basically.
It's just. Not great! That there are only like...two grants out there which might apply to a graphic novelist working with a traditional publisher, and they only give out like. Maybe $500?
It's insane to me?? I guess?? That I'm gonna have to Kickstarter a traditionally-published book. This is the sort of thing I expected to like, not have to worry about as much if I went the way of traditional publishing. There are definitely benefits to this approach (!!!), but I honestly don't know how I'm gonna get the money to actually fulfill my contract! Which?? What???

if youtube is going to insist on having that many ads, they should at least give me the option to do them all at once at the beginning. interspersing the ads throughout is wrong and evil. So is making them play at the end (if you do this they should be ones that don't have sound. blease.) Anyway this environment is absolutely inhospitable to someone here to listen to ambient music while working (me) or stuff specifically designed to fall asleep to. to, you know, fall asleep to (also me).

Can’t you consume TMA content without supporting rusty quill if you just find an unofficial transcript?
i think so, yeah, it's not like you're giving them any financial support or ad revenue. i'm pretty sure if you have adblock on youtube they also don't get any financial benefits from you listening to their recordings uploaded there, but i'm not 100% sure on that one.
