ALSO, learned yesterday with horror, that all in my pole dance class (even our coach) don't watch pole dance performance videos on youtube. Only short snippets on instagram. (some don't watch them at all, which is even worse for me lol)

WHat do you mean?!?!? Why... how are they even all in that sport then??? I got into it because I fell hard in love with one dancer and the sport at the same time! Also because the pole dance scene is diverse af! (well, not as much as I wished, but we have all genders, sexualitys and a wide age, body and heritage range, even people with disabilities)

Because I saw someone claiming that having a G rating for fic doesn’t make sense because it’s illegal for people under 13 to read fic on ao3: No.

What is illegal in the US, according to the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act, is for a website to collect any personal information from anyone under the age of 13 without their parents’ permission, including an email address. So you cannot legally sign up for an account on ao3 or any other site until you’re 13.

Note that COPPA is about privacy, not about preventing kids from accessing inappropriate content. As long as they’re not giving anyone any personal information, kids can do whatever the fuck they want. Read fanfic, watch YouTube videos, read through someone’s tumblr or Twitter timeline (assuming none of this is locked to logged-in users, hidden behind an 18+ age check, etc). It’s their parents’ responsibility to keep an eye on their internet use and make sure they’re not reading stuff that’s age-inappropriate, but of course most parents can’t monitor everything their kid looks at 24/7, especially if they have internet access at places other than home (don’t get me started on how much my kid has been allowed to surf the web when he should be doing work at school, starting at age like 8 which is too young to be expected to resist that temptation even if he didn’t have adhd).

So yes, 12-year-olds or 10-year-olds can, fully legally, read fic on ao3. They can even use the filters, since that’s not personal information and doesn’t violate their privacy.
