real talk for a sec: in what godforsaken reality/dimension/parallel universe would Andrew's drugs be considered medication?

this kid, who's normally known to be eerily quiet most of the time (with occasional violent tendencies when provoked), is legally forced to take these "meds" and he starts talking randomly in book/movie lines, they make him look and act high when on them, give him extreme withdrawal symptoms, make him fall asleep in places and around people he would never fall asleep otherwise, make him think that pulling his knives to someone's neck as a (more believable) threat is somehow the correct way to handle a situation.

like?? if anything that medication made him even more violent.

what sane person would see him react that way think "yeah, those are the right meds for him"?

I think giving Neil DID(dissociative identity disorder) in fanfics(or metas) is a cop out, there I said it. I heard somewhere that any good conman’s different identities have a little of their real selves in them, a little of truth. Instead of having Neil face the fact that all of his past identities(including Nathaniel) were him and is still apart of him, they just give him DID. In Blame It On My Youth By youreyestheyglow they have Neil face that Nathaniel is still apart of him and maybe always will be and Neil ends up asking Andrew something like “Could you love Nathaniel too?” and Andrew of course is like “Yes” without hesitation. When I read that I was like yes more of that, this fandom needs more of that.

And also just to be clear I’m not hating on anyone who writes/likes Neil having DID, I just wanted to share/rant my opinion about it a little. And to encourage anyone who reads this to write more Neil/Nathaniel and Andrew fanfic.

Andrew shows his phone to Neil—Aaron. Answers it. “What’s up? You’re on speaker. Neil’s here.”

“Good,” Aaron says. “I’m pissed at both of you.”

Andrew looks at Neil, panicking.

“You fucking assholes,” Aaron rails, not waiting for them to answer, sending Andrew into a visible spiral. “My wife doesn’t speak German!” Oh. “Freddie’s speaking half in German and my wife doesn’t understand a fucking word he says, you jackasses, what did you do?”

“Gave you a bilingual baby,” Neil says, grinning. “Like Angela.”

“Both of Angela’s parents are bilingual! Katelyn is not!”

“Teach her,” Andrew suggests, trying to keep himself under control. “Bonding time.”

“We’re both doctors! We don’t want to spend our bonding time with me teaching her German, that’s fucking dumb bullshit. Jesus. Bilingual baby. Hey. You guys have five years.”

“For what?” Neil asks.

“If in five years I don’t have the smartest baby in the neighborhood, I’m fucking coming after you. This had better pay off.”

“I mean, in five years, his competition will just be John,” Neil points out. “There won’t be any other babies in our neighborhood.”

“And John is stupid,” Aaron says thoughtfully.

“Is he?” Neil asks. “I’m honestly curious, I don’t know how smart babies are supposed to be.”

“I’m sure he’s fine,” Aaron says dismissively. “But. Five years, fuckers. Don’t think I’ll forget.”

“I’ll be sure to remember,” Andrew says solemnly.

“I’ll hold you to it. You’ll have to babysit him more often, you’re the only people who have a shot at understanding him right now, he’s pulling the same bullshit as Angela.”

Neil grins at Andrew. Andrew relaxes. He hasn’t ruined his relationship with Aaron. “We can handle it, probably.”

“Fucking better be able to. Okay. I’m leaving. Gotta try to get some sleep before my rude-ass baby wakes me up.”

“Sleep well,” Andrew says, stilted.

It takes Aaron a second too long. “You too.”

Andrew hangs up, before Aaron can consider saying anything else.

“Emotionally constipated,” Neil says, grinning.

Why do I personally enjoy gay romances to het ones? Preference and taste probably. I also tend to enjoy the angst, longing, tropes, passion, etc in the way its written more than I do in the ways those things are written between a straight couple. And that's not to say I don't enjoy straight romances either! I have plently of het ships I love too, and a few good romances that aren't gay 😂 I just have a preference, and that's okay! As for recommendations!! I have a LOTS! If you want to tell me about what YOU like to read, I can give even better recs. But for in general, some of my favorites...

I spent literally 12-13 hours reading yesterday bc I have been going non-stop for a bit and needed it.

I spent that entire time reading the aftg fic Blame it on My Youth by youreyestheyglow. It's so fucking cute and funny and dramatic and I love every fucking second. I'm on chapter 29 of currently 130 and it feels like I can never possibly catch up but I really hope I do.
