Beth’s pain is most profound, even if she just feels a foggy aspect of the entirety of it all. She wishes a glass full of grape juice in one of their old cups that their dad keeps in a glass cabinet for special occasions, that she immediately brings out when he’s not home for pure disrespectful reasons. Mike is a butterfly. She’s known that about him for years. He flits from place to place, always being in the right spot. It’s a talent. Beth does not. She simmers on the kitchen island and stares at him until he notices her, until the rage and betrayal overtakes her and she makes a noise not unlike a steaming kettle until he comes over.

One of the things that I think sometimes gets lost when we talk about what's appropriate in fandom spaces is the notion that things can be appropriate in one space, but not for another. And that doesn't mean that the thing that's inappropriate in that setting is wrong, it just means that it's rude in that space. I think people want a single set of rules that's appropriate everywhere, but the thing is, you have to be able to assess the situation, and adjust your behaviour accordingly.

So an example. I have a fairly popular text post that was me asking about c!phil and religion in all innocence, and someone said "the only thing I have to say about c!phil is that he worships on his knees, thank you and goodnight". And I reblogged it like "I can't believe I forgot about how this fandom does phil analysis", cause it was at the height of the dilfza memes.

Anyways that's obviously a phil-is-happily-married/oral sex joke, in an oblique innuendo way, and on this site, where Phil is not here, and his friends are not here, with it being clear I was talking about the block man character, and we make jokes about sex and profanity (a very popular url scheme for a long time was "[name]shugecock" (or smalldick, depending on the joke)— that's a fine joke to make. I'm an adult, I can make sex jokes about fictional characters on the sex joke fictional character social media site.

If I was to make that joke in Philza's twitch chat, a) in his face, b) with his wife modding, c) in an enviroment where people aren't prepped for sex jokes, d) with it being not clear if I was talking about the cubito or about the real guy, that would be wildly inappopriate. I would be banned in every chat Philza mods in and I would deserve it.

That doesn't mean that it's inappropriate to make the joke in the first place though, just because I wouldn't do it at a Phil meet and greet. It means you gotta learn to read the room. (And like, sometimes it's hard to learn to read the room, but you can do it by pure brute-force memorization. I did.)

This is the same theory that underlies the fact that you can call your friends a bitch in a friendly way, because you are friends and you know each other's boundaries, but if you call your boss a bitch, you will be fired. There are rules about workplace appropriateness, and there are rules about what's appropriate in front of kids (I teach teens, I do not swear in front of them, I swear a LOT in front of my roommate), and there are rules about what's appropriate in different fandom spaces. Participating in an exchange about pregnancy and babies with your favourite blorbo of the moment? Great. Showing the actor gift art you got of him pregnant? No. Bad. Go directly to jail, do not pass go, do not collect two hundred dollars.

The thing that concerns me is that I think there are slight signs that as we get more comfortable with sexy jokes and offcolour remarks as a MCYT fandom (QSMP is the big banner example but it happens with other smps), we're taking what's appropriate in one space (tumblr, home of the brain worms, where I have seen the blog "philzaswetpussy" on my dash), and we're bringing it into places that it's not appropriate (sure, slimeariana is clearly canon, but maybe don't put the actual dicks-out fan art in the art tag on twitter that slime checks). Cause we can obviously tell that the rules twitter is going with are silly for here, so it's full speed ahead for roier/spreen etc, but the trick here is that it's full speed ahead HERE, or in fandom servers, and not necessarily in the streamer's faces.

We have a bunch of situations where creators have said that it's not their place to weigh in on shipping or nsfw etc, and people have taken that as a go ahead and that's fine, but thats still something where I'd like, caution people that just because they said "not gonna look at it not my deal", that doesn't mean that like, you should make it difficult for them to avoid looking at it. Talking about scitties is an honourable tradition, but telling scar that he makes you question your sexuality in his TTS— I made a horrified noise in real life and the cats came to look at me.

And I'm talking about the shipping, but this is also a thing with like— sometimes I see a streamer and I go "my friend you just vividly described neurodivergent symptoms" but it is ABSOLUTELY not my place to say that in their chat. It might not even be appropriate to make comments about it on my blog, with the amount of followers I have. I have to keep the "streamer just described the ADHD experience again :pensive:" comments for the group chat. And we all nod and go "yeah sounds like streamer", and we do not put it in his face, cause that's inappropriate.

We get to have fun with the fictional characters, including off-colour fun, but we still have to remember that there are real people who don't know us who are steering those fictional characters around, and it can be profoundly weird to see some of the (stuff that is appropriate in fandom spaces!) just up in your face in the regular fan art tag.

Just think about the space you're in, and who you're in front of, and if a CC notice is actually likely, and if a CC notice would be Very Bad actually with what you're doing, and keep the "world's sluttiest absent father" bracket (with associated slutty fan art) for here, not with the streamer tagged on twitter.

BUT I also have a special place in my heart for the lurkers or tumblr users who never follow, but regularly visit my blog

Reblogs over likes yes, but I will be equally happy if you like 20 posts in a row even if you don't engage

Please engage though. Ask culture dying. We (usually) love when people ask us our favorite headcanon or for clarification on canon facts. If someone doesn't want asks, they usually say so. When in doubt, send in a comment. It's always welcome.

Just because I didn't respond within five seconds doesn't mean I'm ignoring you. I do have a life. But also, sometimes it's hard to respond for whatever reason (thanks autism) I do see your kind words and I love them. I'm not mad at you either. I'm just exhausted 24/7 However please understand that I do not owe you my presence all hours of the day. Yes, even if we are close friends.

Please treat me how you want to be treated.

I have almost 90,000 posts, mostly reblogs, but I have a lot of content and I do not mind you doom scrolling. In the same vain, do not assume I was the same person that posted one, two, five or ten years ago. Going through my blog to find "problematic" content only wastes time and tells me you think people are incapable of growth and change. Do better.

Keeping a schedule is tantamount to keeping people engaged and them building a following. Whether you post one a week or daily, or like me--almost hourly--people will come no matter your content if you give them a Reason to come.

No matter how unpopular the thing you are blogging about it's there is ALWAYS an audience. It's never a wasted effort to be creative and put your voice out there. Please, the fandom gets stale without new creators and ideas.

On that note, you are not stealing from another for making the same or similar content. That means you should gif that show that's already been gif'd dozens of times over. You should draw that comic of a popular headcanon/ship. You should write your story. As long as you are doing things in your own words/style and not outright copying word for word or sketch per sketch, you're fine. Two cakes are ALWAYS Better than one.

Being angry and spending your time hating/attacking/vague blogging about other creators only hurts you in the long run. jealously is a normal emotion, but when you let it take over your happiness you're only falling deeper into a pit that's already hard to get out of. (trust me)

Please, please, please do what makes you happy. Life should not be wasted on anger. You don't need popularity to be happy, sometimes it can be hella stressful. (take my word for it) Don't become the bully you wish you where in middle school. Spread kindness, support artist and creators. (this includes gif makers, image editors, amv makers, writers, OCs, etc)

the bizarre thing is that staff independently uses tumblr on their own blogs? so how do half of these changes even make sense to you all or improve the user experience? when you click on a post from mobile now it takes you to a separate page with just the post. what's the purpose of that? you can obviously clearly see the post on your dash why do i need to be taken to a separate page with just the post? isn't it more logical that you're clicking the post to be taken to the user's page? also do you know what happens when you click a post that the op deleted? you get stuck on a forever loading screen that does nothing but load no error message or anything just loading and there's no way to access the op's page. now i have to memorize a 33 character long url and go to search and type it up to go to op's page. i'm honestly just baffled how that makes sense and is improving user experience bc sorry for my naivety and utter ignorance but there seems to be 0 logic behind this change. good job on opening long posts in the dashboard instead of taking you to a separate page tho that's actually pretty neat o7

some of us who work at tumblr do use tumblr a ton, and we find bugs before you ever do, because we generally roll out changes to just us staff before everybody else. but of course, there are still things that fall through the cracks, and it sounds like you found a bug there with the deleted post issue. please file it to Support!

and in general, almost all of the changes we make are discussed internally and planned and whatnot, we know "why" we're doing things. i wish we were better at conveying that "why" in public, but even if we were, it still would not make complete sense to everyone. like i've been saying a lot lately: there are millions of people using tumblr. there is no "one way" to use it, so we're trying to do our best to make it the best for as many people possible.

I’ve only been on Tumblr I wanna say two or three months? I used to be a Twitter girlie so the format change really confused me but I honestly prefer Tumblr now.

My username is a word mixed in with my surname, not very creative

My phone lock screen is on a photo shuffle rn of my two dogs and cat! Used to be a studio ghibli photo shuffle.

I’ve got my ears pierced twice and one tattoo! I wanna get my helix pierced and I wanna get another tattooed to go with the semi colon butterfly I already have, maybe flowers? Or something weird like a kind of space background

I wear glasses! I spend more time cleaning them than actually looking through them

My friends used to wind me up and say I look like Meg from family guy but aside from that no😭

I’m not really sure what the best compliment I’ve had is; the only memorable one for me was (story time) I was a fic writer and a girl started tweeting about my fics and I saw it and replied and dm’d her, she was so sweet! We dated for a few months but it didn’t work out, we’re still friends now though and she gives the best music recs!

I’ll collect literally anything: books, funkos, notebooks, paint (I’m a pain hoarder), paintbrushes (I can never have enough).

greetings to those following along with the "do i change my url" journey. i've decided that i'm going to try out a new url, but keep starship-ranger-bug saved as a sideblog, and then if i don't like it, i can switch back and everything's fine!

now the question is which url. i've narrowed down the choices from the two polls i put up, down to only seven options. this was kind of based on which ones were popular, but mainly which ones i decided i liked the most after some reflection. so now i'm polling you on just these options! yay!

also, more for my benefit than any of yours, but i've evaluated the pros and cons of each url. because i need to.

sevenducksinatrenchcoat — pros: generic enough that if i do move onto other fandoms i could probably keep it, but it's still not boring, memorable enough. cons: it's long. and slightly clunky.

completely-incapacitated — pros: easily recognisable quote to those in the fandom. cons: it's made up of two words i struggle to spell.

the-relevant-trumpeter — pros: easy to remember, could also play around with the irrelevant trumpeter, would also work well for other usernames (ao3, youtube, etc). cons: idk there's something about it that i can't quite put my finger on.

salacious-filing-cabinet — pros: iconic and recognisable, gives the vibe of a weird tumblr url. cons: too used within the fandom (idk how to explain that better but i know what i mean), the word salacious brings up pornbot results.

bonnie-peggy-ramsey — pros: cute, about the same length as starship-ranger-bug. cons: even though in this context bonnie is being used as a descriptor not a name, it still feels like it's just three names in a row, which feels awkward to me.

easily-convinced-man — pros: banger song, banger mmni episode. cons: kinda boring.

imadethelemonade — pros: iconic quote, something nice about it's flow, rhymes. cons: once again there's just. something about it that's putting me off of it. and i don't know what it is.

and just for funsies

starship-ranger-bug — pros: been my url since i made this account, this also means i do have an emotional attachment to it, people know me as this, it's kinda become my brand, iconic /lh. cons: it feels weird to be predominantly a mischief blog while still having a starkid url, i feel like it'll cause people to follow me for starkid and then be confused about why there's not usually much starkid content.

I've followed you for so long now, since you were 16 iirc (I never remember my own age at past points) so that'd be eight years according to your bio. Not technically continuously since I changed accounts during that time and also was inactive sometimes, but y'know. You had the sunshinesel[redacted] url then I think, or maybe you switched to that URL soon after I followed. I vaguely recall your blog and icon being very orange, the icon might've been a pokemon? Not sure. Since, you've gone thru URL and icon changes (I think you recently changed the latter again, probably for spooky month) and changed pronouns and ofc dropped part of your name, yet you're one of the very few ppl who have (permanently) changed url & icon whom I'm still able to recognise successfully. The only other one I can currently think of has a very memorable name I love that they've never changed since I first followed them so while I don't instantly recognise them on my dash, as soon as I look at their bio I know who it is. I'm not even sure why I never lost track of who you are, I think you've just been consistently posting while I'm on (I'm also German so y'know, time zones) basically the entire time so you were kinda always there, not as like a major component (I don't think we were ever even mutuals but I defo sent some (anon, cuz I'm shy) asks back in the day) but just always there, a fixed point, ein Fels in der Brandung, so all together the changes were gradual to me. And that's nice, y'know? We're just all still here, despite everything. Five years ago today,

I was sixteen years old, and had accidentally deleted my entire tumblr account the day before. With me trying to start anew on here, I had joked a few days before with a mutual that I had been sharing so much Def Leppard stuff in the past week, that I should just make a Def Leppard side blog.

This mutual said "you'd have my full support", and that was kind of all I needed.

I was laying in bed five years ago tonight, talking with this mutual, and we were on this same topic again. I told her I was actually gonna make a Def Leppard side blog, and that's exactly what I did.

Part of me knew this seemingly dead fandom needed a renaissance, as I couldn't find any memes or new content or fanfic or whatnot. And even though I was only into them for about a week, I was full-blown obsessed, and needed a place to gush and gush to my heart's content.

When I was picking the URL for my new blog, I wanted it to be memorable and something I would want to keep forever- I wanted it to be something that sounded good in case it got popular. I was ambitious to gain attention because I wanted this new fandom to notice me so we could all go crazy over this band together. I knew I wanted to combine my two favorite DL songs- Hysteria and Photograph. One URL I considered was all-ive-got-is-hysteria, and I honestly can't remember any others?

In the end I thought the "I don't want your-" "Hysteria" was funny enough and sounded catchy, and thus my obsession had its own property.

And it was through this obsession that the rest of my life began. It was from here onwards that I got fully into the classic rock culture; I started a record collection, I started teaching myself guitar, I started collecting artifacts, I made SO MUCH fan art, my fashion sense changed, my ENTIRE music taste changed, I became a walking encyclopedia, I started making a dozen and a half amazing friends completely online, I started going to concerts, I started dabbling in concert photography, I started meeting celebrities. I really wouldn't be who I am today without Def Leppard and this stupid little side blog I made.

And I thank all one thousand and thirteen of you for wanting to obsess with 16 year old me over our beloved boys over the past 5 years!! Can you believe it's been that long??
