The Last One at the Wedding | Jason Rekulak | Published 2024

Frank Szatowski is shocked when his daughter, Maggie, calls him for the first time in three years. He was convinced that their estrangement would become permanent. He's even more surprised when she invites him to her upcoming wedding in New Hampshire. Frank is ecstatic, and determined to finally make things right.

It seems that Maggie failed to mention that she's marrying Aidan Gardner, the son of a famous tech billionaire. Feeling desperately out of place, Frank focuses on reconnecting with Maggie and getting to know her new family. But it's difficult: Aidan is withdrawn and evasive; Maggie doesn't seem to have time for him; and he finds that the locals are disturbingly hostile to the Gardners. Frank needs to know more about his family his daughter is marrying into, but if he pushes too hard, he could lose Maggie forever.

Frank Szatowski receives a phone call from his estranged daughter, Maggie, after three years of no contact. Excited at the prospect of reuniting with his daughter, he agrees to travel from Pennsylvania to Boston but is shocked to learn why. Maggie is engaged to a young man named Aidan, and she would like to introduce the two of them before the wedding in July.

Frank, a 26-year veteran with UPS, who is apart of the elite club called the Circle of Honor, where he had traveled for the last 25 years without an accident on the road while driving, drives into Boston and is shocked to learn that Aidan, a supposed struggling artist, lives in a penthouse suite in an affluent combined business and residential building.

Maggie explains that his name is Aidan Gardner, the son of wealthy business entreprenuer Errol Gardner, whom is also Maggie's boss at the company called Capaciti. Frank is happy to have reunited with his daughter, but is of the understanding that it appears that Aidan wants to be anywhere other than meeting him.

Despite this, Frank prepares for the wedding in vigor. Along for the ride is his older sister, Tammy, who after the death of Frank's wife decades before, helped raise Maggie in her absence. As a home health aide and a foster mother, Tammy is forced to bring along one of her charges, a 10-year-old girl named Abigail. Abby came from a broken home, and is dealing with head lice, and with permission from the state, Tammy has been granted special permission to bring Abby along for the wedding festivities.

They travel to New Hampshire, to the property owned by the Gardner family. With 300 guests expected, 100 of which would be staying on the property, Frank and Tammy are excited to get to the property to begin unwinding and preparing for the big day. While Frank is expecting to spend time with Maggie during the activities, he is less than thrilled to learn that she wishes to have no part in quality time together, and spends very little time with her dad and aunt.

Prior to them getting to the property, they were introduced to a man named Brody Taggert. The uncle of a young woman who had gone missing, Brody is adamant that the Gardner family, and Aidan in particular, were involved in the disappearance. Even more, Frank had received a photo of what appeared to be Aidan with the missing Dawn Taggert prior to his leaving. Intent on finding out the truth, Frank begins asking questions to those around him, which only fuels the Gardner's and their head of security, Hugo's, suspicions.

The wedding activities get underway, and the following morning, a young woman is found in the water surrounding the property. It appears that she had drowned, and drugs had been located in her luggage, but Frank thinks there is something more. He goes off to meet with the Taggert family, consisting of Dawn's uncle, whom he had met, and her mother.

It is told that she had been in a relationship with Aidan, and found out she had become unexpectedly pregnant. While her mother tried to tell her that she would have support in raising the baby or whatever she wished to do moving forward, Dawn was still adamant that she wanted help from the Gardner's as they were wealthy. However, while tracking her phone, her mother realized that the GPS tracker in Dawn's phone had gone down and she was later reported missing after her car had been found several miles away on a hiking trail head, along with various items of her clothing.

Frank is sure now that Aidan had something to do with Dawn's appearance and confronts Maggie about it, but Maggie explains that Aidan had been with her the entire weekend at her former basement apartment in Boston from that Friday into Sunday, and it was virtually impossible for him to have been involved.

Later that evening, Frank goes into the main house with the intent to meet Aidan's mother, Catherine, who hadn't been present for any of the festivities to that point. It was told to guests that she had been dealing with migraines as of late, but was hopeful to attend the ceremony the following morning. Once he is able to get inside her suite, the two of them meet.

Frank learns the sordid truth about Dawn Taggert: she hadn't been in a relationship with Aidan at all, but with Errol, her husband. He was known to have cheated on her multiple times, but what happened behind closed doors wasn't her business until it came knocking on her door. In her fit of rage, Catherine had hit her over the head with the very car battery her husband had invented, and in her disorientation, had fallen down the stairs. After her confession, Frank had been found by Hugo to have infiltrated Catherine's room and was reassured that Catherine was having a severe mental breakdown and wasn't aware of what she was saying, that her migraines had simply been a cover to deal with it and that she was very heavily sedated the majority of the time.

Frank is now intent on getting Maggie out of this situation, and goes in search for her. Remembering the name of the cabin she was staying in, he heads there and what he finds is something he never expected. Maggie isn't involved with Aidan at all, but is instead found to be having sexual relations with Errol, his father.

When Frank awakens the next morning, he is dealing with a concussion after having found Maggie in a compromising position with her boss and fiance's father, remembering the details. He explains to Tammy that the three of them need to go, with Maggie in tow. But Tammy explains that Maggie has always been this way, and that Frank has refused to see it.

We learn now what led to their estrangement three years ago. After graduation from college, where she had been involved in some sort of sting involving the sale of test answers to other students, Maggie moved to Boston to begin her life anew. She began wokring at a store called Dr. Cell Phone, where broken phones could be repaired. But, one night, Maggie returned home in the middle of the night, stayed for an idyllic family weekend before deciding to return to Boston the following day. She explains to Frank that she should anyone come looking for her or asking questions on whether or not she had been there that weekend, to say that Frank had simply woken up and found Maggie in her bed, asleep, with no idea of when she had arrived.

When someone does come asking questions, Frank lies and learns that Maggie may have been involved in an insurance scam on her former place of business, suspected of starting a fire to split the insurance proceeds with the man that had been her boss. Maggie is livid that Frank couldn't just lie for her, and states she never wants to see him again.

Now, Maggie explains that she and Errol had been involved in a relationship for about a year, and that the marriage to Aidan is a sham. They would remain married for a year, and after a divorce, she would be entitled to half of his assets and vice versa, given the prenup that they had signed, and she would continue her relationship with Errol as if nothing had happened and AIdan was free to be in a relationship with whomever he wanted.

But, as Frank decides to go along with the plan and walk Maggie down the aisle, he begins to search for Aidan, who has been missing for most of the weekend. He finds him a fallout shelter that had been built on the property before his family owned it, holding a gun. Frank assures him that he can help Aidan get away from this mess if they leave now, but they are confronted by Errol, the family lawyer Gerry and Hugo. Knowing he is backed into a corner, Aidan returns to the basement shelter and shoots and kills himself.

With the wedding now off, the Szatowski's return to Pennsylvania and their normal life. However, Frank is so upset by everything that happened and his own hand it, that he ends up crashing his UPS truck. After a brief investigation finds him at fault, he learns that he will continue to receive his full salary from his pension for the remaining three years he would have been working, but that he is now being forced to retire.

With nothing left to do, he finds himself caring for Abigail, who has been staying with Tammy after a failed return to her birth mother. The two of them strike up a friendship, and while staying with them at Tammy's condo, he sees something hanging on Abby's wall. She explains that Aidan had left it in her suitcase before they left Osprey Cove, and that it is the map of the property, Abby believing it to be a treasure map.

Frank understands now that Aidan meant to leave that for him, but as he and Abby had switched rooms early in their stay due to an infestation of spiders that made Abby hysterical, that Aidan had gotten their suitcases mixed up. He wants to give the map to Maggie, in the hope that it could be helpful if she ever wanted to get away from Errol and what has been done.

When he arrives at the penthouse where Maggie has remained after Aidan's death, he learns that he is having dinner with Errol and Gerry, with Hugo and Maggie present. When he presents them with the map, it is quickly burned and Errol explains now that something is going to happen to Abby, as she is a wild card and could eventually give up the knowledge on the map itself, as the red X is reportedly the whereabouts of Dawn Taggert's body.

Hoping to stall for time, Frank asks for five thousand shares of the Capaciti business, and after it is decided that it would happen within 72 hours but by the time he returns home, Abby will have been taken care of, he goes into the bathroom to warn his sister. Remembering his first trip to the penthouse, he lifts the lid of the toilet to find what had been hidden inside: a recorder with recorded tapes between Maggie and several members of the Gardner family and their associates.

He steals it, with the hopes of exiting the apartment. But is caught by Gerry's wife Sierra, after he had broken the toilet lid onto the floor, shattering the porclain. He is able to get away with the help of Lucia, the cook that had been hired for the evening, and the door he exits from sets off a fire alarm to the building.

Seven months later, Tammy has formally adopted Abby and while Frank wanted a hand in having custody of her, it isn't permitted in their state and he settles for being Uncle Frank, but to Abby, he is so much more. After the discoveries on the tape, Frank allegedly handed them over the authorities, and while he was hoping that all of them would go down, only Maggie and Hugo are dealing with the fallout.

Maggie is currently in prison, facing a 3-5 year sentence in a federal facility. Hugo had been deported back to the Republic of the Congo, where he fled, is supposedly the first person to be sentenced to death in the Congo since 2007. Frank attempts to visit Maggie in prison, but when he goes through the process, he learns that he isn't on her list of approved persons and after a guard goes to speak with her, she wants nothing to do with him.

Frank leaves, content that he had done the right thing and put a terrible person behind bars, despite it being his own flesh and blood.

I was born on March 20, 2002 in Higatangan Naval Biliran, the youngest of 2 siblings. I grew up in a loving family, surrounded by the beauty of Naval, Biliran. From a young age, I was always curious about the world around me. I loved to read, to learn, and to explore. I was fortunate to have many opportunities to travel and see new places, and I made the most of them. I was also passionate about playing music. Whether it was in our church, or our family boding, I always gave my all and strived to be the best that I could be. In my professional life, I was a young entreprenuer. I worked hard and dedicated myself to my craft, always seeking to improve and innovate. I am proud of the work that I did and the impact that I had on the world. I was also a loving spouse, parent, and friend. I cherished the relationships that I had with those closest to me, and I will always be grateful for the love and support that they gave me. I am leaving behind a legacy of helping others, especially my family. I hope that my life has inspired others to pursue their passions and to make a positive impact on the world. I will be remembered as a good loving son, brother friend too. I am grateful for the life that I have lived, and I am at peace knowing that I have lived it to the fullest. 1. Tell us about your journey in the industry so far?

I started my career as soon as I turned 18, my first stint began in 2013 at a fashion export house in Noida & I learnt a lot about the fashion business there. I joined the fashion export house for quick money because my family was going through a challenging time. During this time I also reflected a lot on my personality, my style & the way I presented myself. Though I was very passionate & intutive about fashion but the dream of becoming an anchor & facing the camera that I saw as a little girl was still on my list. I use to save a little share of money for a course in mass media & I joined ISOMES in 2016 & came one-step closer to my dream but I had to quit my job at the export house. I had to study & also be financially independent, so I applied at a BPO in gurgoan & got selected. I use to travel 3 states (Delhi, Noida & Gurgaon every day) I lived in delhi & studied in Noida & worked in Gurgaon, I use to catch up on my sleep in the cab during transit. But those days were so enriching & fulfilling for me. I in 2018 I came to know Times Network was looking for interns & I immediately applied & got selected, then I moved to Daily Hunt as an Anchor & later I was anchoring a sport show on News 24. So I was exposed to 3 types of businesses & I realised it very quickly that I will be an entrepreneuer one day.

2. What’s fashion for you?

Fashion for me is about comfort, whatever I am wearing I need to be comfortable in that. However I have observed there are many who will wear anything that is trending. Fashion is not about trends or fads, it is about comfort, expression & a way of life. So if you see a model wearing something that is suiting her & then you make the same purchase but then you end up looking very average. You need to understand your body type, your complexion things that your body will be comfortable in & then make a decision to define your personal style. 

3. What do u enjoy the most? Anchoring or life coaching?

Well, I believe anchoring is all about command, the anchor always drives the converstation & it is in their control. I like to express my thoughts, my principals & learnings with others. I am not a life coach but yes I am here to motivate the masses through my journey, my channel Nikology & it is my endeavour to inspire millions of girls like me who come from humble backgrounds but have the capabilities to touch the sky.

4. Any challenges that you face?

Yes, I have faced my share of challenges at the beginning of my career & I would like to put it out straight that life is all about turning your challenges into opportunities & learnings. You will face challenges at every walk of life, but what matters is how gracefully you face the challenges instead of giving up or running away from it. Positive affirmitions are very important, when I was facing a challenge I use to tell myself, this is a phase & it will pass and everything will be alright. Believing in yourself & having clarity is extremely critical, as a young girl coming from a muslim family I was not allowed to dream big. But everytime I was told not to I told myself I will not compromise & I will make it big one day. Life for women is never easy be it home makers or women who have careers, we are put under restrictions, laughed at when we drive, we face patriachy in our homes & sexism at workplaces. But it is important to understand we have these challenges because women themselves love to target eachother & bring eachother down. On the contrary women should support each other, contribute in each others growth both personal & business. And that is something i am working towards, I am in the process of building a community of learners, influencers & entreprenuers where a higher percentage of members will be females. Because I firmly believe one thing ‘The future is female.’

5. One advice to budding talents

I only have one advice no matter what you go through or how big the challenge is always have faith in one person and that is yourself.

6. Where do you see the fashion industry in coming years? In the coming years Fashion industry will enter a magical phase, I say this because in the recent 3-4 years people have become more aware about expressing themselves with their style, with the advent of eCommerce & FDI people have access to their favorite brands at the click of their fingers. In this era of fashion influencers people are exposed to different styles everyday, there is a new trend that is picking up in India recently ‘Thrifting’ with this concept everyone will be able to buy their favorite clothes, which will be really good for the environment & the big brands will finally reach the length & breath of Bharat.
