トレンディ歌謡に抱かれて　第４３回：Manna「blue in green」

【2枚目はどぉなるの!?シリーズ　第1弾】

 今年刊行された（何だかはるか昔のことのように感じちゃいますね）「オブスキュア・シティポップ・ディスクガイド」。ご承知の通り今まで全く顧みられなかったレア・アーティスト達の素晴らしい作品が数多く掲載されているわけですが、そのバイオグラフィとなるとネットの海にも転がっていない場合がとても多い。故に掲載された盤だけが「あ。これが唯一の聴ける盤なんだな。これを押さえておけばとりあえずこのアーティストはOKなんだな」…などと思われがちな気がします（ファースト・アルバムが掲載されている場合は特にそうでしょう）。果たしてそれは、本当にそうなんでしょうか。それが本当にそうなのか、当ブログでは速やかに検証。各アーティストの「ディスクガイド未掲載の”2枚目”」をフィーチャーし、（クレジットを含め）どんな音楽性の変化や進化があったのか、そして端的に「良い盤」なのかをレビューしてみたいと思います。

 まずは拙著のアーティストから取り上げるのがスジだろう、というわけでMANNA（P71に掲載）です。小編成でコンパクトにアレンジされたクレプスキュール直系の「宅録リゾートポップス」は、PZV「カップルズ」の後日譚にも聴こえる素晴らしい作品でした。さて2枚目はどうでしょう。まず驚くべきはこの豪華な参加陣！生ストリングス・生ホーンで純正ソフトロックのモードが加味され、「デスクトップ」から実体へと進化したような趣きがあります。と言いつつある種の「大仰さ」はうまく回避。前作同様のキュートさは維持されているのが素晴らしい。

  １．青い魚

ミレニウム、ハーパース・ビザールのような端正なストリングス・イントロに始まり、合間に鳥チュンチュンも入るソフト・ロック。しかしエコー感の上手な調整から、聴いた感触はあくまでアーリー90s印。

２．太陽海岸

（作詞 梶原とも子　作曲 鴨宮諒　編曲 Manna）

生ホーンでハイラマズ経由の中期BB5を透視したかのような、時代先取りの最高サウダージ曲。ボーカル・歌詞・音飾、すべて日差しで溶けたように柔い…これは相当部分がミックスの賜物でしょう。

３．自転車と夏と

（作詞 梶原とも子　作曲 鴨宮諒　編曲 Manna）

PZV「サマータイム・サマータイム」をより無出来事化したようなアレンジの初夏ミディアム。前作に一番近い楽曲かな？いろんなパーカッション類がチャカポコ鳴っていますが、ここでも引き続き主張しすぎない。

４．甘い考え

（作詞 梶原とも子　作曲 鴨宮諒　編曲 Manna）

打ち込みでないのに密室デジタル感触の強い、アンニュイ・チャチャ。セニョール・ココナッツやパシフィック231を先取りしたようなエキゾな感覚が最高です。しかしそこまでコンセプチュアルでなく自然体なのも美点。

５．in green (instrumental)

密林系の鳥チュンと、やけに前面にミックスされたカラカラした音のパーカッションが異郷へと誘う、ちょっと新機軸の眩暈系ミディアムです。キーボードの音色が透き通るようなトレンディ・クリア音で良い。

６．すいれんの花

（作詞 梶原とも子　作曲 鴨宮諒　編曲 Manna）

ちょっと昨今のJ-POP的（薬師丸ひろ子「赤い花、青い花」も想起）なオリエンタル色があって面白いポップな楽曲。ここまででいちばん生ストリングスが生かされた楽曲ではないでしょうか。

７．一番好きなもの

こちらはジャポネスクなマイケル・フランクスという感じ？メロディはけっこう歌謡曲的。ストリングスもクラウス・オガーマン顔負けな黄昏ムードで鳴っております。

インスト2曲目で、スパイ映画のビブラフォン・ムードみたいな曲。前作だったら完全打ち込みでやっていたであろうところを、アンサンブル感触3割増しでややゴージャスに展開。

９．happening

今までのリラキシンムードから一転、打ち込みビートと性急なカッティングのアップテンポなポップス楽曲が来ました。サビも覚えやすく高まる仕様で意外な試みだなーと思ったらコレ、シングル楽曲だったんですね。

１０．イヤイヤ

で次は実験的楽曲です。笑　ブンチャカしたアコーディオンやバンジョーが賑やかに鳴り、さらにスライを思い出すリズム・パターンが「アップテンポ」を強調。目まぐるしくもやはり「エッジー」には響かせない。

１１．青空の向こうへ

おやすみ前の感触が強いバラード。レンジ広めに鳴るスチールギターがまるでシンセのようなのですが、歌詞に「宇宙」と出ることもあって何だかスペイシーに響きます。この感触は唯一無二。

以上11曲ですが、これはファーストと並んで名盤でしょう。生音中心のアプローチは前作からの「進化」そのものですし、かつそのコンパクトな魅力をまったく損なっていないのがほんとうに奇跡的で、素晴らしい。単純に「PZV=小西」と言えないのはもうおわかりでしょう。初期のアンニュイさというか「曖昧な美徳」のようなものを、鴨宮氏は確実に担っていたとわかります。

本で書かなかったのが急に惜しくなってきました。1行でもこの作品にも触れておけばよかった…というわけで見つけたら絶対に買ってくださいね。

Headcanon #2

Youichi is very smart and quiet for a young child, and since he can call upon ghosts much like Nico, he starts clinging to him like a big brother, even calling him ‘nee-chan’. Nico, however, has to share him with Natsume and the rest of the gang (though, if they ever went out to do something, Nico ends up carrying Youichi which has brought about the nickname the ‘Ghost Brothers’). (I can just imagine Nico lighting up whenever Youichi is near him.) He does work well alongside Natsume and the others, though he seems to like haunted houses the most as he gets to enjoy Yuu’s scary side and he helps by shadow-traveling to scare people (though he’s been scared by a few of Yuu’s creations in turn, but it’s made up when he gets to watch the reactions of others). Hotaru keeps a rather close eye on him since he made Mikan cry once, quite by accident (Hotaru doesn’t care, she’s the only one who can make Mikan cry). Nico is far more powerful than Persona, which has earned him the respect, and caution, of his elder. Often times, this means that Persona will allow Nico to take Natsume from any of his missions and/or do them. Persona’s true feelings for the Ghost King are unknown, but Nico isn’t exactly the fondest of him, especially when it concerns the younger children. Natsume might have been able to keep Persona away from his friends, but Nico keeps him away from everybody since Nico’s bad side is the one place no one wants to be. 

Edit: I forgot Tsubasa! The two of them are fighting constantly simply because Tsubasa’s mischievous side enjoys controlling Nico with his shadow, reminding Nico that he doesn’t have that kind of power, though Nico’s shadow-travel makes Tsubasa kinda jealous (which is probably the real reason why Tsubasa uses his shadow powers on Nico a lot). But, when they are forced to fight on the same team, they are a force to reckon with. Between them, it seems the shadows take on a life of their own, and a lot of possibilities are opened up.
